I've been to Upland Carmel once and liked it but the original Upland in Bloomington is even better! They've got an impressively large space that was packed on a nice late summer evening. Luckily, our group snagged a table on the patio - highly recommend dining out there. I'm not a beer girl but they carry local vendors like Oliver Winery so I ordered a glass of blueberry wine. I loved it so much, I stopped at Oliver on the way back to Indy to buy a bottle! We split some appetizers (pretzels, etc.) and I ordered the pulled pork sandwich for dinner which was juicy, tender and delicious. Despite the busy restaurant, service was solid. Had tried some brunch options. Muffin and crème were cold out of the walk in. When brought to severs attention they were kind and sent back. The return was a microwaved puddle of slop around a soggy muffin. Peppered bacon was undercooked and found rubbery. most new menu items don't last and the menu relies heavily on deep fat fried items. Like me, my step son is a largely a beer and burger guy and during a recent trip to see his family, we all ended up here for dinner after he summarily rejected a few more "adventurous" choices, like Turkish or Indian. We arrived on a very rainy evening and with very few parking choices close by. Gayle still talks about me leaving her at the curb while I drove off to find a spot a few blocks away. What she leaves out is that the restaurant was a half a block away. The Upland Brewing building is large and handsome with lots of dark wood and brick accents. I ordered per prediction and had a couple really good hoppier and/or darker beers to go with the burger. The menu was surprisingly varied, resulting in food choices that everyone pleased. The beer is very good, but the food is unremarkable and the service is sometimes lousy and sometimes ok. For what you get, prices are excessive but not terrible. I drop in once a year or so and have a thoroughly unremarkable time. If you're looking for a dinner you won't regret very much, this is a good choice. read more

Upland has been on my list for quite some time now. Happy to say that I finally got to try it out! I can't remember what beer we got but I do know it had hints of hibiscus in it, it was great tasting. The food was amazing. We ordered chips and salsa, tenderloin, and the Cuban sandwich. The salsa was awesome, our waiter mentioned how it was made in house so it made it even better. My sandwich was great tasting. Happy to see a pork tenderloin that's as big as Scotty Brewhouses's once was. My only complaint is that it's a bit more expensive than I'd like it to be, but that could also be because of the fact that I'm in college and always looking for a good deal. I have been to Upland many many times so I'm going to give a review on my overall experiences. I cannot remember everything i have eaten there but its been quiet the gamut. The location is great, just outside of campus, downtown. There is good parking options unless they are having a large event next door then it gets a little thin. But there isa parking for bicycles, and motorcycles. The facility itself is nice, tons of outdoor seating, very bright and open feel inside and a small cozy bar. The beer is very good here, and they do have options of sours from their new sour production facility next door. Cant go wrong with that! The food is really good with quiet a few vegetarian and vegan options. They have a mixture of normal pub food but also some unique options. I did recently have the Thai Tofu Salad and i have to say it was very delicious! The staff can be hit or miss here. Mostly they are good and on point but i have had a few occasions of slow or questionable service. Still one of my go to spots when visiting Bloomington. Do keep in mind if you're a sour-hound like me, they have a separate location that's solely devoted to sours so while you can get a handful of sours on tap here (and the full bottled line-up to-go), if you want to delve into all the sour beer options you'll want to plan your trip for a date when the sour annex -- the Wood shop -- is open (it was closed on the Tuesday when I was passing through town). We came here on a Saturday evening, after hiking in the area. The place was extremely busy but we were seated quickly. Once seated, we were told it was going to be a little bit by our server. She explained she had several tables ahead of us, which was fine. However, It probably my took 20-25 min just to get our drink order. After reading Yelp reviews of how awesome their nachos were, my husband and I both ordered them. Unfortunately, they were THE worst nachos, we have ever had. They tasted like day old nachos that had been reheated in the microwave. I could barely pull my nachos apart because the cheese had cemented them together. The ground beef had very little flavor. My friends and I have been wanting to try a beer flight for awhile now and we finally came around to doing it at Upland! The flight that we ordered had 7 different beers (we couldn't choose which ones we wanted so I assume it's a fixed selection for the flights). Enjoyed post bike ride beers and food at Upland yesterday. Second visit. Very relaxed atmosphere, tasty beers and surprisingly good food. We had the Pig and fig and Hoosier tenderloin sandwiches. My partner has been vegan for the past 13 years, so when we hear there is a restaurant that will serve him instead of just taking cheese off an item, I'm all in. This place not only satisfied his love