Let me just say, Chef RJ, Mercedes, and the whole staff are always so welcoming! We were happy to find out that they had moved their location, which was originally in LA to downtown Long Beach, which is closer to us. Being that my wife is Panamanian. We had frequent to LA location several times and were always welcomed with open arms and great food. Our visit this time with something special because it was my birthday, to our surprise Mercedes gifted us a complementary bottle of wine for my birthday. We shared a ceviche as an appetizer and for our entrées, Sanya had the fried red snapper and I enjoyed oxtail. The food is always on point and just like eating at home. The ambience of the restaurant is classy and also modern with a Panamanian feel & a great choice of background music also. Highly recommend this restaurant for great vibes, outstanding food and great service.

I stopped by late in the evening, about 30 minutes before closing & they were still incredibly welcoming. I had a few questions about the dishes, and they took the time to answer all my questions. I ordered the stew chicken everything was amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked probably slow cooked because the meat practically melted off the bone. The sauce was delicious rich, brown, slightly sweet, with carrots and just a very mild kick of spice. Absolutely on point. The rice was cooked perfectly, and I loved the added peas. The cabbage had a pickled vinegar taste that paired really well with the meal. And I can't forget the plantain it was great too. OMG I'm definitely going back

Food is very good. Very good! We had a reservation at 3pm when they just opened. All the food was made to order so we were in restaurant from 3-6PM. But had some great music and good company with the Chef RJ, Mercedes and their staff. My parents even got a little tour of the restaurant (upstairs) where there's a little lounge that can house 30 people or so We started out with the patacones, yuka frita, and ceviche. So good, reminded me of when my grandma's cooking. The ceviche was more on the sweeter side and was served crackers but we put it on top of the patacone and it was the perfect balance of salty and sweet. We also got a tamarindo, which was more on the sour than sweet side. And a sour sap, AMAZING! I would stop in here just for the juice. And everything is made from scratch. Next was the red snapper. Let me preface, I do not like cooked fish, but this... this was amazing. Finger licking good. The fish was cooked to a crisp that was so flavorful. Of course, if you haven't had red snapper before and you decide to order it, beware, LOTS of tiny bones. But this will be one of the best fish you'll have. And as grandpa said, you can never have too much lemon on the fish. Next, the arroz. Mom said this was traditional arroz con pollo with the green olives mixed in. But lined with the plantain, this dish had us ready to ROLL out. It was so good, very flavorful. The chicken? TENDER. Falling off the bone. The rum cake was soft, creamy and buttery. The rum sauce on top was to die for. You can taste the rum but it wasn't over powering. Even though we were busting at the seams and took home the arroz, we finished the rum cake. remember when I said everything was made from scratch? The cake and the frosting too. Absolutely delicious. Huge KUDOS to Chef RJ & Mercedes. Thank you for such a delicious meal!

Is not easy to find panamanian food in the US. We visited this restaurant in on Wilshire but it was just opening for lunch so not much was available. I'm happy to be able to try it out and have it walking distance from our condo. Came in on a quiet Wednesday night. Met the owner, her husband is from Panama and makes some good empanadas and fried plantains. We tried the ceviche and also the ox tail. Both delicious. Bright yellow interiors wirh arches, it is festive and warm. If you're craving Caribbean leaning Panamanian food I'd recommend it. P.S. one of my fav is arroz con guandú, working I only get when I go back home .

Came to Long Beach to try the stuffed fish however, they ran out as it is a very popular item on the menu. We instead got the fried snapper, jerk chicken, plantains, fried green plantains, and jerk Mac n cheese. Jerk chicken was nice and juicy with great flavor. The plate comes with rice and greens, but we had to get it with cabbage as they ran out of the greens. Also had a side salad. Jerk Mac N Cheese was really good and tasted great as the jerk flavor gave a special kick. Plantains and green plantains were fried to perfection. The fried snapper was so good. The fish was cooked perfectly as it was moist and the flavored seasoning were great. Was supposed to come with the greens, but as stated earlier they ran out. Would have been a 5 star visit, but as I said before they ran out of items, so it made the visit a little disappointing. Also, be patient waiting for your food as everything is made to order, and will take some time to prepare. The owner came to the table and explained everything and we will be going back, but we will definitely be there when they open to ensure we get exactly what we want to try.

