This restaurant is hidden in a modern retail plaza. Parking is available on the street in front. The restaurant is well lit with a modern Thai decor that feels homey yet upscale. We were seated immediately and led through the menu on recommendations. We decided to order what the waiter suggested and eat family style. They ask for the desired spice level from 1-5. We ordered 3 and I found the dishes well spiced while the spice nuts in my party wanted more... Dumpling - small appetizer with a great taste. Dumpling was soft and tender, served with a sweet vinegar dipping sauce. Tom Yum Soup - sweet, sour, and spicy all in one bowl. Where have you been all my life? I would order this every time I go! Chicken Lettuce wraps - chicken mixture is well spiced but the lettuce cups were romaine lettuce. Hard to put the chicken on the lettuce so I probably would pass on this next time. Egg bomb with pork - This was a delicious mixture of egg, broth, rice, and pork. The egg yolk drizzles over the broth as a thickening agent and binds the flavors together. Pad Thai with beef - Subtle taste of vinegar on the noodles with beef. I think this is authentic but I'm not a fan of vinegar so I prefer the non-authentic pad Thai. It's pretty good and I would recommend it to others because it's just me that's the problem with this dish. Red curry with chicken - thin slices of chicken in a delicious broth. Slices of carrots round out the dish served with a side of rice. This was guzzled up in no time at all! I would absolutely return to this place next time I'm in Longmont. This place is amazing! Some of the best Thai I've ever had! This was our first stop while visiting Colorado, we loved it so much that we made it our last stop for dinner before we leave! Will be looking elsewhere for a favorite "go to" Thai spot. Tom Kha soup is usually one of my favorites when going for Thai cuisine. Very disappointing with a strong vinegary flavor and missing the usual comforting coco-nutty goodness. They do accommodate gluten free options but, sadly I think the kitchen hasn't tasted or adjusted their recipe - gluten free soy sauce tends to be much saltier than regular ss. My gf cashew chicken was both bland and overwhelmingly salty. Hubby agreed. Atmosphere...background music from Disney's Cinderella, Aladin and a few others...you get the picture. I've ordered delivery from Urban Thai several times, as well as from other Longmont Thai restaurants, with the hope that I'd find cuisine close to my experience with food I've eaten in Thailand. Urban Thai is by far the best - but even then, it is lacking. First - there is inconsistency in the results. I do not know if there were different chefs the 5 times I've ordered from Urban Thai or what - but both portion sizes and quality were not consistent - except with the curries. The salads were typically "meh" - chicken satay salad was a nice mix of greens and toppings, but with 2 skewers of somewhat tasteless chicken satay; fortunately the peanut based dressing balanced it out - although there was not enough to "wet" all the vegetables. The papaya salad (my absolute favorite salad) was also consistently missing something - I do not know if the lack of fish sauce in the recipe had anything to do with it (because I've had it elsewhere without fish sauce and it was still delicious), or if there is something missing in the spice - but it is very bland. The curries (we have tried several) were perfect - every time. Highly recommend them. I've not tried the soups, yet (not a big soup eater/drinker). The mango mousse with sticky rice, while incredibly yummy, is not worth the $6 cost (imo): the wedge of mousse was only about 1" wide (like a small wedge of cheesecake - only 5 delicately sized bites) and there was less than 2 tablespoons of the rice. However, no matter how good the food is, I DO have an issue with being shorted what I've paid for... to whit - in today's more than $100 order, the appetizer sampler was short a shrimp; the cream cheese wonton was short a wonton; and instead of these being delicately fried - they appeared to have been overly fried - or possibly fried in old oil or oil that was too hot (the coconut shrimp was a very dark brown, as were the wontons). That being said - if you like Thai food, and can forgive that it isn't perfectly like food in Thailand, Urban Thai is the best choice (although I think, from now on I will eat in as opposed to having it delivered). read more

