Last night, I noticed a hole in the wall and decided to try it out instead of Figs. Upper Crust was full of locals, so my boyfriend and I figured it was going to be a great place to get a take out meal to eat at Hatch Shell for a movie. We ordered a mini buffalo chicken calzone, the slice of the month (teriyaki chicken with broccoli) and a slice of cheese pizza. After ordering, we were notified that it would take 30 minutes to get the calzone due to the full capacity of the restaurant. However, since we waited patiently, they popped the calzone in as soon as possible and gave us a complimentary slice. The service is absolutely spectacular; the staff were friendly and understanding. The food was AWESOME. I scarfed down my calzone and my boyfriend was satisfied with his slices. I would recommend this place to anyone who is willing to wait for their great food. Fantastic Mediterranean like pizza and a cozy indoor atmosphere in the winter right on Charles St. An overall favorite in the area- they just started offering vegan cheese which is awesome! Occasionally they do run out of vegan cheese however in which case I walk up the street to All Star Pizza Bar which offers a whole list of vegan pizzas with toppings like baked tofu and jerk roasted jack fruit. Upper Crust is unfortunately delicious, which means I spend more money on their pizza than I should. I'm a huge fan of thin crust pizza and their thin crust is divine. I'm also a huge fan of the fact that you can have "white" pizzas, pesto pizzas, wheat crust, and that there are a variety of options that go beyond the normal fare. I'm particularly fond of the White Spinach, Pollogo Pesto, The Tremont, and Charles Street pizzas. I admit that I do order takeout from this location more than I've ever visited, but the actual location is small. I have, however, stopped to get a pizza and eaten it on the Common or in the Public Garden with friends - so try that plan out next time you pick up a pizza. read more

I love Upper Crust! The workers are always so friendly and helpful and chatty, and I love the pizza so much. It's thin crust, with tons of customization options. I love getting the slice combo: two huge slices (cheese, pepperoni, or the slice of the day/month) with a fountain drink. Excellent pizza, if it is the style you're looking for...thin crisp crust, minimal cheese and sauce with chunks of tomatoes. The topping assortment is large and the offerings are fresh. It is very good pizza if this is what you are looking for. If you want greasy, cheesy, doughy pizza (and sometimes I do) this is not the place for you. It was getting late, coming home after seeing a movie, and we saw people heading home with boxes of pizza. We asked them for recommendations on good pizza in the Beacon Hill area and they all recommended The Upper Crust. We placed our order at 9:15 and 15 minutes later we ad two steaming hot small (14") half and half wheat base thin crust pizzas in front of us. Eating in, we both ate five of the eight slices eating, bagging up the remaining for tomorrow. I ordered one half chicken with jalapeño and the other half the MGH option (full of healthy choices). Whilst the boys closed the shop at 10pm and were cleaning up around us; we were are feel welcome, as strangers from out of town. The host gave s plenty if advice about our selections. Checked this place out on Sunday for some good eats. My bf ordered a small Buffalo Chicken pizza it cost about $15.00. After we ordered we stood and waited, and waited for at least 25 minutes. Every now and then someone would come out to announce a name to deliver the completed order. And no matter how simple the name must have been, it was almost indistinguishable when muttered by the pizza guy. In any case, we were able to get our pizza and were quite happy by the taste. The crust is very thin. The outsides were slightly burnt, but not too burnt that I wouldn't eat it. I was a bit apprehensive to eat a buffalo chicken pizza, but to my surprise it was delicious! I really enjoyed eating this pizza. The chicken was tender and nicely breaded. There wasn't too much sauce and they didn't go overboard on the sauce. I enjoyed eating the pizza even though I had to wait for a long time. I would go here again and try a different type of pizza. read more

We wandered into this place on accident, but I'm sure glad we did because this is my new favorite pizza! The crust was the perfect thickness and chewiness, and I loved how fresh the ingredients were! I liked that there were multiple options for pizza by the slice, either slice of the month, slice of the day, pepperoni, cheese, of vege. The pizza of the month and day were the most unique combinations of toppings that worked so well together! I enjoyed that while I was eating my pizza, I could watch the staff knead the pizza dough and stretch it out, and I was amazed how many empty pizza boxes that were being stacked on one another. I just moved back to Boston and having heard lots of reviews on Upper Crust (both the good and the bad) my husband and I decided to try it out. We placed an order online to pick up at their Charles Street location. We ordered 1 large pie whole wheat crust - half Tremont (white pizza with Prosciutto, fresh basil and fresh tomatoes) and half MGH (fresh spinach, chopped broccoli and yummy feta cheese). I waited 35 minutes before going to pick it up. I had to wait another 15-20 minutes more for the pie to finish which was okay - it was the Sunday night before Marathon Monday, of course they are going to be busy! When my pizza was done, I brought it back to our apartment so that we could indulge. They didn't make it with whole wheat crust, it was on white so I was a bit disappointed from the start. The toppings tasted good but the crust was very disappointing. Too thin for my liking, the toppings made it cave in under their weight, and it was very burnt! I'll give them another chance since it was a busy night... but next time, I'll check my pizza before I leave to make sure it's the right crust and less carcinogenic. read more

