Chicken Shawarma Plate ($14.90) with rice, salad, hummus, and pita bread.

I have been waiting to write this review for the longest time, and I'm so glad I finally got to try Uncle Sal's. Uncle Sal's is a humble, unpretentious restaurant located at Garden City Shopping Centre. There is no indoor seating (only outdoors), and I wouldn't consider eating outside a wise choice since it's been so cold recently. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate ($14.90) - it comes with hummus, salad, and pita bread. The chicken is drizzled with generous amounts of tahini sauce and hot sauce. The hummus is rich and creamy, a perfect companion with pita bread. And salad is just salad, but the tangy dressing makes it 100 times better. The chicken shawarma plate is absolutely delicious. Actually, delicious would be an understatement -- it is a must try and if you're reading this, I think you should stop and get some chicken shawarma. I'm very fond of chicken shawarma because it used to be my go-to for finals season and I'm very glad that Uncle Sal's exists so I can continue the tradition. xx Ren

Al Basha Last visit 8/1/19 Our intial visit only 2 weeks earlier, blew me away. Based on the chicken shawarma alone, would've given them a 9.6. Seriously the most flavourful takeout chicken I've ever had.  The generously stuffed wrap contained only 1 piece of gristle / fat, & fresh veggies. However, I asked for *everything*, including a 50 cent surcharge for extra toppings (tabouleh, tsatzike, & garlic spray). 2nd visit, ordered the chicken shawarma again, this time without the 50 cent extra toppings. Well, the 50 cents is definitely worth it, but this 2nd time the chicken wasn't as intense or as high grade (4 pieces of gristle this time). Had this been my only epxerience here, I would've scored them 8.7. So clearly more visits were in order in order to determine if the 1st or 2nd visit was the norm; although I've now realized the extra succulent chicken the 1st visit was probably due to our arrival just before closing (longer marinating time). By the 4th or 5th visit, it was pretty clear: the chicken shawarma or rice plates were both delicious, but falafel is where it's at: this is the best* falafel either myself or the Mrs have tried. *we've had more elevated falafel during Dine Out at Fable, but in terms of just plain old falafel; the texture, the flavour, the sear, and the consistency, Al Basha is the best we've ever had. Falafel wrap: 5 stars. Warning, not sufficiently filling as a meal for most. Either order 2 wraps, or a falafel plate, or falafel and meat (you can pair it with chicken, lamb, or beef) if you don't fancy ordering 2). Chicken Shawarma (wrap): 4.25-5 stars Al Basha plate (chicken & rice plate) 4.5 stars, Mix meat & falafel plate (chicken, beef or lamb w/ falafels) we had chicken 4.75 stars. The rice is nicely cooked on their plates, and the extra carbs are very filling. However, I prefer the veggies used in the wraps to provide crunch and texture, vs the small (but tasty) salad as part of a rice plate. The hummus is excellent, but using the wrap bread, with nothing more done to enhance them (not even toasted)... It's not as good as a toasted buttered naan bread, so flavour wise I prefer the wraps; but in terms of being full, the rice plates are the winners. We still have to try the beef and lamb, but it's hard *not* to order the best falafels in town. Overall 9.3/10, 4.75 stars. Loads of parking at the Blundell minimall, they take cc, and seriously the best overall falafel either the Mrs or myself have enjoyed. Recommended: everything so far. Paying the 50 cents extra. Waiting til the end of the day (or, presumably after lunch, like say 1:30-2:00pm) for the chicken to be extra marinated. Falafel any time of the day. Avoid: ordering just 1 falafel wrap.

Very friendly customer service and generous portions! I tried the chicken and falafel shawarma and enjoyed it a lot! I thought the pita bread was just okay though, but its similar to any other pita you'll get in Vancouver.

Lamb shawarma, large tabbouleh & dolmathes.
    A. L.

Ordered lamb shawarma, tabbouleh & dolmathes. Hands down, the wrap was awesomely delicious! Packed with flavour & tons of meat. Best shawarma I've had yet. Tabbouleh was too lemony for my liking. Dolmathes was standard. I'll be going back again & again just for the shawarma! Oh, they have signs for social distancing but I think the staff themselves should be wearing masks.

