A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT While I do understand that this is move-in week for a lot of new students in the area, and that The Upper Crust probably received an unusual number of orders, I feel that what I experienced last night shouldn't go unnoticed. I placed an order as I usually do on the phone. It was about 8:40 pm. They told me my pizza and drinks would arrive in 45 minutes. An hour and a half later, it still had to arrive. I called, and no one picked up. After several attempts, someone picked up but left to do something else - a clear message that they were bothered by the phone ringing off the hook, and they had no interest in talking to anyone. Needless to say, my order was never delivered. Where in the world is "service" of this kind acceptable? The personnel at The Upper Crust is normally a little rough around the edges, but this is inadmissible. At least have the courtesy to call back to let me know that completing my order is not possible; it takes 20 seconds of your time, and you have a disappointed customer who will nonetheless return. But this behavior, so crass, rude, and downright unprofessional, should not be tolerated, especially when it's impossible to order anywhere else after 10 pm. Knowing how they are, the manager and personnel at The Upper Crust won't care that I'll never set foot in their South End location, or order delivery again. However, I thought other people might want to know about their lack of professionalism. read more

I am confused... This place only has 3 stars? I work across the street from this Upper Crust and often come in for a slice. This place by far is much cleaner than most pizza places and the people here are super friendly. I recently brought my boyfriend in to have a slice and he too, enjoyed this place. The spinach squares are really good and I LOVE that their tap beers are ice cold. What more can you ask for? read more

i grew up with upper crust as my favorite bougie pizza (that's not a local pizza shop) it was always memorable. I recently visited this spot super excited, i was craving a slice and some lasagna. pizza was soooo good! I had the veggie pizza, though I would say it could have been a little crispier. as an adult now, i realize that it is actually quite pricey compared to local pizza shops that are just as good and if not better. i went out of my way from dorchester to south end for this. 7/10 the lasagna was teeennnyyyy for the price... i expected the tin container to be full, i also added some salt and pepper to reach my liking 6/10 upper crust is good for a nice slice, but i'd rather go somewhere else more local read more

That's the last time I will get pizza from Upper Crust on Tremont Street! It was over-baked and dry with the edges burned. I tried pickup because the last time I got it delivered it was cold and needed to be re-heated. But that dried it out so much it was not edible. The pie I picked up today --just as it was coming out of the oven-- was just as bad! I have had this particular pizza, from another location, when it was not over-cooked and it was delicious. This Upper Crust location may have great tasting pizza but the delivery was ridiculous. I raved to my staff about Upper Crust and they told me to order it for lunch hour. I ordered online as early as I could and got an E-mail notification that it would arrive at 11:50am-noon which worked well for our noon-1pm lunch hour. The order did not arrive until 1:38pm and my colleagues were disappointed, gave up and bought their lunches elsewhere. This made me look bad and I missed a meeting and other work because of it. We ordered 3 pizzas for a family gathering and I really liked the Uncommon pizza, it's like a Hawaiian pizza with jalapeño peppers that really have a kick. Definitely get this if you like spicy foods! The delivery box was also cool, one side of the box could be torn into 4 little box, and you can fold the other side of the box into a compact little pizza OD to store any leftovers. read more

I always check yelp reviews before ordering. This time I didn't and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered two 14" pizzas, one was chorizo and another bbq chicken. It was just the way I like it! Thin crust, breaded chicken ( this was different usually I have seen grilled chicken on pizzas) and other pizza had very flavorful chorizo. They also have some seating inside and outdoors. I ordered a Pizza over the phone (with a girl) when I get here the guy says he never got my order in the first place. I called in there was a girl on the phone and he says no girl even works there. I said is this the right phone number the guy (cashier) is shocked that I did indeed call the number (he doesn't even know his own number). The guy than proceeds to apologize and I have to reorder. Also to make matters worse he says I gotta wait now another 30 minutes at least. After I waited a half an hour already. What service is this? Crap service. AND HE TOLD ME AFTER I ORDERED that it will be 30 minutes at least. To make matters worse I check in 15 minutes later on my pizzas to make sure they even are in and the guy says he hasn't even received my order (the chef). Came here for the first time and was a little disappointed. We got the vegetarian GOAT pizza to go. The crust was a little burnt so there was a slight bitter taste after every few bites. The description said it came with goat cheese and we didn't get any goat cheese on our pizza. Overall it was underwhelming, especially if you're going in craving pizza. read more

