I took my son to move into his "off-campus" housing at University Gateway. What started out as what, for all intents and purposes should (would) have been a disastrous outcome due to an unknown/unforeseen situation, turned into the best outcome and resolution due solely to the above and beyond efforts of Mr. Gavin Graham, General Manager Sales & Marketing. University Gateway has the following verbiage on their employee business cards, "People Matter Most, Do The Right Thing, Create Moments, Own It and Evolve." I'm not sure if this is a company motto or a description of Mr. Graham! From the few employees that I met, it is clear that the employees reflect management. I am beyond excited that my son will be housed in a building with such professional and caring individuals. read more

DO NOT lease here unless you want constant problems and zero accountability. * Move-in day: Carpets were soaked, and the entire apartment smelled like mildew. * In the first week of living there, I discovered that almost all the hinges on the kitchen cabinets were broken. My bedroom door wouldn't even close all the way and had to be completely replaced. Shockingly, that specific repair was done fairly fast-especially compared to how long everything else took. * Garage transponder didn't work in the middle of the day while I was trying to exit. My phone was dead, and the only way to contact staff was by text. The security guard accused me of lying, harassed me, and refused to help until I went into the building and asked someone in person. This happened more than once. * Trash is consistently mismanaged. During holidays and move-out weeks, the trash room overflows and the door won't open. Management ignores it but threatens to fine residents for "littering." What are we supposed to do? * Internet is unreliable. It works less than half the time. For a college apartment complex, that's inexcusable. * Maintenance is careless. During one of their "renovation" projects, they left my apartment door wide open for five hours with no notice. * Building security is a joke. The gate to my floor was almost always left open. Security gave excuses and never followed through on fixing it. * Elevators are gross and broken. The one near my unit was constantly out of service or had puke in it. The main elevators rarely worked at the same time. * Packages frequently go missing and magically show up only after filing complaints. * Management is useless. They don't respond to issues unless a parent calls-even if you're a 23-year-old adult. Repairs take weeks. * Move-out was just as bad. After everything, I just wanted to leave peacefully. But I still have yet to receive my security deposit check back. I have to chase it down, and it turned into a whole mess of calls and back-and-forth to get money I am rightfully owed. I would have gladly posted this review sooner, but I genuinely feared management would retaliate and make my experience even worse. That's the kind of environment this place creates. I waited until I was completely out and fully detached from the lease before saying anything publicly-and that alone says a lot. The only thing this place has going for it is the location. But honestly, so do a dozen other properties that don't make daily life feel like a fight. Avoid this building if you value your time, your money, or your sanity. read more

Lived here for a while and really do not recommend. CONS: 1. The washing machines barely work. When you drag ur laundry bag all the way to another floor, chances are they still don't work lol. 2. The signal is really bad sometimes. I'm not talking about bad wifi, I'm talking about no bars no signal at all. 3. I did not feel safe coming home at night. The apartment is directly facing the road. So when you come home at night, you will have to take out the apartment key card and scan it by the ROAD. 4. This is my second year at Gateway. Last year, I didn't mind living here. However, this year has been a total switch up. For some reason, the lobby will randomly smell like eggs. It comes in waves, and it's random and unpredictable. Additionally, the elevators have been broken for damn near a month. The two elevators I mainly use have been out of service from before Thanksgiving break to winter break. I haven't even seen anyone working on them. They sent us an email that sounded like they blamed the residents for not reporting it. I remember the first time I checked in to get my keys and everything, one of the employees was giving me some crazy attitude. Usually, I don't mind it when someone laughs at me for saying something silly, but this person was actually trying to make me look dumb. I don't know if it's just their personality, but it was actually OD. I don't wanna sound soft, but you gotta know when you're doing too much. I do appreciate the fact that Gateway has parking on every floor. It's been convenient when it comes to loading and offloading my baggage. However, I don't appreciate the fact that the transponder picks when it wants to work. Maybe mine is just bugged, but I have had to get it checked with security multiple times. Also, it's crazy how management is okay with the bottom floor of the parking structure just smelling like straight garbage. I understand that it's where the dumpster is located, but you shouldn't be okay with the dumpsters sitting out there for multiple days just getting mustier. I enjoyed my time at Gateway last year, but something switched this year. I used to recommend living here to people who were newly admitted, but recently I've been telling them to reconsider their options. I'm sad to see Gateway's downfall, but hopefully they see these reviews and realize that they gotta make some changes. read more

