Decided to try Upper Crust due to the variety of menu options and the dietary requirements of our 8 person group. We had gluten free pizza , regular sausage and pepperoni, vegan pizza and salads. The food was very good. And there were no gluten reactions following the meal. Giving four stars because the hostess who took our order was extremely rude to us and to the cooks. She yelled at us because she mis ordered items we requested on our pizza (she included toppings we were allergic to) and then she belittled the cooks loudly in front of customers. Brendan and Becca: Made a quick stop into the Charles Street location before heading to the movie theater. We had the Swellesley, a spicy chorizo topped pizza. The service was pretty quick and the pizza came out piping hot. The crust was nice and crisp with a good degree of powdery flour/semolina on the bottom, which is just how I like it. The spice level was just right. The price was pretty reasonable in my opinion. Wasn't a steal, but I didn't feel like I was over paying either. The only thing I would knock was how hot the interior was, but that's the price you pay for a pizzeria where you are never more than 12 feet from the oven. Can't wait to try more of their offerings. Reviewed this place around half a year ago after it took them 3+ hours to admit they don't know where our pizza went and told us to talk to their delivery service about getting the money back. They tried to make good on it by giving us a free pizza certificate that isn't good unless we walk into the place...after arguing with them for like an hour about why their delivery service's inability to deliver their pizza is their problem, not ours. We haven't ordered from there since, and against all odds this place just gave us exactly the same experience. 3+ hours until admitting they don't know where our pizza is. After a night of bar hopping I was headed back to my hotel for the night. On my walk I passed Upper Crust and figured this would be a great way to avoid any morning-after effects so I decided to pop into Upper Crust. The joint was relatively empty but the staff was busy making pies. I went with 2 slices of pepperoni which I enjoyed inside. The thin crust foldable pizza was great! From the cheese to the sauce and topping, all of the ingredients were flavorful and yummy. I was craving some pizza, I usually have a great experience at upper crust it's on of my go to spots; but tonight they were off their game. I ordered a sausage, pepper,&onion but they made me a sausage with pepperoni instead, i was hungry and didn't want to wait for another pizza to be made, I eat the one they made witch wasn't bad or that great. Besides that the dining room was filthy, who now wen the last time someone cleaned the soda fountain and tons of flys in the restaurant, class door covered in finger prints. I ordered it from Uber eats. Was still warm when it got here. The flavor was good but the pizza was soggy, thin and the ingredients were falling apart. The lady who took our order was one of the rudest people I've seen in the hospitality industry. When they brought the pizza there were no plates and when we asked for them he just pointed to the counter where they were stacked and walked away. The pizza was very good. I've waited 45+ minutes over the expected time for a pizza here recently, an elderly woman told me she had waited an hour and ten minutes! If this is not bad enough there is no one there that is able to effectively communicate what is happening... When we did get our pizza it what completely wrong and it didn't seem to really matter. We bought a Groupon to try this place since this location is so close to the Common, so we figured it'd be nice to have pizza out on the Common one of these days. We arrived, checked out the menu, and ordered our pizza to-go. While waiting for our pizza, we saw the delicious slices and pies that dine-in customers were devouring, and the aroma of the pizza was so good! It made us super hungry, and maybe that made the wait seem longer than it was? I wasn't keeping track of time, but two families came in, ordered, and finished eating before we got our to-go pizza, and it felt like about 40-50 minutes before we got ours. By that time, we were starving, so we just sat down and ate it right there. Alas, all the anticipation was met with disappointment. The pizza was limp, pooled with oil, just a little too salty, and had a bitter aftertaste because of the significantly burnt edges. I was thoroughly unimpressed. Two of us split a large pizza (which serves 3-4 according to them), but we were still hungry after eating the whole thing! I hate to admit it, but I'm a bit of a pizza snob. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and ate a LOT of pizza as a kid so I was exposed to everything from sub-standard to amazing pizza over the course of two decades. I like my pizza thin with either a chewy layer or a crispy crust. Sauce is important and of course anything else that winds up on top. I consider pizza an almost perfect food that can go super well or super super bad. Upper Crust Pizzaeria was my second pizza experience in Boston (I barely remember my first). It had a ton of people in it so that was a great sign. An even better sign was the "mom and pop" look of it. Wood everywhere, a menu written on a chalkboard and a table off to the side (near the area where you eat) where a cook works the pizza dough. It's fun for any foodie to watch. Upper Crust allows you to select from "premade" selections of toppings on your slice or pie from their massive list that includes clams, artichoke hearts, spinach and more. You can also select a regular dough or whole wheat. I ordered the "Slice of the Day" which included mushroom, basic, fresh mozzarella and spinach. The crust is super thin and crispy. It was wonderful, almost flatbread like but with a crisp. The sauce was tangy with a touch of sweetness. The cheese was salty and melted wonderfully while the veggie ingredients gave some wonderful flavor notes. Overall, it was a perfect slice in my book. I also have to say the slices are *gigantic*. Each slice easily equals two typical slices. The staff was really nice and efficient. They happily cut my slice in half and boy they churned out a lot of pies while I was there! When I think of 'gourmet' pizza, I think of Vito's in Los Angeles, and Harlan's in Hong Kong.... which are the only places on the planet I can think of as true to the word. In my opinion, truthfully, pizza shouldn't have to be 'gourmet' to sell. It's a nice attempt, but if you want something non-traditional, I'd rather just opt for California Pizza Kitchen. I prefer to classify Upper Crust as 'trendy' pizza. It's not bad, but not always consistent. The crust can sometimes be incredibly hard when it cools down, which I find amazing considering how thin it is. Beyond the crust, which I've never really been satisfied with, the toppings are actually pretty damn good. Lots of 'shi-shi' combinations that really do work, and they have what I consider a daily experiment special that always seems to work. One honorable mention, which surprises me, is their garden veggie pizza. I never eat this anywhere else, but at Upper Crust, if you're the veggie type, you can't go wrong. I still go occasionally, as there are few other good options in my section of the Backbay. read more

I've had Upper Crust before from their South End location and it was delicious. Ordered this time through DoorDash and was not happy! We ordered The Charles pizza- spinach, feta, and garlic- and a meatball calzone. After our driver waited an extra 15 mins for our order to be done the pizza arrived cold, burned, and without garlic or spinach. It was also dripping in grease. Upper Crust does have good pizza I will give it that, but their staff is not very kind and made fun of a customer who asked to use the bathroom as an emergency after they left. They told the woman it was broken after she proceeded to ask them where they use the restroom. She left upset and the staff just laughed and started making fun of her. Then, I the guy who was the cashier proceeded to go to the bathroom that was supposedly "broken". The entire staff had horrible attitude towards my friends and I even after ordering multiple slices as well as each person that came in after us. If the bathroom is only for employee use, say that.
