Tex Mex, Mexican or whatever you call it... OKC has quite a few eateries with this theme of cuisine: On The Boarder, Abuelo's, Chelinos... I'm sure I'm forgetting some. But the field is pretty crowded. We, my mother, husband, baby and I ventured into Uncle Julio's on a Sunday afternoon. We had seen the eatery being built and seen some reviews... mainly the natives were getting hangry and we needed to get somewhere quick and get food into bellies. It must have been around noon/1pm on a Sunday and the place was packed, which was to be expected. Still, we were seated shortly. We managed to get a four top, in the back but facing a window overlooking the new development and a water feature. The inside is pretty and has the feeling of caverns and caves... For those of you old enough...think Casa Bonita vibes... minus the cliff divers and table flags (Uncle Julio's should really consider the table flag). The waitstaff started off attentive, but given the crowded lunch hour after church, I had a feeling this would not last. We started our orders with drinks. The prices are kinda steep for the drinks we ordered: three margaritas (one being raspberry). Nothing was that complicated or warranted the roughly $11 dollar price tag each or the forever wait to receive said beverages. My hubby does not even think he tasted any tequila. As I mentioned, we waited... and waited and waited for the drinks.... the chips came, and went. No drinks. The waiter, but not the first waiter, filled our waters... we requested more chips. Still no drinks. Then we waited... and no more chips and no drinks. They another waiter, I think our third waiter... presented us with our food. He seemed just as confused as we were. He passed around the food and we requested a follow up on our drinks, and gave up on the chips, but did request more salsa. Honestly, I cannot remember what I ordered. I can guess what I may have ordered, shrimp tacos?... honestly the food did not make any impression, other than it was expensive. More on that in a bit. My mom had the tuna and salad and she said it was bland. The hubby likely had a quesadilla... or burrito, but honestly he can't remember that either. The baby... well, she would have had cheese quesadilla, and as I have mentioned her palate is pretty off... I mean who does not eat the corn portion of the corn dog, so she her opinion not count. As I mentioned, the food and experience was not that spectacular... now the bill... that was the only part of the meal I found shocking. I believe our total for 3 adult entrees, 1 kids meal, and 3 margaritas was around $140.00 with tip... I honestly don't know why I tipped... but I tracked down the waiter, from the three that helped us the most and tipped him out right. The other two just made minor appearances and were no help in wrangling chips or drinks, or a second refill of water. I just cannot justify any part of the meal that warranted the cost to experience ratio. Honestly, I will be sticking to the standards as mentioned above, there are tons of places like this in the area, and skip this one all together. I just asked my hubby his thoughts... he was like "no" not interested in ever returning. Which, I find sad given the high hopes I had for this place. read more

Honestly it's so nice to have a place like this in Oklahoma City. My favorite and my family's favorite is the table side guacamole... my mother literally licked the stone bowl. Haha. Only down fall is It was hard to tell them to make it spicy. So we always ask for extra jalapeños on the side. Also they have An Amazing hot sauce salsa but they always seem to run out!! Ate here last night at 6:30pm... suddenly SICK to my stomach at 4am. I'm giving the restaurant two stars simply, because our server Megan was awesome, sweet and attentive, otherwise the food was awful! My husband had the chicken and cheese enchiladas. He stated the enchiladas were hard on the bottom. He could not even cut through the tortilla part of the enchilada. The guacamole appetizer is overpriced for the amount you get, and flavorless... probably worse Guacamole I've ever had. I had the veggie fajitas with a side of black beans. Hard to say exactly what made me sick, but I believe it was the black beans. The tables were sticky. The floors were disgusting. There was a menu on the floor, under the table that I slipped on. There were napkins on the floor and we witnessed several servers walk over the napkins and mess on the floor, instead of picking it up. The menu was limited due to covid and so they didn't have my favorite thing. Also I found some sort of plastic in my food and the people next to us found hair in their food. So many mixed reviews in person from friends and acquaintances...yet, I still tried it. It was my friend's birthday. He had picked up to-go several times and enjoyed the food. He had never eaten in the restaurant. The three of us went and it was awful from beginning to end. and even more so afterwards when I contacted their customer service on the website and they apparently can't read so it wasn't worth trying to rehash. The best thing I can do is share that this place is over rated, over priced, and I tried having the experience rectified, but it was not successful. Service was terrible. Waitress (named China) had to come back to the table 3 times to tell us food they were out of AFTER we had waited for over 20 minutes. Reordered and waited another 30 minutes. Three of us never got our food. Never got refills until we had finished. After about 25 more minutes our missing plates finally came out WITH THE CHECK. Waitress told us they told her all the food was on the table but she didn't bother checking or asking. She had an attitude, never bothered telling a manager. Rammed into my husband's elbow and shoulder twice. This location is absolutely horrible. It's like they never recovered from Covid. Poor service, our waiter was a jerk. Waited 10 minutes on water - the queso had lumps in it from being hot for so long (it was not hot when it came to the table). The waiter didn't bother to clear not one single plate, there was 4 of us so there was at least 10 scattered plates on top of chip bowls and tortilla bowls. If you were to look through my reviews, you'd see that I don't like giving bad reviews, but I am very displeased with my first visit to Uncle Julio's. Wednesday night about 8:27 we pulled up after checking Yelp for hours, my BF and I were headed for Italian but decided last minute to stop here. We'd heard that it was usually super busy and I figured since it's been open for several weeks that I wouldn't need a reservation. Seating wasn't a problem. There was both indoor and outdoor seats - we opted for indoor by the bar. Started off with margaritas, which were pretty good, albeit $13 bucks is steep, but it was really good. The table side guacamole preparation was pretty cool and you do get a lot of guac. Super fresh and tasty. Then it went down hill. Went for the Jalisco fajitas, which is shrimp, steak and chicken. Order went in, supposedly at 8:35-ish. My BF and I talked and enjoyed the salsa and guacamole for about 25 minutes before I realized the restaurant was nearly empty and we hadn't received our order. So we waited a bit and blew it off, made some jokes about having to catch the shrimp - you know how it gets. About 9:15 the waitress comes over and says she'll go check for us. 20 minutes later the food comes out barely sizzling, raw onions and peppers. We were both disappointed. When she came back 10 minutes later and asked how it was, I said it was a bit lackluster and she seemed offended. I didn't get that but my BF pointed out that she got snippy with me. I didn't care, it's an opinion about food. The manager did come comp the food and we covered the drinks. I may try this place again, but this is Oklahoma and there's lots to choose from, especially if your business is Tex-Mex. read more

