I stopped here for lunch after feeling a little peckish for Mexican. I've gotta admit, I've never been greeted with a brusk "can I help you?" upon entering a restaurant before. After stating my intent, the bar tender/server motioned at the tables and told me to sit anywhere, apparently disappointed that I wasn't there to drink at the bar. Let's hope the food is better, I thought. I ordered their fish tacos with a side of black beans and rice. The food was delivered on par with other lunch joints and their salsa and chips were good. When asked whether they had hotter salsa, the waitress (not the first guy) obliged me with a small bowl of their hot stuff. I was not disappointed. Be sure to ask for some if you like your food on the spicy side. The tacos were served on a wheat tortilla, as requested, and were good. The fish was cod and was flaky and flavorful. The rice and beans were, well, rice and beans. Adding their hot salsa soon set things right, however. Considering everything, it was an adequate lunch. I doubt I'll ever go back though. There are a lot of better choices within five minutes of this place. read more

Some internet sources say Hector's is not open on Fridays or Saturdays. This is wrong, I was pleased to find out on a recent visit to Wauwatosa. This is a mom and pop type restaurant that's been open for a long time and would be a nice bar to watch a game at--a Bucks game was playing when I was there. Service is friendly, not slick or obtrusive. I enjoyed the chips and salsa--the salsa had a slight heat to it that you get when it's homemade and some of the peppers might have been spicier that day. I had the spinach and mushroom enchiladas. They were covered with maybe a little too much cheese but were alright. Prices are reasonable. While I wasn't wowed by the food it was a nice meal. The low-key atmosphere is a nice change of pace from the flashier style of the chain restaurants nearby. Not a bad detour. read more

This is about as average Mexican food you can get in a restaurant with an average patio and an interior that is quite unflattering. The chips and salsa are just ok. The fajitas and mole were nothing special. It's wannabe authentic Mexican food, but is more like what your mom probably made you at home on Taco Tuesday. It caters to the Tosa crowd, and that's probably why it's been around so long. It's not great, it's not bad. The whole experience is just, well, average. Go a few blocks away to Bel Air or Paloma for a fun atmosphere and creative twist on tacos and other Mexican fare. Head to the south side if you want legit, authentic Mexican. Not my favorite, but overall decent! Our tortilla chips weren't salted which was very disappointing. The ground beef taco was my favorite of the combo plate #1, but the enchilada made me feel ill because it was way too much cheese (however, it was a cheese and onion enchilada so I should have known better). Will definitely have to give this place another try another time! read more

Wish I would have taken pictures! Have gone 4x in the last 2 months prior to catching a game downtown due to convenience and we all love Mexican food. Otherwise it had been my first time here ( my sister and her husband used to go 25+ years ago). Prices are amazing. Chips and salsa excellent. Loved my fish tacos , combination plate, chile relleno was good but I didn't care for the sauce much. My sisters salmon was beautiful and delicious, she's gotten it 2x now. Small restaurant feel with basic interior, TV, many sitting at the bar. Google has great reviews, my husband saw yelp didn't so suggested I add one! Next time I'll take pictures. I love it here. Hector's is a Mexican restaurant that has been in business in a Milwaukee suburb for 30 years. It is not a Mexican with a twist kind of place, it's an institution in Wauwatosa. They fry their own tortilla chips and make their own salsa. They put a lot of love in the food. We (2 people) split an order of steak fajitas and a signature salad (it had yummy grilled portobello mushrooms). It was a perfect lunch with a beer! The bar has that neighborhood bar feel and that is a great thing! Definitely worth a try if you can accept Hector's history! read more

Awful food. Spent over $100.00 and threw our meals away. I took 1 bite of my daughters seafood enchilada and spit it out, too fishy and too salty. Raspberry Margeritas were like water in that there really wasn't a raspberry flavor. I believe the only reason this place stays open is that it,s a place for the locals to hang out at the bar. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately the food was very underwhelming. I ordered the fish tacos which were unseasoned, drippy wet, and mushy. My husband's seafood enchiladas were ok but also tasted very bland. Chips were unsalted too. Our waiter was great! No complaints with service. I tried Hector's recently from the recommendation of a coworker who also lives in Tosa. The service was a little slow given how busy the restaurant wasn't, and the outdoor seating was limited and mostly in the sun. But the food portions were huge, and the taste was pretty darn good. I had enough for lunch and dinner and decided I would come back another time to take advantage of their specials. But that isn't why I'm writing this review. My bill was $20.47. I left what I believed to be a good tip of $4.53--an even $25 total. I remember thinking, "I don't usually round up like this, maybe the server won't like me being 'cute.'" But it was a good tip, and I like round numbers. It's also easier to confirm the accuracy of the amount later. I even made sure to hand my completed receipt directly to my server inside the restaurant so no one would snatch the bill from my outdoors table after I left. My credit card statement showed a charge of $30.47--which would have been an even $10 tip on the bill. I'm sure I did not leave a $10 tip on a $20.47 meal, especially because the service did not justify a nearly 50% tip. I don't know why my credit card statement showed an inflated $10 tip. I'm not saying someone at the restaurant ripped me off. But it's pretty clear something went screwy, and I was overcharged $5.47. What I am saying is that I won't go back to Hector's. When the tip I left doesn't match the tip I'm charged, I don't return to that restaurant. There are plenty of just as good, honest restaurants in the area. If you want to go to Hector's, you'll get a lot of food. The food probably will be pretty good. You may want to come back. If you do, I recommend paying in cash. I ordered a margarita of the month. It tasted nothing like a salted caramel apple. It was sweet and not at all flavorful. I was still charged for it, even though I sent it back and ordered something else my seafood enchiladas smelled fishy, which was questionable, but overall the service and food was tolerable. read more