I'm going to start by saying that we frequent Urban Thai about once a month and tell as many people as we can that we think this is the best Thai food around. HOWEVER, last night we had an unfortunate experience which has prompted me to update my previous 4-star rating. Unfortunately we were visiting with people who had never been before..they likely won't return. First, the good. We were able to be seated right away on a Saturday night at 6:30p (4 adults and a baby). Always a plus. Drinks were tasty, as were our appetizers (Thai fries and veggie rolls). Our server, Xander, was friendly. My dinner was delicious - Green curry with chicken. I even substituted the peppers for broccoli and they happy accommodated. I will say, I always order my curry at a spice level of 4 and last night it was spicier than it's ever been before (it's cool, I can handle it - just be aware that it can vary). Now, for the bad. My husband almost always orders the Pad Thai and his meal left a lot to be desired. It's like it was forgotten while it was cooking - the egg was overcooked (basically burned), the noodles broke down into little, mushy pieces and there really wasn't much pork. I promise I'm not being overly critical - I'm really just comparing to the quality we usually get. One of our party members ordered the same dish and they were probably prepared at the same time as his meal suffered the same afflictions. Our other party member ordered a shrimp dish that came with rice and seasoned coleslaw. She ordered her meal at a spice level of 2. She tried the slaw first and OH BOY it was spicy. We all tried it and agreed - we can 'handle the heat' - but it was a lot. Her mouth was uncomfortably hot for a while...and this was a bad time for Xander to forget to bring us water refills. The owner/manager came to check on us and he knew it was spicy - he shared that the server should have warned us (uhhh, ya think?!). He did offer to make her something else and she declined. She ended up eating some plain rice and things calmed down a bit. Once she was feeling a little better, she tried a shrimp which was an appropriate level of spicy but the slaw just overpowered everything for her. We felt terrible. We didn't even get to try the food after 75 minutes of waiting for our appetizers that went to the table seated behind us (even though they had just placed their order 10 minutes prior). Then, we were told by our server that the kitchen ran out of one of the appetizers (golden baskets) that we ordered (even though we just saw it go to the other table). She had no explanation for our other missing appetizer (satay). Honestly, we kept giving the place chances that night knowing it was their first weekend open...we had a bad feeling when it took 20 minutes to even be acknowledged by our waitress so that we could order a drink. Even worse, one of the owners kept walking by us and he completely ignored the fact that we were just sitting there waiting and waiting (and waiting) for service. When my husband finally ordered a beer (Tsing Tao), he was told they were out. We asked the waitress to suggest another beer, and she just shrugged. She told us to order our appetizers and entree all at once because, "Everything was cooked fresh (ummm, I hope so!!) and takes a long time (another warning sign!!)." We did as she instructed. After an hour of waiting on the appetizer, she did stop by to say that she would go check on it for us. When she returned, she promised they would be ready in about two minutes. Then we saw her bring the same appetizers we ordered to the table behind us. And, you know the rest of the story. A few other things to note: * It was not that busy anymore -- after we were seated, the place cleared out (so no excuse about wait times, etc.) * It was crazy loud in there * The cracker type thing placed on our table for munching was soggy and wet. * Seemed like people who had been there before, knew the owners, or live in the Prospect neighborhood got MAJOR preferential treatment -- hence the owner ignoring us that night, but chatting it up with people he clearly knew I get that it was their first weekend open. But, it seems to me that would make you want to try harder, not less, to give your customers the best possible experience. The server was awful. No one--not even the owner wandering around--even said they were sorry or acknowledged that we were walking out without eating and were clearly upset. We went to opening weekend at Comida. Yes, there were glitches, but they went above and beyond to make it a great dining experience. We've been there several times since and always recommend it to friends! I've even had several lunch meetings there. It was a very rare date night for us sans children, so the experience was beyond disappointing and ruined our evening. From now on, we'll stick with what we know -- Thai Kitchen! read more

I'm not sure what has taken me so long to post a review of this place! Laziness? Complancency? On the other hand, the owners of Urban Thai (Paul and Edward) are some of the hardest-working people around. They have a history of doing great things for the Prospect neighborhood, but that doesn't even matter much in this review. The overall quality of Urban Thai stands on its own, and I truly believe it would succeed in any of America's hippest cities. Fortunately, we get to enjoy it right here in Longmont. I've been to Urban Thai several times. Sometimes it's a casual date with my wife, other times it's later at night when weather is unpleasant and driving somewhere to eat just isn't appealing. Full disclaimer: we live right down the street, which makes me just plain luckier than you! We visited it just when it opened, and then later on during the fall 2013 floods when travel was unsafe and food supplies were scarce, and many other times. (Amazingly, Urban Thai stayed open during the floods and were able to get deliveries.) When I visit Thai places, I often order pad thai. Boring? Perhaps, but