I love going to the Rockville Uptown Cheapskate. They make selling and shopping so easy. Whenever I want to sell anything I just drop off my stuff and come back later in the day. No need to sit around. I love that I get 25% extra for store credit. Whenever I'm shopping there I always find something to match my style. Everything is organized by genre, size, and color which makes it super helpful if I'm looking for something specific. They regularly have discount days which makes the already discounted items even cheaper. And if you come in during your birthday month you get an extra 15% off. I love that shopping second hand creates less waste than buying new. It's worth checking out! read more

I go to a lot of thrift stores - from really cheap ones to more expensive ones. I was pleasantly surprised with Uptown Cheapskate because it had a good mix of both. Some pieces were a bit overpriced and there were great deals on others. I also sold them some used clothing to sell and felt like the money they paid me was fair. SELLER review: Got $122 in cash for 30 items. Would have been 25% more (~$152) if I took store credit, but since I am really trying to minimize my shopping and closet size, the store credit would have been useless for me. I had a chance to walk around the store in the 45 min it took for them to assess my pieces, and although the store was quite clean and organized, I didn't find any pieces that I was interested in in my size. I also found the racks to be so tightly packed in some areas that it was a hindrance to go through them. Like other seller reviews have mentioned, it's quite hard to tell what will be taken and what won't be. A lot of my like-new free people stuff wasn't taken, despite the fact that the same shirt in a different color and size was already on their racks. For the most part, they seem to prioritize items that still have tags (they took 4/5 tagged items). Conveniently, they also have a donation service for the clothing they decide not to stock, and they let you look through the rejects first to decide what you'd rather keep vs. what you're willing to let go via donation. The employees working at the store were not particularly friendly, but not unpleasant either. Just very straightforward. I was pretty satisfied with the price for my situation. I have a Poshmark that I have made $1.5k net profit from selling my family's unwanted items in the past half year, but selling on your own can be time consuming. Many of the items I sold to Uptown were items I was not able to sell on Poshmark after being listed for months. It was a convenient way for me to get rid of items that wouldn't sell on Poshmark/The RealReal and still get a little bit of money back. Overall, I would recommend this as a second to last resort for getting rid of clothing, with the last resort being Goodwill/donation and the first being Poshmark/The RealReal/higher return consignment. read more

**Seller Review** I enjoy shopping here, so I was really hoping the negative seller reviews weren't true, but (super) unfortunately they are. I am looking to downsize and was kicking myself for buying so many things that I have worn once/not at all and things that were already way too tight when I bought them, but still got anyway for "some day" (lol). I brought in a bag of 11 dresses (Forever 21, Bebe, Guess, Pretty Little Thing, Tobi, American Apparel) with a range I was willing to give them up for in mind. After a quick 20 minute wait while browsing through the store, they were ready for me. Out off the 11 dresses... they wanted TWO. Horrifyingly - and almost offensively - they offered me FIVE DOLLARS for both pieces together. The tags said they totaled $60. I promptly collected my things and left. I have bought similar items at Uptown priced between $10 to $15, so there's basically more than a 50% profit they're making... while ripping sellers off. Also, it's funny they didn't take one of the other dresses because I saw the same exact one on the rack in a different color. There's almost no rhyme or reason to what they take and what they don't. I do not recommend selling your clothes here and instead try Poshmark or Mercari. Knowing how they treat their sellers, I am not sure I will continue shopping here as frequently. read more

I swear! The old staff that worked here was great when I sold and bought things. Now is a different story. I sold a pair of Timberlands, a lightly worn Adidas ultra boost, a brand new bomber jacket, and a couple of Gianfranco Ferré loafers that were lightly worn, and they said they didn't want my items. This business is bizarre. I know my fashion, and these teenagers are here telling me they need up-to-date fashion...?? They need a tutorial to reevaluate what fashion is and what it is right now! I didn't buy anything. I only came here to sell stuff. When you show up to drop stuff off, they make you fill out a form and they need to see your driver's license for some reason. They told me it will take an hour for the seller to go through the items even though I didn't have that many. They only accepted three of my items for a total of $8 cash. I think you get 25% more if you choose to receive store credit. It's barely nothing, but I just wanted to get rid of the items. I've also never sold anything to consignment shops so I have no basis for comparison. I did a quick walk around of the store, but there was nothing that appealed to me. The clothes seemed mostly for the younger demographic. You can probably find better quality and cheaper clothes at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. If you're looking for fair compensation for your clothing, do not go here. You are better off selling your items via Facebook marketplace or eBay. The four items that were taken were like new, and costed me well over $150. After two hours, I was told that they've taken 4 items and that overall, my compensation would be $14 dollars. $14 divided by 4 items equals $3.50 per item which is an extreme low ball for legit material. This is my first and last time bringing clothing of any sort here. read more

I had just bought my lunch at the Kitchen and was getting ready to go home and literally turned around saw some clothing in the window and a patron was walking into the store. So I decided i would give it go, and was pleasantly surprised how nice this retail/consignment shop was. Everything was nice and neat. Clothing on wooden hangers. Stopped by here for the first time a few weekends ago. I haven't had as much success in the clothing department of other thrift stores so decided to check this place out. I love that the clothes were organized by size and the tags had the brands labeled making it easier for me to find certain items especially in the denim section. I loved their selection. They had quite a lot of quality brands. I ended up leaving with a pair of mom jean shorts (something I've been trying to find for months!) and a striped crop top. I had somewhere to be right after, otherwise I think I would have stayed an extra hour! The dressing rooms were open (most thrift stores at the time had theirs closed) and most of the staff were wearing masks from what I remember (as of May 2021). Will definitely be back! read more

