Today I went to Upper Crust and asked the employee that answered the telephone what I wanted. I have been a customer of theirs for 4 years now. I usually have people with me to go into the store and get what we want. Today I was by my self and asked if they could accommodate a handicapped person by bringing my order to the car at the curb just outside and I was denied. They have accommodated in the past. Girlfriend and I eat here once a week for lunch. California Chicken sandwich is amazing. My girlfriend always gets the grilled cheese, which is nice, because I usually get to eat half of it. It is the best damn grilled cheese I have ever had. I feel like I need more protein and vegetables in a meal, so I go with the california chicken, but if it wasn't for that, the grilled cheese is where I would be. One of their specials was a butternut squash quesadilla that we only saw once. I really wish they would bring it back, because it was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten for lunch. I have never had any of their pastries, but the lady says they are pretty good. This place deserves every star I give them, and then some. read more

I went on my trip into Chico on a coworker's recommendation, and I had the grilled cheese. Yummmmm! They brush the bread with aoli before grilling, so it gets this great little crust on it. The lady who took my order was really annoying. me: "can I get the grilled cheese?" her: "yes, we have grilled cheese." me: "okay, yes, that's what I'd like to order." her: "you know it's not regular grilled cheese, right?" me: "yes, so can I please order the grilled cheese?" maybe she just couldn't hear. but everyone else was nice. :) definitely a cozy little place i'd go back to! read more

We were in town for college orientation. Upper Crust is conveniently located right across from the campus. We had an excellent Quiche Lorraine, a bear claw croissant, a snickerdoodle cookie and a Mexican Coffee. All reasonably priced, well executed and served by a friendly knowledgeable staff. great atmosphere, dinning room, and food selections I don't think of this place primarily as a bakery where I would go to get my birthday cake made, or a special pie ordered, they're not that amazing as far as I'm concerened. I've spent a lot of time in this place, mostly when I am serving on a committee for a group or organization I'm a part of. I always try to push for us to meet here. The setting is quiet, they have big tables that are great for meeting with small groups. Everytime I come here (during the school year anyways) there is always a few students sitting there studying by themselves. Its more of a coffee shop atmosphere rather than a bakery. I've ate a wide variety of things off this menu, various light salads during lunch time, scones and muffins in the morning. Coffee or an italian soda, is almost always something on my mind when I come here, they do both well. read more

When I crave a baked good (which is often), this is the first place that comes to mind. You can't go wrong with their beautifully decorated sugar cookies or soft snickerdoodle. Not only are their baked good delicious, but their cakes are to die for. My parents refuse to buy cakes anywhere else but here. My favorite is the Vanilla Marquis, which I actually just tried this last month. The raspberry rum is a family favorite. "Quick! I have to wipe my noseprints off the bakery case". This place is stellar! The snickerdoodles and lemon scones are a favorite. (yum!) Good coffee too so you can wash down all those treats correctly! Yes they can be a little pricey but you get what you pay for and as for me I prefer quality. I've been dropping in here for several years and as always I'm greeted by friendly staff, never a hint of "attitude". The local artwork displays are wonderful and create a feel of community. Great pastries. Good service. Great coffee. That's the good stuff, but I do have some complaints. Tables are too small! Also, if you want to read, you have to go up the street and over to the 7-11 for a paper. Before you order. Also, it's downtown and that means parking meters. When will they learn? Smart cities got rid of the meters years ago. I've heard that the lunches are great and I will be back for a try. Same with breakfast; we'll be back for a try. Oh my word! Discovering this place has been one of the best things that has happened to me in Chico! During my first visit, I got the tuna sandwich with a side salad. It was the best tuna sandwich I've ever had. And, it was a huge serving that I couldn't finish it! I bought a mini cheesecake to go, and it was delicious. The second time I visited, I got a coconut macaroon. They're HUGE. I honestly couldn't finish it. It's more like a macaroon mountain! I also got a frosted snickerdoodle cookie. Though I'm not a fan of snickerdoodle cookies, it was heaven. Their Russian tea cakes are also pretty good. So, I'm sure it's a fair bet that all their desserts are to die for. I've got their grilled cheese and black bean chili before. The grilled cheese is huge and the best I've ever had. Gooey cheese on focaccia bread - what more could you ask for? I'm a huge chili/soup person, and the black bean chili is on point. Get the cilantro-sour cream mix in it. It adds a kick, and I don't feel crummy afterwards. It's perfectly filling. As you can see, I've never been disappointed. It's a great place to have lunch while indulging in their pool of desserts. I'll miss this place when I move away. read more