A Panamanian restaurant on Pine Avenue? Yes, please! What a great addition to DTLB offering culture and flavors of the Caribbean. I went on their grand opening on New Year's Eve and it was lit! The decor and energy of the place made me feel like I was in Panama. Our table was right by the DJ, percussionists and dance floor so we kept getting up and dancing when bangers came on. I really wanted to try the oxtail but I had to leave for another party in 30 minutes, so I had to order something quicker. The shrimp salad was just what I needed. There were 7 plump pieces of shrimp that were marinated in a red sauce, but it wasn't spicy. The greens were fresh and the house vinaigrette was light and delicious. The Yuca Frita were crispy, not greasy and had just the right touch of salt. The Carne Empanada was so good! I can tell the meat had been slow cooked and made with love and amazing spices. They only have non-alcoholic beverages at this time. I tried the Caribbean Breeze, which was a refreshing mix of coconut juice, lime and a little pineapple. The servers were very kind and attentive. I'll be back for the oxtail and for more dancing!

Fantastic service and outstanding food!!! We went for my brother-in-law's birthday dinner and had a large group of family and friends. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was superb, staff communication was highly impressive, and of course the cusine was over-the-top OUTSTANDING!!! I am highly recommended that you make this restaurant a priority for your next visit to Downtown Long Beach and order everything!!! We will be back for more!!!

Recent addition to Long Beach. We loved this place in their old location which was far for us. We are very excited that they are right in our neighborhood. They are pretty new here, so I think they have few things to work out still. The service was a bit slow although we were the only ones there. Portions are not big for the price point but they have to survive and pay their bills in this prime location, but I'm not sure if this would draw me back in. So, I get it and these are the times we are living in. Mercedes is as wonderful as always. Definitely a big focus on the Caribbean dishes vs Latin ones. Few items were not available and I found that this happened at times in their old location as well. This will be a great spot for large parties and events and I think this will be a big focus for them as this place is huge. The exterior looks like it needs a little work. It looked dark and unwelcoming. Like I said, I'm sure they are still working things out. I wish them well and I hope they succeed. I hope for some less expensive specials and happy hour. Not a fan of crackers with Ceviche, but this is possibly traditional. Seafood was minimal in the ceviche and the price point didn't match the amount of seafood one would expect or hope to get.

It's a nice cute restaurant. Excellent customer service. Excellent food. I've been craving it ever since I had it. I had the fried red snapper. Mango wings. Passionfruit lemonade. Oxtails. Pantacones. Everything was delicious.

Visiting this restaurant for LBBRW. There are very many areas her that still need work. That said, our visit was not the best. More than half the items on the menu were not available. Understanding that they are still getting their bearings we just accepted what they had available. The salad and soursop lemonade were delicious. Amanda, our hostess tried her best to explain the various dishes. She was great a very helpful. I saw who may be the owner engage with larger parties and not so much smaller ones. That made it feel very unwelcoming. Opening a new restaurant, you would want to engage with all your guests as best as possible. Being personable is key to attracting repeat guests. I'm not going to complain about the food, it was palatable and a lot of room for improvement. Every business has it's up and down days. So much potential here, in addition to being great addition to LB diverse food culture.

pollo Guisado was a instant reminder of good memories. Packed with flavor with every bite. 10/10.

