I first went to Uncle Joe's over 30 years ago. I remember wondering why my grandfather would be taking me to a little shack on San Gabriel Blvd next to an auto shop so early in the morning on a Saturday for donuts, when there was a Winchell's just down the street from us. But then I tasted it...a glazed buttermilk ball. I was in love. The years have passed, and the location has changed, but that glazed buttermilk ball still exists. I don't eat donuts that often, but I did tonight. I had one for dinner, with a tall glass of cold milk. Yeah, it's strange, but it's awesome at the same time. My other faves include their glazed cinnamon roll, apple fritters and chocolate/chocolate cake donuts. I've been to other donut places , but they don't measure up. Yes, I've been to Donut Man in Glendora, and I love their strawberry or peach donuts, but i don't really think of those as donuts. I haven't tried any of their sandwiches, or fancy coffee drinks. I like to keep it simple...the coffee is good, fresh and hot, and the milk is cold. Stick to the basics and you won't go wrong. read more

Two experiences there. Each one was after a drunk binge at indian restaurant. The first one occured ar approximately 2 am in the morning. The best donut i have ever had in my entire life. it was a typical round donut with the hole in the middle with white icing and colored sprinkles on top. Who knew that this little object could contain such amazing taste. The insides was warm, fluffy, soft and not too dense. the outside was sweet and actually somewhat crispy! the next time i went it was around 12 30 am. i guess they still hadn't brought out the new donuts yet because i ordered the same donut and it just tasted like a typical donut. major dissapointment. overall. I will go there again at 2 am in the morning. otherwise, any other donut shop will do for your donut cravings. read more

If you live in San Gabriel, this is as close as it gets to city Landmark! When I was young, I would normally walk to the arcade on Valley Blvd where it is now a bakery/foot massage parlor. Every time we would pass by Uncle Joes Donuts (It use to be located on the corner of San Gabrielino baseball field on San Gabriel Blvd and Grand Ave. Donuts on the way home after a good outing on the arcades was a tradition with me and my brothers. My father would give us our lunches from Uncle Joe's Donuts in elementary school. My friends would be quite jealous... not everday you get to eat a chocolate donut for LUNCH. They have since relocated closer to Broadway Ave. BUT the donuts remain the same and they now added sandwiches and home-made ice-cream. Donuts are always fresh, coffee isn't the best, but its AFFORDABLE, and they OPEN LATE. Great for late night sugar cravings and close enough where I live that its within driving distance! we had two kinds of donuts. i had a chocolate topped one and wilson had a cinnamon sugar one. both were very yummy even though wilson wished his cinnamon one would have more cinnamon. the only reason we gave them four stars instead of five is cause we only tried two, oh and cause they teased us with all the winning scratchers by the register. we saw them and decided to get one ourselves and well... we didnt win like everyone else. haha. will we go again, yes we will. i think we would give it another go and try more donuts. they were very fresh, soft and reasonable price. read more

Like some other reviewers I have been coming here off and on for a good while. Since it was further down the street as a stand alone shop. Blue and white, if I recall. I've tried a few donuts here, and sometimes they are a bit original compared to your typical donut. Most donuts taste the same when it comes down to it, so a bit of a change up is ok by me. The real reason I go to this shop when I go is for a sort of crisp they have. Think of a large deep fried tortilla with apple, blueberry, or raspberry filling. Or it could be cherry, who knows?! Point is they deep fry the entire shebang until golden brown with crisp ends and top it off with either crumb topping with glaze or an extra thick coat of glaze, no crumb. But I have got to tell you, talk about a guilty pleasure!! Sometimes I have gone and intend to get something else. Never works out if they have those things. Sometimes I go and they have run out, or simply haven't any when I go. So I walk out, disappointed. It's just that good! read more

Things Ain't What They Used to Be That being said, Uncle Joe's still spoils me compared to other donut shops. I grew up in San Gabriel in the 50's and first visited Uncle Joe's in their former location in the late 60's. I think the other spot may have originally been a Tasty-Freeze, but it was south a few blocks on San Gabriel Blvd., and taken over by the adjoining school. The glazed buttermilk balls are the best and most unique. Not heavy and greasy like you'd imagine. Exporting them could alter our trade deficit. There used to be a cream-filled, coconut flaked triangle, don't know if that's still being made. Good maple bars, too. I now live in Seattle WA., but make a pilgrimage to Uncle Joe's when in town. The current place now is no prize to look at, but just get some glazed buttermilk balls, go home and make some stovetop espresso, and have yourself a gourmet meal! read more

I been going to uncle joe's since I was a child. It's very community orientated. Many of there customers have been going there for years. They always been nothing but friendly. The owner of the place always there to greet you. Along with this kids and wife. As for the donuts always fresh and yummy. You get donuts or milkshakes or ice cream. read more

Did they sell or something, haven't been in a while and now they are terrible. I give two stars instead of one because they used to be good. But the apple fritter has been changed to have raisin and its greasy and there other donuts were greasy. They were out of custard so could not try but I'm not sure I want to go back to try. read more

Okay, I LOVE donuts. I'll often to go Krispy Kreme all the way out in Rowland Heights (read: out of my way) because 1. they're good stuff and 2. they're open late. I just didn't feel like going out that way and wanted to stay close to home so I yelped some places that have good ratings and are still open at 11 pm. Called this place to find that they are open until 1 or 1:30 am. Once I got there, I saw so many drool-worthy donuts and I really wanted them all. I ended up with three instead (one for my boyfriend...and the two..well, hehehehe). They were really big portions and I have finally found a new place to get my late-night craving fix without having to drive to Krispy Kreme! read more

I have been at this small donut shop for over 10 years and it never fails to satisfy me. Their donuts here are always fresh. My favorite is always the original glazed donut but their jelly donuts are really good too. Their sandwiches here are very reasonably priced and fressly made while you wait. Uncle Joes is a quaint family owned donut house that's open late into the evening. Their donuts are always pretty good and the service, is always warm and friendly. Definite must try : the buttermilk bar ~ Always very soft and glazey. The apple fritter is also very good~ Very thick and sweet ! To be quite honest, their donut selection is sometimes sparse late into the night, so make sure if you do want a donut to hit this place up early, otherwise you might be disappointed by the small selection. I forget the guys name, but the guy that usually helps me out is always very friendly and will throw in a donut or two for free. Overall this place is a 3.5 with the service really holding it up there along with the donuts that are great when they are available. read more

My relative is a big donut aficionado so when we were around the area I told him to try this place. It's not exactly easy to spot so be sure to get the directions down or you need to do a U-y. It was a hole in the wall but there were LOTS of people on a saturday morning (where I personally believe people would be grumpy if they're not snuggled up in bed on a cold rainy LA morning) so I knew something was up. We tried the glazed, plain regular and then a buttermilk. The glazed and plain was nothing to write home about but the buttermilk was VERY good. It was 5 stars really but the location and the overall "would I go there for one thing" makes it set a star back. So is this place good enough to come back? Only if we're craving buttermilk donuts. IF you live in the area like we do, you can visit if you want, but otherwise if you need to drive a distance anyways I would try portos. It's not exactly the same fare but the breads and pastries imo are out of the world. Now the stuff there DEFINITELY worth a drive to. read more
