I've been organizing my closet so ended up with 2 large bins full of carefully selected never worn or once worn items that I thought might sell at Cheap Skate (brands such as Ted Baker, DVF, Milly, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Trina Turk, Philip Lim). My husband brought the bins to the store for me and came back with 2 bins still pretty full so they didn't buy too much but I got $140 so I think that's pretty fair. I'm giving them 4 stars for the good offer and their purchasing process was easy, but would take away half a star because my husband said one of the store associates- not sure if it was the buyer - was rude to him. read more

This is THE spot to go in the OC for the those shopping outside the fast fashion lane, looking for offbeat finds, closet staples and even designer goods ( l've found a couple of my favorite Helmut Lang pieces here). Unlike some other clothing resale stores (and as a person with a questionable shopping addiction that has been to them all) Uptown Cheapskate has a killer staff that seem genuinely enthusiastic about your presence in the store, whether you purchase or not and won't hover over their customers like they're predetermined shoplifters nor do they dread the minute you walk in the store (you know how some places see you walk in the door, realize that means effort on their part, and a look of "Oh now I have to scrape this toilet paper off my shoe" washes over their face). Nope, the staff at Uptown is actually NICE, helpful, and quite welcoming, with a dignified balance of upselling and trusting that YOU actually know what you're looking for and can handle your own shopping experience (GASP!). Selling items is painless and even accommodating (I've gone in with clothes falling out of their bags before and was graciously helped). And with the wide assortment of sometimes mundane and other times pretty bizarre clothing I've brought by for them to pick through, this store is always down to check out what you have for them and you never know what they'll pick. My only caveat is to be aware and possibly call ahead if you're going to sell to find out what items they're buying for at the moment and to not get discouraged if you brought in a load of winter stuff when they're only buying for spring. This is my favorite place to shop! I love thrifting but Uptown Cheapskate has the latest fashion trends and vintage options! Very well organized at the uptown Torrance. Way easy to find things because it's organized by color, size, categories and gender. The workers are all very knowledgeable in fashion trends and are always eager to help you find something. There's also very cute outfits and accessories on display around the store to give you tips on outfits. They get really creative here! Also, since I follow uptown Torrance on Instagram, I was able to find out about the summer sale! 50% off all colored tags! To be honest I have tried to shop here a couple times, even tried selling some of my clothes; multiple times I've walked in and HAVE never been greeted just looked at. Ok fine. Yesterday I walked in same scenario, I walked in looking for a certain bag I saw posted on their IG walked around looked over the bag wall even the glass case, walked around few more times never got approached by anyone. I asked an employee working if those were all the bags they had. She said yes. I then asked if she knew if they still had a certain bag I saw posted and showed her the picture she slightly glanced at the picture and said Idk you have to look for it they're color coordinated I wouldn't be able to tell you if we have it. I asked her are you sure? Why did I ask that, because it's a designer bag a Versace bag which highly doubt they would put on the bag wall where everyone goes thru. I've worked retail before and I understand customer service and this place does not have it. Instead of dismissing me she could have said hey you know what I'm not sure if we have that let me double check with the person who posted it or have a different employee help me out if she was to busy too care. Point is it's a cool place to look and sell your stuff but if you want customer service it's not it. I ended up going to look over the bag wall one more time and decided to just go across the street and ended up getting greeted properly at 2nd street and actually got helped picking a bag. Ended up buying a bag cost 3x as much as the one I wanted from uptown. And no complaints there. I've seen multiple reviews about customer service on here and if that isn't a flag idk what will be. Just because you are a thrift store does not mean you shouldn't train your employees about sales and customer service, how to up sell, how to talk to customers etc. read more

I love going here and I usually sell my clothes here. I never had a bad experience with selling until today. While I was checking in the buyer dumped my clothes on the counter and was throwing it around like it was trash. i had jewelry inside so when he dumped it all my stuff went flying. He then goes on to make the unnecessary comment saying that he remember the same tote I brought a few days ago and laughed. I use the same bag to carry to put clothes inside since it's so large. Mind you I didn't bring the same items today. I was called as soon as I walked away from the counter and within a minute of bringing it in. I totally understand if they did not want to buy any of my stuff. However I did not appreciate my things being treated the way it was. I also didn't appreciate that he didn't look at my things throughly and just called me right away, I always have a great experience but I'm truly disappointed today. read more

I brought in a bin of stuff to sell and was offered $17 cash/ $22 store credit which I thought was a fair price. Then realized that deal was actually better since they only bought a few mini purses and polo tees! They looked at my items pretty quickly and everything else they couldn't make an offer on was returned nicely back in my bin. Buying there is also great! I found a denim jacket under $10 and it was even discounted more at the register because of their New Year's sale. Plus if you decide not to take a plastic bag - they will donate 5 cents to a charity of your choice! read more