it's a standard, and its quality can help you sort the pros from amateurs. Urban Thai's rendition is accurate and most importantly delicious. They will adjust spice to taste on a 5-point scale for you. The basil and pineapple fried rices are also wonderful as well. Always inventing, Paul and Edward have begun offering frites (I can't wait to try them) and will be featuring live music. The value really is teriffic; you will get a better product and atmosphere than other Thai places in Longmont and the surrounding area, but at very fair prices. They have a full bar and flat-panel TV, a pretty unique offering when paired with Thai. The drinks and bartender, as of this writing, are super. As a neighbor and friend, I want Urban Thai to succeed, but I really want it to remain successful because it's a great concept run well. If you go here on a first date, your date will think you're smart. If it's the 150th date, you'll still look smart. If it's a work meeting, you're a genius. I met a business associate here for lunch and it was amazing. First, the ambiance is very "urban". Once seated inside, you could be in any large, metropolitan city. Our server was very attentive but also sensitive to the fact that we were having a business meeting. We had a very brief wait period for the items we ordered. The food was fantastic! I admit to being a bit surprised as I was here a few years ago and the experience wasn't as pleasant. I'm very pleased with the service and the quality of the food. WOW!!! This has to be the BEST, MOST AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD IN CO! I live in N. Longmont, My partner and I drive to the south end of town at least once a week passing a few other Thai restaurants along the way, just to experience this phenomenal food! The food is always very consisted and the ambiance is great and very welcoming. The owners always try to make it to your table to make sure everything is perfect. Visited this quaint thai restaurant for the first time since it's opening just a few short weeks ago and wow, we are impressed. We arrived in a large party of fifteen (including children of varying ages) for a birthday celebration dinner and we were accommodated with special care and attention from the start. Admittedly, our party came hosting a number of dietary needs and special requests. As a foodie myself, I never like a group dining experience that involves special treatment because I think it takes away from the intended dining experience. But despite some vegetarian and gluten-free restrictions, the waitstaff and restaurant proprietors did an amazing job at managing our unique needs with grace and courtesy. My family ordered apps and main courses to share around the table (we chose to share them family style). The spices and flavoring were to die for. They offer a host of "spiceyness" levels to fit every palate. The food was authentic in every way and one can taste the freshness in the ingredients. The waitress was incredibly attentive and though it took a little extra time to produce all of our main courses, we were content to share our dishes tapas-style and enjoyed offerings from the bar. The atmosphere was intimate and welcoming. Most notably, the staff were very open to input from patrons--a quality I truly cherish in a young restaurant. I found this place through yelp. I was very happy to see great review for this Thai place. So, I give it a try. We ordered Kua Gai noodle and Basil With Chicken dish. They are the worst basil dish I ever had;( it came out like soy sauce soup with chicken. Sorry that I forgot to take picture...and Kua Gai noodle came out exactly like pad see ew. Our server knew everything about the menu, could explain the specials, catered to our personality styles by "reading" us. The Chef came out to ask us if we were enjoying our meal. After being left fairly disillusioned by the current state of Thai Kitchen (food takes forever, service is awful) and Malee Thai (food takes forever, plus the feeling that they use random ingredients tossed into dishes willy-nilly) I visited Urban Thai last night. It was Thursday and a little bit later in the evening, and it was nearly empty. The service was good and I liked the atmosphere...very fitting for Prospect. The food here was good...fairly standard Thai faire. I wasn't blown away by the uniqueness or creativity of the food, which I had somewhat expected based on their website and the articles I read about the restaurant. There wasn't any innovation here and everything seems fairly basic, but they didn't screw anything up either. The first time I try a Thai restaurant I go "American spicy" to get a feel for their range, and I easily could have gone up to "Thai spicy" without a problem. Everything tasted good, came out fairly quickly, and wasn't super expensive. Combine this with the service, and I'll probably end up coming to Urban Thai over the other options in Longmont from now on. I only hope to see a few dishes that are a bit more creative, or lesser-known traditional Thai dishes to keep the menu fresh. read more