This is my favorite kind of pizza: super thin crust, lots of melty cheese, yummy creative toppings. Some more favorites: no wait! GIANT slices... And beer on tap, and wine. This review is based on multiple visits to this location, including delivery as well as pick up. I have to say I'm honestly surprised at the low ratings of other reviewers. I live close by and all my experiences at this restaurant have been nothing but pleasant. Hands down THE best pizza around; every one hand-made to order with fresh ingredients. And if you prefer you can even watch them make it from within the restaurant, although taste alone should be an indicator of the quality that this restaurant produces. Pizza aside it's the service that really keeps me a loyal customer. I can't tell you how many families I've seen tour this location that require special modifications to their pizza ( no chunks in the tomato sauce for picky children, slices cut smaller for convenience, gluten free for those who can't visit other restaurants) and the staff here complied willingly. I've never seen anyone turned down without reason. The environment is most definitely family friendly, not a bar like atmosphere although they still offer multiple large screen TVs (usually with the games showing) and a good variety of beer/wine if you wish to indulge with your slice of Za. For my lazy long days after work, Upper Crust does offer FREE delivery which is particularly rare within the confines of Boston. I've found that almost every order was delivered before the time given. The one instance they did arrive late was accompanied with a phone call, apology, and an offer for compensation although I declined. Overall, a few steps above any pizza you may come across at Reginas or Dominos. read more

