Up-Down Arcade Bar is hands down my favorite bar ever. This place does everything right. All the classic arcade games you could want, and every machine is only a quarter--which is unreal these days. What really sets them apart is how on top of everything they are. If some drunk person breaks a machine, it's fixed almost immediately. No "out of order" signs sitting there all night--staff actually cares that the games work. Service is quick, drinks are affordable, and the bartenders keep things moving even when it's busy. And yes... they have Mario Kart, which alone makes this place elite. Parking here is pretty awful, so plan accordingly, but if you go early you hopefully won't have to walk far. We stopped in on a Friday and had no idea their daily special included 20 free game tokens! That was super cool and kept us busy for quite a while. Also on Friday's before 8pm pizza is only $2 a slice (cash price)! So my hubby got an IPA draft, I ordered a holiday themed cocktail, and we shared 3 slices of pizza. Up-Down is the coolest arcade bar! I love this place. They have every old arcade game imaginable. Including pinball and ski ball which are usually big hits lol. And the games are usually all working too! It's amazing. They also have the Nintendo 64 out for people to play. It's also pretty cheap. They usually have great deals on the token prices and we always have left over tokens. And they have the best pizza by the slice. The slides are hugeeeee and delicious!!! There's also a patio with a couple yard games. And even an upstairs outside! There's virtually no parking though so you have to park a few streets away and walk. Super fun! If you're into retro arcade games, this is the place. It's 21+ at all times and they have somebody sitting inside the door to card you as soon as you walk in. At the bar, you can order all kinds of drinks as well as order tokens instead of paying the withdrawal fee at the atm. Each game takes 1 token or 1 quarter. Also, if you check their website, they might have themed nights. We just so happened to go on Mar10 night so all Mario games were free and there was a Mario cart race for prizes. At the back of the building, you can order pizza, either by the slice or a whole pie. Prices are reasonable and the slices looked huge. Bartending staff was nice and chatty. Staff also walk around taking drink orders as well. All but one of the basketball games were working so they take great care of all the machines! It's an adult gamer's paradise. Arcade and video games in all directions, upstairs and downstairs. Same goes for the bar counters. Everybody looked like they were having a great time. If you're not really into games, the patios on both levels offer wide open spaces to sit and hang out. You will also get better lighting outside too. I spent a good chunk of my time on the upstairs patio, marveling at the Kansas City skyline. This was probably the most happening place in Crossroads on a warm weekend night. It was also the night of the first pre-season Chiefs game. I had one drink, a cherry cider, that was a straight $7 because I paid in cash. Up-Down is well known as one of Kansas City's best hang outs. Elite patio and rooftop deck, retro games, solid beer selection, awesome staff... I could keep going. What I didn't know is Up-Down also helps plan events. You can rent a couple of tables like I did, or you can rent out the patio, the deck or even the whole bar. I was throwing a birthday party, so the tables I rented were an awesome central place where I could set things and meet people. The tokens I purchased at the bar's suggestion were a nice touch. Everybody who attended was able to play some games. I also bought a couple of pizzas from the inhouse pizza parlor in case anybody was hungry. The day was a smashing success. This was my first time I'd ever been to Up-Down and it will not be the last!!!! It's 2 levels, so there's plenty of room for everyone! So many bars, games, and I think the best part was the pizza. When I tell you I was not expecting their BBQ chicken pizza to be so good!!! Definitely now in my top 3 pizza places in KC! The bar tenders are all so sweet and work at a brisk pace so you'll never have to wait on a refill. I love up Down!! But I was told I can't eat outside food on their patio because they sell food there. Unfortunately, I have food allergies and they don't have any options that I am able to eat. So while my friends ate pizza, I had to ordered takeout from somewhere else and was told I had to leave or put it away. I ended up just eating my dinner in my car. Came here for a couple of hours, right after they opened with a group of three. On this particular day it was $1 off local beers. An expansive space inside and outside with plenty of staff to help with anything you needed. All games were a quarter and most were either pinball games or older games from my youth. The upstairs deck is a really a cool spot when you are not playing any games and just want to chill on a nice day. I'd recommend this place, especially for a date night out with groups. Came here as a "surprise" after trying to find anywhere where I'm staying that had to do with pinball. Up-Down is a Gen X wet dream as we all grew up as young teens in the 80s right at the start of the arcade of awesomeness with games like Pac-Man , Donkey Kong, Centipede, Q-Bert, Burgertime, and so many others. The ones I just mentioned are here! And they work! The facility is dimly lit and has all our great music blasting. Full bar, and pizza on order. Daily specials. The games are all a quarter, but on Thursdays you can get 20 for $2 at the bar, so only $.10 a game which is a great deal. They also have skee-ball, basketball shooters, and did I mention at least 10 pinball machines? In-Out was so much f-ing fun for a good couple of hours. My mixed drink sucked, but the beer was good. Saw enough staff cleaning the machines and running the show. My brother and I also got carded even though I could have been the guy's dad. I believe it's adults only here. When we finally left, the place was starting to get full and you could tell that the groups were really having a good time. Highly recommended. read more

This was and will be the spot I take my friends when they visit from out of town. It is such a vibe and when it gets packed, it can be a lot of fun. I have frequented this establishment so much because I love the games, the retro feel, and there is a lot to do with friends. Sometimes the machines don't work quite right but the staff will get it taken care of for you. They have a lot of different beverages and their pizza is surprisingly good! They have great deals which is why i keep coming back for more. It can get packed so just be aware that parking may be difficult and you may be waiting for certain games for a while. read more

Up-Down is one of my favorite places in Kansas City, and it's by far the best "Barcade" that I've ever been to. Full bar, 80s/90s/00s arcade games (that all cost 1 token), pinball, Skee-ball, 4-player Super Nintendo, a great rooftop and a large patio area located in the Crossroads. All of the employees and bartenders are fantastic, they have great specials, and the best part- 21+ all day, every day so no having to dodge little ones when you're trying to do your Mortal Kombat "fatality" combo! It's an amazing place to spend an afternoon- particularly when the weather is nice and they have the windows open! I spent the majority of my time there. Prices seemed high for me, but probably right on for Kansas City. (I'm from Sioux City.) A bartender downstairs made me a kick-ass mocktail. It was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at Up-Down. Yes, we're those annoying Gen X-ers who believe that we grew up during the greatest gaming era. We forgot about some of the classics (Track and Field) and fondly remembered playing others (Indiana Jones) at Metro North. Service was prompt, polite, and fun. Hey, you're working in an arcade, what's not to love? You can check the website to see the current lineup, which games are currently on the floor (GREAT idea!) so you have something to look forward to. UD's layout is cool and unlike any arcade you remember. There's a balcony with a few pinball machines and sleepers if you need some more space for your elbows. Our main feedback would be to inspect the games weekly for broken buttons and/or malfunctions. We played 4 games that weren't working properly. And yes, we told the staff. read more

It has no cover charge, and there are a variety of single-player and multiplayer games, so all you need is yourself and some cash or quarters, since Up-Down is coin-operated for most, if not all, of the games. I would say Up-Down isn't the place for: - First dates: This place is always crowded at pretty much any time of night, and it's hard to have meaningful conversations. Most of the games are single player, and the games meant for groups are hard to edge your way into with just two people. - Signature drinks: Up-Down has a full bar and a beer menu, but since I'm not much of a beer drinker, I was looking for something closer to a cocktail. The bartender wasn't sure what to make but suggested the Purple Rain, which, thankfully, was perfect for me: sweet, mild, and a little citrusy. - Food: they've got a pizza counter at the back with a menu, but I haven't seen it actually operating.