Alright. So, I'm from Seattle, where there is a wealth of Thai food that is five star, and Thai hot is unbearable. Colorado hot seems to be about a 3 on the west coast scale. How can we get a Thai heat index that is accurate and consistent restaurant to restaurant? Or does it vary depending on the location in Thailand where the chef originates? A 3 here is mild, what I would consider a 1. A 4 is medium and what I would consider a 3, but quite a step up from mild. We read an article in the TimesCall or the Camera and learned of this place. Always on the hunt for good Thai food in this state, had to try it. Decor and ambiance, lovely. I want to purchase some of the water glasses. The place could be a bit loud from all the hard surfaces. It filled up fast after 5:30 on a Saturday. I hope that lasts. I think there are far too many employees for the size of the place. Sorry all, but maximize efficiency and keep the quality servers, back-waiters, and buss folk, lose the ones who slouch around with grim and unfriendly expressions and appear to have no desire to be working. Our server and bus folk were friendly and helpful, though the server had no idea what we meant by the tray condiments and oils and vinegars that are commonly found at Thai restaurants. I have no idea if those are authentic and found in real Thai places in Thailand but they're awfully good. Urban offers Sriracha but that has its own flavor that isn't always complementary to the flavors of the food. Ask for some of the hot oil they cook with. Yum. Loved the Phad Thai. Its distinct flavors all stood out, tangy, sweet, salty and with a wet and smooth lusciousness that made me want to steal more from my daughter's plate. I liked that it wasn't dry as found at so many places. It was less (or completely free of?) tomato-y than many places too. Good chicken. Drunken Noodles - I had to order them. It's basically the dish by which I judge and compare Thai places. Will have to return to try curries. It was good. Not outstanding. I wanted more punch and more distinct flavors. It's close though. This was the only dish we ordered at level 4 and it was what I consider a 3. A nice heat, but not hot. For me anyway. I prefer larger pieces of things, so I'd slice the onions differently, rather than the cubes, same with the carrots. Same with the tofu (which was pretty good, but with the small cubes easy to be too dry. I preferred the prep work done for the Phad Thai. I'm not sure if the little oval tomatoes were a seasonal addition or the standard, but they are a bit difficult to eat with grace. Many of the noodles were small pieces too. Not sure if that's intentional? The Cashew Chicken was ordered at 3, and totally mild. Good flavors. Need more punch. I liked the obvious care the gentleman (sous-chef?) took when putting the finishing touches on all the dishes and verifying the orders. Good sign. I know the owner(s) will read this "Hi!" and I appreciate that. I hope the restaurant is successful and grows to be one of the best in the area. Will return to try the curries and maybe some apps. Seems like we've been waiting for this restaurant to open for quite a while and it finally has. My verdict? It has amazing potential. It's obvious that there are still some things to fine tune but, overall, they are doing a fine job. I ordered the shrimp rolls as an appetizer and they were scrumptious. Next I had the pineapple curry (Thai hot!) and it, too, was extraordinary. My only complaint would be that for something supposedly "Thai hot" it lacked in the heat department. I would consider it "medium" hot. If you're going to call it Thai hot I expect to be sweating. A lot. I can't forget to compliment the bartender on what was the best gin martini (Navy strength!) I'll say right out front that I'm a big fan of the food here. I've cooked Thai at home for over 20 years, I know what's good, bad, authentic and what ain't. UT has it down. (The Chicken Larb is about as close to mine as I've found it. Plus a spiciness of 5 MEANS 5. Yeah, I know, watch me sweat in public, I should be embarrassed but I'm not.) They do a few twists on Pad Thai- which I tend to avoid at most Thai restaurants- which makes it worth ordering. The shrimp "scampi" is delectable, way yummy with sour cabbage and rice (make mine a 5). I'm happy to eat here and won't stop coming back, BUT the one thing I find very disappointing about UT is the drink menu. It's not really very inspired and, worse, the talent of the bartenders is not equal to the food by quite a bit. Twice I've asked for a Manhattan- pretty much a bar standard. Twice I was told 1) we don't have any Vermouth (really? what respectable bar doesn't) or 2) "What's that?" The second comment was made by a bartender that wasn't even old enough to drink. When I tried to tell her how to make it I got the same "Vermouth?" response. I ended up with a Moscow Mule (yawn). To add insult to injury, it turned out the bar DID have Vermouth, but neither bartender know enough to find it. Come on. read more