Yum, yum! Why "yum, yum!" and only three stars? We've been ordering from here every now and again through work, and the issue is this: they don't start taking phone calls for orders until 11:30, and usually don't deliver until 12:45, which is kind of lame for a place that could be doing a lot more orders than they are. The pizzas are delicious, hot, and perfectly thin and tasty once you get them, so as long as you can wait if you want to order, you'll be happy that you did. The Upper Crust has some of the best pizza in Boston, and the service can be hit or miss, which also brings them down to three stars. I'll be honest -- I'm surprised to see this place has only a three-star average on Yelp. This place is a good neighborhood pizza shop. A large pizza is huge and easily feeds two people for dinner with enough for lunch for both of us the next day. I've been coming here a while and have picked up a few "tips": 1. The Harvard Street pizza is amazing. Fresh mozzarella, tomato slices, and fresh basil. Yum. 2. Don't do the "slice of the day." Don't get me wrong, they have some great deals and some interesting flavors, but we found that we enjoy the pizza much more when we order a full one, probably because it's made fresh to order. 3. Their salads are surprisingly good. 4. If you're doing takeout, it's not a bad place to grab a beer while you wait. The pizza's good and Mali, the manager, really takes care of his customers. AWFUL EXPERIENCE!!! Should be a zero. My girlfriend and I came here after purchasing a $10 for $20 groupon. We came in and sat at the bar top. Never being greeted or asked if we would like anything - we asked the girl behind the counter if we could order to the response of a grumpy person "Yeah." Only one other couple in the place (should have been a sign) but I noticed five employees. We placed our order and I began to observe. 1. Girl one eating her dinner at register. 2. Girl one taking pills at register. 3. Girl one having ridiculous conversation with male employee right in front of us. 4. Male employee pointing out misspelled flyer which was made in-house. Instead of fixing the flyer, he points it out and how the person who built was an idiot. Then points it out to remainder of staff. 5. Girl two eating behind register. 6. Girl two handing us our salad after I've watched her eat 7 feet from me. 7. My girlfriend ask girl one politely for another fork, and girl one juts her head in the direction of the condiment station saying, "There should be some over there." I got up to get it for her and watched girl one and the male employee, who haven't done a lick of work in the 10 minutes we sat there, roll their eyes and smirk at each other. That was the final straw. We got up, left and asked for the manager's name (told us Marcus but looked it up when we got home and his actual name is Brian) on the way out. I ordered from The Upper crust before reading any of the reviews....and I have to say, I'm so glad I did!! I might have changed my mind if I had listened to everyone else. I am GF, and I ordered one with bacon, pineapple and jalapeños plus I added grilled chicken. The toppings were plentiful, it was crispy on the edges, and just the right thickness!! I babysit a girl in the sound end and stopped in here for a quick bite. A drunk homeless man followed us in. He stood awfully close to me while I was ordering. I didn't want to scare the child I was babysitting to be scared so I tried to remain calm and firm with him. I had to ask him multiple times to not sit at our table, and received very little help from the staff. When our pizza was brought to us, he looked at it like a hungry fiend, and you know what they did to fix this? No, they didn't ask him to leave. Not once. They gave him a slice of pizza for free. Encouraging his drunk trashy ass to stay, in an atmosphere where there were families with children. When I went up to inquire about the ranch dressing and soda that I'd ordered and still hadn't received, I told the young man behind the counter that the homeless man was bothering me. He LAUGHED. HE FUCKING LAUGHED. I am literally sick to my stomach just remembering this experience. Try explaining this to a kid who isn't yours, who wants to know why the man fell, why he was there, why I asked him to leave us alone, why the man was mean. I tried the Upper Crust in April and really disliked it. I was surprised because I remember having enjoyed it in the past. I thought to myself maybe this is an isolated incident. After all, I did come in after 1:00pm, of course I was going to get the leftover lunch slices. So today I really felt like a slice. I recalled how awful my last experience was and decided to give Upper Crust another shot, this time before noon. The restaurant is dirty. It looked like they closed the doors last night and went home. There was a foul odor coming from the back room/pizza box storage area. It smelled like moldy rotting wood. This place sucks now. Sorry. If you've read the newspaper with any regularity, you've heard about some of their appalling business practices and corporate infighting. Seems this has trickled down to the quality of their pies as well. The last two times I've ordered a cheese pizza, it was so soggy and under cooked that I had to put it in my own oven for it to be edible. Deadly serious, you couldn't even fold a slice in half in order to eat it without it drooping like a limp...wrist. And guess what? If you can't get a cheese pie right, you can't get anything right. Pizza at this location is pretty consistent for the chain but the service here knocked my socks off today. I ordered the slice of the day...Italian sausage, caramelized onions and banana peppers, YUM!...and was told it would be a 3-5 minute wait since they had to make a fresh one. No big deal as any excuse to be indoors out of the oppressive heat for a bit longer was more than welcomed. I parked at the bar under the most vigorous air conditioning vent and sipped my water. After about 5 minutes of near-frozen bliss the waitress came over and said it would be about another 2 minutes and then apologized profusely for the extra wait. Seriously, it took TWO minutes extra...big deal...I would not have even noticed. She said that because the time was longer than she originally told me I could have a free soft drink. I thought that was extremely thoughtful and it is the type of service one rarely experiences these days. I have been to much more expensive places that didn't have half the courtesy of this Upper Crust location. This is the BEST pizza in Boston!! They do special pizzas of the MONTH and of the DAY so there's always NEW delicious creative combinations to try. The staff is the friendliest and most helpful I've seen in a long time. MALI, the manager is super cool. The crunchy thin crust is very tasty and the tomato sauce is some of the best I've ever had. If you like thick pizza, you won't be pleased here, but you'll get over it. Most of my neighbors were happy that Upper Crust finally made it to the 'hood. Even better that they turned an under-used storefront into a local hotspot. I would order takeout vs. eat-in; they haven't seemed to figure out how to turn their exhaust fans on. Or, you'll freeze to death when the open the doors to air out the place. I find the pizza to be consistent, regardless of location. They deliver, as do the other branches. I feel guilty for going to Upper Crust because I like Nicole's Pizza as well. When I ordered delivery the pleasant person indicated it would take 60-80mins as they were very busy. No problem, I say - expectaions set!. Pizza arrived in 50mins and still pretty warm despite the teen temps (10 secs in the 'wave took care of each slice). Great! As far as the quality goes, I thought it was excellent. I had chorizo & roni this time, but have had the BBQ in the past - very good, BTW. The large was huge, which it should be given the $19 price. This is where the issue of value comes into play. Almots $20 for a large 2 topping pizza seems a bit high. I've had $13 pizzas in Boston that are just as good if not better. Regardless, a dcent experience and a good pie. read more

