The Up Spa is a cute & calming boutique spa on the Upper East side. From the beginning I was welcomed by Kathy tended to. I scheduled a Vagacial and was definitely excited. Kathy was my technician and first part of my Vagacial was a hard wax and it was NOT hard at all. Very easy on my sensitive skin & not painful. Then we proceeded to the second part which was the "facial" portion & it was very basic. I expected a little more but still enjoyable. Was here last weekend (11/10) for the first time after booking a "Pamper Me Up" massage and Extractor Express facial online. I must say, the establishment exudes serenity as soon as you arrive. The female (Cathy) at the front desk greeted me warmly and offered me something to drink. Since they didn't have coffee, I went ahead and had the life changing ginger tea. Took a moment to complete a bit of paperwork work being that it was my first time there. As soon as I was finished, I was greeted by my masseuse who provided me with a deep tissue massage upon request. To my surprise, the woman at the front desk (Cathy) performed my facial. Goes to show that everyone there is skilled and not just there to provide a pretty friendly face. She educated me on which facial products to use versus what not to use. Also, spoke about how beneficial the electrical currents are for your skin. One thing I would say would've been great was if my masseuse was a Male instead. I just feel that males can naturally apply more pressure without exerting much energy than a female can. I have two friends who highly recommended this Spa and so I finally decided to check it out. Long story short the customer service over the phone is certainly not 5 Star worthy. For starters, the tone is very strong and wasn't appealing to me as a prospective customer. I thought it was just a one off when one of the estheticians (Cathy) booked my appointment. While I didn't care for the tone, I did appreciate her flexibility and willingness to book an appt for me at my desired time. I secured my appt by providing my CC # over the phone. At this time I wasn't made aware of the CC cancelation policy. I tried to book an appt through yelp, but was told that website appts aren't accurate which is why I likely missed the cancelation policy. I called the Salon at 9:45 AM to cancel my 6:15 appt given my job called a last min 5:30 pm meeting which would've made me late for the appt. as a courtesy, I called before their 10 Am open time and the owner (Ashely) had that same tone, very strong and curt and insisted on charging me for an appt that I was unable to make and communicated hours in advance. I told her I was a first time customer to which she wasn't budging. I called her out on her tone and she said, " Oh, so I'm rude, because you're mad you're not getting your way?" As a working professional I respect other working professionals and I also respect cancelation policies that are clearly communicated. Because I corresponded with Ashley via Yelp, and was given prices there, I never got around to the website since I follow them on social media and got a good sense of their services. In short, it was distasteful to book an appointment with me and then argue with me when I stated that I wasn't made aware of the cancelation fee. As a first prospective time customer who is very gracious in assessment, I didn't appreciate the lack of flexibility and understanding. While I understand cancelation policies clearly, there was no mention of a cancelation policy on the phone nor on my email confirmation. With this in mind, it would've spoke volumes had my cancellation been honored, since I was available and willing to come the very next day if there was availability. The actual spa service with the technicians was great but the atmosphere and attention to details needs work. I came here for my birthday because my husband booked me a scrub and facial. I didn't want to get the facial and was able to trade it for a massage instead. The attendants were all really nice. The scrub and massage were good even though the scrub was short-- like 20mins. The massage made up for it and was my favorite. My therapist was attentive and listened to my problems areas, which included my knees...lol, and gave me a fantastic massage. So cons... there were no slippers for my feet. I had to transition from the room where I got the scrub to the massage room bare foot which was less than ideal. Apparently there is work being done in the building. During my scrub I could hear banging and power tools in the space above the room with my service. It was really hard to relax. Also, I'm not sure if they are digging up plumbing but the hallway entering the shop and leaving smelled disgusting, like sewage. During my massage you could also hear the ladies at the front desk talking and laughing loudly with each other and customers. Glad they were happy but again that made it hard to enjoy the massage because of the noise. I'm not sure if I'll be making a return visit to try again. read more

