The first time I came, I loved it. The second time, which was today, didn't love it. It was still good, but just wasn't amazing. I got truffle fries for my side and they didn't taste like truffle at all. They tasted like regular fries. Our waitress was so kind and brought me a whole new order with extra truffle. They were better, but still lacking. I got a side of garlic aioli that tasted like plain mayo. Maybe it's just me, but I want to be able to taste the garlic and the truffle in my food. I got the pb&j burger with truffle fries both times I came. Love pb&j burgers and love truffle fries. Visited Union Ale House on a Thursday evening around 7. Sort of a maze of a restaurant with booth, lounge seating, small bar area and outdoor seating area. We saw they also have live music some nights as well brunch. They were semi -busy when we arrived. They have a daily special week days and unfortunately we just missed Happy Hour which on Thursday which is specials on apps and beer. They also have a good amount of Mainstays and revolving taps which keeps things interesting. We had a Wasserhound Purebred Pilsner (local), Allagash and Cherry Limeade. So many interesting items on the menu! We started with the Buffalo Cauliflower and Fig/Goat Cheese Flatbread (although we wanted to try all the apps). IPA Tempura Cauliflower in Buffalo sauce-need I say more?! The Flatbread was amazing and could easily be an entree! We didn't have room for the fried deviled eggs which have received rave reviews -next time. For entrees, we ordered a couple of the Mushroom Gruyere Burgers, Brunch Burger & Southern Fried Chicken. Burgers were tasty as they use Hereford beef and char grill them. We really enjoyed the Gruyere burgers adding bacon to one. Only complaint is burgers all came out medium well and we asked for medium. The Chicken sandwich has won a local award and didn't disappoint. We just moved here and it's been fun trying new places to eat- this place is hands down SO GOOD! I've had this place bookmarked for a while so I decided to give it a try while in VB! On Friday and Saturday nights, they have live music. The aesthetics of this place is beautiful! I started with the fried deviled eggs, as recommended by my server. I personally didn't care for them, but it seems to be a fan fave! Definitely something new to try. I decided to try the meatloaf as my entree. I think the gravy or whatever sauce was on top really gave it a nice touch. I never order meatloaf at restaurants so this was adventurous for me, but it was tasty and they give you a great portion. Decided on Union Ale House during one of our "Meatless Fridays" and it did not disappoint! The parking lot was a little confusing to navigate (just us??) and we found it tricky to find a spot because the surrounding stores have their own parking spots with signs. I found the inside of the restaurant really cool and definitely seems like something was there before the Ale House took over. The happy hour ROCKS, and they have daily specials as well. Also, live music on Fridays and Saturdays, and we have a few friends who go to their bingo every week! We're not vegetarian, but were impressed by the amount of vegetarian options. We started with the Buffalo Cauliflower Bites, and I got the Elote Burger with a Beyond Meat Patty and my husband got the Fish Tacos. The Cauliflower Bites-- amazing!! I would say almost better than regular chicken wings. I ended up picking off the Elote Fritter from my burger and just eating that because the Beyond Meat was not the move... not the restaurants fault, I guess I just prefer real meat!! The Elote was amazing and 10/10. My husband really enjoyed his fish tacos as well! Well breaded and filling. Towards the end of our meal I was a little put off that out of all the empty tables, the host sat another couple RIGHT beside us. Like less than 3 feet away. I understand that there's a rotation they follow for the servers... but give us some room especially if the restaurant is empty! I've picked up several takeout orders from this restaurant for myself and for delivery using door dash and they are consistently and extremely late almost every time I pick up an order. I was there last on 23JAN24 @ 6:35 and didn't receive my small order until 30+min later when it was supposed to be ready by 6:35, This has happened to me several times to the point I hate picking up take out from the union Ale House. I've dined in at this restaurant because I live in the area, and the food & service is great when you dine in not so much take out. For a laid back atmosphere, the food is definitely off the chain! For some reason I always have a hard time figuring out what to order due to the fact everything is excellent. Today, I ordered the avocado BLT. Be prepared for a huge portion, it's a pound of bacon! If your not an avocado fan, I suggest trying it at least. It's pretty awesome and I'm not exactly a huge fan of avocados. For me it's a textural thing. Kiddo ordered the PBJ burger. Fantastic, and may I suggest with both meals, extra napkins! What a burger! We stopped in for an early dinner. We ordered the Elote Burger, Poke Bowl and we ordered a little steak with mac and cheese for our 2 year old. The corn fritter atop my burger was fantastic. I ordered it medium rare. The burger came out perfect. It looked so tasty that I forgot to take a picture before I started in to it. Had found this local restaurant a couple years ago. This was our fourth or fifth time there. Wait staff is very attentive and friendly. The buffalo cauliflower is still very good-serving size has shrunk a little. Street sized Fish tacos were tasty but more like appetizer sized. Serving them with 10 french fries on a plate versus their previous way-is less appealing. The Friday half price flat bread was much less tasty then last time. Not sure if it was the ingredients on the Margherita or the actual flatbread is different. Next time would just return for a drink and cauliflower-not a meal. This place is wonderful! We came in around 5:30 on a Friday night with what started as a group of 5 and eventually turned into a group of 9. They were very friendly and accommodating as we needed to change tables once before adding several more friends. (We later moved to the patio for drinks after dinner- there was a nice little firepit area we were able to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. Dog friendly!) It seemed they weren't too busy, and easily sat us all together. My husband surprised me by ordering the Buffalo Cauliflower app. It was