Uproot was an absolutely pleasant surprise for us. We went with a couple of friends who have also eaten in exclusive places in Manhattan, and we all agreed Uproot was outstanding in their new iteration. Apparently they started as a high end place and recently changed their menu to a more eclectic one. After a couple of nice cocktals, we started with the pot stickers and split the rock shrimp tacos, which are not traditional tacos but were actually delicious. The tuna, hanger steak and the stir-fry (PLEASE get the Gen Tso Cauliflower one) were all delicious. Finally, we got the donuts for dessert. Although the Chocolate Bomb and other dessert options looked amazing, we devoured the 3 oversized donuts served with a caramel.mocha sauce. They were amazing. If you are a foodie purist, who shuns eclectic menus with pizza and tacos along with "traditional" entrees, this may not be the place for you which is too bad. Otherwise, Uproot is worth the extra driving time to this hidden jewel in Warren. I look forward to going back and trying their pizzas!!! read more

My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We made reservations for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. We arrived at 7:15 and we were seated right away. The food was amazing. All of the ingredients were super fresh and the presentation was beautiful. For appetizers, we ordered the Maker's Mark wings and carne asada tacos. Four our meals, I got the tuna tostada small plate and salmon poke bowl. My husband got the burger, which he said was quite possibly the best burger he's ever had. For dessert, we got the chocolate cake w/ coffee ice cream. We normally would not order that much food, but splurged for our anniversary and it was so worth it! I'm not sure if they do special desserts for anniversaries/birthdays, but when we made the reservation we did tell them that we were celebrating and they didn't acknowledge it in any way. We came here after a movie for a mid-evening dinner. This is a relatively large, cavernous space, with almost three different dining areas (adjacent to the bar area, in a room around the corner, and a large cathedral ceiling space adjacent to this last one. It also has a bar area with bar tables and other seating. So, there are a lot of tables, and as such, I think the design and space is underwhelming. On the other hand, we really enjoyed the quality of the food. On this night, we opted simply for a short rib sandwich and blue cheese burger, but they were prepared very well and presented equally well. The service and attentiveness were very good; even the manager came over to inquire how everything was. So, four stars for food and service, but only maybe a two and a half for interior design and atmosphere. They have a pretty diverse menu from one of the best burgers you'll ever eat to great appraisers. Try their Jim Bean buffalo sauced chicken wings, they might be the best wings I've had ever. The sauce is amazing and its a very meaty wings. The menu also includes personal pizzas, pastas, and various entrees, all of which i have tried were excellent. They also have a very cool drink menu. The drinks are presented well with one giants sphere shaped ice cube which makes them look pretty cool. One thing I find wrong with Uproot is the serving staff wears jeans and black shirts which often makes the clientele more dressed up then the server since this is a fairly nice restaurant. For the quality of the food and the price I feel that the wait staff should dress a little better. Otherwise, the staff here is very helpful and nice. read more

Outstanding in every way. Enjoyed the ambiance. Hip and trendy without trying too hard. Specialty cocktails were interesting and tasty. Service was on point. Food was absolutely fantastic. Table of 4 shared the kimchi tater tots which sounded weird to me but were a delicious blend of flavors and textures with just enough kick. We also had the buffalo cauliflower and the country ham & fig, both of which were fantastic. For entrees, two of us had the stir fried rice (one with chicken, one with shrimp), one had the roasted chicken and one had the fish tacos. Everything was absolutely delicious and portion sizes were perfect. I avoid both gluten and dairy. I was happy to see several items on the menu identified as gluten free. For dessert there is a gluten free brown but it is served with ice cream. Upon hearing my dilemma, our server offered to substitute sorbet which was perfect. If you don't do dessert, make sure to finish off your meal with either the house made Irish cream or the espresso or Nutella martini. Oh my! A great experience and close to home. I want to get my only complaint out of the way right here and say it was a little difficult to find this restaurant, but besides that, this experience was amazing! The building is very cool, modern designing, with an earthy tone that makes you feel at home and warm. Seems like a hot spot on the weekends. My girlfriend and I went out for her birthday here and were very excited to sit down and enjoy our meal. We started with her favorite steamed shrimp dumplings that came out flawlessly and left us wanting more and fighting for the last one because there were five! Because it was her birthday, the chef sent out an on-the-house mid-course of their duck special that night. This needed to be on the menu because the duck breast was superb. Gnocchi, a bed of greens, and crispy juicy duck blended perfectly together; I had to tell myself to eat it slowly so I could enjoy it longer. We took a turn then with our entrees and ordered a burger and their shrimp Poi Boy. I can't tell you much about the burger because I was so focused on my Poi Boy. It was amazing! The sauce! I couldn't get over how good this sauce was. We ate everything and were extremely satisfied with the night. The entire time we were there we felt very taken care of by our servers and back waiters, even the general manager came by to chat with us for a bit as he made his rounds. Very professional staff, quick and knowledgeable, the owners should be proud of their wait staff. Amazing place, it's in my book of restaurants to return to, and I highly recommend it. read more

