Umpas is a great breakfast place. Always has been. A typical neighborhood, home cooking, Mom & Pop diner in every sense of that word. We met our contractor there to review some details, and I ordered the hamburger not expecting much. I was 100% surprised. It is large. On a real fresh bun that does not squish into a nothing ball of dough. They cook to order so rare or medium rare is an option unlike almost everywhere outside of home who only serves well-done. It was obvious the meat was fresh not frozen. No fancy decor, but neighborhood homey and pleasant right down to the home-made curtains. The focus is good food. The burger was delicious, and I took half of it home completely satisfied. This is now my go to burger place. Priced for the workingman. read more

Merritt Island is blessed to have several outstanding breakfast restaurants - this is definetly not one of them. The interior is shabby, severely dated, and not very clean. The service was laughably unfriendly. The "waiter" was wearing his pajamas and clearly did not want to be there. When he bothered to speak he mumbled so low we thought we were being pranked. It must be a family member because not business would otherwise send this fellow out to meet the public. As a side bar - the food was below average. My wife and I were driving down the road on our way to another restaurant and we saw all the cars in the parking lot for this one. Thinking if it was that popular it had to be good, we decided to give this one a try. SO glad we did! Great service and great food in a Mom and Pop diner. My wife had the best tuna melt that she's had in years , she said. My ham cheese and egg breakfast sandwich with simple but delicious! Friendly little hole in the wall with great breakfast. Driving by, we noticed this place had a good amount of cars outside daily, so we figured the locals knew it was good. We arrived Black Friday for breakfast around 9am. The place was booming. We grabbed a table immediately and the coffee was flowing. The server and service was fantastic. Umpa's Diner- Merritt Island, FL- 2 Stars Reading the name on my random name generator, I metaphorically wiped my brow. After a run of Italian joints, I was in need of a good ole fashioned American diner, and just my luck, Umpa's Diner in Merritt Island popped up. The drive up was a given spectacular journey as you just can't beat the scenic drive up the island especially when you get to the zero lot line commercial district with zero growth planning. After being seated I was introduced to my waitress, the owner, Michelle. Michelle is extremely pleasant and informed me she had been here for 10 years. That deserves a shout-out as the restaurant business is a fickle wench and surviving 10 years (including a pandemic) should be congratulated, regardless of the slop they are slingin'. Thankfully, I got my order of a Tuna melt with fries and two eggs, corned beef hash, home fries, biscuit and a griddle cake, before Michelle was called away to attend to other duties and was replaced by an inattentive, Bogdanoff looking emo named Christina. I wish Michelle had been able to remain my wait staff, but alas, that is not how the cookie crumbled in this case. After snapping a few requisite snapshots of my fodder, grabbed the tuna melt and commenced to the job in hand. The toast was grilled in margarine, so I have to give some points for that, however, the tuna itself was bland, unseasoned and did not taste exceedingly fresh. It wasn't bad, mind you, it just didn't have the fresh made-to-order taste. The fries were of your average frozen variety. Moving on to the order of breakfast staples, I found neither the potatoes nor the corned beef hash exuding much in the seasoning department (reminiscent of the Tuna Melt). I understand not wanting to overly salt and pepper your goods before shipping them out, but all three foodstuffs mentioned should have some flavoring. The eggs were average, however, the big conundrum here was the biscuit. It tasted okay but clearly frozen. Michelle might be getting frozen biscuits and other foodstuffs from Sysco, but I can at least attest to the fact that the biscuits are on the higher end. The Johnnycake was thin and flavorless, nothing to write home about. Umpa's Diner is like hundreds of greasy spoons across this great land of ours that appeal to the lowest common denominator. This place will certainly never win any James Beard Awards (or any other culinary award for that matter), but if you just scraped up $2.00 from your couch cushions or a passing stranger, this would be a King's breakfast. There's new owners and they're awful. Really bad. You can tell they swapped out food for cheaper options for some stuff and it's gross. Also the new owner is rude. I'm sure the original owners