I've been going to Sky for my haircuts for more than 10 years now. Ever since he moved further away from me to this new location in San Gabriel, I started trying other places for my haircuts... only to find myself going back to Sky. He is always able to rescue my hair and fix the mistakes that result from me trying out other places (including a terrible bleaching experience that nearly turned me blonde). Whenever I make an appointment, I have absolute trust in Sky and give him full control of how to style my hair. I rarely give any input and I always love the outcome. I have extremely curly hair and he was the only one who could style it in a way that made me sooo pleased with the way my hair turned out. This post is long overdue.. I've just finally recovered from the trauma this experience has put me (&my hair) through. I came here in Oct. 2018 to get my hair balayage. I wanted a natural look, nothing crazy like platinum blond. I was so excited because I only heard good things about this studio. I went in around 9 A.M.. and did not leave till around 10-11 P.M. If I'm spending that much $ and time sitting endlessly at the hair salon, it should be what I asked for. They bleached my hair and put me under the air Dyer for around two hours. I understand Asians have stubborn hair, but as someone who works in the industry, you should know the limits and how long someone hair can endure the air dryer and bleach for. When Sky was toning and combing out my hair, I could feel my hair breaking (& my heart breaking). My head was hot and my scalp was as dry as the Sahara desert. My hair is literally still the same color, I sat through all that pain for no change and silly string hair. It would hurt and be so tangled as he combined through my hair. My hair from top to bottom is insanely damaged, thinned, and now I'm almost bald. To this day it's still damaged and I hope nobody experience this like me. read more

He is very prompt when responding to appointments and is really friendly/ talkative when working on your hair. I've gone to him for a haircut and balayage and both times the prices were very reasonable. He is talented and honest; as long as you communicate with him on what you want, he can make it happen. When working on your hair, he'll try his best to give you his recommendations on what procedure would damage your hair as least as possible. My friend recommended Sky to me so I gave it a try :) Made an appointment like a week ago. Our appointment was scheduled at 3:30pm and sky was still helping the other customer so I sat there and read some magazines. I think it was 4pm when it's my term but it's okay since i was not in a hurry or anything. Both my boyfriend and I had a haircut and we both love it!! Sky doesn't just cut and trim your hair. He paid attention to every details which is good. I also had my hair dyed and it looks good!! I've been getting regular haircuts at Unique Hair Salon ever since I moved to Greater LA, and I've never considered switching unless I move away. Sky is an amazing hair artist who you can always count on to deliver satisfactory results, to say the least. Never once have I felt upset about my new haircut, which is exceptional considering how obsessed I am with my hair. One thing though: I wish they could use air conditioning more at the salon. I'm prone to sweating, and sometimes it can feel so hot during the process that I begin to sweat. This is my second review--- I have very thick straight hair. I was really tired of the time consuming process of using a curling iron or having to roll up my hair just to get a little body and volume before I could get out the door. Having had some traumatic disappointments with body waves and perms, I was super pleased to have a wonderful perm done by Sky. He has an amazing artistic sensibility when it comes to any sort of hair treatment. I've had colorings, hi-lights and cuts by him - all expertly done and with practical daily low-maintenance results. Anyway, the perm I had was, I think, a Japanese cold wave technique and just gave me natural shaping and a wonderful soft feel. My big priority is making sure everything looks NATURAL and I wasn't disappointed. I gave Sky a picture of what I wanted and as usual he gave me a high tech cut that's swingy and young and classy -and on top of that I got this great perm that looked totally natural and un-permed with soft volume and body!!! Having lived on the west side, I've had stylists that run the gamut of quality and ego-mania so I am more than happy to pay $45 for a precision cut from a master hair stylist that's a snap to take care of--I can't remember what I paid for the perm but even though I had to drive more than an hour, it was so worth it! FYI- He has tons of experience for a young guy - and a pretty impressive resume of styling awards under his belt, ie. NAHA ...last time I had to make my appointment several days in advance because of a styling competition in Chicago. read more