Oh well, the BEST BURGER didn't last. They slipped. Our last order was extremely well done, when we order medium rare, the portion was smaller than the last time and it looks like the quality went south as well unless their butcher in Scotch Plains sent a bad batch, it just didn't seem like before. Not from around here, but happily stumbled upon this place. It's a modern atmosphere and definitely surprising since it's located in a shopping mall type area. Buffalo cauliflower is definitely delicious. The cauliflower was crisp and the sauce not too overbearing. But otherwise you can sit at one of the high top tables if you don't have a reservation... We had the shrimp potstickers... You get four tiny ones for $10. But also 10$ for a thin glass with lots of ice in it....We had a hanger steak which was basically beef tips and not a steak and stirfry with chicken but it was very very very salty... Uproot is without a doubt one of THE best dining experiences I've enjoyed. They get everything right, from ambiance to service. +Ambiance Modern American vibe. Clean and neat, Uproot is dimly lit and sets a nice, intimate setting for a dinner. +Drinks/cocktails Uproot has a fantastic choice of beverages to enjoy. My wife got the "Smokey Q," which has a Mezcal and jalapeño syrup base with cucumber and lime. It was smokey and delicious. I got the Barrell-aged Negroni, which was also delicious. Mixed perfectly. +Appetizer We split the steamed pork buns with pickled onions and a queso fresco aioli which were among the best I've ever had. Cooked perfectly, with a great texture for the pork, everything was spot-on. +Entree I got the stir fried rice with steak as my choice of meat (you can choose chicken or shrimp as well). Mixed in were carrots and snap peas in a nice Thai sauce that wasn't too strong at all. This was a SOLID portion size, and I barely finished, but the taste was great. +Dessert We split the fruit cobbler with vanilla ice cream, and that was great. Delicious! The vanilla bean makers mark wings were phenomenal! Spicy with a hint of sweetness. I had a scallop risotto special which was super tasty and the scallops were perfectly cooked. Hubble has the seafood stew with a fancy name sancocho I think.. also yummy. We took food home to leave room for dessert. We ordered the brownie with caramalized popcorn and pretzels... terrible. I would have given 5 stars but the dessert wasn't that good. It was two silver dollar size brownies (similar to the brownie bites in the box) they were cold and dry and nothing to write home about. The ice cream was homemade and yummy but there were two pieces of popcorn on the plate (two popped kernels) and two pretzels that were straight out a herrs bag the square ones that look like tictactoe boards. Uproot - it's actually a very interesting type of place. It's located right in downtown Warren in between a bunch of different strip malls. It's a pretty big place once inside. When you enter, you walk right into the bar area and to get to the dining area, you have to walk through the bar. I'd classify this place as trendy and chic with a bit of an upscale vibe. It's relatively dark inside and the service is pretty good. They have an extensive drink menu and about 8 or so beers on tap. They really don't have any of your standard "domestic lights" on tap. It's mostly higher end beers and microbrews. I tried the Saranac Pumpkin Ale and the Leinenkugel Octoberfest on my most recent visit - both on tap. I actually hadn't tried either of those beers and they were both very good. I'd order either of them again. My wife and I were seated in the dining area and the menu is relatively simple and straightforward. They have some apps, salads, sandwiches and some entrees. We didn't start out with an app, but we both went with salads for our entree. My wife ordered the Greek salad and I had the Cobb salad. I added chicken to the salad. My Cobb salad was actually very good - every single ingredient that came on the salad was incredibly fresh. The chicken was freshly cooked and the salad was served with a very good ranch dressing. My wife enjoyed her's, as well. I actually really like this place - it's a little more high end and pricey than the average restaurant in the area but Uproot has a great bar and some pretty good food. I'm actually looking forward to trying a burger on my next visit. We may even opt to eat in the bar area the next time around. We'll definitely be back. read more

