I left Uniboil feeling bad about my time here. The experience was awkward and the service was poor. They are quite disorganized and every person is treated differently. Some are sat immediately, others have to ask for water, food wait times are inconsistent, etc. One thing I ordered was forgotten and I was charged for it? The waitress was impatient with me then outright ignored me.
I walked inside and someone was paying at the register. When they were done I was spoken to in Chinese and after saying I didn't speak Chinese I was told to wait for a clean table. As I stood there waiting while other diners kept staring at me, the table was sprayed and cleaned right in front of me and I was seated at this damp perfumey table despite the numerous empty tables around me (some needing to be cleared, some clear).
The menu is confusing but I marked my choices and the menu was taken from me. Then the same lady came back to tell me in Chinese something (once again I made it clear I can't speak the language) and was told I need to pick a spiciness level. There's no place to mark this on the menu. I asked how spicy medium is, she replied "Noooo. I SAID. You can pick a spicy level. Medium, mild, or very spicy."
The pickled cucumbers I ordered was never brought out, and neither was water. The flowering tea I ordered was brought out in 5 minutes. Then someone who came in after me was brought their hotpot. Another 20 minutes and my hotpot came out, and I asked for a water. People came in during this time and were seated immediately at all the other clean tables. I saw checks being brought to tables, water being brought to people immediately.....
There were two guests that clearly knew the lady who sat me (or were return customers) and they went up to the register to pay, but were told to sit and the check would be brought to them. Someone had just gone up to the register to pay and was taken care of there. Some are brought checks, some go up, it is different for everyone.
When I was ready to leave, I went up to the register to pay since I was not checked on once after my food came out and I didn't want to flag someone down and wait. I stood in front of the register while the lady prepared someones receipt and ignored me. The other person working there was busy with something else. After more minutes pass by, I was asked what table I sat at. The cashier looked back and forth between my table and punched in numbers, so I assumed they didnt pre-enter my order and I didn't need to mention the pickled cucumbers. They charge .50 for cards and 1.00 for international cards, so I paid cash. I was FINALLY given my receipt and the total was ~25.00. I guess I was too tired to do math correctly in my head because I just wanted to leave. My hotpot was 14.99 and the drink was 3.25. My total with tax should have been around ~$20.00. I just gave her my bills and this lady, didn't have change, so dug through a receipt box to find some spare bills at the bottom and took so much time to get the correct amount in change back for me. And before counting my change she took the time to place all those disregarded spare bills back into the register. I just wanted to be out of there..!
I am beyond disappointed in my experience here. I felt so awkward, and other times ignored. The service was enough for me to say I will never be back here. I hate writing bad reviews and I wish I could have liked this place which is in such a nice location downtown. Potential wasted! Also I forgot... there was not that much meat in my hotpot and I normally don't finish meals when I go out but I finished everything and was still a bit hungry. Even with the drink! read more