Probably the worst Thai food I've ever had. I might judge a little harshly, because Thai food is my favorite, so keep that in mind. Restaurant wasn't any warmer than outside when we came in for lunch, I ended up putting more layers on. Ordered fried spring rolls as an appetizer, they were average/below average for Thai restaurants. I ordered panang curry, since they didn't even offer the dish I was looking for, and my boyfriend ordered pad see ew with pork. Worst panang curry I've ever had, mostly because it was made with frozen pees and carrots (and other than the chicken, that was all that was in it). Really? For the amount of money this place charges I think they could slice fresh carrots... Pad see ew wasn't very good either, and was spiced wrong. Overall I wish I could get my money back (was 40 dollars for 2 people for LUNCH) and will never eat here again. Doesn't look like they get much business either, I'm not surprised. read more

This restaurant earns its 5 star rating by delivering on the promise of good food at good prices with good service. The combination of all of these "goods" is GREAT! We have yet to find a dish on the menu that we did not like. The best advice given here is to try them all and make up your own mind as to which dish is the best upon your next trip back. Here is a neighborhood restaurant that is worth the drive to the Prospect community where it resides. There is a dedication here to top end ingredients that shows and every detail of the service and menu has been considered. Add in a warm and inviting ambiance and you have a restaurant worth visiting often. Please, PLEASE, ignore the reviews that rated Urban Thai as 1 star. This simply can't be and I would challenge those who rated it so low to return again with an open mind and see if you still feel the same. My wife and I had lunch there on Saturday. We loved it. Food was great. We both had curry dishes. The heat was spot on what we requested. The edamame was the best I've ever had. There is much better Thai food out there. Appetizers were over cooked and extremely brown. Tom Kha soup was extremely lemony. I don't know if you can get that much lemon out of the lemongrass, I'm guessing they were using real lemon for flavoring. It was very light on the coconut milk. My wife couldn't finish it. I had the Pad Thai noodles, wow there is the heavy lemon again, couldn't finish it, it was giving me an irritable stomach. My wife had the Panang Curry which she liked but we both noticed it had a lot of mint in it and it came out lukewarm. I don't think we will be returning. read more

UPDATE - 2/27/2017 It appears that Edward the owner can't stand honest reviews that don't praise his establishment and feels the need to resort to personal and ad hominem attacks that are full of lies. This behavior has been reported to YELP and I am hoping that YELP takes the appropriate actions in this matter. It is really telling when an owner resorts to these types of personal, lying and ad hominem attacks thinking that they can bully someone into revising or removing their review. NEWS FLASH - it doesn't work and will never work on me as I answer only to GOD and I stand by my reviews 100% as the TRUTH as I see, feel, taste or experience it. IF you are a follower of mine or like and trust my reviews, I urge you to read Edward's lying comments about me and judge for yourself if you want to go to an establishment that has such a lying and hateful owner that can't handle criticism of their food - especially when other reviews say similar things. Edward, I forgive you; but, you might also want to go see some sort of counselor or perhaps get into anger management therapy at the very least/ ====================================================================== Original review dated: 2-26-2017 It breaks my heart that a restaurant that I had formerly given 5 stars to back in 2013 has fallen from one of my personal top places to eat Thai food down to the worst Thai food I've ever eaten. Let me start by saying that the ownership has not changed hands since my first glowing reviews back in 2013. Edward and Paul are still the owners and on this occasion, I had to break the news to Paul that we were extremely unhappy. Paul, being the perfect gentleman and owner graciously took all my harsh criticism with respect and due attention that I wish all owners / managers of businesses should be capable of doing. So what changed from the place I had fallen in love with for authentic Thai food? Simply put, a lot. The place still pretty much looks the same as it did originally. But, the recipes for the menu items changed (to me at least) dramatically. Only our appetizer of Chicken Satay was prepared well. The soup, our entrees and our order of Pineapple Fried Rice were ALL way too salty. The person I was with (who loves salt), even said it was too salty for them and since I dislike salty food I was in total agony (and still am even since coming home and drinking a lot of water to flush my system). To Paul's credit, he took care of our check (without us asking or wanting him to), so the only damage was a very generous tip to our server - Kami (? spelling ?) that immediately told Paul to come see us since we weren't going to be leave as happy customers. We won't be going back to Urban Thai; but, it's not because of the staff or ownership - it's purely due to the food changing to suit the tastes of the "average American" that don't know how to appreciate the authentic Thai food that was originally served - when the restaurant first opened.
