I've been getting sandwiches here for years so it is tough to write a negative review, but I just can't with this place anymore. The food is terribly inconsistent they get orders wrong all the time because they almost never write anything down. Honestly I've put up with that for a while because its just deli sandwiches and they are just ok, but its pretty over priced and I feel like the lady at the register just makes the prices up sometimes. (I can't prove that but I have my suspicions) But the final straw is their rudeness, look I have worked multiple jobs in the service industry I know how hard it is to deal with customers day in and day out especially in a town like Darien, but there is just no excuse for the attitudes I see from the staff there. I write this review with a heavy heart. I would love to positively review Uncle's but I can't. The only redeeming quality of this local establishment is its location. It has only 4 very tight parking spaces and several outdoor tables. There is no room inside the Deli at all; you're like sardines standing there, ordering, paying and waiting for your order. I have been to Uncle's enough to qualify for a free sandwich. One day my steak sandwich was not cooked thoroughly and some parts were red and still mooing. On my next visit I told the cooks about it: I was told I should have asked for it to be well done. Don't most places assume well done steak sandwiches unless you ask otherwise? So it was MY fault. They did not offer another sandwich nor did they offer a refund or a credit. Another day I order a burger (well done) with fries. I receive my burger but no fries. I ask where my fries are and the cashier tells me I should have asked for the platter. There was a long line and I had to wait for my fries. Again it was MY fault. I asked for a burger and fries...why didn't the cook ask me anything? He just ignored my request for fries because he didn't hear the word platter? Two of the three cooks there do not speak English well. The cashier was very rude. Again no offer of making it good for my wait. I paid for my burger and fries and waited TWICE. The food here is no better than any other local dive. They have nothing original. They have been around a long time so that must buy them some slack. I stopped going there; I don't need to pay for rude service where I'm wrong when they screw up! read more

The local greasy spoon deli of Darien. Unfortunately all the grease, fat and mayo added to the food still doesn't seem capable of producing a palatable result. Just about the only redeeming factors of Uncles are its convenient location right on the post road in the center of Darien and it's absurdly large portion sizes. At $9.99 a sandwich you will 100% get two meals out of any sandwich you buy. Sadly though the globs of heavy mayo ....(and that's saying something because I love mayo), inferior ingredients and poor technique applied to their preparation really drags uncles down. The meat is often burned or slimy. The eggs and bacon are either under done/raw or over done and burned. My friend recently got food poisoning from one of their breakfast sandwiches. If I'm going to eat something soaked in fat or incredibly unhealthy, it better taste amazing and somehow uncles isn't capable of this. Alas, this place is a textbook lesson on location. It is always packed and there really aren't many more options that are as centrally located in Darien. shoot for Panera or UCBC for a safer option in the area. read more

