I was pretty excited to find a local shop since I also lived in Mission Viejo. They did a bunch of stuff to my 1965 vw bug and replacing my starter was one of the items I was charged for. My starter went out about a month after and when I called to ask for a warranty they told me it was never replaced and there was no warranty. It was an Auto Zone starter so it was lifetime warranty. They said to bring it in and they would remove the old and reinstall the new one for me which was nice. The starter had a sticker of 2017 on it so I know it hadn't been replaced. The mechanic there was very nice, it was the owner who wasn't the best at customer service. I just paid and parted ways. I now go to a shop in Huntington Beach called Maxed Performance. read more

Sorry quick fix shop This service is from 2 years ago & I"m still upset with the results They sent me away without working brake lights as requested .. I witnessed technicians that had little respect for my car and the one armed mechanic assigned to service my car DID drop whatever he had just unbolted to install my new exhaust system.. and my bus is still scraped up on the rear body * I wondered why the shop could'nt order from EMPI ... But I do have great credit & had to.. "Danny " ran out to greet me with the service order to sign before I saw the car.. it was parked with it's rear to the wall . I had to drive home with no back bumper ...Chip said it didn't clear (for the mechanic ) So at home I shimmed the bumper mount & had to finish the job And * My rear brake light was not fixed when I arrived to PU... First time customer, won't be my last time! So I walk in, and explain my problem, and Chip just says no problem, leave your keys and put you name an number on this notepad. Old school sometimes is JUST what the dr. ordered. Danny was great and helpful, and Chip is FULL of information. Danny seems to LOVE old VW's, while Chip treats them like a little brother... he LOVES them, but has information and can come off sounding negative about them. These guys fixed an on-going problem that 2 other mechanics did/could not resolve. Bring your air-cooled VW to these guys and leave with a job well done, and at a price that was fair and was what they said it would be. I guess on Wed evenings they do an 'open house' type thing with wine and food. I missed this one, but will keep an eye out in the future. I will be back as I trust them 100%. read more

I have been going to Unique for years and wouldn't trust just anyone other than Chip with my vehicles. He has a sharp wit which might put some people off, but he will always give it to you straight and charges a fair price. He has done a number of small favors in the past. I never have to wonder if he is doing unnecessary work or charging me too much. He mostly deals with VWs and BMWs, but I have been taking my Kia to him for about 5 years and he has always fixed it up right. Don't think I could find a better mechanic. read more

Chip is one of the rudest people I have ever come in contact with. Danny and Jesse are great, but I only delt with Chip because before my last visit, I thought they were fair and honest, as well as competent with VW busses. I took in my busses to Unique for about 5 years off and on. Here's the worst nightmare you could ever expect. I saw white smoke coming out the back of my 77 bus so I had it towed later to Unique. There was also engine oil which had squirted all over the right side of my engine compartment. I reluctantly told Chip about the smoke and oil. He walked out to the bus looked at it for about two minutes and said my rings were shot and needed $1,500 to $1,800 worth of engine rebuild. I figured I was simply at their mercy and didn't want to have my bus towed anywhere else so I agreed. Two days later Chip calls me back and says he doesn't want to work on my bus. "It's probably stolen," he tells me (it's not). So, he still charges me $160 for the "diagnostic." I asked him what the heck they even did cause I was upset. "Did you even test drive it?" I ask him. "You have oil on the bottom of your engine," he replies. All VW's leak oil, everyone knows that. So, now, I say to myself, "what the heck, I'll drive it home. If it blows , it blows." Guess what? NOTHING! No more white smoke. No leaks of oil. Turns out, my new mechanic finds out their was a missing hose and oil was spurting out which caused the white smoke and smell that I thought was a blown head gasket or ring. Total repair $140, which included an oil change, a new belt, etc. I'm so glad Chip was his usual insensitive self, cause it ended up saving me $1,800 and even worse, having to deal with paying him my hard earned money. Take your business elsewhere is my advice. They are so busy they're not "hungry" anymore for business. read more