What a quiet, charming place to get some writing done on a Saturday afternoon. I had the black bean chili (of course). Spicier than expected but delicious. So good. So so good. My girlfriend and I eat here every week just about, and the service is always quick. Great employees, regular college kids who are always helpful. It seems like you're expected to clean up after yourself when you finish eating, which is fine by me. I'm a huge soup fan and they serve 3 or 4 fantastic soups daily (they actually have a soup calendar you can take home - I got mine!) My girlfriend and I have always found something just right. Today my family and I went to Upper Crust Bakery to enjoy the much belated birthday lunch of my aunt and I. I had heard a lot about the sandwiches here for a few months now, and after having their red velvet cake (everyone should have this, it's absolutely amazing) at my grandparents' anniversary party... I couldn't wait. Let's say, I am far from disappointed. I got the Upper Crust Grilled Cheese. Now, this sandwich would have received a perfect 5 stars had the focaccia not had fennel seeds in it, because I just don't like them and they ruined any bite that included them. Other than that, it was an awesome sandwich. The softness of the fresh bread balanced by the strong tasting crust of romano cheese on the outside are the first things experienced when taking a bit. The smoky provolone just melts everywhere on the inside of the bread, spreading itself inside the bread, mixing with the yummy tartness of the chevre... Yum.... And the slight freshness of the tomato just puts it so close to perfection. My aunt had the tuna melt, which I believe was a special. She really, really, really liked it, as did her almost 1-year old daughter. My cousin wanted a turkey sandwich with only turkey and mayo on the bread, and they thought that only mayo, meant without the other stuff in the mayo, so he also got the onions and sprouts and whatnot. He wasn't pleased, but it was a mis-communication. After the yummy lunch, where I ate WAY too much, I just had to have some of those delicious desserts to try to not eat right away. I got their vanilla strawberry shortcake, pumpkin chocolate chip cookie and coconut lemon bar. The shortcake parfait was so delicious. Not too sweet. The perfect amounts of vanilla custard, fresh strawberries, shortcake and whipped cream. The pumpkin cookie is very cakey and also delicious. I come here to have great quality food. It's small with a great ambience about it, I recommended the UC grilled cheese. It is hot fresh delicious bread with amazing cheese. I thought this would be a simple task, but after calling a few bakeries became discouraged. Finally called Upper Crust, of course they'll deliver!! And it's only a $10 fee!!! Sign me up!! They walked me through the ordering process and asked when to deliver the cake all within about 5 minutes! Easiest task ever! The cake arrived exactly when promised, my mom was SO happy! Dangerous bakery. When I ordered a cake I called and explained that there were allergens (nuts, soy, red dye) to avoid. The person took the order no problem. When I went to pick up the cake I was immediately surprised to find red sprinkles on the cake. Upon further discussion I was told that there was soy in the cake. If the red sprinkles had not been on the cake I would have left with a cake full of soy not knowing. Will not be going back read more

We arent from the area, but came across this bakery when the wedding cake for the wedding we were attending was not delivered. We rushed over to Upper Crust to try to find a suitable replacement. They had one 8in cake with purple flowers on it that did not match the theme of the wedding, so the staff here worked really hard to get us what we wanted. Chris was able to completely change the look of the cake and gave us the "unfinished" look we were looking for. The cake came out beautifully and the bride and groom LOVED it. I contacted them to do a custom cake for my sons birthday. When I asked them questions and for advise about the details they said "I'm asking YOU because it's YOUR cake" in an extremely rude tone. I was shocked. If I knew the answers I would make my own cake. I wanted to hire experts.