SO good. It came with a large portion and both ranch and blue cheese and a good amount of greens. The flavor and crunch were on point. I think I could eat the entire bowl just as my meal. He ordered the Black N Bleu flatbread and while he thought it was good, I don't think it was quite as large/filling as he was hoping. I, on the other hand, got the fish tacos and those were plenty filling and absolutely delicious. The crunch of the breading was perfect, and complemented so well by the sauce and the veggies. Very fresh! It also came with a side of fries, which were crunchy on the outside and incredibly flavorful. I actually shared some of these with my husband because the tacos were so filling, particularly after the buffalo cauliflower. They had a really great beer selection with some nice happy hour specials (unbeknown to us until the check came!) and our server was absolutely wonderful. I went there for brunch on a Sunday. We were a group of 4 and got there right when they opened. The service was very good.....I would hope so since we were the only ones in there. :) Can't beat $2 mimosas. That was a pleasant surprise. We started with Buffalo Cauliflower which was very good. I had the poke bowl which was plenty big and delicious. I only wish they had different dressings like a sesame or Asian style dressing. Today is my traditional #dateyourwifewednesday! So we visited Union Ale in Virginia Beach. Here's the scoop.. Walking in you see a sign that says "Vaxx'd Up? Mask'd up? Don't care. Drink up!" It's great that things are slowly returning to normal, but the sign? Meh....I have not lost a family member to COVID, but if I had, I'd probably walk right out as the "don't care" seems unprofessional and insensitive. I get the excitement about no more mask mandate, but simply removing the "masks required" signs from doors would certainly be both professional and sufficient. Furthermore, as someone who is immune system compromised (and living in wisdom, not fear), I believe that sign certainly appeals to the non-vaccinated and non-masked, and those who have the luxury of not having to exercise caution because of more fortunate health conditions. I didn't ask for my condition, so to remember to be kind and considerate to everyone with their words and expressions would have been much appreciated. Now onto the food...I ordered the PB&J Burger which came highly recommended ($12). My wife ordered the Surf and Turf Nachos appetizer for her meal ($14). Let's start with the burger... I wasn't sure what I thought about peanut butter on a burger. I'm not a big peanut butter fan anyway so I asked for the peanut butter on the side. Ultimately, I put the peanut butter on the burger and it was good, but for me the peanut butter was overpowering. That said, this was truly one of the best burgers I've had. It was cooked to perfection, perfect temperature! And the peach flavored jam that accompanied the peanut butter was amazing. I will order this sandwich again, but I will order it without peanut butter. The only other downside is that it was very messy. The bun got soggy with grease, and when I picked it up for every bite my hands were very greasy. But other than that, this sandwich is insanely good and absolutely worth the price! When it came to the Surf and Turf nachos, my wife asked to substitute shrimp for extra steak which they were more than happy to do. The nachos were just okay. Unfortunately we felt that the nachos were soggy because of the sauce that is put on top of them. She ordered the pico de gallo on the side as well, and the sauce that they put on top of the nachos, to me, wasn't my favorite. At the end of our meal when our waitress, Emily, came to gather our dishes and ask us how our meal was, she noticed the nachos were barely touched so we told her that we did not like the nachos that much, but we weren't saying that to ask for a refund or for anything else. In a pleasant surprise, when she returned with the check she removed the nachos from our bill. That was very nice of her and a great move in my opinion for a restaurant to do. That's another reason why we will certainly be back. All in all, I'd give it four and a half stars instead of five. That's only because of the nachos, but I do believe the nachos are a fan favorite, I just think we didn't care for them. We do look forward to visiting this place again and we definitely recommend this place, based on the friendliness of our server and my burger. It really and truly was an amazing burger, cooked to perfection! read more

Me and my husband came here on a Sunday at lunch time after striking out on a few places around the area. Luckily there was no wait and we were quickly seated. The inside is nice and I liked the wood décor and plants. Our waitress was quick to take our order and bring us waters. I ordered the Union Bene which was eggs benedict topped with carnitas. I loved this dish! I have had something similar before so I knew I would enjoy it. The carnitas were tender and the eggs cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the spicy chicken and waffles and although they were not spicy, they were delicious. The chicken was perfectly fried and the waffles were crispy. I thought the cherries on top were a nice touch of sweetness too. This place was not busy and a much more relaxed environment than a lot of other places in the area. Saturday Brunch Three Times Now This is our third visit on a Saturday morning/afternoon. The first time was afternoon. Second was at 9:30 a.m. (about a month ago) and today around 11 a.m. Today was a little bit of a surprise as we found out that brunch had moved from 9 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. We had to kill time for about 15 minutes but well worth it for a $3 Bloody Mary. The good deal on brunch drinks is a nice bonus but the real keeper at this place is the food. In our 3 visits, we have had the burger, Chicken and Waffles, Breakfast Poutine, Fish and Chips and Meatloaf. Somebody in the kitchen knows what they are doing. All of these meals were delicious. The only request would be to have syrup alongside the cherries on the chicken and waffles. But still a very good dish. We have sat at the bar each time and have enjoyed the servers, Amber and Christian. We have also enjoyed the clientele that we have gotten to know at the bar! All of them realize that the food is very good and fairly priced. My wife and I highly recommend the FOOD and beverage to anyone anywhere near the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.