Nonstop super loud construction starting at early hours of the morning in the room next to me with no warning. Trash is still lingering since move out, sticky floors and awful odor. I had to be transferred to another unit during construction and the new unit is of lesser quality and faces a main road, despite paying the 7th floor premium. I really really wanted to like it here and am appreciative of how hard many of the staff members work but I would not in my good nature be able to recommend living here to anyone. especially if you stay during the summer. I'd give 0 stars if I could. Total rip-off and dank place to live. Half the elevators are broken all the time and they take their sweet time in getting them fixed. My transponder to the inner parking gate never works. Meanwhile the outer parking gate breaks all the time and doesn't work, leaving you trapped in the parking garage. Once I had to get to urgent care because I had flu and high fever. But the gate wouldn't open. I tried calling, but no one answered the phone, and finally I touched the gate and tried to lift it manually. The security guards, who should have helped me instead ran up to me and started yelling and harassing me. Later I was charged for the broke gate even though it's the apartment's fault and security's fault for choosing to ignore my calls and yell at and blame me instead. Now I'm 600 dollars in debt. Meanwhile you can almost never get a good night's sleep because the fire alarm is going off every other night. It goes off so much no one even evacuates anymore because it's always a false alarm. I've tried talking to the landlord and workers but they don't care at all. The rent is way too expensive for such a dangerous part of Los Angeles! I have no complaints. The place is clean. The public areas are disinfected. The lobby is bright and beautiful. I feel very happy here. The colors add energy and vibe. I have been a resident at Gateway since 2019 and have lived both in the penthouse and on the 6th floor! Overall I really enjoyed my time at Gateway. I think it was the perfect apartment to live in as a sophomore and junior. I really liked how close I was to the village and other great restaurants. It's less than a 10 min walk to the village down 32nd st and it's super safe since it's lined with DPS. But besides the location, I had a really smooth move-in when I first arrived and even when I had to do a room transfer, they were extremely accommodating to my circumstances and understanding. During the pandemic, they were even more accommodating with me in terms of how I chose to pay rent and when I brought in someone to sublease my spot. Especially after building a good rapport with some of the staff, it made these transactions a lot easier :) I know some people have complained about maintenance but I have always had a great experience with them. They come with masks and within 48 hours. Although they may come at unpredictable times, they're usually mindful if I happen to be on a call or with someone else. I think my biggest complaint would be the fire alarms. I remember there being a couple times where I wasn't alerted of a testing and the fire alarm went at night or in the morning. It got better as the semester went on but that's something to be aware of. Additionally there were some issues with residents in terms if disruptive guests and a break-in. These two incidents were alarming but were also dealt with accordingly. I would also be aware of the washers/dryers. They work fine for normal loads but if you have any delicate clothes or nice coats, I would take it to a dry cleaner because the washers/dryers are not the best in that regard. Other than that, I think Gateway is a great place to live especially your sophomore or junior year at USC! It was fun getting to live near so many friends but also feel more independent from living in a dorm. read more

I'm not quite sure where to begin when writing about the myriad issues with University Gateway housing. First-- if you need a sign for a reason to not live here and choose somewhere else, this is it. From the day I moved in in August of 2018, the air conditioning unit above my closet was leaking. My roommate and I retrieved a small glass bucket to catch the water while we filed a work order. Little did we know, the leaking air conditioning would be a problem for the duration of our lease and would impact me and my belongings. From August on, I filed many, many work orders and each time, the Gateway staff would claim that the air conditioning unit was "fixed." As you can guess, the unit was never actually fixed and would continue to leak from different parts of the unit, resulting in a wet carpet and my inability to open my closet as my closet was the one directly below the air conditioning. It was only months later when my father intervened and that my belongings became damaged that the ignorant staff took slight notice of the problem. However, don't begin to think that things became resolved from here. In November, I alerted the staff via email after filing probably over 20 service requests that the vent was still leaking, that there was clearly mold on my belongings, and a soaked floor barring my access to my closet. When I returned from Thanksgiving break, I came back to a mold damaged pair of expensive shoes and an equally moldy laundry bag. Even when I asked them to take Winter break to have professional carpet cleaners and a professional come to clean the vent, they did not take this opportunity to resolve their wrongdoings. Imagine dealing with all of this while trying to do well in school- thanks a lot Gateway. Oh! And