I am quite surprised at the mediocre reviews and rating I see for Uncle Julio's, I had a great time on Friday, 11/15/19 with a friend! My steak quesadilla was flavorful and tender, without any of the fat or gristle you often get with a skirt steak item, and I loved the chips and salsa (the heat sneaks up on you so be warned if you're an extreme lightweight like myself). Our server--Hayley, I believe--was fantastic, bringing my dining companion copious amounts of Diet Coke as he needed them and keeping us well-stocked with the aforementioned chips and salsa as well. Her recommendation of the honey chipotle chicken was also appreciated at the table. The only reason I can't go five stars here was the less than welcoming host staff. Between the three of them at the stand, no one could offer up a friendly smile and also spoke very quietly for such a loud establishment. I announced that I had a reservation and was handed a pager with a mumbled statement that I couldn't decipher and she didn't seem interested in repeating. Thankfully we were seated within a couple minutes of the reservation time, but instead of starting the experience on a high note, Uncle Julio's had to work a bit harder to overcome this first impression. read more

After hearing about the chocolate pinata, Uncle Julio's was on the list of places to visit asap. I read some reviews prior to going so I knew not to visit anywhere near dinner time because it would likely be packed so we made a reservation (yes, chocolate pinatas deserve that kind of priority!) for a Saturday afternoon and found the experience to be quite perfect. We sat in the sunroom to enjoy the warm, sunny day. Because we went solely for the chocolate pinata (and had just come from a luncheon), I can't speak to the appetizers or entrees but they looked good. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The chocolate lovers pinata though... that was amazing! SOOOO worth it! I was told it was huge but even still skeptical before my daughter broke it. Chocolate on chocolate, mini churros, strawberries, chocolate empanada bites (OMG!), more chocolate and caramel sauce too?! YUMMMMM! We gave it our very best effort to finish this monstrosity but eventually slowed down to giving in and taking home the rest for later that day. This chocolate pinata will be (at least) an annual tradition for us, and with a little planning beforehand, will continue to be a wonderful experience. read more

I've driven past this location of the chain many times and finally decided to stop in. It was pretty good. Nothing special. Polite servers and a decent menu of things. Not super vegetarian friendly but not bad. So, you might ask why I'm even bothering reviewing a meh place. Come to think of it, I'm not sure. I actually don't recall what I had or if it was anything more than average. That's not a good sign. But, I don't remember hating it either. And, this was just last week. The experience was kind of like meeting someone at a party and not remembering meeting them the next time you see them. OK, I've done enough damage here. On to the next review. I came here with coworkers over lunch and again today (Tuesday) after work. For lunch, there were like 8 of us and the food was good but one person's order was wrong and needed to be remade. This time I just went with a friend and everything was good but I got the wrong tortillas and we waited over 30 minutes for our second round of drinks. We literally were paying the bill and the drinks suddenly arrived. I guess I would go back because the food is tasty and it's in a convenient location, but the service can definitely be up-skilled. The inside of the restaurant is very nice. However, very crowded. Sat at the bar for a drink when a spot opened up and ended up eating there, too. We ordered the Juanitas platter and the combination enchiladas. The onion and cheese enchilada was pretty good. The taco and tamale were fairly bland. The beef enchilada was just average. The meal tasted a little cheap and overall was bland. The frijoles a la charra was hardly edible. Decent service, good drinks, fair prices. we went there on a Sunday afternoon and the place was empty. There were only 2 other customers in the entire restaurant and it was right around lunch time. This should have been our first red flag. we sat at the bar and ordered drinks and an appetizer. the bartender was nice but she definitely distracted. during the ordering she stared into space with a lost look. we paused our order think something was wrong. she replied stating that she was listening and we should continue. we told her we thought something was wrong because her attention was some place else. we asked why there were no customers and she said that it usually like that on Sundays it is real busy on Mondays and Fridays, ordered a beer and a soda and nachos. the beer came first and it tasted old and then asked for a different beer. her reply was she can't refund the beer. that the manager would need to come. we told her we did not care we want to try a different brand. it too was old and skunky. She took the beer and looked at it and put it down behind the bar and started to talk to other servers and trying to look busy. we sat there for nearly 20 minutes no commentary chips and our order was taking extremely long. we figured nacho is just chips, meat and sauce should only take about 5 minutes to be severed because there was no one else there the kitchen was not that busy. after 20 minutes we figured the food would be cold and still no chips we canceled the order. we the decided to leave. She said we can't. We got up left more that enough money to cover the 2 crappy beers and soda and walked out. The service was the worst we have ever seen no wonder there were no customers in there. we give places like this numerous chance but it has failed in the every aspect of a restaurant. the food [on other visits] was bland and tasteless , it came to the table cold and now poor service. I've been to Uncle Julio's a few times and have always enjoyed my meals. I moved to Wisconsin from Texas and this is probably the closest restaurant to Tex-Mex that I've been able to find, which says a lot coming from me. The queso is a little nacho cheese-ish for my liking but still not bad. I'd definitely come back again, especially once it warms up to sit on the patio! Uncle Julio's is known for their Mexican dishes made from scratch. From guacamole to aged and smoked meats. The menu offers Tex-mex, fajitas, and other dish varieties. We had a large group with reservations for a birthday. Our waiter did their best to manage our large group along with other surrounding tables. He was personable, humorous, and attentive. Warm, freshly made tortillas chips and salsa filled the table. They were delicious. I ordered the barbacoa beef fajitas and my husband got steak fajitas. It came with corn tortillas, black beans, and cilantro rice. I liked the zucchini, squash, peppers, and onion mix to top the beef fajitas. You get a large sized portion which makes great for left overs. We both liked our meals! A chocolate piñata was ordered for the birthday girl. It was a hardened rich chocolate ball filled with fresh pineapple, strawberries, and churro pieces. There was freshly made whip cream and melted chocolate. She got a wooden stick to break open the chocolate piñata. It was a unique dessert! This place was a unique experience to be had again. read more