We were seated immediately, but the restaurant was still packed at 9pm. Love the modern décor and the high ceilings. Given the amazing atmosphere, I would think the place was very expensive - only to find that I was wrong. Prices are very reasonable and the menu had overall great selections. Went to Uproot with a hand full of colleagues for a casual drinking event after work. The ambiance of the restaurant is good and inviting. The apps that we ordered were good. Few apps I would suggest would be ( buffalo broccoli bites, guac and chips, and their pizza). Also, great drink selections for those who are picky with what they drink. Husband tried the wedge salad because I convinced him, remember that "Modern Family" episode where Clare thinks she discovered it? Ha, that's me. Ordered a small portion of pasta - Rigatoni with fried eggplant topped with ricotta pesto. Eggplant nicely cooked. Sauce was delish, albeit rich! Husband had shrimp skewer (note: 6 small shrimp) with fried brown rice - tasty because they added scallions, snap peas, broccoli. ginger, water chestnuts, and chopped peanuts. A really solid side. Atmosphere is California élan - dark wood, plexiglass, mirrored backdrop bar, serene but with a good amount of TVs tuned to sports. Love the padded houndstooth bar stools. Really, really delicious. It's one of those places where the plating is as good as the online photos and tastes even better. Great portions, fresh ingredients, fantastic flavor combinations. The fresh mozzarella, honey roasted tomatoes and marinated broccoli rabe appetizer was even better than described and the doughnut dessert with mocha Creme and salted caramel was unreal. My steak chimicurri was expertly cooked and sliced. Decor created a really relaxing but upscale atmosphere. Unique and well-made cocktails too. Will definitely return! read more

The decor is interesting with a mix of styles and furniture, some seem to be country style while other elements are 50's retro. Make sure you check out the tall RED family style table. There is a fireplace and lounge style seating in the bar area. Decor gets 4 stars. The menu was smaller than I expected having only about 20 items total. Nonetheless, my wife and I both found plenty. I suspect they keep a small menu and update it. My wife and I had the following: Ricotta gnocchi, heirloom pear salad, carrot and apple soup, mahi mahi with grilled bok choy and pork tenderloin. We finished with a cheese plate and the "uproot twinkie" (carrot cake) and the "cheese cake". All of the food was well executed, presentation and plating were up to the highest standards and everything tasted good, but some items lacked the flavor complexity you would expect at this price point. The staff were very attentive but seemed a little stiff. They all had good knowledge of menu items, wine etc, they just seemed a little too stiff for a place with a giant red table. Maybe they just need to find their groove... Overall, we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Uproot missed the 5 star rating because of the discrepancies in price and flavor complexity. Went here last night, actually against my better judgement...with gems describing the staff on their website like "has accumulated a range of experience broader and farther reaching than most individuals his age.", I was concerned that the place was going to be a hipstery mess of upscale disaster. That was only partially true. Uproot is definitely trying to be more upscale than the area can really support (As evidenced by late hours for supper, and an empty restaurant at 8 pm). The feel is more like a place you'd expect to find on the upper east side - the decor is nice if a bit disjointed. The staff is excellent. It's clear they've been trained in the "we are trying to be upscale" methodology that the place encompasses in every bit of it's existence. They are friendly, OVERLY polite, and very attentive (though it probably helped that we were one of maybe 4 tables eating at that hour). The menu is a little disappointing in that it has a serious lack of vegetarian options beyond "salad". Thankfully my wife is a fish eating vegetarian, so there were plenty of options for her. The food: 1. Vietnamese steamed buns - yes. Eat them. Eat them over and over. The serving size is 2 pieces, and I would have eaten 10 more of them. The pork belly is cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of daikon and hoisin to round it out beautifully. I would stop in just for these, no problem. 2. The tuna duo - A little less successful than the buns, but still quite good. Sliced seared tuna with sesame crusting, and a spicy tuna mash served in fried tortilla chips. The spicy tuna things were great - the seared tuna was just okay and would have done better with the addition of either a sauce of some kind or at least a hint of salt prior to searing. 3. Thai salad - mix of cabbage, fried cheese sticks, roasted crushed peanuts, apples, and a spicy thai dressing. So...the fried cheese is exactly what it sounds like. It's little mozzarella sticks tossed on the salad. Surprisingly went nicely to offset the cabbage/apple flavors. Didn't really note any dressing on the salad at all, so can't comment about the spice factor, but thankfully there's enough items in there that it didn't need the extra flavor anyway. Added the side of general tso's cauliflower and it was FANTASTIC (note: I normally HATE cauliflower, but I would absolutely eat this again) 4. Shrimp dumplings - scallions and a spicy ginger glaze - very delicate, small size dumplings, delicious...though in retrospect they did have a bit of an odd aftertaste (the way food sometimes does if it's been cooked over a gas grill for example) - but again, at the time very enjoyable and would likely order again 5. Cinnamon and sugar donuts - you're an idiot if you don't get them. Freshly prepared donuts with a salted caramel/mocha dipping sauce. EXCELLENT. Be aware that there are three full sized donuts here, so save some room or be prepared to share. Had there been more, I would have seriously taken the sauce and drank it. They also have a