Uptown is a GREAT space! Good bar, nicely done with a great patio. Not just a bar either, they have food which is a huge plus!! There are a lot of TVs so in a town where watching multiple sporting events at once limits your choices to only a few places Uptown fits the bill. The staff is great! At least what there is of it. More often than not they have a single bartender and one person running around delivering food. I have been there on several occasions when that was just not sufficient. Might work on a sleepy Tuesday but not during a Dodgers Playoff game or a World Series. The food is good but a little expensive for what it is. read more

I was at this bar on Saturday afternoon. It wasn't busy. I stood at the corner of the bar with my wallet in my hand, and the bartender ignored me completely. He didn't acknowledge me at all, and I was absolutely in his line of sight. He was busy flirting with a group of women. Like cool, dude, but it would have taken you 30 seconds to get me my drink. I ran out of patience and walked out. I'm disappointed as I've heard great things about this place and had been meaning to go for a while. They fill the weeknights with trivia and open mic nite. I've worked in the service industry for nearly two decades and the staff here are some of the best I've encountered. They're personable, knowledgeable, efficient and always make everyone feel welcomed. After reading their Yelp page I felt so inclined to retort to a specifically negative review about one of the many Fantastic bartenders employed here... This is my retort: If you do not have the patience to wait your turn, as we all must do at times, then maybe the fault lies within. If you think that you're more important than the rest of humanity then maybe the problem isn't everyone else's. I was present on the evening that this bartender was negatively reviewed and what I noticed was a suddenly filled bar (post SB bowl concert) with one bartender working. He did his best and nothing less. I felt for him, not you. I think your review said more about your own character than it did his. Staff super friendly but there was this one guy there who kicked me off of a table in the back, claiming it was his. Sometimes some of my friends drag me to this place or that to watch sporting events. Now it is football season-yipee! Some of my friends seem to love the Uptown lounge (geographically desirable for a couple of them) so we went there. Last night was Sunday Night Football and the place was 60% full. One Bartender and no table service whatsoever. So of course it took a while to get a beer or to order food. Being a warm summer day the place wasn't hot, it was "Freakin' hot". Aren't on the beach, you aren't on the Mesa so perhaps an Air conditioner might be a good investment! That said there was free popcorn and the food was decent for being bar food. I'm sure on a cooler day with one or two extra employees the place would be just fine. Oh, and I am not slamming the place for the most obnoxious Packers fan this side of the Mississippi. Yes Mr. Aaron Rodgers jersey... I am talking about you!!!!! You are hardly the responsibility of the Uptown lounge! The funny thing is this place used to be the most disgusting bar on state street. It was called Dons or something like that. Now its completely renovated, has a beautiful patio with heating lamps, TVS everywhere inside outside. Ample parking and sometimes, when they feel like it it seems, they even serve food. AND its GREAT. One of the best flat breads I've had. Now for the 3 stars: They need to do some rehiring and get some employees that would actually care about customer service, and the quality of the food and drinks they are serving. It actually disgusts me to see how lazy they are to not come out behind the bar and let customers know they don't have table service. HOW WOULD ANYONE KNOW THAT?? Unless they had been there before and learned the hard way, as I and many others did. No offense, but business is way to slow to be waving goodbye to customers instead of serving them, or making them feel stupid. if I didn't live within walking distance, I wouldn't have given this place a second chance. The best service Ive had was with a male bartender with glasses. He was awesome. I think his name was Mike or something with an M and his customer service was outstanding. He's always nice to talk to and makes a great moscow mule. Not sure if they still do it, but they used to have free wine tasting and apps on the last thursday of every month. Its fun, Id call ahead. My visit started off rocky but quickly redeemed itself. I went in the front door where about a dozen people were drinking and laughing and being served by two bartenders. It took a solid 12 minutes before I decided just to seat myself at a table because no one acknowledged my existence. I then had to ask a waiter to take my order after continuing to be ignored. HOWEVER...the food is outstanding! The pizzas are to die for, but the "cherry on top" was Thor, the yellow lab who travels table to table looking for head scratches and any stray crumbs that fall from your plate. Not sure if he belongs to the owner or to a patron, but at the very least Thor keeps you company while you wait for your food. Overall, great place but the service is severely lacking. read more

I've been meaning to drop by here for some time but Friday was the first time I finally went in for a happy hour drink. It's really lovely, with a granite bar, airy back patio and large area with pool tables. When I went in at 4:30 (I love that happy hour now begins at 3 PM in many LA, NYC and SB bars and restaurants), it was mostly men. The owner is from Rhode Island and used to be a professional bodybuilder and is a great proprietor. Women started pouring in around 5:30 or 6 and the band started to set up on the stage where I was finishing my blog and stretching in 2nd position while I charged up the dead Macbook. I didn't try the pizzas but they have a diverse selection all for 13 dollars. The popcorn on the bar is quite good and the happy hour drinks well-priced: 3 for beer, 5 for well drinks and 6 for wine (Markham Merlot was decent). I will definitely be back to this slick, reincarnated dive bar (I have been to Tiburon next to Trimm Salon and Color Bar with dye on my hair in a smock but never went to Don's, which catered to genuine alcoholics who start drinking cheap hard liquor at 10:30AM). The music is fun--1980s mostly--and they have live music almost every night. Note: it DOES get loud when the patrons are watching sports by the pool tables so if you want a chill drink, get there early. read more

Uh, not my scene so much. But, I loved the folks I went with so, sacrifices were made. Drinks, food, about average. They, the waitstaff, were mad at members of our party for dancing. It's a bar, dancing is cool. However, our friends had consumed a bit much, and may have been dancing in the way of some of the staff so I can see their point. Buzzkills, still not appreciated though. Our pizza with arugula on top was decent, not uberfilling, but that's bar food for you. The band we heard was good, do I know their name, no. The crowd was mellow, seemed to be having fun. I actually like this place. Good happy hour. Crazy for Sunday football. My biggest negative is the bottom filling tap for beers. I've never enjoyed this type of filling mechanism. There is no natural head on the beers, and the glasses tend to drip beer all over you while you attempt to drink the beer. It also does no feel as sanitary as a normal pint glass. More importantly, the beer just never seems to taste fresh. I've also been slightly bullied over looking young and my ID photo during super macho Sunday football. I'm bleeping 31 years old. I find Uptown as one of the best places to watch sports in Santa Barbara. My rating is primarily based on this. The staff is friendly, the restaurant is kept clean, and there are high quality HD TV's all over the place. They have a decent selection of alcohol, wine, and several beers on tap with fair prices. They are progressively growing what seems to be a kitchen that is supposed to become a full service restaurant (menu). As of now, they just make some pizzas (a bit expensive) and some other small appetizers. In the first several months, they would often have either a food truck out front OR someone catering food on the back porch (either Gabby's Mexican or an in house cook that makes appetizers and other finger foods). The ambiance and modern feel to the actual restaurant is what makes it enjoyable. They occasionally have live music (I believe jazz on wednesdays) and it tends to be a more "seasoned professional" crowd here. But again, the best place to watch sports. TV's all around the interior and a few more on the back porch. My go to spot to watch sports or grab some drinks with some friends. read more

I love Uptown! The bartenders and wait staff are usually pretty awesome at this bar. During the football season this bar is so much fun on Sundays. They raffle off a ton of prizes, I always look forward to going to Uptown for any sporting events. Jody makes really tasty strong cocktails, and the happy hour deals are some of the best in town!
