First timer and I adore Union! The dining area is lined with terrarium bench seating, an art gallery and shop, creating a high end experience that still felt very personable and inviting. For drinks I recommend the Electric Daisy. The crushed Sichuan Peppercorns on the rim leaves an enjoyable, LIGHT, numbing sensation that makes this guava based cocktail feel even more refreshing! Easy to have multiple in one setting, so be careful For eats, be sure to try the Swordfish Katsu - perfectly breaded and adorned with pan-seared peaches, kale and aoli. Union is intentional from interior design to its menu, with a staff that is eager and ready to make sure you have the best experience. Buttery savory salty warm ugHHH. The longanisa, peas, and tons of basil were perfect. 100/10 Halibut Oscar - the lump crab was an indulgence and I loved the flavors. Great sauce. Only con - halibut was a bit fishy! 9/10 Roasted Cauliflower (cold) - refreshing, crunchy and smokey. Reminded me of vietnamese goi or papaya salad. Super cool restaurant at a super cool location, it was inside an art gallery called the Compound that has rotating art exhibits. Came here for Father's Day and there was a live dj music that was perfect for the vibe, this is what I expect Sunday brunch to feel like as opposed to a pre party to a main event. They encouraged us to check out the exhibit after we ordered, so it didn't feel like we waited too long for the food to arrive. We ordered the shrimp toast, tamago sando (the sweet and sour fish sauce gave it a true umami flavor), coconut fried rice, and the cassava hash with sausage (great substitute for potatoes and you can't even tell the difference!). STEPH JUDGEMENT: Great place for a casual but stylish and refined hang. What a wonderful addition to the Compound! I've been several times now for happy hour and brunch and have been impressed every time. The vibe is fancy LA museum cafe, but relaxed and friendly. I guess it also helped that on all my visits the weather had been absolutely gorgeous, which played well with their indoor/outdoor openness and the beautiful patio. I also enjoyed hanging out at their beautiful bar in the back. I've tried the following items thus far: - Pancit with fried egg - Gem salad - Roasted cauliflower - Shrimp toast - Oyster mushroom skewer - Cassava hash with avocado and egg The grilled oyster mushrooms are my absolute fave but everything else has been really good too--so fresh with such great flavors! Honestly, the five stars is for the service! We were a group of 8 on a Saturday night (which is always hard) and one of us has food allergies (me). Not easy to find Asian fusion with gluten free options (soy sauce is the bane of my existence- thank god for Tamari). But Alaina (sp?), our server, handled our table beautifully. We basically ordered the whole menu! People loved the gnocchi, the galbi, and the oyster mushroom. I was able to have the oyster mushroom (so flavorful!), the cauliflower and the crispy rice salad. The latter two were fine but not filling so I ordered the burger with lettuce wrap sub. That was tasty when you add the carmelized onions but bland without. The pork buns were good on the inside, I heard, but the bread was hard and tasteless. (Usually these buns have a soft, fluffy bread which has a touch of sweetness. This is what happens when you have a table full of the SE Asian and Asian diaspora!) We LOVED the space and appreciated the mocktails for sober folks. I definitely will be back! I have soooo much to say (good things) about my first experience at Union, but here are the highlights. 1. Immediately greeted by extremely kind and thoughtful staff upon entry to the courtyard, and that kindness and attentiveness lasted the entire few hours we were at Union and enjoying Compound overall. Literally every single staff person we interacted with was great. It felt like they all enjoy working there, and I love when I get to experience that. Sarah, in particular, was amazing to say the least! 2. The space itself was as lovely as I expected. A multifunctional art, restaurant, and community space. What a dream! 3. We arrived right as the kitchen was transitioning from brunch to dinner and were invited to grab a drink and enjoy the exhibits until dinner started which wasn't a problem at all. What we ordered: Summer Corn Fritters, Roasted Cauliflower, Pancit and Swordfish Katsu for food. The Swordfish Katsu was one of a kind. With peaches, a dill sauce and kale... loved it! We visited during Long Beach Food Scene Week which allowed us the opportunity to try a limited time dessert - Boozy Shaved Ice. So good! For drinks we tried Grain & Smoke Paloma, Blush Crush, Electric Daisy and the Heirloom Gin & Tonic. All amazing and I'm not even exaggerating. Union has been on my radar for some time now, what with it being a modern Filipino restaurant helmed by a promising chef and housed inside Compound, a community arts and wellness space in Long Beach. So when friends asked us to brunch I suggested we check out Union. On the weekend we came, the weather was still warm enough to eat outdoors and brunch was served in the courtyard space. We ordered several dishes to share and I got myself a matcha latte. The shrimp toast, tamago sando, and cassava hash were our favorites. Service was friendly and unhurried and we had a great time. We visited this resto for the first time to celebrate