The cashier makes up joke prices- $12.00 for a chicken sandwich is highway robbery. There are countless times when I have came home and my order has been completely wrong. I just want to say I never complain or right a review but this time I have to. The people who work there are so rude not nice and never say thank you or you're welcome. I work in the customer service business and I know when you want to give your customers a good service they expect that. I and others where I work agree. I like the food but it makes me not want to get my lunch there. Usually it's the other way around when the food sucks the service is great. But always hearing that they are not clean and dirty that makes me not even order again. Agree with many reviewers who find nothing special about uncle's. I was rooting for the new location in North Stamford but was not impressed. The California wrap was tasteless chicken salad on a stale wrap and they forgot the avocado as promised. At $8.50 it was a big disappointment. When I selected two stars for this review Yelp automatically put up the phrase "Meh. I've experienced better" and that is exactly how I feel about Uncles. The rub here is that I really want to like this place, as I like sandwiches, grew up going to deli's, and try to always send my business to local places that support the community. With that said, Uncle's Deli sucks. The previous reviews pretty much sum up the bad: artificially created long line, egregious prices, and constantly making mistakes/over-charging at the register. Uncles is Mama Carmela's older, angsty brother. The staff is really friendly to regulars but insanely offputting to newcomers and the food is definitely overpriced for a "deli." I have been a long patron of Uncle's Deli. I've long thought the customer service was pretty bad, but I laughed it out as being a NY Deli style in Darien. I've recently moved to town and taken a different opinion of this establishment. They are centered in the heart of Darien and quite honestly is probably the ugliest representation Darien could have, to those who pass through town or work here. The attitude of the lady who tends the register & is apparently the owner, otherwise she would have been fired by now, is simply sad. She has the ability to be known well known as person and probably crosses paths with almost half of Darien over the course of the month. She chooses to be rude and totally writes off customer interaction. I've been going here for a few years and never once was there any sort of recognition, or appreciation to their loyal customers. I go to other local establishments which is similar to Uncles, less often because Uncle's is closest to me, and they are beyond friendly with considerably less visits. I know where I'm going from here on. I also take exception to the fact Uncles is the restaurant at both Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point. Both of their outposts, are filthy, flies all over the place, poorly staffed, poorly stocked and hours are unreliable. Why the town renews their leases at both these locations is unfortunate. I could only suspect no other deli is there to compete, but in my opinion they should just leave the spaces vacant rather than have a poor operation to represent our town, than these poorly operated outposts such as Uncles. Food here is marginal, nothing is bad, but nothing is remarkable or any better than what you can get elsewhere nearby. The cost sets it apart, they are very expensive which makes their average food, a bad deal. This is offset by their location which is very convenient. They capitalize on location, location, location. They have no reason to change and have proven the same. I only hope the lady at the register can soon realize, a smile will go a long way to making her business so much better. read more

The first few times ive given this deli a try werent good. Small, reheated chicken cutlets thatre more breading than chicken. Breakfast is also very skimpy. Service is the worst part. I dont have a pic to add bc i order a steak quesadilla (20 mins before arriving) and waited outside for 25 mins for them to have never started the order. Hooray for Uncle's! Halfway through the drive to or from my in-law's house on Long Island and my house in Rhode Island, I always seem to get hunger pangs. Darien, CT it always the nearest exit, and there sits Uncle's Deli, a very short distance from the exit. It's a simple operation, as long as you know the structure - enter through the back, get in line, order when called upon, get your sandwich, pay and exit through the front door. There are a few picnic tables out front, but not many. No seating or bathrooms indoors, so have a plan before you order. Now for the food: these sandwiches are GREAT. Huge, fresh, tasty and filling - everything you need in a sandwich. Most options are wraps, but they do have panini and 'wedge' sandwiches. You can also make your own up- there's an entire board listing all the available ingredients should none of the options on the main board appeal to you. Me? I went with the Smokehouse -smoked turkey, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard. In all honesty, I would have preferred another condiment over honey mustard, as it's not my favorite (and this one was HOT -like, wasabi hot) -I think a dab of mayo or perhaps even guacamole would have been perfect. With your sandwich, you get a free Snickers mini, which is cute. The staff is efficient and friendly, and they have a large selection of beverages and chips to add to your meal. All in all, I'd say Uncle's is my new favorite pit stop for those long-ass and boring trips through CT. read more

This is a great deli most days of the week. However nowadays avoid the Sunday squad at all costs. Completely new group separate from the regulars who have run the day to day for years. I admit, I eat here at least twice a week with an office in Darien. I can walk there, so it's the best deli in walking distance. It is above average for a deli for sure, but I judge a good deli by how well they can make an Italian; Theirs is so-so. They do offer generous helpings of meat on each sandwich, so if you like stuffed sandwiches, you'll be happy enough to return. I recommend the Rachel. Recent visit: two guys were standing there talking for five minutes before anyone asks me for my order. The "cook" who was standing there talking to his friend decided to ask for my order. While I tried to give my order he continued to talk to his friend who was standing there. They loudly talking back and forth about his girl friend catching him masturbating at home. My new favorite deli!! This location is right off the main road on Darien - really small inside - no seating there but a few tables outside. Mostly a grab and go type spot. Nice to be able to see the grill and what the chefs are working on! Great menu with every option you could want. Prices are great. Lots of breakfast options and tons of lunch items. They have different breads to choose from and even small and large wraps - nice! Delicious breakfast sandwiches - the Greek wrap is my go to.