rather unique drink menu, and we sampled a few of them...with my favorite being the "made from scratch" - Cana Brava Rum, Apple Cider, Tuaca, Egg White, Lime Juice, Cinnamon Syrup. Definitely on the sweet side, but very good...a little smaller than I'd normally expect for a 9+ dollar cocktail, but well made and the bartenders clearly know what they're doing. Overall I'll absolutely eat here again. All the food above, plus 4 cocktails, plus two coffees with amaretto and the tab was around $150 including a good tip...so maybe a little pricey for the amount of food served (item 1 was 2 buns, tuna duo was 4 spicy tuna chips and 4 small slices, salad was plenty for two, shrimp dumplings were 4 small dumplings)...on the other hand, 3 full sized donuts for dessert was an unexpected bonus. This will definitely not be a nightly stop, but would absolutely return for special occasions. read more

Left the valley the other day to visit this mountain top resturant. Living in Bound Brook these days, I am not so familiar with Warren and the food it hosts. My first trip to Warren was crowned by Uproots. Walking into the resturant you get an earthy vibe right away. The door is on the left so don't get confused by the decor. I think they went for a feeling of entering a hip urban tree and they definitely nailed it on the head. Upon entering the decorations are impressive. The modern hip feel you receive from entering is uplifting, fun and relaxing. There are many pictures on Yelp that show the decor so please do take a gander. The food: The menu is what brought me here. There is something for everyone, and everything looks delicious and accurately priced. My boyfriend and I shared the wings. They use makers mark and another sauce I can not remember but it was finger licking good. Crispy but not overcooked. Perfection. Just wish they gave me a wet nap because I felt like a monster tearing through those wings in my high heels and dress. We both ordered burgers next on pretzel buns since my boyfriend is allergic to sesame seeds (and everything else in the world). The buns were not that pretzly if you know what I mean. Looked the part but did not taste. The burgers were also thick. I never understood why restaurants do this. The meat is locally sourced but sometimes less is more as in less means I can actually fit it into my mouth. When burgers are thick like this they are typically less moist and this was the case that day. The toppings to choose from are impressive as my boyfriend got onion rings on his burger and I got pork belly. We also got truffle fries in which the seasoning was yummy but the fries were actually a little overcooked. They were so crisp that they were almost burnt. I embarrassingly still ate all of them and took the burger home to eat later. Drinks: My boyfriend got a wisky ginger and I got a jalapeno cocktail. He enjoyed his but mine was honestly too spicy. I ended up not drinking it because I couldn't. The balance was totally off and I know since I am a spice lover. I meant to get their angry orchard cocktail but ended up changing my mind last minute. Service: Amazing. Someone is always coming around to pour water into your tiny glass. Your waiter is always on top of things and so friendly. I honestly think it was just an off day and we may have not ordered the best entrees and drinks. Still appetizing and cool since they pack up your meal and you pick it up with a ticket on the way out. 5 star food in NJ!!! I went to Uproot for the first time for my sister-in-law's birthday. We sat in the private room in the back which is a very nice spot for a small event. We chose Uproot because we saw that the chef had visited James Beard House and we rarely see NJ chefs featured there. Since it was a group of 10 people, we had a pre-fix menu with limited but very good choices. I started with scallops which were very tasty and perfectly cooked. My wife had mushroom parpadelle pasta which was another solid dish - lots of mushrooms and great flavor. The next course was salad and it took a very very long time for it to be served like 45 minutes. This was quite surprising since no one else was dining in the entire restaurant and they got one of the orders incorrect. I had the pear salad with brie - the serving was surprisingly large and it was another winning dish. I feel like many restaurants overdress the salad but at Uproot this wasn't the case. For main course, I had duck served medium and it was perfectly cooked and had lots of rich flavor. Overall, I believe that the restaurant scores 5 stars for food. Every single dish was solid and there wasn't a misstep in any dish that I tasted during the evening which is rare for any restaurant IMO. The food surpassed my expectations and I'm looking forward to returning. I took off a star for uneven service but I would think the service will improve over time. I just wonder if they can handle a packed house on a Friday/Saturday night. We went on a Monday and were the only diners. The service was very attentive from 3 servers since we were the only ones there; however they did mess up a couple of orders and the service time was slow between the first and second course. On a positive note the staff was friendly and corrected all the missteps quickly and professionally. Great food in a great atmosphere. Very accommodating and the staff has been there for a while, that says something. Salmon club, sea bass, and donuts all great. Pizza nice and thin, burgers really good. My wife and I go there at least once a week, and I don't always get the same thing, it's that kind of Place. read more