another year of friendship and our annual holiday get together. Since we were a large party, we emailed with the resto to secure our reservations. Joy was a great to work with. While I always prefer to schedule via a website or an app, the communication process was quite pleasant and Joy was quite responsive. We were seated outside and the day was a bit of a chilly one. The staff was quite accommodating and brought us an extra heater. They also provide lap blankets! The brunch menu was as on offer and it was difficult to choose, but we decided to order to share: Kaya toast. This is more a merienda, afternoon snack for me; but I wanted to try their version. Union is a really cool, unassuming restaurant located at Compound, an art, wellness and cultural space. I came across this place when my friend invited me to see an artist panel and exhibit here. It's tucked away in the industrial, yet creative pocket off Anaheim St and Coronado Ave. Chef Eugene Santiago uses locally sourced ingredients in his New American and Asian-inspired dishes. It's rare to see a fully stocked bar in an art gallery serving craft cocktails as well as local beer and wine. I tried the Zestpresso Martini and boy was it strong! I wasn't complaining though! The espresso and orange peel gave it a smooth finish. The Roasted Cauliflower was served cold, but it was crispy and so flavorful with tamarind dressing, Thai basil, cilantro, dill, shallots, cucumber, and fried onion. I wanted to try the Mochiko Fried Chicken Sandwich, but they were out of it for the day, so I went with the Tamago (egg) Sando. There was a generous portion of creamy egg salad in lightly toasted milk bread, topped with scallion and fried onion. The tamarind sauce added a little kick to it too. Plenty of tables outside in the patio as well as inside. Service was quick and helpful. 4.5 stars, I will round up to 5 for my rating. We had been to Compound a few years ago for their art exhibit, but decided to check out the newly opened Union, located inside the Compound complex. Parking is still fairly challenging to find on the street, though there is apparently a parking lot nearby open only on Fridays and Saturdays that Union will validate for. The interior is gorgeous, expected given the location. We chose to dine outdoors over the pebbles. When it gets cold, there are complimentary blankets as well as heat lamps. There are quite a few tables when you add up the outside and indoor dining areas. For now, Union focuses on dinner 4PM-10PM, but does open a little earlier on Sundays from 2PM-8PM. Apparently, they will soon be expanding to brunch service too. Service was amazing, with very attentive servers who were friendly and helpful. The menu is pretty small, but prices not outrageously high and portions decent for the large plates. The kare kare was great, though I am used to oxtail kare kare and would have liked more green beans and eggplant; I loved all of the cartilage/tendon in the riblets though. The roasted chicken was truly outstanding, juicy with crispy skin and moist tender meat, plus it was served with sunchokes which I love. The taro chips were great, albeit a bit salty, and the papaya salad was refreshing though very mild (I am used to the strong papaya salads with chilies, peanuts, more lime juice, and fish sauce). We also tried their apple galette with POG (passion + [blood] orange + guava) sorbet + special pandan panna cotta for St. Patrick's Day as dessert. Both desserts were delicious, but my favorite was the gelato. Presentation of all the dishes was stunning, and the food truly exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend and I wish Union the best of luck! P.S. Since my last review I am thrilled to share that I have frequented Union many times for not only brunch but dinner as well. My experiences have all been great, just like this evening! Service was so friendly and welcoming as per usual. Ambiance is always beautiful and interesting, I always choose to sit outdoors. Food and mocktails were so tasty! Tonight my friend and I shared several delicious dishes. I particularly enjoyed the Sweet Potato Gnocchi- great texture from the roasted peas, smear of pesto underneath, pillowy gnocchi pasta, and other herby goodness. The Halibut Oscar was also delicious though I wish there was more of the creamy lemongrass beurre blanc sauce. Also, no meal at Union is complete for me without a mocktail. Flipino restaurant Union inside @Compound - what a vibrant and unique concept! Most dishes we got was delicious. I would come back for the rib eye and pancit! The dish I would skip next time would be the apple Galette. I didn't know what it was so wanted to give it a try - maybe I'm not familiar with it to enjoy but it's basically a french flat cake, a pie dough with your choice of fillings. Drinks were good - if you like smoky flavors with a spicy kick try the Slow Burn. Service was excellent. No complains there. There is a valet parking lot next to the compound or if you're lucky you can find street parking. Just be careful and don't leave your belongings visible in the car. I was a little confused about this restaurant, but from what I gathered, it's inside "Compound," which has a couple of contemporary art pieces inside. We went for brunch/lunch and I got the union burger. It was delicious with the dripping egg on top mmm. The brick toast known as "Kaya" had the