I'll admit - I was incredibly suspicious of all these glowing 5 star reviews. So I figured I should pop by and try it for myself, in the name of research, of course. As it turns out, they were right! Tracy and Catherine are awesome and this welcoming little salon is now my first choice for manis and pedis. Urbantopia Spa is run by the women who do the work. These two sassy ladies opened the shop a little over 6 months ago with another friend, and they've been dolling out the good stuff ever since. Said good stuff also comes with free wine and wifi, two of my very favorite things. Moreover, my pedi was excellent. Sure, it was a bit more expensive than the walk-ins along NW 21st ($30 bones), but the quality of the shop, the products, the staff, and the service itself were all top notch and well worth the extra cash in my book. read more

I had the whole salon to myself around 4pm and got the royal treatment from T and Lee. The hot stone pedicure is relaxing and my feet felt incredible after a long day of walking the city. Was in PDX for a wedding and wanted to get a new full set. Worker said they do not do that, only Shellac (gel). Okay, so gel it is, no acrylics. I request a Deluxe Manicure ($35). About 3/4 of the way through my mani, another lady walks in and asks for a new, full set. They sit her down next to me, pull out the acrylics and drill. Shame on me for not saying a word. I just sat there staring straight ahead. When manicure/gel was finished, they charged me $55 (35 for manicure/20 for gel). RIP OFF. And, you can't add tip on your debit card. Tip is cash only. I wish I didn't leave a tip. I wish I would've said something. Waste of money and time. read more

My feet really needed some attention and I hadn't had time to deal with them, so on a day when I had to be downtown for another reason I booked myself into Urbantopia. When I arrived I was greeted promptly and escorted to a chair. I was offered my choice of pedicure services and then my choice of fragrance for the various products that they would use. They did a nice job and were very friendly and gracious. I gave them only four stars instead of five for two reasons: (1) the water in my basin was lukewarm and not hot (and it was full before I put my feet in so they couldn't really add hot water); and (2) the hot stone massage was not as forceful as I would have liked. I was walking around downtown Portland when I pass this spot. It actually reminded me that I needed a manicure. I noticed that it looked pretty slow in there, to the point where I thought it might've been closed. I reached for the door and a lady jumped up to greet me with great energy. Her name was Lucy and she was great. She is one of the managers there. I immediately decided that I was going to get a manicure. She told me to pick a color and escorted me over to the polishes. I asked her if she minded if I tried a few on to see how it looked on my nails as opposed to the bottle. We laughed and said "try it before you buy it!" I told her she should have a sign that reads that. She asked me if I wanted tea, water, or wine. I asked for a decaf green tea and it was delicious. I was then brought over to a table where a woman named Tracy was going to do my manicure. At this point, I was happy as a clam as I was getting taken care of by Lucy and Tracy! I asked, because I did see a chair massager, if they did massages. She said that she only does neck and back massage because she is injured and unlicensed to do a full body massage. I told her how much my body hurts from all the travel and she said she recommended to get a full body massage maybe elsewhere since their masseuse was not in that day. That was a bummer because I wanted to get both done at once. At least she was honest. I went for a dark/royal blue color with the infinite shine by OPI. The Patriots were playing in the Super Bowl the following weekend I wanted to represent my favorite team. My nails looked great when I left. It was a $20 manicure which is pretty high without tip. Altogether $25 later, my nails looked great. Make sure they put this amazing smelling almond oil on your nails to help dry quicker before you leave. I need to find out online and buy it! The only issue was, a few days later my nails were already peeling. I think it's because she put too many top coats on. If you decide to go here, make sure they only put one topcoat on because my nails are peeling and it was really disappointing! Otherwise, the customer service was great here. I received a voicemail canceling my appointment and then a text saying that they were canceling my appointment due to protests 2 blocks away and it being unsafe for them to stay open. I live very close to the location so I was ironically walking by right around when they texted and they were still open and there have been no protests happening in the neighborhood today. Seems like a conservative excuse to cancel my appointment because they overbooked or could make more money. Visiting Portland to do some hiking and site-seeing and my feet needed some love. Made a last minute appointment at Urbantopia and it was fabulous. The technician was meticulous in how she treated my feet and nails and was able to remove some pressure that my big toe nail was putting on my nail bed without cutting the nail down the sides. The man was in such a hurry that I felt anxious the whole massage. As someone who does nails, I was very disappointed. He barley gave me a massage it was more like lotion being applied on me for 15 min. The guy hit my wet gel on my big toe so it cured with a uneven smudge and was going to send off out the door so I had to ask him to redo it. Went with my daughter for pedicures. Very nice experience....but, when it was done, they gave me disposable slippers, but put plastic bags over my daughters toes and put her socks and shoes on. I was excited to get my nails done for the first time in months, but do to lack of communication I walked out of this place feeling so sad about my nails. Originally I wanted gel acrylic and she said the dipping powder was better, "more organic". It wasn't what I wanted, I wanted to trust her because she was the professional. After one lady had finished prepping my nails, the manager had taken over and started painted my nails. Which, didn't make sense why I wouldn't stay with the same nail technician who started it. A third lady came to the manager and took over. I was confused but just wanted my nails done. I notice her putting layers of nail polish on one hand and finally say something. How I did not like or want the nails she was messing up on... She tries to remove the excess nail polish while the manager is trying to also help the other hand to help buff and file down the excess layers of nail polish. They ended up rounding my nails which wasn't even the original style I wanted (pointy coffin). The original nail tech she would do ombré free on it. It made it worse..., I was so overall disappointed with the service I received, tho they tried to make it better it was just a mess. TL;DR find a different nail salon to go to!! read more