Alas, nothing continues on for ever. The Upper Crust Pizza on Beacon Hill has been providing really superb thin-crust pizzas for years. But recently, under new management, their pizzas have changed significantly for the worse. No longer was the especially thin pizza dough worked up at a table in the front window before our eyes. If you are interested in what the slice of day/tomorrow/next week is, you will most likely miss the tiny list hung up on the wall next to the cash register. This place makes the best thin crust and knows it. The owner was buzzing around, helping customers out, asking if things were good. This place rocks because they set out spicy olive oil bottles, regular extra virgin oil, oregano, Parmesan shakers, and chili flakes out on a counter for your dashing pleasure. I have a soft spot for Upper Crusts, since my roomies and I would go at midnight in college (when we were all poor) and snatch up the pizzas left on the top of the dumpster-- the pizzas called-in, but never picked up. We got all kinds of shmancy pies, for FREE. (Sounds gross, but these zas were in boxes, perfectly untouched. It was out little secret. We once battled a snowstorm to get our pies, and were disappointed there were none...and the owner gave us a cheese pie for our effort!) When we DID pay for our pizza, and got it hot--the crust really does rock-- crisp on the outside, bubbly and light, but chewy. They also offer slices, which rotate in flavor depending on the day. The online ordering system is efficient and it gives you a time that the food is going to arrive, no estimates here. The pizza itself was great. Im working on my grading system as I dont have many reviews up on yelp as of yet. First thing I would like to point out is that the crust is "extreemly" thin. The top of the pizza was well cooked but the bottom was very under cooked and there were traces of flour on the bottom of the pie which I am not a paticularly big fan of. I do have to say that the tomatoes they use on their pizza are good, I like a sweet tomatoe sauce so this plays right into what I look for in a pizza. There could have been more cheese on the pizza but for the thickness of the Crust I think it works. I dont have much else to compare this to in Boston other then Reginas, which is probably the best pie I have had in Boston. The experience wasn't bad and everyone who works there is extreemly friendly. I do Hope they check their reviews and take the feedback in a positive light. I've been thinking about my Upper Crust experience, and I've got to dock a star. The slices are greasy at times, and I've found that I don't appreciate carrying it home in a bag (yes, it's more environmentally friendly than a box, but what the environment gets is offset by aforementioned greasiness). I think it's the greasiness that docks the star more than anything else. Yes, it's still good pizza, on par with everything else in the city. But I'd like a little less grease. (EDIT: 3/8/2011... Like the 3 stars says, Upper Crust is A-OK. The location is prime for grabbing a late-night snack after hanging out downtown and before jumping on the red line to head home. And I love any reason to hang out on Charles Street. The 90s jams kept me happy while I was waiting for my slices (to be warmed...) The thin crust style is good, but uninspired - especially for the price. I've been hesitant to patronize this business because of what I've heard of its history (and the subsequent opening of the Just Crust), but the employees seemed pretty happy to me and it sounds like the business has changed its ways. Good, slightly pricey pizza. What really makes this one stand out is the slice of the day-- never just your average toppings, you can get a truly "gourmet" slice. It's rare that I like experimentation when it comes to a tasty staple like pizza, but I'll always try something different here. Not sure what to think-seems hit or miss. The first time I had Upper Crust pizza last summer, I could've sworn it was the best pizza I'd ever had (pesto on wheat). Repeat visits have not been the same. I'm finding that their pizza tends to be too salty and the crust to be too hard on the edges. The last time I went, I ordered a pizza to go and it took about an hour to get the pizza. I'm an engineer and spent a long time trying to figure out their system and left without having figured it out. The guy kept moving the boxes from one stack to another, oftentimes removing boxes from the middle of a stack and moving it to the opposite side of the kitchen. It hardly matter though since the bottleneck is the amount of oven space they have (in case you were wondering). I got tired of watching pizza boxes being shuffled and they didn't call our name so we ended up waiting longer than we had to. The pizza is good, but probably not worth the hassle. read more

By far the best place to stop for food when wandering around Charles Street with hands in pockets and credit card firmly tucked into wallet so that nothing is purchased. Except, of course, for the pizza and maybe one tiny thing that I don't need but cherish from black ink. The crust is nice and chewy with a hint of wood oven smokiness. The toppings are fresh flavorful. The seating is one big table where you can listen in to others conversations and check out (mock) what they bought. Just for this reason, I recommend eating there. That and the slices will definitely be nice and hot and crispy. I've only ordered delivery from the brookline location and it was cold, but I also ordered it during a giant snowstorm... not the nicest move on my part, but I had an out of town guest and ran out of food. read more

Don't think of this as your neighborhood pizza place (try Nino's down the street). But if you're looking for the best thin crust pizza you've ever tasted in your entire life...quality gourmet pizza with quality toppings...then this is place to come for sure. My favorite is the Garden Pesto (amazing pesto, diced tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and asiago cheese) and I can't visit Boston without getting one or 2 to go. I think they used to put pine nuts on it but it's just as good without them (or maybe I made that up). The second they find a way to ship to California I will probably eat 1 a week. All the guys at this location are cool too. Wow, Upper Crust Pizzeria definitely caught me off guard. Since I've been to New York and have tried NY style pizza, why eat pizza in Boston? I should just stick to clam chowder and other seafood. Boy was I wrong. The pizza here is super delicious and I would definitely rank it up there with alot of my favorite NY and Chicago pizza joints. Definitely should make Boston another pizza destination in the US. Not to mention the pizza here is dirt cheap and you can buy combos with soda from anywhere between $5-10 depending on what toppings are on your slice. Another cool thing is there's a table in the middle of the dining room where a chef is folding, kneading, and rolling pizza dough. Ordered delivery around 730 PM on a Saturday evening. It took about 45 minutes to be delivered. Expected being that it was a Saturday. The delivery man came all the way up my apartment which was so nice of him. I would have gone down the 5 flights! The pizza was ok. Nothing to brag about. They do have GF crust which was great for my friend. However the crusts of my pizza were so burnt. You took a bite and another piece would go flying because it just cracked off.