perfect balance of sweetness to it. It's been a while I've liked brick toast, probably the last time was at Guppies if you remember that place! This one was just as good if not better! The ambiance felt very cozy, chill vibe. Located in the "Compound" in a residential/warehouse section of Long Beach Union is a bit hard to find since if you Google "Union Restaurant" you will likely end up in Pasadena. In any case, once you find it you enter a spacious sculpture garden or a dining room in a renovated warehouse that resembles an art gallery. Everything is quiet and spacious, with an air of refinement. The service was a bit inexperienced but helpful; we had some issues with the wine that were rectified by the sommelier. We just ordered two dishes: the black cod served with more so, daikon, and other ingredients in a Filipino comfort soup". The daikon that was crunchy and possibly pickled. Recommend a side of the coconut laced fragrant jasmine rice to sop up the broth. I enjoyed the marinated skirt steak served with an interesting white raisin sauce that was surprisingly complex yet not too sweet. We had the tapioca pudding with mango, papaya and black sesame crisps. The atmosphere could be compared favorably to a posh European museum restaurant with an unexpected Filipino twist. Try it out. Came here on a Friday night for dinner. Parking here was difficult, I was lucky enough to find a spot on the street by moving someone's trash cans. They also offer valet for a decent fee. The restaurant was located in an art gallery with beautiful pieces of art and a nice gift shop. Since it was a Friday night, it was pretty busy and they even had a DJ. The menu was mainly Filipino fine dining fusion. For my appetizer I ordered the cassava bravas. It was okay, I didn't really like it. The bravas sauce tasted more like pasta sauce to me and it tasted very tart. I also ordered the pork kare kare and it was pretty good. Interesting space for a restaurant, in a good way. Part art venue, part dining space and bar. I loved walking in and immediately seeing the huge outdoor dining area. Relaxing, with plenty of shade, heat lamps and even blankets to make sure everyone is comfortable regardless of the weather. It happened to be a gorgeous day yesterday so it created a chill vibe to hang out, enjoy the sunshine and their delicious cocktails. Sam was our server, fun and knowledgeable of the food/bar menu. She recommended some mezcal's that I really enjoyed. Everyone went out of their way to be courteous and friendly. We spoke with the manager, also a Sam, about hosting company events or parties in the space. She was very helpful in describing all the possibilities. We were treated to the Tamago sandwich which was basically just an egg salad sandwich, on thick, toasted white bread, topped with green onions and crispy fried onions. Simple, nostalgic and satisfying, the bread has a nice flavor and texture and the crispy onions add a tasty little crunch. It's stuffed with a generous amount of filling so it can be enough for one person or a nice snack to share. Parking can be a bit tricky as usual but we ubered and Sam did mention a parking structure that would be utilized soon. I look forward to returning to try the dinner menu. I went for the classic. Avocado toast. This avocado toast is done on a thick slice of country bread. Toasted and topped with the perfect amount of avocado. The bread kinda tasted like sourdough with olive oil. Yumm! The day I went was Mother's Day so there was a little extra menu for the special occasion. I think the cauliflower was the best of all three starters, yet all three starters we would gladly order again! The detailed layering of flavors for all dishes was impressive. For our large plates, we ordered the roasted rosemary chicken, the short ribs with coconut rice, and the halibut. Much as with the starters, all three were delicious, creative and complex. We would order all three again in a heartbeat! We barely had enough room for dessert, but we just had to order both the lavender London fog cake and the strawberry peach rose sorbet. Both were beautifully crafted and we would order both again. I didn't have much room for dessert after the beautiful starters and large plates but the desserts were so good that I had some of both and they did not disappoint. The cake was incredibly moist and the lavender cream cheese icing was perfectly balanced for that cake. And the strawberry peach rose sorbet was refreshing with all three flavors coming through. We each also had a cocktail and much like all of the food and desserts, they were carefully composed, beautiful, and absolutely delicious. To summit it up, this was such a lovely experience that we will definitely be back. Anyone going to the Long Beach Playhouse could not find a better restaurant nearby to begin your theater night experience. Thank you to the staff and service staff. If you really want to impress your date (and have a spare $100 or so), Union (at Compound) in Long Beach is a sure bet. It's in an art gallery setting with plenty of tables indoors and out (I'd suggest indoors, where most of the really impressive ambiance and art is). We ordered the Fried Chicken Bao Bun as an appetizer (tasty) and then I ordered the Double-Cut Pork Chop. It may have been the best pork chop I have ever eaten. Very good drinks also. My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Union. Got