My wife and I came to the UP Spa because it was so well rated on Yelp. We live in East Village and made the trek up to the Upper East Side solely based on the reviews and commentary. This was our first time coming to a boutique spa not affiliated with a hotel. The experience was nothing but disappointing at best. You would be far better served going elsewhere (and get significantly better value). When you arrive, you have to call into a call box and then walk up some old raggedy stairs that are crooked and look like they're about to fall apart to the second story where the spa is. I was seriously worried the stairs were going to break under us. We arrived 10 minutes early to our appointment knowing that spas are often booked back-to-back with appointments. When we arrived, the television had "Fixer Upper" playing. Wasn't exactly the most relaxing viewing when you arrive. We were greeted by the host who was friendly but barely spoke any English. She brought us freshly made ginger tea and a cup of water for my wife that had fresh fruit in it. Then she brought out a warm neck pillow. Our appointment ended up starting 45 minutes late (which in my opinion is super late) but the snacks and ginger tea while we were waiting made it better. Once the massage room was ready, we started. The room was TINY with barely any room to move around. It was dimly lit with a view of the building atrium (trust me - the WORST view - equivalent to looking into a dingy, poorly lit alley). The equipment was nice (included a heated massage bed) and the massage therapists were OK. My therapists was great - my wife's, not so much. My wife kept having to ask her to stop pressing so hard (and this was a recurring problem for her) and the massage she received was not relaxing (according to her). After our hour was up, we got dressed. The bill was over $400 for two people when you factor in ~15% tip (which we reluctantly gave only because we wanted to make sure the therapists were taken care of). Total RIP OFF and NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Those of you looking for a good spa experience, you can get a WAY BETTER massage experience going with The Plaza hotel's spa or many others that have FAR NICER, CLEANER, rooms and better quality staff (we've been to many spas in the past). Do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere where you'll get far better value than here. read more

My massage therapist was Lisa, when I say you're not going to find a more informative, pleasant, warm, just a down to earth person, I mean just that. Lisa knew my body before I said anything, not to mention she gave me some great tips for stretching out really tight areas using comfy positions (since I'm knocked up lol). No mention that they were about to undergo a 6-month 'renovation' and never reopen their doors. These assholes never responded to my request for a refund, and by the time I realized I had been ripped-off, my credit card company (Chase) decided that too much time had passed since the purchase for them to do anything about it. In November, I visited Up Spa. I was visiting NY for a break from "reality." I really wanted to treat myself to some "me time," so I scheduled a spa day with their facility based off of the previous reviews. Let's just say I was not let down. The four star rating is only because I feel I was overcharged for one service, and unfortunately, I didn't catch it until I left. However, because they treated me so well, I let it go. It wasn't that big of a deal since I did get a lot of work done, and let's just say I am not small chicken. The services done included a revagination (including steaming, charcoal mask, extraction, etc.) I got the works for "my friend" because I figured just like I needed me time, she needed to feel "rejuvenated" as well. Let me tell, my Fiance DEFINITELY noticed a perk in her step OKAY! I also got a full body, hot stone massage, which was 90 minutes, but it went by so fast! For kicks and giggles, I got the works done with the body contouring, including the butt lift, lipo suction, etc. Now, I will say, maybe if you go consistently you will see a difference. Also, maybe if you are thin, but you have a "pouch," you will notice a difference. However, if you are plus size, don't waste your time. It was a great experience, but you will not see any difference in your butt, cellulite, or anything. YET, if you are like me, and just want to do the shit GO FOR IT! Lastly, and most importantly, they treated me like a Queen. The owner is STUPID nice, and her staff are very nice and cordial. I mean literally, I was talking to the young lady doing my vajacial about her daughter (sorry I forgot their names). But I am just saying I was comfortable....oh I almost forgot THEY ALSO FED ME and gave me wine! They provided lunch to me free of charge (but of course you know it was included in the overall bill somewhere). Nonetheless, I had an awesome experience at UP Spa. I am definitely going back, possibly in January to plan my cousin's birthday. They are great people, and I truly enjoyed myself. read more

I took my daughter to Up Spa as a treat for her 17th birthday. She chose a massage. I chose the Glow Up facial with Kathy. The ambience was on point; relaxing and calming. Kathy took great care with my skin. Providing aftercare tips. My skin literally looked like new skin. Even though aftercare tips were offered there was no product up sell which I absolutely loved.
