I love this place-albeit grudgingly! Initially I was pretty bummed the owners decided to close their 'wildly successful' VB Chocolate Bar to replace it with what I considered to be a coffee shop for new-age hippies. If you ever tried their dessert martinis and the bourbon chocolate chip cookie with boozy ice-cream you'd know why I was feeling salty. The staff are awesome and so are the quiche and specialty coffees. A group of friends and I go there nearly every week for breakfast. I love that we can reserve the conference room through their Facebook page in advance of our visit. As a mom of two toddlers it's nice being able to contain them and still let them walk around- there is a TV on the wall so they can watch cartoons while I enjoy my much needed coffee and companionship. I went VB Chocolate Bar with 7 friends at 6 p.m. on Saturday. There were only some consumers, so we could get chairs for us outside the bar. There are many chairs and some fire pits outside, and there are some tables inside. They have good environment and good mood. Around 8 p.m., their tables and chairs became almost completely full. I ordered Chocolate Martini with caramel pretzels at first, and that was great, amazing, and very delicious! It was actually sweet, but the ardent spirits in it made it great and clear my tongue just after I drank it. It is so delicious that I couldn't avoid a sense of crisis about getting dead drunk. They have 7 kinds of Chocolate Martini, so I strongly recommend you to get it. After Martini, I ordered affogato and root beer float as well, and both of them are delicious!! I've been looking for a coffee shop to call home in this area for a month now and his is going to be it - I'm pretty sure. The staff was so kind and helpful. Their ice cream that I tasted was so good I could only think of non-PG descriptions. (Particularly the Salted Peanut Butter Chip. Although the Iced coffee+bourbon+cocoa nib was also great.) Ok so first time locking my keys in my car. My phone was in there as well. Went back in & asked the staff to call a taxi. That didn't work. The staff looked at each other & then offered to drive me home. Got my keys & travelled back. I live approx 5 miles or so away so this wasn't down the street. Extremely grateful. Loved this place. Cute. Off the beaten path. BEST EVER HOT CHOCOLATE! My goodness it was delicious. I went last Wednesday night around 9:30-close and it was packed out. Every single seat inside and outside by the firepit was taken. We ended up sharing a table with some nice strangers. The atmosphere was good. I definitely want to come check it out again to see if it's as packed. The vibe seemed off from the reviews due to the sheer amount of people that were present. It seemed more like a boutique coffee shop in a ritzy hotel. Which in itself isn't a bad thing, just not the homey/hipster vibe I was hoping for. I also tried the homemade salted caramel chocolate and it was so tasty. Soft. Chewy. Rich. It was definitely worth the buck and a quarter for a tiny taste. I will definitely be back. My entire family loved coming here when this was Van Buskirk's Chocolate Bar; we would meet up with friends and tell everyone to come out for the full service bar and the outer patio with fireplaces. The pastries and artisinal chocolates were always delicious. Van Buskirk's artistry was second to none, and the ambience was so cosy and unique, especially for a suburban coffee house. Now, it's changed to Upshot, which is fine--the coffee is still top-notch and more healthful food offerings (bone broth) are welcome, even if we do miss all the chocolate concoctions (they still have awesome pastry). We miss the bar! The new decor is bright, modern, and new bars line the wall for more individual seating (though the long bars along the walls don't really allow for setting up a laptop next to your coffee and pastry). The thing I am most disappointed in, however, are the limited hours; this coffee house went from being a must-visit after-school and after-work treat and evening meet-up place to "grab a coffee IF you're here during work hours." I wish they'd open back up for evenings and longer hours on weekends for evening hangout/visits. The staff is always super nice, and again, the coffee is some of the best roast you'll get West of STL and Kaldi's/Picasso's. We came to grab some coffee here before visiting my friends new house in the area. We were unsure where to park so we parked on the street. We were also confused because the internet referred to VB chocolates I assume upshot took over. We didn't notice a back entrance so we had to walk around to the front. There were multiple entrances, but there is one main entrance. I had to go up to the front of the cashier to find a menu and then I found a separate menu a few feet away. The baristas didn't seem to engage until we ordered. Overall, it was a confusing experience. We ordered a hot chocolate and an oatmeal cookie latte. The latte was awful. It was overpowered with cinnamon and chai and $5! It did not taste like anything listed in the ingredients. The hot chocolate was pretty solid and I was pleased. They also sell juices and bone broth which is pretty cool. The place has some nice space to study or do work. I am not sure what to think of the place yet, but I will definitely be back to see if it was an off day or if my first experience is consistent. read more

Their parking lot has the electric arms but it raises without you having to take a ticket. I would think the employee would let you know how their lot works. I had to put $5 in so I could leave. Let me start with the building. A quaint aesthetically pleasing building which holds inside a monster named the everything bagel sandwich. I walked bright-eyed and bushy tailed ready for a quick breakfast snack and was EXCITED to see an everything bagel. I love everything bagels. Because. They. Have. Everything. Little did I know, that when Upshot said everything. They. Meant. Everything. When the sandwich was brought to our table my eyes widened with a mixture of excitement and terror. I marveled at the beast in front of me, a tower of sauces, meats, micro greens, and an egg. I questioned my life decisions and wondered what plight I have gotten myself into. I attempted to dig with my hands, a grievous mistake to say the least. A mixture of hollandaise sauce and egg yolk oozed out, an ominous omen of the beast who's lair I walked into like a naive boy. I opted to switch to utensils, a first for a bagel in my lifetime. Though, one set was simply not enough hardware to handle this delicious devil. I needed a second set to keep everything in place while I segmented my enemy into manageable pieces. Half way through my perilous journey my spirits began to waver. I sat there, rethinking my life decisions and engraving the lesson to read the menu fully before ordering deep inside my mind. I had resigned myself to defeat until Connor, like an angel from above, gave a rallying cry, reminding me of my Florida man heritage. I could, and WOULD conquer this delicious arch nemesis of mine. I buckled in, took a sip of my matcha tonic, and continued my fight with the beast. After my triumph, not only was my heart filled with pride, but my stomach filled with sustenance. 10/10 would recommend this spiritual awakening again. read more

I really enjoyed my visit here! I was wanting something sweet and my friend recommended this place. Fun atmosphere with good dessert and coffee drinks. They have a whole variety of different drinks and you can also add alcohol in your coffee. Their is outside and indoor seating but being this cold we got a spot inside. It is a small place but worth the wait. They have good music playing and a good place to have a friend get together. I ended up getting the Gooey Butter Cake and Brownie Cheesecake with mocha coffee. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! The portions of the drink and desserts were enough for couple people to share which is what I did. I love everything here. Seriously everything. I've tried most of their desert martinis, cheesecake, wines, chocolate... I'm always happy. This past weekend a friend and I sat outside and got the tomato basil flatbread pizza and it was fantastic. Everyone who works here is super friendly. It's kinda hipster-ish, but not pretentious. I really love coming here in the summer on Friday and Saturday nights. Great atmosphere with the music, fire pits, comfy and cozy seating... One of my favs! Love this place and what they offer but they need some serious work on training the staff (or hiring experienced people). I've had numerous orders that were incorrect or where items were omitted (via Door Dash), They made it right after a phone call, but at a big inconvenience with regards to timeliness when expecting an order. Went in person last Saturday morning and had to wait almost 30 minutes for 2 black coffees to go. This seems excessive! This is my go to coffee place before/after school during the semester but the last time I went was very upsetting. They got rid of their free parking in the lot next to them, and no sign was posted. So after paying $6 for my coffee I had to pay another $5 to leave the lot when they could have posted a sign to let customers know they had to pay to park.