It's a little hard to rate this one. The food was good and the staff was super nice and professional. However, the service wasn't always the best, and for me, the prices are just too high. We had a reservation and got there a few minutes early. Our table wasn't ready, and we were told we would have to wait. We'll our reservation time came and went and we were still waiting. After a while, we asked again and this time we were seated. There was a large area that wasn't being used except one table. Made me wonder why we had to wait so long. If you aren't going to keep reservations, don't take them. Since we had had plenty of time to review the menu prior to being seated we were ready to order quickly but had to wait for the drink order and complimentary chips and salsa. Both of those were great. We ordered the table side guacamole. It was very good but for me it wasn't worth $15. At best $7. The person who made the guac. didn't have nor bring chips to go with it. That seams strang to me. We weren't even halfway through our entee when we were asked about dessert. There's nothing like getting the bums rush. We did order a dessert but it came with no utensils to it eat with. Again the food was very good but $27 for a fajita bowl, not going to do that again. To sum it up, the food and staff was good. We were greeted and seated right away. It place is very noisy and seems quite popular. The chips are my favorite. The thin kind and the salsa was different than I'm used to. It's a brown Smokey flavor. I did like it. The menu is limited. Not like the one shown in the pictures. Many of the selections are priced for 2. I ordered the cheese and onion enchilada. The plate has two and at first I could cut it with a fork. I had to use a knife. The thin tortilla was dry or over cooked the other end of the enchilada was softer. It comes with a Spanish styled rice and a bowl of what I'd call chili beans. Much like what you get from a can. The rice seemed dry or like minute rice Spanish style. My husband had two fish tacos. They were nothing special. He said he's had better. All in all the food wasn't as good as I'd expected. Very commercial, not authentic. The server was average, pleasant and accommodating. The fact that there is a cheese and onion enchilada on the menu and it's not clearly stated that the sauce on top of them has meat in it is wild. Red enchilada sauce traditionally does not have meat in it! Even mentioned anywhere would be great. For a large chain this seems odd.. breaks trust as well. We went to Uncle Julio's looking for some Mexican food. The food was fantastic my wife got the street tacos and they were awesome. The service at the bar was phenomenal. He kept our drinks full talked to us and explained everything to us we even talked about our trip. The manager was out helping bus tables and talked to us also. A great experience. read more

My friend and his wife were in town for the Holidays and they invited my spouse and I to Uncle Julio's. Now to be honest I had never heard of this Mexican restaurant. My wife and I ordered the make your own taco meal, with a side of rice and beans. The meal was tasty, the rice at beans were particularly tasty, but they don't give you a lot. We order chicken and beef, I don't know what the bill was because my friend who treated refused to show it to me. The last time that happened, I covered the bill. Anyway, I'd go back, it's a little far from us, we usually go to the south side for Mexican, but I'd come back. My only issue is that these chain like Mexican restaurants don't ever have Chimichangas, my friend wanted some too. Overall the restaurant was very good. read more