when a new piece of my belongings, a jacket, showed clear air conditioning leak related residue on it, the Gateway staff tried to tell me that it was unrelated to the mold on my laundry bag and $300 pair of shoes. Interesting, considering that I had worn it two days prior, put it back in my closet, and went to wear it and found it ruined. In true Gateway fashion, they used the difference in how the mold residue/air conditioning damage looked to justify only compensating me for one damaged item. And by the way, they clearly don't know how to convert Euros and gave me half of the money due for my shoes. Nice. The Gateway staff claimed that, given that they allegedly "fixed the A/C multiple times and cleaned the carpets" and that because "the residue on the shoes does not quite match with the residue on the jacket," they could not compensate me for the jacket... Even when I cited The California Housing Code, indicating their culpability in the matter, they outright ignored my email. In terms of compensation for the various damages incurred while living at Gateway, both in terms of material items damaged and the mold threat to my health, it was more a matter of principle than anything for me. University Gateway could not take the proper responsibility for its negligence. Given that I was stuck living in a crap hole for the rest of the semester, I purchased a clothing rack and emptied the closet of my belongings in order to protect my items from the leaky vent and burrowing mold. Please see attached photos for context and to realize you should run far away from living at University Gateway. I have contacted the Los Angeles Department of Public Health and look forward to seeing justice served. *P.S.* A. Not to mention the constantly going off fire alarms (we're talking 3am, 5am, etc.) B. The fact that my roommate and I never had warm shower water for the entire year we lived at Gateway despite filing (you guessed it) many service requests. C. I signed a lease this year with gateway for the first time, and have been currently living here for over s month, and already encountered several problems: The postives(+) 1. Gateway host nice fee events for the residents to have free food, such as wings, coffee. 2. The amenities are pretty useful here. The gym is not the biggest, but every machine is fairly new and clean. 3. As a student it's REALLY NICE that gateway does provide free printing. However, you need to plan on the timing of WHEN you print. At night, it's the printer either runs our of paper or ink. 4. The workers are nice, and help you out. I signed up for service for carpet cleaning and air vent cleansing, and the workers came within one week's wait. Negatives (-) 1. Phone service is very weak. I don't know if it was my apartment room particularity, but my reception is terrible. I have to either FaceTime call people, using the wifi. 2. THEY do NOT CLEAN HALLWAYS. The hallways are always left with random things like mattresses and food bags. The hallways floor are sometimes sticky and gross from parties that happen the night before AND LASTLY, 3. THEY DO NOT TAKE OUT TRASH IN TIME. My room is near the trash room, and I literally need to rush into my room to avoid the disgusting odor from the trash room. Gateway is the worst apartment plz if you are still struggling between Lorenzo and Gateway trust me... You know what is the difference? It is Sunday to day and NOBODY is working at Gateway. Some stupid triggered the fire alarm and it keeps sparkling and broadcasting warning info FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT!!!! And yes, you can find nobody and call is transferred to voice box. My eyes are nearly blind. Yes it is Sunday but whole apartment no manager no staff. Good for you The manager said we should go out of the building when we see the alarm. And yes we went out the campus, FOR AN HOUR. And the sparking lasts for SEVEN HOURS. When we finally reach to the security who had been out for the entire afternoon, I told him it had been sparkling for 7 hours, he laughed and asked: Really? hahaha! Like something really funny. And it happens today. May 15th. It happens again just 2 days after that. I have nothing to say and I am moving out. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Unbelievable. The University shuts down due to COVID19. Gives us updates regularly. Yet we hear NOTHING from Gateway. Not one email. No plans for health measures if you still live there. No plans for leases if you don't (most have left). Nothing. Zip. Nada. Terrible management. This is not "University" housing at all. It's just opportunistic landlords without any care whatsoever for their very young student residents. What company on earth is not communicating with their customers on a regular basis during this unprecedented health crisis, let alone a company under whose care and safety we have entrusted our children. Gateway schedule leases around semesters. They call themselves University. They market themselves using the colors of the University. Yet they actually have nothing to do with the University. They are just palming themselves off to the public as related to the fine USC institution. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. If you're a student looking for housing, look anywhere else! 1) In mid August, the very first week of move in, a pipe broke from the floor above and water leaked through the floor into my apartment. It took them weeks to fix the problem. They cut a hole in my suite-mates shower as part of the solution. Then it took them days to patch the hole up. The hole was covered in plaster and was not painted over until the end of January. The whole process shouldn't have taken months to fix. 2) Don't plan on using their printer. It never works. I have had to fix the printer myself. When mentioned to the staff, they just shrug their shoulders and do nothing to help. 3) The mail room is so unbelievably organized, it's crazy. A package may have arrived for you, but it takes them days to finally have it sorted. When getting a package you have to wait forever in line because the staff do not know how to do their job. They are always talking amongst each other about random things and will rarely acknowledge you. It should not take more than 6 minutes to find a package. 4) Overall, the staff and management are horrible. As mentioned, they take forever to do anything. Most of all they are all very rude. Specifically Charm, who needs to be fired and learn utter human decency. 5) The lighting is the apartment is horrendous and dark. It really is depressing. Dear future USC student considering Gateway- Don't. You deserve better, and there are many cheaper, cleaner, friendlier options out there. Check out the apartments on the north side of campus. I can't believe I paid over $2000/month to live here in a single bedroom with: 0 light (literally, there is no lighting installed anywhere), and 0 security (the front desk security guard was rarely there. One evening, I almost got assaulted in the lobby by a homeless and clearly unstable man who wandered in). I'm paying less than half of that rent rate now at my current housing situation. Don't let the good location fool you. You deserve better. As a side note, I hope the leasing manager James Jones doesn't still work here. To this day, I've still never met someone who gets off THAT much from being a condescending bully to 18-19 year olds. read more

I could forgive the water pressure of the showers, which hardly get you wet at all (imagine bathing in very light rainfall), if everything about these apartments didn't make you feel filthy and in dire need of actual bathing. Right at move-in, you will notice the ecosystem of insect life that has found its home here at Gateway, from the roaches skittering across the floors, the flies buzzing in your ears, and the entire colony of ants that appears to have set up shop in every apartment's kitchen. This isn't a unique scenario- literally everyone I've spoken to has a massive, unaddressed ant problem. The ants are your obnoxious roommates now- they don't pay rent, but they happily eat all the food in your fridge. At least they haven't touched my handle of Gran Legacy, as you will absolutely need cheap, hard liquor to survive a day in this hellhole. The insect problem makes sense once you see how the trash is handled here. The garbage chute overflowed on day two, and in the following weeks the refuse room has simply grown until it spilled out into the hallway. The administration here doesn't appear to care that soon an advanced lifeform will emerge from this primordial ooze. Real talk though, everyone in the building has the reek of rotten eggs permanently carved into their nasal cavities. This is atrocious. Please, please don't move in here unless you are close relatives of Oscar the Grouch. You're paying an awful lot of money for an awful lot of (literal and figurative) garbage. USC housing should be preferable to anyone wanting to be close to campus, and a lot of cheap options for housing also exist a couple streets away. I may sound like I'm being sarcastic. I am not. So let's talk about Gateway... First of all, I will preface this review with the statement that I actually had a pretty enjoyable experience living here (I'd maybe give it 2.5 stars if I could) My roommates and I had minimal issues, and the ones that we did have (while frustrating) were typically resolved. The perks of living here are the location, free food and events, and, again, the location. Being close to campus is super important, and I highly valued Gateway for that. The staff: My overall comment would be "meh". First of all, I would like to say that their staff may change from when I lived here (2017-2018 school year), but they aren't all bad. I would like to recognize Shannyn for being the most kind and helpful person that I worked with at Gateway. Additionally, most of their student workers in the mailroom were helpful too. I did have one bad experience while moving out. I was told that the staff would validate my parking if I was moving out, and I was doing some of this in June in preparation for moving out in July. Well one staff member got particularly feisty with me and refused to validate this ticket because I wasn't fully moving out of my apartment yet and my parents weren't there. Like what? I'm an adult. The rest of the staff was okay, didn't really interact with them much. Work orders: They will take awhile to complete, but most of them got done. We did have a clogged sink that was literally overflowing onto the kitchen floor unless the garbage disposal was on, called emergency maintenance, and were told that it wasn't an emergency.... okay? Move in/out: Move in was fine. Our apartment was in decent condition and was on the far side of the building, THANK GOD because the main courtyard is loud as hell. Though my one comment would be that they DO NOT clean the rooms properly before move in and then expect you to have it immaculate when you move out. My roommates and I got our full deposits back because we spent a long time cleaning, but the dichotomy of it all is ridiculous. Another comment would be that our good friends lived in another apartment here and there was literal food left in their cabinets and fridge from the previous tenants. Additional comments: Trash room is awful. I wouldn't