for local beer but he was stuffed by the time we left. Their tofu is unlike any tofu I've ever tried, and honestly, it's been my go-to when we visit, even though I'm not vegan. I wasn't a fan of their home-made ranch dressing, but to each their own. The main reason I've taken a star away is because each time we go, we tend to have a server who either doesn't remember what we've requested that's outside the norm and/or doesn't visit our table for extended periods of time. Being from Sacramento, I am a little spoiled on good beer places. NorCal has a bunch of awesome beer places, and Upland... Well.... It's a good try. They have a very extensive beer selection but nothing really stood out. The sours that I was really excited about trying were just total miss. However, the ambiance of this place is pretty cool, even if their beers are just ok. It's chill, laid back... I am not sure I'd say this is a place I'd take the kids on a weeknight, but there were a few toddlers around. I was looking forward to the swordfish tacos because of all the rave reviews, but I wasn't really impressed. Strawberries and tacos are not my cup of tea. I did enjoy the beer pretzel bites. The blueberry cheesecake they had was ok, but I have not ever met a cheesecake I didn't like. :P read more

Was so terribly disappointed in the food last evening. Wanted to enjoy the wonderful weather,so we sat outside. Service was fine, but the food has deteriorated to almost un edible. The tenderloin has shrunk by half and was reminiscent of a piece of cardboard on a bun. For a five star rating, I need to have my expectations exceeded. And that happened at Upland. They have a "campus" on the north east corner of Rogers and 11th that has its own parking (Yea!!), outdoor seating, a sister brewery that features sours and offers tours, and a main restaurant & brewery that has lots of options of house beers and food to order. After a morning of hiking around Bloomington, I was thirsty and thought dining inside would be a good option with the air conditioning. The bar was directly across from the entrance, but I felt like sitting in the dining area. So, I went over to the hostess desk and was welcomed before being shown to a table. For a bar, I was pleased that the space wasn't very dark. The dining area had plenty of windows along the 11th street wall. Since the hostess provided a menu that included both food and beer list, I began looking over the options. My waitress (Claire) soon arrived and I asked her about a flight since it was my first time there. She pointed out that the flight was pre-selected from the twelve (yes, twelve) house beers on tap. I didn't realize that there would be seven (yes, seven!) five ounce pours in the flight. What a great way to get introduced to their line of beer! A flight for me? Yes! I also saw they had a Cuban sandwich with Smoking Goose meats available, so ordering was quick and easy. Surprisingly quick, my flight arrived. It was served on a carousel and Claire made sure to point out which seven of the options I would sample. She also provided a bit of detail about those that weren't listed on the printed menus (they have a board in the corner that lists the current taps.) I had sampled some bottled Upland when I first started changing over to craft beer four years ago, so truth be told, I wasn't immediately impressed back then. So when I started off with the Wheat Ale (4.7% 15 IBU), I was surprised at how tasty it was. Very smooth. I also enjoyed the Preservation Pilsner (5%, 35). It was light and clear too. The collaborative PretzAle (with the Tap) was supposed to have flavor reminiscent of a pretzel (6.5%, 30) but because my Cuban and fries had arrived by then, the beer seemed to have hints of chocolate to me, not pretzel. I wondered if I had the right beer. Must have been the smokiness of the pork in the sandwich that altered my taste. The next sample was the Two Tarts which was my favorite of the flight (4.5%, 5). It had a mango centric flavor (I can't remember what Claire said the other fruit was.) She says it mixes great with orange juice too! I finished off the rest of the flight including the Hills Have Ryes (4.9% 50), Dragonfly IPA (6.7%, 65), and Octoberfest (6.7%, ?IBU). When I had finished, Claire asked about which ones I liked and if any were unpleasant. I mentioned the Dragonfly IPA was harsh to me. It really packs a punch of bitter and hops that I think someone would have to be a die hard hopper to enjoy. She brought me a small sample of the Herrmann Valley Weizen (Hefeweizen 5%, 15) and the Mother's Harvest (wet-hopped IPA 6%, 50). The hefe was good, but not as deep in flavor as others I've had. But the Mother's Harvest was really good! It was much more approachable than the Dragonfly and I really enjoyed it. Oh, and the Cuban was quite good. It had a real smoky flavor. Since it was sliced in half, I ate the first half without any additional condiments. The pickles (may be house made?) were mildly seasoned, not tart or overly dill flavored. For the second half, I added some yellow mustard and that bit of acidity offset the smokiness just a bit. Both sides were tasty! The fries were nearly perfect! I like a bit of crunch on the outside (boo on soggy fries!) and these were just right. The insides were warm and fluffy. They were lightly salted but otherwise, unseasoned. And there was a long pickle spear as well. The service was efficient and personable too. I'm kicking myself for not leaving an even