Had my hopes up here as I walked in and it looked nice. However, the experience was quite disappointing. My first drink was served in a dangerously cracked glass with a sharp edge. When I pointed it out to the bartender and asked for another, there was no acknowledgement of the potential harm that could have come with swallowing glass shards. The margaritas were sitting in pitchers of ice ready to be pre poured. Not mixed to order. A quick $27 for two margs. Service time was horrendous. Took about 25 minutes to be spoken to after being seated. It wasn't busy and other tables were getting service quickly. We joked that our waitress seemed possibly intoxicated. Aside from the wait times, she got every single persons order wrong in some way or another. The food was decent but overpriced and didn't make up for the service. To add icing on the cake our waitress gave us a 10 minute warning to close, a nice passive aggressive ask to leave. This place is a bust. read more

Decided to give this place a shot today regardless of its 3 star review. It in all honestly deserves anything under 2 stars. For starters, we waited about 15 min for drinks. Btw the drinks are cheap and great I'll give them that. We waited another 25 min to be able to order our food. Just to mention the restaurant was not full at all. Then after ordering we waited an hour for our food to arrive at the table. The food arrived as soon as I was going to ask for my tab to leave and grab a bite elsewhere. I had ordered the carne asada, medium rare, and my better half ordered the tacos de carnitas. My carne asada entree came extremely well done and flavorless but boy was I hungry and just needed to eat something. Once my plate made it to the table the waitress said she forgot it came as a diner meaning with beans and rice and I had to wait again to get my beans and rice. My wife's carnita tacos came out extremely salty and the corn tortilla was moist almost wet. Had no actual flavor of authentic carnitas. All in all a terrible experience and will never return. Not authentic, not gourmet ,not even a sub par restaurant. Beautiful location though. read more

A party that entered two parties behind us already had their drinks and we still didn't have drink menu. Table side guacamole was made by someone who looked 15 and clearly doesn't know what he is doing. I complained to the manager who was walking around checking on customers. His response was he would talk to the kid. Did not offer to get us a new batch??? Food was good but when they brought out fajitas they said they would be back with shells. Received a gift card from coworkers because they knew I wanted to try this place. I think the outside looks very nice as well as the inside. The decor is pretty simple, clean looking and the restaurant is fairly open so you're definitely not crowded. The waitress came over rather quickly which was nice. She was friendly but after talking with other people that have been here, she didn't mention the guacamole service or anything extra you can get that doesn't come with/on what you order. She went over the drinks but a little fast so I really wasn't sure if there were any specials or if she was just naming off the most expensive ones. Either way, we opted for the regular margaritas on the rocks which were good. I ordered the Juanita platter as their menu is a bit pricey and I felt ordering this would get me the best deal. Two enchiladas, a crispy taco, and a tamale, with rice & beans for $17.00. The tamale was good but did have a bit too much sauce, that's almost all you taste so you really don't know it's a tamale. The crispy taco which had ground beef was actually amazing for just being a regular taco. This is where I wish the waitress would've asked if I wanted sour cream as that would have made it even better. The rice & beans are ok, not great but not terrible. I haven't had the enchiladas yet, they are still in the fridge. Those also have quite a bit of sauce/cheese on top so it might be the same as the tamale, that's all I'm going to taste. Normally, once you place your order, you expect the food to come out in a decent time. I ordered a platter and so did my guest, our food came out in about 10 mins. That seems way too fast for all of that food which makes me wonder, was any of it freshly made or are a lot of things made ahead of time and just put in the microwave? Overall, the waitress was friendly but didn't explain anything and the food is ok. Loved the look and feel of this place. Staff seemed pretty young. There were almost 4 girls standing at the greeting stand chatting. Wasn't the most professional interaction, but not rude or anything either. Our waiter was very pleasant, prompt and checked in often. Even refilled our chips and salsa before we needed it and were able to take the leftovers home. Chips were fresh and super thin and crisp just the way I like it. Salsa was not your standard one. Definitely a unique twist. More of a sweet bbq flavor that was very flavorful. Although the second batch wasn't as flavorful as the first. Might be lacking some consistency. Only other downside was it was a little watery making it pretty messy and hard to eat. The cloth napkins and ginormous menus also made the table feel crowded and messy. For as big as the physical menu is, the options are actually pretty limited. Started with the house margarita on the rocks and it was delicious. Best part of the meal. Very smooth taste and appreciated the salt on one side of the glass. I had the shrimp tacos. Waiter was nice to inform me the mayo purée was a little spicy so I got it on the side just in case. Turns out it was no where near as spicy as the black beans! The tacos were pretty standard. Nothing too special for the $17 that they cost. I did love that the mangos were julienned instead of cubed, making it easier to eat and stay in the taco. Hubby got the platter. Said it was good and filling but also $17 for basically meat in tortillas covered in sauce. I can see this place trying to stand out as an upscale ($$$) Tex-mex restaurant and differentiate from the traditional Mexican one. However, I think the quality of our food and type of cuisine in general holds it back from succeeding as one. I would much prefer the cheap and authentic Mexican food we know and love. read more