Cool selection of secondhand clothing and accessories! You will find a lot of current mall brands (f21, gap, etc), but the pieces do feel unique and in-style. I'd say it's definitely geared toward 20-somethings and below. I've also sold with them and overall was satisfied with the results. About 10 pieces were accepted for $35-40. Remember you won't make a fortune off your clothes, but it's better to sell then just throw away or give to goodwill ;). read more

Would not recommend. The blonde woman who I assume is the manager is very rude and short with customers. Their store is quite overpriced for the quality of product they are selling. The luxury items are not authenticated yet they sell it at top value even though the are scuffed, stained, torn or missing hardware/handles/straps. Outside of their store is filthy, there's dirty clothing in the parking lot and up front. It's just not a good impression. I would recommend going across the street or savers. read more

I would never ever sell to this store again! They greatly low ball the value of your items; you'd be lucky if you got a $10 payout for any given item. I had beautiful, high quality, once to never worn plus size clothes and they wanted to offer me $2 to $4 for each item. HELL NO! They rejected most of my beautiful clothes that looked so much damn better than what they had on the racks! Most of these re-sale shops low-ball your items so I thinks it's financially wiser to just donate to Goodwill or Salvation Army, you'll get a higher tax write-off than what these stores are willing to pay you. The only thing is that you'll just have to wait for the refund which I'm willing to do instead being insulted by stores like this who then sell your items back to people at a much higher price, like they're new! read more

Unless you're a white customer, then she's very pleasant. She and most of the staff lack even a remote idea of customer service. They are not kind, not helpful, and are annoyed when you ask for help. Unless you are white, then they are happy to assist you. They grossly underprice expensive items and overprice cheap trendy items. The cherry on top is Alisa, the owner, does not want designer items in the store. No, not even Louis Vuitton! Unless you are white, she'll assume they are fake without any authentication process and turn you away. Beware. UPDATE: Alisa, we did not chat for 15 minutes. I stood there and watched you go through my things. You didn't know my yellow item was a top, so I helped you. There was no story. You didn't even want me to be near you while you looked through my items, you told me to sit on the bench. I stood instead. You googled my Louis Vuitton items on your phone for maybe 3 minutes making no indication you were authenticating with a program. Computer programs might not detect race, but you sure can. I can even remember you stopped helping me with my Louis items to help a young white woman get her things. When you were done, you handed my items back to me with no explanation. All you said was "we don't need them." Your cashier Charles was the only person who wasn't rude to me. What kind of business owner wrongfully throws their own employee under the bus? I am not one to write reviews much, but this was very important to me. One of my co-workers told me about this store when it opened because she knows that I'm a huge fan of consignment stores. As a city planner I thought it would be great to support our local business. I've been selling and buying from here a while now. However, my last few visits were very disappointing. One of the guys was very arrogant and unprofessional and had the nerve to act as if some of my items were not good enough. the nerve of him :( Well I found out by another customer that he was the owner's son so maybe that's why he had the audacity to think that he could low ball me or other customers. So I actually went here a while ago and I forgot to leave a review but this is by far the BEST thrift store I've ever been to. Not only did my best friend and I get a really good deal on a ton of cloths but the customer service here is absolutely AMAZING. I didn't catch there names but the two guys who rung up my friends and I were so sweet and funny, my friend suffers from social anxiety but around them she was totally comfortable. They were absolutely fabulous and treated us so kindly throughout our whole trip. I honestly wish I could give them more stars, congratulations on having such great employees. When I first saw this place go up in the neighborhood I thought it would be a great place where I could sell some of my nicer clothing or stuff that I had never worn but yet very stylish. From the moment I went in there I kind of felt like some shadiness was going on they took my clothing put it behind the counter And when they went through my clothing they did two stacks but if you don't want my clothing then give it back to me I didn't say I would donate it they just automatically assumed I was giving it to them no I came in the store to sell my clothes HELLO. Well, I went in to sell my Louis Vuitton purse and boy was I surprised when I walked in. Lol I would say the highest end fashion they have is Michael Kors that I saw around the store. Not exactly what i was expecting. So the owner took my bag to appraise it and she decided to pass on it. I'm not sure she was too familiar with HIGHER end fashion so I took my bag to another shop in Beverley Hills and I got $800 for it!! While looking around until she was done appraising it, I did find some Coach slip ons that are cute for work. Will I be back....NO! It stinks too. read more

As far as buying from there, they have a bunch of cute stuff but you really have to spend some time and look through everything. the prices are okay for some pieces like big brand items but for some that looked worn out were still kind of pricey for being second hand. my selling experience was not really what i had expected, i brought in a big laundry basket of very gently worn items some even with tags. now, a lot of them weren't big brand items but from looking at what they buy i would say most of my items were much better quality. i looked around as they looked through my items and i would see some very worn out purses, shoes, hats. in the end they only took 3 of my items and offered to give me $12 dollars in store credit or $9 dollars in cash LOL. i took the $9 dollars but i was a little shook. I ended up donating the rest of the items just because i didn't want to hold on to them in my car or go somewhere else. read more
