My experience was from 2010. But I finally created an yelp account to be able to write a review. I needed to repair/rebuild a brick chimney from shoulder up. They were prompt and handled all the permit paper work (expensive though, but I wanted the job done ASAP). The contract including tearing down the chimney from half way and rebuilding it up and cleaned up, etc. They finished the job promptly, but left me with an unfinished chimney exterior wall (inside the house) and opened up ceiling yet to be covered/finished. To me, this was an unfinished contract. They argued that these parts were not included in the contract and asked for more money to finish the job. I got fed up and hire another handyman to finish the left over work. read more

These guys weren't on Yelp, and I'm creating a listing for them because they were so good. They came out to my house to drill some holes through a rock fireplace to mount a flatscreen TV. They were on time, reasonably priced, very pleasant, cleaned up everything afterward, and even offered valuable additional insight on other potential issues they discovered with my chimney while working on the mounting. We have an old (1916) house with a chimney that needed a lot of work. Tony, Bobby and Andy rebuilt our cracked firebox, added a new damper and a new raincap. On top of all this they cleaned the chimney and removed some ash/smoke stains on the decorative elements surrounding it. Throughout all of this they were prompt, communicative over phone and email, polite, and really helpful by showing us how to operate our fireplace safely. At the end of the job they went above and beyond with the clean up. They had walked over the porch a few times when coming and going, so they washed the entire thing! So, after our contractor removed the old brick structure, Tony & crew from United Chimney came in to put in a new flue. If you need any chimney work, these guys are the best! Called around today to get prices, not only were they they cheapest, but they were also able to come the day I called! They were super clean and very quick. I even got on my roof to check out what they were doing (I am sure that is not the norm) and while I was up there Tony helped me fix an exhaust crown on my roof, which had nothing to do with the chimney. United Chimney Service just finished relining my 60 year old chimney after a chimney fire. The bid that Tony submitted gave the costs broken down, so that I had the option of selecting those services that I could afford now with the option of having other work done at a later time. No pressure. I opted to have the chimney relined, the smoke chamber recoated, a new damper installed and he firebox rebuilt. The prices quoted were very competitive. Tony and his smart and personable assistant / co-worker Eric did a great job protecting the interior of my home from dirt and damage and left everything just as they found it. Tony is an excellent mason. I almost don't want to light a fire in the beautiful firebox he built. As in every reconstruction job, one never knows what will be found until the job is actually opened up, When the chimney crown (the top) was opened it was found that replacing the cracked terra cotta liner tile (as quoted) was impossible due to space limitations. After discussion, Tony fabricated a stainless steel liner to replace the removed terra cotta tiles and maintain existing flue dimensions so as not to affect the draw of the fireplace. They insulated around the stainless liner following best industry standards and hid the exposed liner at the top of the chimney with terra cotta tile all for the originally quoted price. It looks great from all angles. I would not hesitate to have Tony and Eric come in to my home with no one there. I feel they are honest, honorable guys. read more

I just bought a house on the coast in Pacifica, the chimney damper was rusted to pieces, and I needed a new chimney cap. I called them out for a chimney cleanng, inspection, and to get an estimate to do all the work for me. T.J. came out for the cleaning, and he gave me a very fair price to replace the damper and chimney cap. The very next day they came out and fixed everything for me within two hours. They did an excellent job fabricating and installing a new custom cut lower damper (its beautiful and a very heavy guage, just what I wanted). Our chimney had not been cleaned in nearly 10 years and started smoking recently so we stopped using it and knew we needed to get it serviced before we continue using it. I called on Dec. 30th, late in the afternoon hoping to make an appointment right away. Someone answered my call - no machine, no waiting, just a real nice woman who answered my questions and scheduled my appointment. Andy showed up right on time of our scheduled appointment a few days later. He was very professional and patient. We have a light colored rug in the living room so I really appreciated the fact that he laid down a large tarp to protect the rug. Andy was very diligent and answered all of my questions while he worked. I called to make an appointment for an estimate to put in a wood burning insert. I called about 10 minutes before my appointment just to make sure i had the date right. The receptionist apologized and said he would be about 15-20 minutes late...he was an hour late with no call! When the man came to my house, he never said his name. When he looked into my fireplace his hairy butt crack was practically in my face, not just a little, pull up your pants dude. He was very insistent about putting in gas logs but i finally had to say, hey you are here for an estimate for an insert, thats all i want. He then went on the roof. After that he sat in his car for about 15 minutes on the phone, I had thought he just left without saying anything. He took down my email and said i would have an estimate in about 20 minutes. Well im glad i didnt have to pay for that appointment!!! It has been a week and still no estimate! I just called the office and when i said i had a complaint the receptionist hung up on me! I called back twice and she picked up the phone and hung it up without saying anything. She finally answered the third time and she couldnt care less about my issue, she just wanted to get off the phone with me. I will definitely not be using this company to install my insert!! We searched near Los Gatos to find a company that would put a nice chimney cap on our old structure to dress the place up. After a lot of searching we found United Chimney in Atherton. To our surprise they were happy to come to Los Gatos. They came out the same day, did the estimate and once we approved, began the design. A week and a half later the new chimney is on and it looks great. It really completes our house. This company was excellent on a lot of levels. It is a family operation with a father and son and a very helpful and professional staff supporting them. The Dad, Tony, is an experienced mason, and thus they provide more than just basic chimney services. Their response time was impressive and their commitment as to the timeline to complete our job was spot on. We had a very old (100 years) and unused fireplace in our kitchen. They rebuilt the firebox with new brick, repaired the damper, replaced the chimney cap, and most importantly put in a chimney liner, since the old fireplace had exposed brick only. Additionally, they cleaned our other two fireplaces with no dust, dirt, or debris escaping anywhere. They came out and spent about 3 hours at our house fixing the damper (with a crew of three people), putting in even better blots to hold it in place, etc etc. They didn't charge us a dime! Our fireplace needed several repairs (new back wall, damper, ash dump door, high temp mortar to fill-in damaged sections, potential issues with original construction using combustible materials, etc.) and we were also interested in updating the facade and hearth. Each morning the team arrived promptly to begin their work, they took the necessary measures to ensure our hardwood floors were not damaged and protect our home from the dust and soot. Throughout the project Tony consulted with us as new issues were uncovered and looped us in for design decisions. Great service at a reasonable price. The owner, Tony, has been in business for a long time and was recommended by another contractor who started my job but could not complete it. Tony has trained most of the other local chimney sweeps. He rebuilt my firewall and smoke shelf and chimney floor, and re-installed my custom damper. He uses floor-to-ceiling curtains so there was no dust anywhere. He put a protective coating over my chimney cap, but it rained that night so the coating was ruined. He re-did it as soon as the weather cleared up. I waited a year to post this to be sure the repairs held up, and there have been no problems. I highly recommend United Chimney Service. read more

I knew my chimney had not been cleaned for years so I looked in the Yellow Pages, dialed United Chimney and the phone was answered on about the second ring. Two men came and cleaned it beautifully and noticed the inside was dangerously cracked (big fire hazard!). So, I made an appointment to have the whole fireplace rebuilt. I was very nervous about the mess, the noise and the disruption. Ha! No mess, no noise and no disruption, Tony and his sons moved the furniture and books out of the way, tented in the area from ceiling to floor, and in 2 days I had a safe gorgeous new fireplace of lovely golden brick. No noise and not a drop of dust anywhere in the house! Best of all, the three men were absolutely lovely. Tony is exceptionally dear, trustworthy, expert, able and a very gracious man who runs his family business the old fashioned way; personally and with sincere warmth.