say Gateway is entirely to blame though. There are times when the shoots aren't even clogged and people just throw their trash into the rooms because they're lazy. Main courtyard is typically a disaster on the weekends and even some, if not most, weekdays. If somehow you can request being high up on the west side of the building, do it. We paid the extra $15 or whatever it is a month to be on one of the upper floors (not the "penthouse" lol). Would I live at Gateway again? Maybe not. Would I take it back? Probably not. I have been a resident at Gateway my entire time at USC. I like how close it is to campus since I work early in the morning and gives me the ability to take a midday hiatus to sleep, catch-up on schoolwork, or cook something quick. I have had little issues with maintenance during my time here and I think it is a great option for students looking for a shared space. When I did have problems with getting internet in a new unit, the manager Charm was extremely helpful and responsive to work with me and the provider to get the issues resolved. Charm is the go to person to address any issues or concerns as they try to find a solution for a good experience living there. A quick email or call and Charm will get the job done. Overall, my stay at Gateway has been the best option for it being so close to campus and more affordable than other student housing options. read more

BEDBUGS IN MY BED FOR 2+ WEEKS...! During the check-in process, I got pulled out of the line and was told by an employee that my room wasn't ready yet for me to move-in, and they were currently in the process of cleaning it. Eh, that's fine, I was in a time crunch to drop off a friend in San Diego, so I left and returned the day after. After finally getting the key to my room, I unloaded everything from my car, and noticed that the bed frame was rotated 180 degrees. After turning it, I opened the drawers under my bed to store my clothes, and I was greeted to small/curly black hairs scattered in all four drawers, in addition to a condom wrapper. Uh, what exactly were they cleaning? Cause they definitely weren't cleaning the drawers. After going to sleep that first night, I awoke to find red bumps on my arms, very irritated and extremely itchy. It continued for a week or so, and sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night because of the skin irritation. Came up with several theories for it, until my bedbug theory was proven true when I awoke at 2AM to find four fucking bedbugs crawling all over my body. My roommate in the other room also mentioned finding bugs and getting bites on him. Yeah, at that point, I started sleeping on the armchair or in my car. I mean, it sucks that I have to pay $1000+ to sleep on a bedbug infested mattress, but at least I'm only paying $100+ to sleep in my car! I didn't see any staff that I could talk to during the first week or so due to them checking people in, but I was finally able to talk to an employee who was able to begin the long process of exterminating the bed bugs. The day after, the Orkin Exterminator came for the first time, but apparently he did not evaluate my bed due to clothes all over my bed (due to the drawers being hairy) and boxes surrounding the bed, my bad I guess. The second time, I guess he prepped the room, and left a note telling me to soak my clothes in hot water, and then wash them. Third time, he finally gassed the room. It took roughly a week for the bedbug situation to be remedied after I reported it to management. Aside from the bedbugs, there's been other nicks too. When I tried using the printer in the computer lounge, I was unable to print from the available computers along with the other students trying to print. Luckily, I wasn't printing anything important and wasn't in a time crunch, but imagine having to print an essay which is due at the beginning of class and having an unreliable printer. Also, after I soaked my clothes in hot water, I washed them, but I made the mistake of using a broken dryer. The drying machine proceeded to burn a hole in my polo shirt and in a pair of boxers. Finally, I don't think the management assigned me to a room based upon my roommate profile, but meh, that's the least of my issues at this point. But seriously, what the fuck is this shit? I used to work at a hotel, which I assume is somewhat similar to working at an apartment complex, and I know that this is not acceptable in any way. After reporting the situation to staff, I wasn't offered a new mattress or an alternative/temporary living space during the week it took them to take care of it. COLD SHOWER WATER in January, February, March, and April of 2022. I have told the front desk about it actually 6 times and NOBODY came to fix it. We signed a lease with Gateway under USC Hosuing; therefore, we are GUARNTEED Warm / Hot shower water, but nothing was fixed. An inspection team came to inspect the apartment 2 weeks ago and I told them about the cold water and nobody came to fix the problem. 4 dreadful months of COLD SHOWERS 4!!!!! No one should tolerate this. I paid $6,000 per semester to shower in COLD WATER and get waken up at 3 am because of the fake fire alarms. Do not rent at University Gateway. read more