I had never been in a massage chair that massages your derrière and it was amazing. I got a spa pedi and it came with a glass of wine. Cash is long here. As compared to the other white clients, I was not even asked for any welcome drinks which they graciously were asking and serving their other clients. The spa is relaxing and tranquil, the massage chairs and foot baths are new, comfortable and beautiful. Catherine gave my toes a perfect pedicure as well as a much needed relaxing foot and leg massage. All of my work day and week woes melted away quickly. So.....Kelly has moved! I moved to Portland from Downtown Chicago about 5 years ago and I had to find a new eyebrow shaper/waxer. Kelly is literally beyond anything I found in Chicago. Because I travel extensively for work, I could also have chosen a place in San Fran or NYC. Kelly is better than anyone I have found in all of these places. I want a very specific eyebrow: shaped with a very sexy, high arch. I am very particular about what they need to be like because of my eye shapes, they need to open my eyes. Most places just do a 'natural' look which does nothing but get rid of stray hairs. Kelly has worked in LA for the past 20 years and knows exactly how to shape and arch -- she is a pro. They are sexy, high, and arched. To top it off, MY FATHER, saw me and said what did you do to your eyebrows? They are absolutely perfect. Everyone asks me where I got them done. To top it off, she charges LESS than the usual $24, like only around $15, so I tip her a lot. And I can walk in anytime. Walk-ins are crucial for me because I'm flying all over the country and can pop in on a minutes notice. It's never a problem. If you are visiting here and need a quick fresh eyebrow wax and shaping, go see her. She's magic. Beyond that, the atmosphere is great, they are all really nice and know what they are doing. Kelly is becoming more and more successful because she knows her craft. So I'm excited she is working at this new place. read more

I called on Wednesday around 11am to fit in a last minute, afternoon manicure and they got me right in. It was my first time and Michelle did my nails. I opted to upgrade to the manicure with additional services, but it didn't seem like anything more than an average manicure. She did a "mask" that seemed like it was more of a shower gel and she put hot towels on my hands and arms. Other than that, it was a standard manicure to me. The place is very clean, she offered me wine and I did not wait. Michelle did a great job and would go to her again. When all was said and done, I got a decent manicure and great shellac polish for $50. Update: my shellac manicure lasted nearly three weeks with just a few small chips on the last few days! I went back yesterday on my lunch and got a shellac polish change. I chose Michelle again because she obviously does a fantastic job. She put a lot of time and energy into my polish change, including re-prepping my nails for shellac. She is fantastic and my nails look great again. read more