I just had another amazing haircut/color with Sky. My hair feels light and flowy and has a vibrant low maintenance hair color. When coloring my hair, I'm weary of having to constantly maintain it, so I requested for a low maintenance color, which he delivered. Even after a few months I have people asked if I just highlighted my hair! He looks relatively young, but has amazing talents. He does a lot of hair shows so I always try to book 2 wks in advance. I live almost an hour away, but still make it down to get my hair done with him. I'm glad to have found such a great stylist with reasonable prices. I've been going to Sky for about 5 years now and there has to be some good reasons why I'm willing to go to him for this long instead of so many other hairstylists in L.A. No doubt, Sky is really talented and skilled at hairstyling. I've done all my haircuts and hair dying with him, and he has never disappointed me. Unlike some other hairstylists, he puts lots of effort and attention into every hairstyling he does, even just a touch on the bangs. I am personally very sensitive to my bangs and Sky always managed to get the shape and look I specifically ask for. He's also great at touching upon the roots that it's so natural, it's impossible to see the difference in color. Lastly, I want to clarify a few things I read from other reviews bc I felt unfair for Sky. Yes, it is true that Sky isn't the most punctual person in the world. However, he's also a human being after all. Accidents happen all the time but more importantly is his attitude after being late, he always apologizes and never complains when customers are late. (I'm not saying that it's right to be late but it's not like he's late all the time.) Also, the price "your friend" gets doesn't necessarily mean that you will get that same price. The reason to this is bc Sky has many valued customers who had been continuously going to him for many years and he doesn't want to charge them extra although prices has been raising over the years (which is fairly reasonable). Overall, you pay for the quality you get and I can assure you that it's worth it. read more

Review update: I actually forgot about coming back to try this place until my friend reminded me. I decided on a cut and some color work. Sky spent time talking about what I wanted and was so patient explaining how to get that look. What I wanted was a very very natural color lol. Strangely I think that's one of the hardest looks to get right! Anyway he went to work and I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure if he understood HOW natural I wanted it. In the end it was perfect. Cut was more of a trim but it was a really good trim. Usually after the salon I don't like my hair, I'd have to fix it to my style more. This is the first time I left my hair as is and went out. ***UPDATE Since I yelp on my phone it doesn't get published until I log on from the computer. Anyway it's been months since my cut and I love it still. It's kind of amazing how sky understands hair. And he does the cut, color, shampoo by himself which is kind of nice. Unique Hair Salon is the one place to go if you want "red carpet" look (at least from the neck up) without the annoyance of paparazzi. Let's face it; we're not all super stars. If you ever look at a gorgeous picture of a model or a really cool shot of a character from a movie and say to yourself "that's got to be photoshopped" or "it's definitely CG", well do yourself a favor and drive down to San Gabriel where Unique Hair Salon is located, go in and ask for Sky, the head stylist and owner of joint, let him work on you for about half an hour, look into the mirror, wave and say "hi mom, I'm on TV!" That's the kind of reaction people get after having their hair fixed in Unique Hair Salon, and no they're not on drugs. I'm a guy who used to think haircuts are obligations, something I wish I could do without. But then after just one visit to the place I've totally changed my mind about this now enjoyable and often exciting recreational activity. I basically imagine a look in my head and tell Sky exactly what it is (sometimes I'd bring a picture for reference), and he molds my thought into reality. It's that simple. I have really dark hair and you know how hard that is to color without landing some massive damage to my hair. But after a combination of colors and treatments, I got a head full of silky bright colored hair which I wore for a good three month in its original color without too much fading. That is skillz. Unique Hair Salon is a must go place if you want the positive attention you deserve. Most places that charge twice as much don't even do half of a good job. I have friends from the OC and Hollywood drive all the way to San Gabriel not for a haircut, not to color, just to have their hair set by Sky before a party and then drive all the way back. Called a few days in advanced not knowing how busy Sky is!! There was only one day out of the week my friend and I were available to go together (since she wanted to get our hair done together forever), and although he had mentioned he had to go to a meeting that day and didn't have time, he called me back later in the day making time for me which was really nice since I could've gone to any other place. My hair was 4 different colors, black roots, light brown, light golden brown, then blonde on the bottom. I asked for him to match the color to be the same as my extensions which was a shade or two lighter than the middle color on my hair. He applied to dye pretty quickly and let it sit about an hour or so, after washing it out my hair was pretty much one even color, the bottom was still a little light but I think there's no way to fix it unless I was willing to cut it off (which I wasn't). When I got home and put in the extensions, the color was a noticeably different but not a big deal since i have leftover darker dye. I'm usually pretty picky about cuts but he listened to what I wanted and also gave suggestions (which I was free to not take LOL) Was overall very happy with the haircut! $115 overall for cut and dye (and I feel so bad that after I left I realized that I accidentally only gave him $5 tip when I meant to give him $10 woops). He's pretty fluent in English so if you don't speak Chinese communication won't be a problem! Debbi, who cut for American Idol for the first couple of seasons, did the rest. I travelled 600 miles for the occasional cut-and-sun run throughout the years with Debbi Corum only.