University Gateway is the perfect option for student housing for those attending the University of Southern California! I've been living there for about a year now, and plan on staying for at least one additional year. Moving into it at the beginning of my sophomore year, it was such an improvement from the freshman housing that I had. You feel like you actually have your own home and space, instead of constantly feeling like you're in a hostel. You can definitely get much more comfortable and at home living here. The apartments all come with a kitchen and living space, with simple but decent appliances and amenities. The one thing I don't understand is why the ceiling has no lighting in it, save for the kitchen area. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, and all come with their own bathroom inside of them, great for more privacy. While I'm disappointed that the fitness center and other amenities offered downstairs have been mostly unavailable while I've been here, it's for a good cause: renovation. I'm looking forward to the enlarged fitness center and new lounges that they are creating. The courtyard of Gateway also has a lovely soak deck and seating. I wish it had a grill! The best part of Gateway is its location, as it's directly across the street from campus. You get all the benefits of off-campus housing and a lot more privacy and freedom, all while being two seconds away from campus. That's why I love it, and it's the perfect location to live while a student! read more

After three months of waiting I still have not received my security deposit I submitted with my application ... It was such a long confusing series of communication that their management team are not even sure what information they provided were accurate. In short, after not receiving my check for over a month, they first told me they sent to a different address to the one a staff confirmed with me. I requested a new one since it was their fault sending it wrong. Then was told the check was cashed and I have to take care of it since it was out of their hand. Which means, the check was stolen. After reminding them it was their fault sending to a wrong address, they changed their words and said they sent to the correct address ... yet after all these confusing communications they still have not provided me any valuable information like which bank cut the check so that I can actually do something to ask the money back - since they don't want to do anything. I only wanted to take someone else's lease for 7 months then this introduced me into so much annoyance. All 1-star reviews are accurate - from a person who have lived there for 2 years. My daughter had some issues with her roommate and I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the management at Gateway. They were very understanding and responsive and helped me navigate through a difficult situation. When I was referred to To Charlie Blake, manager of the USC gateway apartments, He was able to help me with the issues of freshman living in a new place. It is a big building, but Charlie lived in it and attended USC So he really knew the dynamics of students living there. It is a big building, sometimes work orders move slowly, but I think that is to be expected in such a large building. That is the only complaint but you know that going in. Wish I could give this place -100 stars. Leslie lies constantly and is the worst possible management ever. I've never met someone with so little compassion, rationality, responsibility, and lied so much. She relocated me and my roommate in the middle of finals week despite my evidence that my housemate lied. She also initially intended for my roommate and I to be separated despite being on very good terms. She told me that I wouldn't have to move out, and a week later sent me an email saying I had 24 hours to move out in the middle of the WEEK... IN THE MIDDLE OF FINALS. (Additionally, because we moved out in the middle of finals, my roommate literally moved back home 2 days after moving and I moved out 1 week later so I really don't understand how she couldn't just have us stay for literally one more week when I lived with my housemate the entire year and had no problems.) Refused to cooperate with me at all to let me move out after 6pm so I could finish my finals (which went from 10am to 4pm) and my work shift (had to cancel work so I could move out). She said management had "evidence" against me which is why I had to move out, the evidence was my housemate secretly recording me bringing a single friend over to talk at like 7pm. They also had evidence I smoked in the apartment when I never smoked in the apartment. Apparently maintenance secretly checked my air filter but they didn't realize that the kitchen oven creates unbelievable amounts of smoke because it never ever got cleaned. She fined me $300 for having my friend's emotional support animal in my apartment for less than 4 hours when I pay my rent myself. When I called to report a dog barking nonstop from 12am to 5am, she did absolutely nothing. I cried for hours and had a panic attack. She should be fired. She pretends to be kind and understanding but behind your back she'll do everything she said she wouldn't do. She talks about how she's too busy to meet with me and then I see her gossiping with her coworkers in the Gateway lobby every single day. Got security called on me every single day during finals week and security would yell at me for making noise when I was alone in my apartment studying and not talking at all. Was sitting in the courtyard at 7pm on Halloween and got kicked out of the courtyard by security because "you can't be in the courtyard on Halloween." What??? Fire alarms... at 3am.... for 30 minutes straight on a Tuesday night during midterms season with the alarm directly above your head. At least 3 times a month. There's also many wifi blackouts, people getting into the apartment complex and knocking on my door asking for money, I ordered a package and it arrived at Gateway and Gateway lost it. This place is also incredibly expensive when every single thing in the apartment is