First time I walked in here there was an older guy (mid 50's) that was ahead of me, as the owner Chip walked over to him the guy tossed his keys over to him and told him; tell me how much it is. Not too common you'll see something like that with a mechanic. Almost looked like a plant! Yet I've been going there for about a year and a half with three different cars because that guy knew what I didnt. Chip's prices are very good and he's honest. Shocker yes, but a mechanic I can trust. Chip told me the way he works is that he's only going to fix what you ask him to the first few times, he dosent tell you he needs to recalibrate your flux-capacitor so he can squeeze for you another $100. Once you are comfortable you'll stop asking and he'll keep fixing, yet time and time again he doesn't come back with some BS fix job. I've taken my car there a couple times where he would tell me not to worry about fixing X or Y at this time as it wont make a big different now come back later. He's shopped prices for parts to try to get a better deal for me as well. Chip is a smart $(@, but in a funny way - not a rude way. Personable guy but can also be quick and to the point. When I go now don't even need to worry about giving my name and info.. I just tell him what problems I'm hearing and my keys. An honest mechanic at a fair price. I was referred to this shop today. My Corolla was sounding really scary under the hood for the last couple of days. I met Chip and he said no problem, I'll look at it now. He immediately diagnosed my car needing a new water pump. He had his mechanic fix it immediately and charged me fairly. I was very happy and satisfied leaving there today! This place is awesome. I found this place because my father in law (who knows how to fix his own cars but lacks the time due to a busy work schedule) knows the owner. And my father in law's recommendation has been right-on. I have been in to see Chip 3 times now - he's been consistently honest, fair, and reasonable in prices. Just today, I went in with a check engine light on and he told me I only needed to tighten the gas cap - no money needed. It makes me so pleased that they will be honest with a young(ish) female who knows NOTHING about cars! When my car breaks for real, I will be happy to spend money here. Also - my 6 year old daughter fully enjoys all of the reptiles. While we waited, she got to walk a turtle and even pet the iguanas! All of the reptiles are friendly, and it's an awesome to keep the kiddos occupied while your car is being serviced. I have been going to Unique Imports to service both my 1969 VW Single Cab Truck and 2013 Porsche 911 for the past two years. There are not many auto repair places that can take care of both of these two (different) vehicles. I used to take my pickup to Mesa West in Costa Mesa. They couldn't fix something after four times in the shop, so I took it to Unique. What a vast difference and great service Unique offers. It seems I'm the unfortunate one who didn't have the best experience. And as a reader, you'll probably ignore this review, since I'm the odd man out so far. I know, cause that's what I do too. But this was my experience, so, take this for what it's worth... Chip is not the most personable character, but I can totally deal with that. The iguana in the lobby makes up for it. I had brought my vehicle to him once or twice before, accepting his, uh, "charm," and the repairs were completed without any issue and price was fair. However, the last time I took my car in, he ended up charging about $100 more than he quoted, because of the difficulty of the procedure on my particular model of vehicle. When he gave me the quote, I was sure to state exactly which model I had. But, I sucked it up, knowing that it was still a fair price. But, when I got my car back, I was immediately having problems with the repair work. I took the car back the next day, and he kindly went out to my car right then for a cursory check, telling me it wasn't the repair work that was the problem, but that it was XYZ and that I should check/replace XYZ. I replied that XYZ is fairly new and, indeed when he tested it, it was good. But, he continued to tell me that XYZ is still most likely the problem and I should replace it. OK. So, I leave, buy a new XYZ, install it and problems was still there. In sum, I took the car back a few times, sometimes leaving it for the day, only to find out he "never got to it." After my third visit to resolve the issue, and realizing I was getting nowhere and wasting a lot of my time, I chose cut my losses. I finally fixed it myself, removing the defective part, sending it in to the manufacturer for a warranty replacement, and re-installing the new one myself. So, it was simply a defective part, and Chip was either unable or unwilling to diagnose and resolve it. While I do believe he's a competent mechanic, it only takes one instance of poor customer service or failing to stand behind the work to lose someone as a customer. Bummer, because I like his wacky terrarium and airplane seats. read more

I have been coming here for years and this review is long over due! The location is perfect for me, the rates are always competitive and the people are all amazing. They have worked on all types of cars/trucks. Chip, Danny and the whole staff are very upfront and honest. I have brought other cars here but I have an older Ford F-150 that is still running around town because of Unique. I have read some reviews about some people not liking their sense of humor but I always appreciate it to take the edge off when you're having car problems.