I have never ordered delivery, so I can't comment on that experience. These folks are always cool so we make a point of walking to the counter to get a slice. However, last night was so awesome I feel compelled to rave. We are hosting international guests and after a day of sightseeing we were more tired than hungry so a quick slice was just the ticket. We all ordered the slice of the day, which had breaded eggplant on it. While we were waiting the employee came over to us and ASKED if we wanted our slices right away or if we wanted to wait for the fresh pizza which would be just a few minutes longer. I confided that we were hoping to impress our guests and so we would wait. I'm so glad we did! The pizza was perfect - the friends have spent a lot of time in Italy and were very happy with the crust. The eggplant was both novel and tasty, I will definitely order that again and they were impressed by how it was prepared. But by far above and beyond was our server's sincere concern that we have a great experience. He perfectly walked the line between inobtrusive and solicitous. Awful! Ordered from them roughly 6 times. Never again. Serious problems 3 out of 6 times. First time, we ended up with meat on a veg pizza. (I was, however, impressed by how the manager handled it). Second time, ordered two pizzas, both arrived ice cold and 1 with no sauce (huh?). Third time, one pizza arrived burnt. (the bottom of the thing looked like a vinyl record - black. it also tasted a lot like I imaging a record would taste). IMHO, if you're going to try to define yourself as a gourmet pizza joint, professing to be a cut above the rest, and you charge accordingly, and if you consistently fail in delivering even the most basic standards of quality, then i'm sorry to say, but you're a sham. read more

I still really like their pizza, but I have to knock them down a star for the way they treated one of my friends. My friend and I went during lunch at work. We ordered some slices and PBRs. They demanded to see our IDs. I had mine. My friend, who is very obviously in his late 50s, did not have his and they would not serve him beer b/c he had no ID. I mean, I can understand if someone looks young, but we are talking about someone who is CLEARLY over 21, 31, 41. IMO, that is just rude. read more

Quality is consistent and on-par with the other locations. If it's one thing I appreciate it is a pizza place that is consistent. Eating in the dining area of this location is considerably better than their train-wreck of a location on Newbury Street. But it is still very noisy and busy. The pizza's ingredients have a level of quality that you can taste particularly with the vegetables. The chunky sauce has just the right amount of sweet and tastes like real tomatoes. I feel the Garden Vegetable and Harvard Street pizza best exemplify the quality of the Upper Crust. Mmm, fresh veggies on pizza. Absolutely terrible. The staff was nice and and the service was quick, but the pizza was unbelievably bad. Maybe it was my mistake, in my attempts to be healthy, to order the Four Cheese slice made with wheat, but I really doubt it. The slice had NO crust or bottom at all. It was like the sauce + cheese had hardened so much that they figured they could forgo the dough all together. It is hard to believe that I have lived in Boston for almost 5 years and just tried Upper Crust for the first time yesterday. I have to say that I was pretty impressed with the pizza. I live in the North end where there certainly isn't a shortage of pizzeria's and I would pick Upper Crust over the majority. We had a spinach and cheese pizza, and a veggie. Super flavorful, nice crust, not too greasy or soggy. There was outside seating at the South End location and they serve beer! Yay! read more

DO NOT order delivery. maybe this place is better dining in, but it was horrible when it arrived. everything we ordered came ICE COLD. we had a pizza and the beef lasagna, both tasted like they had been sitting out all night. also - do NOT bother with whole wheat. tasted like cardboard. i would give them 1 star, but the lasagna was not bad. we had to microwave it a bit, but it was the only thing edible and luckily it was satisfying enough. read more