I am always going to try to eat at local shops before heading out to a chain, but Uncle Julio's is the exception: For my money, this is the best Tex-Mex food in OKC. The queso is always good, the fajitas are always juicy and never overdone, the tableside guacamole is flavorful, the tortillas homemade, the salsa smoky, and the to-go/curbside reliable and accurate. I've been to uncle Julio's twice now! I love going in the summer and sitting on the patio! It is fun to sit outside and have a great drinks and Mexican food with friends! My favorite item on the menu is the table side guacamole! It is close the best guacamole I have ever had and it is so cool to watch it be made right at your table. I refuse to go to any other Mexican place for dinner. They have steak fajitas where you can order the steak any way you'd like, they also have lobster fajitas which are to die for. If you're drinking, I recommend the El Jefe (a spicy marg that comes in a shaker) or the Tres Amigos marg that has a shot of tequila on top in an upside down lime. Great service. Great food. Uncle Julio's- Absolutely Horrible Experience this time! $90,00 including tip for 6 tacos and 2 sides. Bought a bottle of wine told it could be corked to go if not all drank. Comes time to cork it and we are told even though it is the law in Oklahoma that it can not be done, not allowed in Texas so the answer is no! Bet they are reselling the rest of our bottle. Will never go back! Total Rip Off! So disappointed! Sorry for the rant as I usually don't do this but I am flabbergasted over this. We visited on Veterans Day. The restaurant was busy, even had long waits forming as we left. I made reservations as we had 5 people and it was a Sunday. Our son was visiting from NC, on military leave. I didn't see any mention of Veterans Day in the restaurant. This was our first time ever eating at Uncle Julio's. I thought it was very disappointing. It didn't live up to the hype. The food doesn't match the high prices. We didn't have dessert or alcohol just 5 meals, 5 drinks and our bill was $178. If the food would have been better quality then maybe $178 wouldn't seem so bad. I am not a Teds fan but would much rather have eaten there if that gives you any idea. I had grilled chicken that came with some weird sauce. My husband had mixed fajitas, he said it was ok. Kids had enchiladas and variety platters so I feel we got a good sampling of their main dishes, none of which impressed any of us. They do serve chips and salsa but the salsa is warm and has a weird flavor. I won't be going back, it's basic Tex Mex for a caviar price. read more

My fajitas were very sweet, some people would probably like that but to me it was too gross to eat. My husband enjoyed his tacos but said they weren't spicy. I think the good reviews are well deserved. My husband and I live in the area so we are excited for this addition to Chisholm Creek. The queso is much better than the free stuff you receive at most restaurants now, and our portions were large and DELICIOUS justifying the (only slightly) higher price. No, they dont give free watered down powdered "cheese dip" like Ted's does and like every other fine Mexican food restaurant outside this God forsaken state, they actually charge for Queso...yes, that's right, its queso. If you call it cheese dip you have no right to be heard...stick with Teds. You cant find better fajitas in this State...yes, it costs more but the food quality is unmatched. The Dr pepper is good. Which is important for a Mexican restaurant. The prices are VERY high for a Mexican restaurant, that is this typical. The queso was super disappointing. It was Velveeta.... One star only because you can't rate zero stars. My wife and I stopped in at 4:00 on Labor Day. They were busy, but not super busy. We were seated immediately and given menus; but never saw our server again. After about 15-minutes and seeing people around us being seated, getting drinks and chips, we left. It's not my job to hunt down my server like some of the people in the other reviews. It's sad to see so much invested in opening a restaurant be wasted by poor management, poor training, and poor service. After seeing several of my friends' Instagram stories featuring a chocolate piñata (!!) I just had to try one for myself. A few friends and I went for a post exam week celebration and had a great experience. It definitely lived up to the hype! I've been back a few times since, and not just for the piñata. Despite being a fairly large restaurant, the service is very quick and the food is great! I've gotten the Queso Blanco appetizer and Agave Queso Chicken entree every time because I just loved it that much. And of course, the Chocolate Lovers Piñata. The enchiladas were dry and needed more cheese. There was a sprinkle of cheese were it left half the enchilada without cheese and without flavor. Service was at the table, but the hostess didn't even take our name cause there was a employee meeting going on and it cause us to be passed up in line. There seems to be some praise to the food yet it's really not that good, and the price for EVERYTHING is much too high. My girlfriend ordered chicken enchiladas. I ordered a taco salad. My taco salad was $15. Unsure of her entree's price. I was recommended fajita chicken and the food came out with beef, which actually looked kind of good. Our waitress took it back and by the time my girlfriend finished her food, or half of it, and telling me it was mediocre my food came out. My chicken tasted more like charcoal than chicken. I let my waitress know and she offered to ADD beef to my salad... I said whatever and just mixed the proteins. The beef was kind of greasy but a large improvement.
