This has to be the best sushi/ sashimi I have had since moving to the Northeast. Very fresh and a good variety including some very unusual items. I would like to see more raw rolls on the menu, but I think that's the "fusion". Offering options for people who don't like raw fish. I think I even saw a roll topped with beef. Had a great lunch. Each dish was better than the previous. Started with a sliced tuna amuse-bouche in a ginger sauce. Vegetable tempura was lightly battered and piping hot! Another restaurant that I ordered Grubhub from. The tako yaki (is it one word or two?) I had was insanely good; warm, doughy and practically melted in my mouth. Could have done without the mayonnaise on top, though it wasn't overkill. Spicy tuna roll had a nice kick to it, salmon roll was a standard salmon roll. My good friend, who is the head of the unit, is Japanese and the food was outstanding as was the service! Sushi finally came to Troy!! I've been here a few times and it's one of those places where you pay for quality over quantity. I'm not going to lie, the restaurant doesn't look like it belongs on the street it's on. It looks and feels like it belongs on 2nd St moreso than on 4th. It's a bit more upscale and definitely not one of those fusion Chinese/Japanese restaurants that you see so much of here in this area. There's a beautiful sushi bar that you can sit at, as well as about 8-10 tables or so, and also two areas up in front where you can sit in a tradition Japanese manner - aka on the floor, but it is very cozy and fairly romantic as long as you don't have people outside the window yelling and screaming as they are apt to do across the street. This is legitimately the best and freshest fish that I've ever had in New York - including New York City. Whenever I come, I always get the Sushi Sashimi Dinner for two and boy is it worth it! They present the fish in a beautiful and super creative way - like creating flowers with the fish, or scoring the fish so that it can be rolled up nicely. It's always been high quality and super tasty. The yellowtail belly was probably the best thing I ate all year, and when we sat down at the bar once, the chef might've plopped some toro on our plates for us to try - on the house. What a treat! The one thing to keep in mind is that their Alcohol license expired so you can't booze and have phenomenal sushi at the same time here, unless you BYOB, which they do allow. However, when they did have their liquor license, they had a great selection of sake, both hot and cold, which I really enjoyed as well. I've been there for the lunch special as well, and I will have to say that if you're expecting a large portion bento box like they do at some of the other restaurants (like Mr. Fuji or Sushi Tei, etc.) you won't be getting that here. However, the quality makes up for it tenfold. Definitely recommend! Today the owner wouldn't let me use an expired Groupon FOR THE CASH VALUE, as it is supposed to be able to be utilized. That means there would have been no discount, only money I already paid to Unagi. In addition he was rude about it. Portions were significantly smaller than usual and higher price the same as always. There was nothing that really separated it from anything else though. The service was decent but the price was a bit much for what I got. Normally when I get "sushi" I actually order sashimi or appetizers that are mostly raw fish, so quality of fish matters to me, and there's only a couple of places around that I can consistently rely on to get safe, fresh, good, raw fish when I want it. This place blows my established favorites out of the water. Quality and selection of fish is not even a question here. From there, they make solid fundamentals you expect from a sushi place, but also have more to offer in regards to selection of fish, and variety of experimental dishes you won't see anywhere else around the capital region in this genre of food. 0. Despite everything in my reviews and the pictures included, the price is competitve and on par with other sushi places in the area. 1. The selection of fish for sashimi is extensive compared to most places including scallop, striped bass, octupus, and a host of other fish that are hard to find anywhere else in the region, in addition to the usuals. SASHIMI/APPS 2. The appetizers were really good, without being over the top, and don't use visuals to justify skimping on the food, even though the presentation is best in the area for a sushi place. When I saw the menu, I set aside my usual sashimi go to order to try some new sashimi inspired dishes I had never seen anywhere before. I had seared albacore tuna with onion chutney and garlic chips, and salmon tartar in a honey wasabi sauce with raw quail egg. ***** VIBE/GROUPS 3. While most places have a few shared options, this place has an entire page dedicated to it, for reasonable prices given the food, definitely making it a good place to come with a large group of people. A few people were there alone eating at the sushi bar, but many people were in groups which the restaurant was very accomodating for. Alot of people were doing taking out too, which makes it a good local go to. They also have a ten dish chef's choice menu for $80pp if you are looking to really go indulge in something creative and high quality, while everyday sushi orders and walkins are affordable and welcome. 4. What a great find in Troy. Moving here from Santa Monica I thought finding a solid Sushi place would be a challenge. Lucky me. Really fresh fish. The salmon especially is superb as was the yellowtail. The Spider roll was terrific as well. Fresh grated wasabi is really appreciated. I have been to Unagi several times now and they don't cease to impress. The service is stellar, you feel like you are their friend. Andy is super nice and he is a great sushi chef. The fish is good quality and fresh and the presentation is really nice. Their soy sauce is imported from Japan and tastes different than your average soy sauce and they also use real wasabi which makes a difference. They even offer uni and toro, things that you can't get at most sushi places in the area. It is a little bit more pricey than other spots but you get what you pay for. First of all, the atmosphere in this place is so warm and welcoming. I ordered take out and waited on one of the couches and got to take in the sights sounds and smells of the place while I waited. The staff were all so friendly, and kept checking in on me even though I hadn't been waiting that long. When my order came, it came with a smile and (it was NYE) a wish to have a happy New year. Ive been here once before this, the sushi was yummy but the service was lacking. Tonight called at 6 and asked if they had room for 2 around 7. My husband and i arrived at a few min after 7 to a sign that said they were closed, we walked in and they proceeded to tell us we had a limited time to eat as they had a reservation for 8 people at 830, not even thw whole restaurant. One thing that I have to highlight is their consideration of my daughters peanut/nut allergy - they were outstanding in making sure that they understood her allergies, checked the oils, and recommended safe options for her (no sushi because they have nuts at the sushi bar), she went with the ramen bowl which was delicious and a generous portion.