I had not been out to the Brookfield Square area in a long time. It is like an outdoor food court or a mecca of restaurants. The restaurant is in a standalone building with ample parking. The restaurant is large with a bar area, multiple dining rooms and patio. My husband and I had reservations at 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday. The restaurant was very busy when we're arrived. We were seated on time near the tortilla maker machine which is maybe the main dining area. It was extremely loud in the restaurant. So if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is night the place due to the poor acoustics. However the decor is nice and trendy. Now to the interesting part...the food. Like most Mexican restaurants you get the basket of chips with salsa. The chips are thin and light. The salsa has a smoky flavor and is not spicy. I asked for spicier salsa which was not as smoky but not much spicier. We started off with the ceviche. It was very tart with not much other flavor. Usually the ceviches I have had there is a more cilantro and onion flavor. I ordered the sangria. It was okay. Nothing special. I ordered the jalisco fajitas which came with shrimp, steak and chicken as well as their homemade tortillas. The portion was large and came with the usual accompaniments. Steak was cooked perfect medium rare (anything more is a sin), shrimp were also cooked well and even the chicken was meaty and not dry. Flavor was not that impressive though. The jalisco seasoning was not very spicy. My husband ordered the Juanita's platter. Which he said was okay. Bill total without tip was $71 and change. My take it's a place that would be good if you are looking for a fun, lively place to eat. The dessert they have I hear is pricey. But looks like a fun experience breaking open a chocolate pinata. 2nd time at this location: Going into this evening outing, Billy and I were slightly hesitant since our previous experience at Uncle Julio's was not pleasant. However, we decided to give it a chance since we were craving Mexican food. I needed to sit down after a long day of working on the farm. The horse was also tired so I let him get some rest while we ate. We were about to sit down when the sudden need to use the restroom hit us. We quickly ventured over to the restroom and took a long, long sniff. It had a tolerable aroma. The bathroom was in an acceptable condition with modern sinks. We ordered our food and enjoyed the nice environment for a while. My mother, an upstanding senior citizen, was quite disappointed with her enchilada. "My enchilada is overcooked," she said. Thankfully, our server was understanding to get her another one, and the second one was good. Cowboy Billy got a rice bowl and was shocked to see orange chunks - CARROTS were on top of the rice. Carrots were not listed as an ingredient on the menu. Absolutely SHOCKING! While we were eating, the elderly section of our group claimed to hear a "disturbing noise." There was also condensation on the pipes right above us. Overall, this was a good experience, and I would love to come back to my local Uncle Julio's. read more

My husband and I went here yesterday for lunch on Sunday, the food was subpar. The tortilla chips were extremely oily, cold and tasteless. I wanted a pina colada but was told they do not make them. The service was underwhelming and dining space was dirty. The building is good looking but that was all. I ordered shrimp fajitas, the shrimp was highly over seasoned, extensive use of salt. My husband ordered Carnitas, which he thought were very tasteful. We were supposed to get rice and beans with our order however the waitress never brought them out. I had to look for the waitress and ask her to bring out the rice and beans. When she did, I probably would've preferred her to keep them in the kitchen. The rice was over cooked, dry and burnt, the beans tasted like something from a can. I would compare their beans to baked beans at a barbecue with a little water and seasoning. The waitress asked if everything was OK I advised we did not care for the rice and beans, she stated we could take them home to the dog. I stated I wouldn't serve them to my dog.