falling apart. I had to repair my sink and bathtub myself because maintenance took forever to come. Lights breaking, chairs falling apart, window blinds breaking and falling off, the AC broke every single day during the summer so it was 90 degrees in my apartment. The carpet is INCREDIBLY crusty, there were spots in the kitchen that literally had not been cleaned for years. Also, if you lose your key, they will charge you $150 for a replacement. I once stuck my key fob in my door and it suddenly broke in half and got stuck in the door which wasn't even my own fault, and I had to call my parents because I refused to pay for it. Like if I lost my keys I'd pay but the door literally broke it. My dad went to repair my bike and security berated him... yet somehow allowed for my bike to be stolen. The laundry rooms have literally 3 washers and are always full. I truly wouldn't recommend living here when there's so many other decent places nearby. The price is so expensive and you are getting nothing in return besides proximity to campus. The management and people who work here are terrible and they do not care about you, they do not respect you, and they consider themselves superior to you. They are extremely greedy and will do nothing to help you. Also the pool is stupid too, why do we need a 2 foot deep fountain bro. Leslie if you're reading this, please quit this job and go work somewhere that deserves you, like sewer management or toilet cleaner. read more

Our kitchen dishwasher started leaking water late night on a Friday, so we immediately put in a maintenance request to have it fixed. Pedro Urbina showed up early on a Saturday morning to tell us and fix what was going on. He even voluntarily cleaned up all of the mess that occurred in the kitchen. My experience living here has been worse than I could have imagined. Firstly, this place does not inspect rooms before they are given to you at the beginning of the year. Mine had brown and black stains all over the carpets and walls, and trash under the bed and in the drawers. Maintenance is quick to get back to you, but slow to actually fix it. The two workers they have are quite nice, but it's taken me days to get smaller issues fixed, and over a month to get an AC fixed. Washing/dryer machines are very frequently broken, I have gotten more wet loads of clothes out of the dryer than I have dry ones. I lived here from Aug 2016 to July 2017 and decided to leave this place as soon as possible. If you're looking for housing, avoid this place. Pro: 1. Location 2. They returned most of my deposit (charged me $205). It's very generous of them compared to everything else gateway provides. Con: 1. Staff 1). Most staffs do not care about anything at all and acting like I owe them money. 2). Staffs at Gateway are very inefficient. For example, when I moved in, I found out that my bathtub is clogged. I went to the office and asked for maintenance. Next day, maintenance didn't show up so I went to the office again. Got the excuse from a staff "there are so many requests blah blah blah since everybody is moving in". After repeating this in the next several days, I finally yield to them and demanded an immediate fix for my bathtub. A manager looking staff heard this quarrel and just simply made a call to the maintenance team and fixed my bathtub right after. 2. Maintenance Takes at least a week to show up 3. Security I had a terrible neighbor who played loud music during midnight. Security doesn't have an effective way of dealing with this kind of tenants but just to tell them to turn off the music. Eventually, I decided to call DPS to solve this problem, which is way more effective 5. Ambience Stinky smell is all over the place since Gateway decided to clean trash once a week. The trash room is filled with trash while new trash has to be placed in the hall way. To sum up: Do you want to live with trash and enjoy its unique stinky smell? Do you want to see people who act like you owe them a million dollars? If that's what you want, University Gateway is the right place for you. P.S. ZERO STAR! BED BUGS! SCAM! RUN! This is literally the worst place I've ever lived in, and I regret my decision to lease here every day. BED BUGS ALERT. Bed bugs are absolutely rampant in this building, and stop wishing their management team could solve the issue for you by treating the unit effectively or relocating you to another unit. After multiple failed attempts to treat, they refused my request to terminate the lease early or even relocate to another unit. So I had to rent another apartment, while still paying UG's rent. Details: Since I moved in last August, on and off, I mysteriously felt itchy after going to bed. At first, I thought I was just having some allergic reactions until the situation got worse since this March as I almost could find myself sleepless every night, waking up to excruciatingly itchy bites. I finally realized this building is infested with bed bugs after having done some research online, read others' yelp reviews, and visually spotted bed bugs crawling on the walls and my beddings. I reported the situation to the management team, and they asked Orkin (an exterminator) to come. After the first treatment, bugs came back, and I had to stay with my relative to escape the sleeplessness between treatments because they unapologetically and explicitly said there would be no relocation. So Orkin came the second time, and the treatment was still not working!!!! The leasing manager even tried to bill me for the third treatment because she said Orkin came too many times only to find my unit was not in good shape for treatment. I live in a private room, and I prepped