First time in this store and the clerk immediately greeted us and explained the entire buying process. We dropped off 2 Ikea bag fulls of clothes, shoes and a couple of bags. It took about an hour so we went thru the store and found some great items for ourselves. All in all it was a really great experience and will absolutely be back. read more

As a seller - This place is so terrible I couldn't even begin to describe. I've taken in over $2,500 work of clothes (at various trips) and I've probably made $200 total. I've taken in brand new nike shoes, coach bags, clothes with the tags still on them. They've also asked to buy the Tiffany jewelry I have while I was wearing it at dirt cheap prices which is just wrong. I basically supply their entire "plus size" section (as they won't go above a 2xl) and never get anything for it. With my job, I consistently need a new wardrobe so the items that I take in are impeccable. I can't say the same for the same for the items I get back they decide not to buy. Yea it's clothes I don't want, but they're better off being donated to charity instead of being insulted with their pricing. As a buyer - there is maybe 2 items in the section that I Hadn't sold to them. And it's appalling to look at the price tags to see what they're reselling my items for opposed to what they paid for them. Also the shoes are always filthy. read more

As a buyer it's fine, but as a SELLER I don't recommend. I brought in a bag full of clothes and shoes. Some things were brand new with tags and some shoes were worn once only. Out of everything they only took 5 items which were 1 brand new pair of dress sandals, 2 brand new pants with tags and 2 shirts. For those items all together they offered me $18. Seller review- Everyone keeps talking about the "snobby" guy working in the front but my interaction was the opposite. He may not be super smiles but he was articulate and helpful in facilitating the process for me. I called ahead to see if there was a wait and they said come on in as there weren't many people who brought in their stuff. Weekday after lunch seemed like a great time to go and armed with 2 bags that would have otherwise gone to donation, it was much easier than selling to other consignment stores in the area ;) Dropped off my bag of clothes, shoes, accessories (which they do not take yet) and headbands (which they don't take) and browsed around. From my brief visit, the store was tidy with tons of selection but geared towards the younger generation. If you're looking for business professional, you'll probably be able to find a bag or shoes but wouldn't bet too much on clothes. Super easy, they went through my stuff in about 20 minutes and came and found me in the nice seating area (which had magazines). It was easy, professional, and a great way to earn some lunch money ;) They will also offer to donate what they don't take if you'd like. They offer more for store credit (25%) versus the 20% for cash. Not bad! read more

I was very excited to hear about this new place that had inexpensive clothing. The clothes are a combination of new and refurbished clothing. When I walked in the door I saw shoes,purses, and clothing for both men and women. On first glance, there appeared to be quite a selection. As you start to look through the racks,the clothes are not the best quality. I would recommend this store for people who are young, thin, and trendy. My daughter found some jeans and a top. I did not find anything that I thought was to my taste. They also buy clothing to resell, but the client in front of me didn't think they offered her enough for her items. The clothes are very inexpensive. My daughter's top and pants came to $20. So, if you are looking for clothes that you can wear for cheap, this might be a place to check out. I can always depend on Uptown Cheapskate when I need specific event clothes! For the last two weddings I've attended, I've managed to find great dresses (cocktail and black tie) to wear - all for a very reasonable price. Both dresses were somewhere between the $13-18 dollar range, which is much more affordable than trying to buy it new at a department store! Their racks of clothes are highly organized and I love the fact that it's divided into ranges of color, making your shopping experience that much easier. As this is a resale store, you do need to keep a careful eye however for small rips and stains. SOME of the items are brand new, but the majority of the other clothes are secondhand. As a seller, I do drop off bags of clothes here occasionally (depending on how many people are in front of you, the selecting/buying may take about an hour or so). You get 25% more by selecting store credit rather than cash, and they really only accept brands that are "popular" and on trend. I do wish they would itemize the receipt to say which clothes they take and how much they are pricing the items! You really don't ever make that much money selling to Uptown, but hey, if you're going to donate your clothes, why not try to make that extra dollar or two? read more

I'm really losing interest in selling my clothing here because I've realized they only give you money back for things that relatively brand new. Which to me, defeats the purpose of a consignment store. I've attempted to sell things that are in great condition multiple times but it's become a pattern that they will return it back to me if it's not something that I purchased within the last few months. Meaning I get a lot returned back to me - even though it's not like I'm selling bell bottoms or anything clearly out of style. It's typically pretty generic stuff like blouses and denim. And not to mention, I've seen clothing in much worse condition/outdated style on their racks. Oh well. read more

I have been to this store multiple times over the past few years. Due to my experiences I will never be coming back. Every time I come and drop things off, they tell me it'll take about an hour. After an hour, I return and they have not even started to look at my items. Every time I bring very nice articles of clothing, high end brands, and things that have never even been worn. As a 21 year old working in the area of fashion, I know that these items are special and many girls would love them. I am a shopaholic and tend to shop a lot, so the clothes I bring in are fairly new, I just get tired of things quickly. I have brought in clothing from brands such as Free People, Michael Kors, Steve Madden, and J crew. All of my clothes are in great quality or I wouldn't even bother bringing them in. Every time, they take maybe 4-5 items and offer me such low prices ($3-$6) that it is pitiful. It is almost like they expect you to bring them articles of clothing that are new with tags. Plus the newer clothes they carry are not even in style themselves. Purple suede high heels? Who wears that????? They also do not accept items that tend to be for bigger girls or older women. The sign in the store states "clothing for women" ....they would not accept any clothing I brought in larger sizes (10-14). I think this is very discriminatory and they are taking place in false advertising. I would NOT recommend selling your things to this store. Such a rip off. And on top of that the customer service is horrible. I will be reporting to the BBB. read more