The moment you enter, the owner greets you warmly. The food is good too. I recommend ordering the Al Basha special, it is delicious. It comes with chicken, rice, pita, salad, and hummus. This dish can be made spicy for those who prefer. They are also environmentally friendly, they don't use styrofoam for their takeout orders.

This was on the drive up from the ferry station so we gave it a shot. When we first arrived around 1PM, it was packed- all 4 tables taken. By the time we ordered ~20min later, one had cleared up- people eat pretty fast here. Seems to be a very popular place for working lunches. Their service is quite fast. We tried a couple of different dishes. I had the chicken salad (large), which was a solid portion for one person and great if you're craving something light. I recommend getting the red spicy sauce and white sauce to dress it. The chicken was sadly dry but decent flavor. My sister tried the chicken wrap, which was saucy and delicious. May want to get a small side dish if you like a larger meal, but I actually preferred this to my salad. My parents shared the mixed meat plate, which was the largest-portion item we tried, but not large enough to split between two people. The beef was juicier than the chicken. Solid food option for a casual lunch (just beware seating), great for take-out!

Definitely try to go at opening or when it is not busy, as the dine-in experience is memorable - they place your order in a long wooden board to make it a beautiful spread. We got the Manoush'eh Special which has ground beef, pomegranate, etc and Sham Style which is shaped like a boat. We also tried the yogurt drink which pairs well with the dishes. The only con is that this place does not have free water, but it is no problem to have our own water bottles supplementing the meal. We also got the lentil soup which is pretty good. Definitely sufficient to share one to try, but the Manoush'eh outshines the rest of the items. I loved the quality and texture of the Manoush'eh and just the breads in general. It is a lot of food for 2 people so if you want a snack, you can definitely just share 1. Some people go here for the wraps too. Overall, an affordable restaurant with good food. We got the most expensive items and it was less than 50 CAD all-in, but a lot of the items are around the 10 CAD mark.

It's especially good if you have a group of people dining with you. That way you can share different dishes and enjoy lots of different flavors. The Mixed Plate is especially good for that. I have seen from their menu online that they also offer something called Padisha's Table which requires a minimum of 4 adults ordering it, and costs $36 per person. For this visit we had the following: Beyti Sarma Small Mixed Plate Cheese Lovers Pide Lamb Durum Wrap Veggie Guvech Turkish Coffee Turkish Tea The Small Mixed Plate came with a humungous slab of lavash bread! It was crazy how big this piece of bread was. We were a group of 5 people and this Small Mixed Plate by itself could have been our lunch. It was such a huge piece of bread. Sooo good though. They baked it in the oven until it got all nice and puffy, and it came to our table piping hot. I always enjoy this Mixed Plate starter. It comes with such a nice variety of dips. My absolute favorite dip though is the Baba Ghannush. I think next time I eat at this restaurant, I will add on a separate order of the Baba Ghannush so I enjoy more of it than what comes in the Mixed Plate starter! I loved my Veggie Guvech. The veggies were roasted and baked to perfection. I'm someone who likes my food soft, so I was happy to find that the veggies in this dish were nice and soft. The menu description says that this dish comes with Lavash. I didn't see any more Lavash bread come other than the huge slab that came with our Small Mixed Plate. Perhaps they did this on purpose though. The one huge piece of bread is equivalent to several smaller pieces that you might get in other restaurants. I certainly didn't need anything more than the huge piece of bread we'd already been served, so was very glad not to see anything else come with my Veggie Guvech. If you're a cheese love, you can't go wrong with the Cheese Lovers Pide. It's our daughter's "go to" dish when we order from this restaurant. She really loves her cheese! The people who ordered Lamb Durum Wrap said the lamb inside their wraps was very moist and tender. I do recall also hearing good things about lamb dishes from this restaurant in the past, when we ordered takeout from them. The Turkish Coffee and Tea come in some beautifully designed cups. I have travelled to Turkey in the past and enjoyed a hot apple tea in a Turkish Tea cup. The cup that was used here was very much like the cup I drank from in Turkey. I never had coffee when I was in Turkey, but judging from how unique the design of the cup here was, it's probably a very traditional design for a Turkish coffee cup since the Turkish Tea cup was just like the ones I saw in Turkey. Highly recommend this place! There aren't a lot of Turkish restaurants within Metro Vancouver. This place is an absolute gem!