my room according to the guidelines provided. Orkin said my room was ready for treatment. I had no control over what my roommate does to his room, and he's not reported any bed bug infestation in his room. Also one day, I noticed there were signs on doors of other units, which I had not paid much attention to, indicating bed bug treatments. This whole building is f infested with bed bugs!!! Mark this: they bring the bed bugs to feed on you, and you will need to pay for THEIR negligence, incompetence, and mismanagement physically, financially, and emotionally! Simply preposterous! Also, now I might have ptsd due to this. I will sue you if this gets worse. DANGEROUS BUILDING. Also, I certainly do not feel safe living in this community as homeless people not only dwell downstairs but also in the staircases and hallways near the parking lot elevator (which has been out of order for months). There's no security entering the stairwell there, and I personally came across homeless people several times. There's foul-smelling trash, dirty and torn clothes and underwear, and bottles filled with urine everywhere in the stairwell. I feel so scared, and it almost feels like living next to a dumpster. RIDICULOUS RENT CHARGES & SCAMS. My rent is nearly $2300 per month for a private room. The rooms in this building are designed to accommodate two people, and you basically need to buy two bed spaces for a private room. If you had the money for this, find an apartment downtown, which will be 100 times safer, cleaner, more well-managed, and more luxurious but cost not much more or even less. Also, first month rent is not prorated. You pay 12 months' rent to stay from August 15th to July 25th the next year (11 months). This is absurd. It is simply not worth it to pay this much to live in a trashy place like this. Also, their rent payment system is a mess, especially for people who have private rooms. I needed to set up two accounts to pay rent before they switched to the new system. The account manager asked us to pay rent on one account, and then he would split it. However, for one month, he didn't, and I got charged the late fee. Like what the? I didn't bother to call them because they were so unresponsive. But just know that, Gateway, you owe me. POORLY BUILT. The units are poorly furnished with the cheapest materials. When I moved in, the stoves were broken, the water pipe in the bathroom was leaking, and the drain was clogged (water literally wouldn't go down for 5 minutes). The carpets were dirty and stained. There was trash in the drawers. They apparently did no cleaning and spared no effort to renovate the units. Also, there's no in-unit washer and dryer. ...the list is too long to complete Literally the only reason I chose to live here was its proximity to school, and I hated everything else about UG. And yes, I have already moved out. Karma is real, and I hope UG goes out of business after COVID. PLZ AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you don't want to relive my trauma. read more

I thought the place looked nice from the start, the leasing office was nice and looked very modern but it is a trick I swear! I am very aware about how corona virus may be affecting business, but there should at least be some discount or something to help appease the absurdly high rent costs for such a shabby apartment. Just because you "disregard" the late rent fee for only April does not help at all, Gateway is probably only doing this because a lot of residents have moved out and are not paying rent. I always have had trouble contacting any representative at Gateway, I had a full on panic attack cause their system messed up when they switched programs and tried to charge me their late fee. It took 4 emails, at least 5 phone calls, and 4 trips to their leasing office to get it fixed (which took at least a week to figure out). They did not even send an email warning me that I was going to be or was late until 2 weeks after it was late. Now for the corona virus, not only can I not talk to an in-person represenative at the office (not only because I am not in LA anymore) but the office is closed. And they are so terrible at responding to emails or phone calls. Sometimes, if you call like 5 times in a row, they would pick up but not anymore. Also, you would assume once you move in that you would get a relatively clean room right? You paid for a new room at the beginning of the semester so you should get a room they just cleaned, ready for you to move in, right? Hell no, they stuck me in a suite already lived in (it was random) and the room was filthy. Not to mention there was just the bare essential, not even bare. You have to go buy your own lamp if you want to be able to see. There was like this black mold in the bathroom, the sink and shower was backed up after one month moving in (and I had to remove the gunk myself cause it is a cleaning issue not a maintenance issue), and when the maintenance crew randomly came to check on our vent? (idk what they were doing) but left like a giant blob of dust hanging from the ceiling and I am short and can't really do anything about it (and wasn't going to, that is disgusting and my allergies would have killed me if I disturbed the monster). Overall, I hated living at Gateway. I hope to never live there again, also good luck with the laundry. Those machines are barely functioning. read more

Lived here for a year. Worst living experience of my life. Bugs in apartment, amenities always out a service and overpriced charges when you move out. Fire alarms constantly went off and elevators were always broken down. Management is also impossible to get ahold of. Do not live here.