larger tip since the service from Claire was more friendly and helpful than at the steakhouse I dined the night before. Despite getting here right at dinner time on a Saturday, we were quickly seated. Our server was friendly and told us about the beer specials. I love a good sour, and their list is extensive. Our server was knowledgeable in recommending a good one. A lot of the food is local sourced. It was cool to see a list posted of where different food items come from. Our food was delicious, but I wouldn't get my particular dish again. The kiddo had chicken fingers and fries. The fries were well seasoned and crispy. The chicken tenders appear hand-breaded and were also seasoned properly. My dish was underwhelming. I ordered the mac and cheese. Since it was an entree, I expected a hefty serving with a generous breadcrumb topping. Instead, the serving was on the small side with only a dusting of crumbs. To our server's credit, when I complained at the plainness of the dish, she brought me a small cup of toasted breadcrumbs to add. The dish was also overwhelmed by garlic. I'm a HUGE garlic fan, and it was just too much. Between that and the blandness of the mac itself, it wasn't great. However, I asked for hot sauce and between that and stealing a couple of the kid's chicken tenders to chop up and mix in the mac, it was pretty serviceable. read more

My order at Upland? ALL the sours please. It's my favorite kind of beer from the brewery, and it's pretty much all I crave in the spring. Upland puts a great deal of time and effort into their sours program, so much that they've built a facility strictly for brewing and aging them! There's so many specific sours to love, but I will say that if there's a raspberry lambic available, watch out: that baby is all mine. Most recently I tried the Vinosynth White, a collaborative effort with Oliver Winery, and it was the first time I actually enjoyed Indiana wine. But I also need food if I'm going to be a responsible consumer, something that will soak up my sours. My recommendation? NACHOS. Upland serves 'em up right with a heaping pile of blue corn tortilla chips smothered in a heavy blanket of shredded cheese (not the liquid junk), tomatoes, black beans, and a jalapeno-tomato salsa. (NOTE: you can ask for spicy chicken, beef, tofu, or BBQ pulled pork to be thrown into the mix for an additional $3.) This plate means business, and I show my respect by making sure nothing goes to waste. If you haven't figured it out already, you must come pay your sour and appetizing respects at Upland. But, its not that season and I prefer fresh ingredients. The replacement items are great. I'm trying the lettuce wrap appetizer. Its a great deal! These are huge with warm rice and mushrooms. Upland has a great beer selection, nice menu options for all dietary needs and cool atmosphere. We went for lunch on a Sunday to celebrate our youngest daughter's 21st birthday. All was great except our middle daughter's Thai tofu salad was not served as ordered (i.e., hold the bell peppers) nor was she offered a soda refill (she was the only one out of our party of five drinking soda vs beer). Our server did not write anything down as we ordered which always leaves you wondering if everything will come out right. Well, her salad was not right and she spent a good five minutes picking out all the bell peppers out of her salad before she could start eating. If you're not a bell pepper fan, you know how annoying this can be and how the taste of them will remain even after removing them. So, she was a good sport because we should've sent it back to be made according to how she ordered it, especially given its $12 price tag. I was surprised when our server stopped back by a few minutes later and did not even acknowledge the pile of bell peppers on my daughter's napkin -- it was pretty hard to miss! The other orders came out correctly: 1) Cuban with cup of chili, 2) Seitan Tenderloin with fries, 3) Falafel wrap with chips, and 4) Upland salad with homemade cream horseradish poppy seed dressing, all of which was very tasty. If we hadn't encountered the salad issue, I'd gladly give a 5-star rating. My family had a quick bite tonight after activities. The restaurant wasn't busy so we were hoping to get in and out quickly. My husband and daughter arrived before my son and I and ordered food ahead. We arrived and food was already at the table. My son and I just needed drinks and my husband a refill. The kids began to eat and we waited for the server to arrive. We grew frustrated waiting and looked around after about 10 minutes. Our waitress was chatting at the host stand ignoring her tables. We waited another five minutes before I went to her and asked her to help us. She did follow me to the table and took a drink order and I ordered soup in addition to the food we had. Another 10 minutes before we had drinks (water and a lemonade only) as my husband had his beer already. Everyone finished eating and we waited for the server to return. We waited for 15 minutes before she came in our direction. She dropped drinks and checked on the two tables near us, ignoring our empty, dirty dishes and my husbands empty beer glass. She went to an empty table where another server was clearing and began helping and chatting. I again walked over to her asking for the check and stated we would like to leave. My husband likely would have ordered another beer had the server been attentive and we would not have left frustrated.