Definitely worth it! The vibes are unmatched. It's a unique blend of "top notch cocktail crafting" and "beer and a hot pretzel after work." You can dress up, you can dress down, it's very 'just be yourself' which I love. I've literally had caviar AND hot dogs there in the same night at an event. They know how to blend high/low. Incredible knowledge and ingredients but not snooty patootie. Super inclusive and fun, with cool popups and events happening all the time. It's a full bar so you can get any cocktail you would normally order if you're keeping it simple, or beer, wine, boilermakers, etc. There's a span of offerings and price points, so something for everyone. (Also really good N/A cocktails!) The menu is super inventive and creative! And the cocktail menu changes out every so often so there are new things to try. This area is vintage vibes and Baby Gee speaks it fluently. Really cool decor, curated by the owners who design everything from the playlist to the cocktails to the invention of never-before-seen flavors and shapes of jello shots. Try the Baby Gee appletini while you're there. Mezcal, tequila, sake appletini you ask?? Yes. Trust. And get a hot dog. Do it.

I really wanted to love this place. The vibe was fantastic...great music, a stylish ambiance, and…read morean impressive selection of specialty craft cocktails. It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

Finally one of them approached us and shared the menu, another gentleman came to the bar and he was quickly greeted with a hello and our same server immediately shared the menu. The gentleman politely said, these ladies were here first please take their order first, which the server did but was not so happy about. To our surprise the server still prepared his drinks first. The gentleman very surprised apologized since he knew we were there before him. With our drinks in hand we found a table with some empty seats. The table side where we sat had a sprite glass bottle and a glass that hadn't been picked up since the last party left. We moved it a side to set our drinks and finally enjoy our conversation. A different server came to the table and asked the gentleman next to us to get his empty glass and she completely ignored our side. She did another round and I finally asked her to pick up the bottle that was left by another party before us. I asked her for the menu again, she brought it but she did say that I had go back up to the bar to order any additional drinks. We decided to not order a second round and head up to the terrace.

We recently visited Secret Island Tiki which has been on our list for a while. It is located on the…read morecorner of Broadway and Pine under Shannon's. We parked in the multi-story parking garage behind Hamburger Mary's. Secret Island is a little over a block away. You can make reservations on OpenTable. It has a bit of a speakeasy entrance, as it is not plainly marked. Look for the staircase going down with greenery around it and the Secret Island sign downstairs. Go right at the bottom of the stairs and there is a little walkway where you see a very cool tiki display. It you stay there long enough, the lights will flash and you will hear thunder. Walk a little further and go through the door to enter. I was blown away by the atmosphere and build. Kudos to Bamboo Ben! It is dimly lit with a ton of cave wall, bamboo, thatch, netting, tiki lights, floats, skulls, tikis, and other décor. The bar is loaded with bottles and looks great with dark blue and green backlighting. The bar top is wood with deep cutouts that are filled with clear epoxy. The booths in the main dining area are little tiki huts and even have clouds overhead. There was great tiki music playing the whole time. A few times an hour a thunderstorm hits. The lights dim, lightning flashes with thunder sound effects, and red lights illuminate cracks in the floor that looks like lava veins. There is also a photo-op "Pele's Throne" which is a big lava rock surrounded chair. We sat at the bar and had the coconut shrimp appetizer ($12). The shrimp were breaded and cooked well, and had a coconut sprinkle on top. The spicy dipping sauce complemented the shrimp well. I started out with the Drunken Monkey (Makers Mark 46, Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, cinnamon, allspice, Angostura bitters, normally $19, $17 during happy hour). It was somewhat bourbon forward with a little funk from the Jamaican rum. I definitely got the cinnamon notes with a little banana and allspice in the background. She started out with the El Capitan Hook (Del Maguey mezcal, pineapple, banana liqueur, Luxardo cherry liqueur, lime, $17, $15 during happy hour). This was smoke forward with light pineapple and banana flavor. I had the Hula burger ($18) which was very good with a lot of different flavors from the various toppings. It came with a decent amount of fries, and was a filling plate. She had the pineapple bowl fried rice and added with BBQ pork ($17 + $5 for pork add-on). It is served in half of a scooped out pineapple and had a good amount of rice with pork and green onions on top. It had a good mix of teriyaki sauce on the rice and BBQ sauce on the pork. Next, I had the Rum Runner (coconut and blended dark rums, banana liqueur, raspberry, grenadine, pineapple, orange, lime, $18, $15 during happy hour). It was very pineapple and coconut forward which overpowered all of the other ingredients. She also had the Let That ManGo (white rhum agricole, coconut, mango, lemon, $18, $16 during happy hour). The primary flavors here were mango with some grassiness from the agricole. We were here from about 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead with only a few other people in the place the whole time. They do have a stage in the back with live music acts, so it is probably busier when there is entertainment and on weekends. Our first bartender was Alex who was nice but we barely talked with him. Manager Pedro took over the bartender duties later on and we had a great time chatting with him. Service was great from both of them. The drinks are a few dollars above average, but if you come during happy hour, the drinks are several dollars off. Happy hour is currently all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and Thursday through Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. The food was good, the drinks were ok to good, and the atmosphere was great. Normally, this would probably be a one and done, but I really liked the build and would like to come back when it is busier, maybe on a weekend.