Ohhh Hector's. I would give this place 3.5 stars if it was possible. If you're looking for no frills Mexican food, this is the place for you! The interior is darkish, illuminated by neon signs. Everything is very informal, from the staff dress to taking orders. The guacamole needed more salt and lime. Guacamole can set the tone for a meal, but luckily the entrees were better. The prices are very reasonable and I ordered the Puerco en Adobo. The pork seemed to have been marinating for a long time in the adobo since it was very tender. The dish came with tortillas, rice and beans. A garnish of cilantro would have been great! Hectors's has a lot of options and is a place to go for a quick bite after work, for comida en el medio. Also, the parking lot is a beast! It's tight to navigate so I would suggest street parking. read more

I know. I seem to be in the minority of reviewers here, but we just had an awful lunch at Hectors. Last time we were here, about five years ago, we had pretty much the same experience, however, based on comments we've heard sporadically when talking about Mexican food with others in Milwaukee, we thought we'd give them another shot. The good/OK part: 1). Good choice of Mexican beers at $4.00 a bottle. 2). They have Carnitas here; a traditional Mexican dish I have yet to find at any other Mexican restaurant I've been to in Milwaukee. Not bad, but no where near the norm I'm use to when eating Mexican food in Los Angeles. 3). Guacamole - Good; however, had way too much cilantro on board. 4). Spanish rice: The best thing we ate. Fluffy and tasty. 5). Good, attentive pleasant service (by Sheri S., per our check). The bad: 1). Cheese enchilada had a putrid flavor/smell to it. And running grease on the plate? What is that? Bad cheese? And salty, to boot. 2). Salsa also had way too much cilantro in it. They should call it cilantro salsa. 3. Frijoles: Terrible tasting. Terrible texture. Not sure what that smell/taste was, but it was so very unappetizing. 4. $7.90 for a small portion of the guacamole mentioned above in the good/ok part of this review. Really? $7.90 for what amounts to four or five tablespoons of guacamole. Hmmm? 5. Chips. Cheap, imitation Mexican corn chips that were stale. We observed others seemingly enjoying their meal, including what we overheard was an order of ceviche, served in hollowed out avocado halves. Hectors has been around for years--in fact, my parents used to come here frequently when they were my age. The food is really good and quite authentic, and the vibe is definitely one of a dive bar (which I love). The bartenders and servers are really nice and personable. I've gotten to know Steve pretty well and I really enjoy chatting with him! Everything on my plate was very middle-of-the-road. The chips and salsa are very good. I don't mind that there's an upcharge for refills, because it made sure I didn't spoil my appetite. It is fairly dark, and it's carpeted. Do with that information what you will. Hector's gets a resounding "it's fine" from me. I really would say 2.5 stars. Every six months or so, I say to my husband "you know, we haven't been to Hector's in a long time". And when we finish, I say "that's right, I remember why". Hector's get some extra credit for unusual offerings, and lots of tequila in the house margaritas. The chips and salsa are pretty crappy though, its WAY overpriced and everything seems to be a tad sticky. Best Chile relleno I've had within the state of Wisconsin. Second to actually have it fresh in Mexico on a trip once. They also have the BEST fish Friday tacos I've ever had. The slaw that goes on top is spicy, fair warning. Very laid back environment. Not too loud & not too quiet. my husband I visited this restaurant yesterday evening around 7:30. The restaurant had a funky not quite clean smell as if the cleaning rags haven't been changed. ordered a chicken quesadilla and a steak burrito. The burrito came out as three small rolled tacos and the quesadilla had chunks of very chewy chicken- possibly canned! Needless to say we didn't eat it took it home and threw it away! Phoned ahead over Memorial Day weekend to ask if there was a wait. One word reply was "no"! Walked in and bartender replied to my request for a table for 2, sit anywhere! Server eventually came by and literally threw menus on our table. Either she was having a bad day or was bored as she just wasn't very friendly or welcoming. She cleared the table next to us and I saw a dish of salsa go to the kitchen and couldn't help but wonder if it was the same dish she slid at us! Food was so so. Beans were lukewarm but shrimp taco was good. By the end of our meal our server did warm up a bit and even smiled. Perhaps she was upset no one was there so no tips or maybe she just wanted to be somewhere else. We did leave more than 30% tip hoping it might brighten her day. It's sad because we do like to support our local businesses and our daughter and her family love this place. This was our 2nd or 3rd visit. Not sure we'll be there again.