wanted to retire or something; however, my husband and I will not be returning. Over it. Staff and management were very kind and helpful. Unfortunately when I read their website it said they had a fantastic breakfast buffet, and the reason I went there in the first place. I ordered the eggs Benedict and they were fine. Unfortunately the hash browns tasted like they were in the refrigerator for a long time and picked up the odors of other food, that I get did not care for at all. Brevard County runs a very tight ship with restaurant standards and Umpa's without being at all fancy always gets top grades from the inspectors. This is a very basic diner with good simple food and especially good breakfast items. It's reasonably priced, easy parking and friendly service. It would be easy to overlook because it's kind of set back from the road. I just wish they were open about one more hour later so I could stop for lunch more often. I would give it 4 stars because the ambiance is non existent unless you are totally into military tribute. read more

So I stopped in here after reading the reviews and from what the former owners son had told me about the place. I will admit that I got here kinda late. They close at 1:30pm and I got here about noon. I was greeted warmly by the owner, very nice Indian man and his staff. A 40 something very attractive female. Those were the only good things and the reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 The buffet was runny scrambled eggs, burnt bacon, bland sausage gravy, canned biscuits, some fruit, sausage links(also a little burnt and tasted like they'd been there all morning), and some store bought frozen French toast sticks. This is a great diner. I've passed it over the years and kept saying I needed to stop. So sad I waited this long! It has a super friendly atmosphere and all the patrons seem to know each other. The owner (I'm assuming), could read every customer's minds and gave me water before I asked and my friend Splenda before he asked (it was actually impressive). We ate on a Thursday morning and it was a "seat yourself" situation - It seemed the locals liked to walk in and have a seat - it added to the "local" feel. We found a seat and read the Specials Board and coffee was on its way in minutes. They told us about the breakfast buffet for about $8. I checked it out for this review and it was clean, well maintained, had fresh items, and smelled yummy (however, being a vegetarian I ordered off the menu). My 60th Birthday year continues on with another "first time" restaurant! We enjoyed brunch this morning at Umpa's with French toast, spinach omelette, bacon, sausage and eggs over easy, pancakes and a western omelette! Sooo much food and very inexpensive! The quality and taste was very good, thanks to Mary the cook! Coffee cups were kept full with smiles from great waitresses. The owner stopped at the table to check on us as well! If you are hungry in the morning, this is the place to be. I had their wonderful buffet breakfast. The spread was as follows...... Fruit, pudding, bacon (yum), link sausage, cheesy hash browns, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, two types of scrambled eggs, and grits. Service was outstanding. We went for breakfast, but the lunch menu was too enticing. I got the patty melt and onion rings. Food was hot, tea was sweet and service was spot on. The only issue was that the food was kinda bland, good, but bland. I would recommend it to friends due to its friendly atmosphere and cozy diner setting, but maybe try something else. I posted the wrong rating earlier. I still have a problem with added fee using credit card and for this reason I do not plan on returning. The service was superior and the food is very good. This review will be short and sweet, I stopped by here to meet some family before leaving Florida for the Bahamas. Umpa's Diner is a staple in Cocoa Beach. Price, Food and staff all deserve 5 stars. It is a bit of run down place but those are the best kinds of spots! If you are looking for a quick bite, affordability and taste factor, this is breakfast stop in the area! Food is good and I love supporting small business. That said, I do not plan on returning. I have been there many times and never closely looked at my bill, this time I noticed the charge to my credit card added. The charge was only 70 cents on a 20 dollar bill. I tipped the waitress $10.00 cash and asked to see the owner. He told me the charge was the amount the credit card company charges me to use the card, apparently he does not understand this is the charge to him. If the fee was posted anywhere in the restaurant I would not have complained, but this is theft. I know it is a small amount but I was not informed of added fee. read more
