I really wanted to like this place. Good location and my server was nice and attentive. Restrooms were clean and I had no problem getting seated. I ordered the Sashimi Deluxe. The portions were generous, but the fish was flavorless. I dipped the sashimi in a mixture of wasabi and soy sauce, but it still tasted bland. I thought eating it with rice would help, but it didn't. I finished my meal simply because I was hungry. I didn't bother complaining because what were they going to do? The preparation was fine, but it was the quality of the fish that was the problem. The servers were polite enough (which was better than last time) but forgot to put in our appetizers. We asked about them and ended up just cancelling them altogether after our meals were out. I've been coming to Umi Sushi for many years. In high school my sisters and I used to come in so often they used to have our order memorized. I moved to Dixon so I order takeout more than eating in usually. Yesterday my fiancé and I got 2 sushi boy rolls, a super California roll, and 2 salmon rolls. My fiancé always orders there karoke appetizer, and I got the edamame. They offer a spicy garlic or regular edamame. I got the regular but the spicy garlic is really good too. I always get a sushi boy and salmon roll whenever I go and sometimes we pick out another roll or too. The other day we tried the shrimp lover roll for the first time is it was soooo good, along with 2 Oregon rolls, and 2 sushi boy rolls. Updated review. Had a taste for gyoza and stopped here to get my fill lol. Today however the lady working the counter was a bit rude. Not sure if she was having a bad day. When placing the order I requested chili sauce and she said it was $.50. I requested she just add some to the plate before bagging it up. She did but wasn't very pleasant about it. I've been coming to this restaurant for about 4 years, I always get the bento box. I'm allergic to avocadoi always ask can I have cucumber instead? This is the only restaurant I have a problem with, the waitress always complaint about me changing avocado to cucumber This young lady is waitress she's always saying oh the workers won't be able to do it but since the manager is here he will go ahead and do it , and then she also said they don't like the menu to be altered what's altering from putting cucumber instead of avocado in the sushi bento box?I don't see what the problem is if I tip and I come there. Writing an honest review in hopes that something (anything) will improve. Or maybe this place will just close. TLDR: my husband and I both got sick after dinner. Not sure how this place is a functioning business. 0.05 stars/ 5 because I just feel bad for all involved. Details: Service 1.5/10 - our server gets a couple points because he was decent and checked on us frequently, but when I mentioned it was our first time to the restaurant and inquired about any good dishes, he chuckled before saying "umm... I don't know. The sushi girl and sushi boy rolls are popular". (This was red flag #1, I wish I could say we got up and left here). He couldn't have cared less, but honestly I don't blame him because I wouldn't want to be the face of this place either. Two other young ladies didn't acknowledge our existence when dropping off dishes and one came back to confirm that we had ordered what she brought over with a monotone voice and expressionless face. Food 1/10 - one point for fresh edamame, but it was then doused in sweet chili oil. The fried gyoza must've been frozen first and extra deep fried before being served. I can only compare them to bottom of the basket fast food chicken nuggets in gyoza form - too much overcooked oil and sure to ruin your insides. We then regretfully ordered the crunchy roll and sushi girl roll. My husband's last bite of the crunchy roll included a hidden shrimp tail that he had to inconspicuously spit out at the table (he threw up the rest 5 minutes after leaving the restaurant in a parking lot across town... apologies to anyone who witnessed this). Ginger & Wasabi 0/10 - this deserves its own section because I've never seen something like this in my life. Every table had a set of two jars that would typically contain a chili oil or soy sauce at other restaurants, but this establishment filled them with stale, fake, pink dyed ginger and old wasabi. Not only does this come across as lazy service, it's simply gross. Do with this information what you will. I don't enjoy writing negative reviews, but this needed to be shared. read more

I've had a Japanese Chicken Katsu a lot of times. There's also a lot of Hawaiian Barbecues out there that make different versions of this. It's not the best source of protein and I might not want it everyday, but it is what it is. It's like a West Texas Country-Fried Steak, an Austrian Schnitzel, or an Italian Milanesa. What separates it from the rest is the Panko Bread Crumbs that make it different. It wasn't greasy at all. Others offer Curry Sauce, but I usually don't get that. The Katsu Sauce is good, it have a zing to it. I also got Pink Lemonade and it seem like it doesn't look like Pink Lemonade, but that's OK. Maybe it's better that way. read more

Umi Sushi is great for a quick bite of sushi after a movie but don't expect great sushi. The restaurant is nestled in the back of a small plaza with the Brendan Theater. The restaurant looks like an old diner with super small booths, an assortment of tables, and two bars with stools (only one in use while the other is used for storage). My group ordered the Chirashi Don, Unagi Don, Hamachi Kama, and an assortment of nigiri. The unagi was good and seemed fresh. There was no odor. They have Ama Ebi (my fav) and it is served with the fried heads. Both Dons were a good size for the price and the rice was fresh and hot. The portions of fish in the Chirashi Don were great and they give you a huge helping of seaweed. The Unagi Don had the right amount of eel, sauce, and rice. They serve it with pickle radish, pickled cucumbers, and helping of seaweed. I was not a fan of the Hamachi Kama. It was a bit under cooked and was served with a very light watered down tempura sauce. I also found the miso did not have a great deal of flavor. I just ate the seaweed and tofu bits and left the broth. The edamame was heated up in a plastic pitcher with hot water and then served to us. That was done in plain view of the customers. It came out slightly warm and bland. The service was fast and prompt. It is very noisy in the restaurant from all of the screaming kids. I probably went on a night when all the kids in the restaurant wanted to scream and cry. :( Umi is just OK and I will probably go elsewhere in the future when I want sushi. read more

Tried this restaurant for the first time. My husband and I walked in at 814pm and the servers in the back didn't look thrilled to serve us. I asked if they were still but the girl that sat us ignored my question twice. A different person actually served our booth, and she was a bit nicer. We only wanted 3 sushi rolls after our movie, but didn't realize that would feel like such an inconvenience. If you don't want to serve people past 8, consider closing early, but if your door reads 9pm, you should put a smile on your face or go home. That was our date night.