lucky with street parking but supposedly they have a lot. Eating a nice meal in what is essentially an art gallery is also pretty cool. We ordered the kale sprouts, the shrimp toast, the kare kare, and the fried chicken bao buns and everything was delicious. The kale sprouts is something I want to try and recreate for a holiday side dish. The addition of julienne apple, sweet potato purée, and pork belly just seems like a delicious Fall dish. The shrimp toast had the perfect mixture of textures with the crunch and softness from the focaccia and smoothness of the shrimp. It tasted so good and the herbs added a very nice freshness. The fried chicken bao bun was the perfect Asian twist on an improved Popeyes spicy sandwich. The kare kare was the only dish my wife and I were critical of. She is half Filipino and I guess that makes us hyper critical of Filipino dishes. The kare kare was really good don't get me wrong. I just wish it had some more green beans and that I was given a spoon to scoop up the tasty sauce. Filipino food is always eaten with a spoon and fork, don't they know this? Haha. Went here for a random date night and we were not dressed for a place like this. Customer service was great overall. The staff were attentive and friendly. It felt like eating in an art museum and the food was good. A nice choice for an artsy fancy dining experience. read more

I went to the Baryo Community Market at Compound with a friend and discovered this wonderful restaurant occupies the space now! In the past we have always enjoyed seeing whatever artsy events Compound has been hosting and we're excited to hear they are active once again. I'm so glad to see Union bring alive this lovely space and utilize its full potential. I ordered the roasted kale sprouts that come with big chunks of pork belly that were perfectly crispy and delicious. I didn't realize this was a small plate, so it might be better shared or ordered with other menu items. However, my favorite bite actually ended up being the dish my friend ordered, which was the large plate of oyster mushroom skewers. It came with two generous oyster mushroom kebabs, coconut rice, and a small green papaya salad. The mushrooms were meaty and well-seasoned (notes of lemongrass?) Next time I come I'll be sure to ordered one of those plates for myself. Other menu items that caught my eye were that they have pancit and kare kare, YUM! As for drinks, we tried a few of their signature cocktails. The list is filled with unique offerings and made it hard to pick just one. The Tropic is made with pandan syrup and I really enjoyed it. Fave cocktail of the night, however, goes to The Wildflower. If you love passion fruit, that drink is a dream and quite refreshing. Service was great and the servers were friendly and informative. At the end of our meal they didn't bring the bill for awhile, so when we were ready to leave we just walked up to the bar and paid there. It's understandable given the high traffic due to the event going on. Although the menu is a bit pricy, it is worth it to me for great food/drink and a fun, hip night out. Overall I loved it! It makes my Fil-Am foodie heart so happy this place is here and I'm sooo ready to eat more in the future :) read more

Wanted to like this place given the positive reviews, but have to give it a hard pass. We don't usually venture to Long Beach eateries (we're a mainstay at DTLA restaurants), and this is precisely why. Servers were very nice, layout was spacious, artwork was quite sterile. But the toughest things to deal was the incredibly slow service (2.5 hours easy, maybe longer), and the mediocre food. The chicken could not have been any drier, the burger fell short of fast food equivalents. We were there for dinner, and they were not serving a few of the entrees that evening. Again, nice place, nice people. But I would ask management to compare yourself to similar restaurants (not in LB), and honestly access the quality of your product versus others. P.s. They charge for a side of Ranch for the Burger, thought that was a bit pedestrian. read more

Well, I was expecting what I saw in pictures and read in reviews and was told by my daughter (half Filipino) and her boyfriend who had been there before during an "event". However, none of that was the case. The choices were few in every category including from the bar. The portions were small especially the starters. The fusion twist was not tasty. The best bet, IMO, IF they have it on their menu - which is seasonal so do look on their website for current offerings - was the burger. Union is a beautiful, cool space. This art gallery now has added a restaurant. The cocktail program is very well considered and curated. The talent behind the bar is exceptional. They are holding down the fort here. The menu and kitchen in my opinion is playing it too safe with fried chicken sandwich's on Bao bread with sriracha mayo. Yawn. It has no opinion or statement to make, no story to tell here.its Filipino inspired blah blah blah. Pancit noodle and a disgusting perversion of shrimp toast served on focaccia. Was way too bready and didn't do the dish justice. Disliked this very much. You've got work to do on your menu Baryo. I challenge you to do better. This could be a better restaurant if they only had better food. This was my second visit. Cocktails outstanding, food so so. read more