The inside is lovely upon entering and could be a very fun birthday experience or bar experience. The bartender her tonight was not kind at all. My girlfriend and I came in excited, however we were not greeted. Honestly, at first we asked if it was open (looked really dead inside.. like really really empty). He had a snarky comment and we had to stop and glance at each other. The look of "do we leave?". We sat at the bar top, he tossed over some menus, took our order and was really not happiest. It ruined our mood, and our intention was to stay and enjoy a drink or some food. However the atmosphere wasn't welcoming, almost uncomfortable. We only stayed for one drink, and they're all $20 each. Trying to cocktails was nice. I definitely recommend heading to the other tiki bar in Long Beach - better crowd - better service - welcoming. I won't be back nor bringing a friend here unfortunately.

Before we get off track, let's get back to my opening line; when my life is in shambles, I come to V Room. It's fun, it has great music and things just don't feel as bad here. My last venture to ye olde V, my roommate broke up a fight in the girls room, my friends and I drunkenly sang along to Iggy Pop, and a hipster girl was hoisted out by the straps of her 90s era child's backpack. Eye rolls whenever anything was asked for. Went to pay & when the " tip" wasn't up to her par , she made the comment under her breath " why even **** come out cheap f**k?" Why even be a bartender if you're not going to provide a service. You don't get a tip for being terrible at your job. That's not how this works. Management will probably read this & brush it off because she'll have a lame excuse like we were the problem or needy. Nope. She is the problem. Even the regulars mentioned they can't stand when she bartends because her attitude is so terrible. Fix your system please. Get better people.

Our service was very slow and the drinks took a very long time to come out. We were some of the only people in the restaurant, so I can't blame it on being very busy. My girlfriend ordered a mojito and it tasted more like a margarita than anything. Our appetizer was okay but for the price you pay you don't get much. My burrito was decent, nothing to write home about. But you could definitely get a better one in Long Beach for $5 cheaper. My girlfriend ordered a salmon special which was about $30. I've never had a more overcooked piece of fish in my life. When the server asked how our food was I informed her the food was extremely overcooked. She didn't seem to care and there was no offer to find some kind of solution. I wasn't expecting a comped dish or anything special, but a little acknowledgement would have been appreciated. I wouldn't reccomend this place but if you're going to the club there and want food I guess this could be a decent option.

I got the Backyard BBQ burger with tater tots and the Bacon Bleu burger with fries.  Backyard BBQ burger - the onion rings at Sideburns are some of the best in the game, so this was obviously stellar. I thought it was awesome, but my friends definitely thought it was a little too much to handle. Definitely order if you love bleu cheese. It was perfectly balanced by the sweet strawberry jam and peppery arugula. If you're looking to cure your hangover before it even starts, head to the Stache. When I ordered " The Poutine " she thought I ordered the poutine fries so she let us keep the fries and ordered The Poutine Burger for me. Next time I'll make sure to say " burger " to respect their food costs and bottom line. But maybe we will just order the Poutine fries too because now we know how delicious they are as well.
