The food at Uru-Swati was unique and tasty. My Malai Kofta was very good, but not quite as flavorful as I had at Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine a couple of weeks ago. I appreciated their vegetarian menu and being able to sample everything. The atmosphere was unique and gave us a lot to talk about while we waited for our food. My boyfriend ordered a lentil dish neither one of us could pronounce, but fortunately the server knew what he was trying to say! Unfortunately communication fell apart after that. The language barrier between us and our server became increasingly evident as our meal progressed. We never got our appetizer (the server quickly removed it from our check when we pointed this out) and felt bad when we turned away a drink we didn't order. I have been bugging my boyfriend to try really good Indian, so with some help from our fellow yelpers, here we were! It was a Friday night, the place was pretty slow, surprisingly. I even called ahead and they told me I didn't need a reservation but appreciated the call ahead. We started with the Masala Dosa. I'm not an expert on Indian cuisine, but it was yummy, and certainly plenty for the 2 of us. The combination of the potato filling with the dipping soup was very unique. My boyfriend ordered the Palak Paneer...pretty standard, but still very good. I have to say that I loved my dish even more...the Bhindi Masala was delicious and very memorable. The samosa chat is INCREDIBLE because it has so many textures and layers of flavor. Also tried the palak paneer, paper masala dosa and garlic naan. I love dipping the dosa and naan in the sambar and palak paneer. The meal was very enjoyable and delicious. Park your car for an hour or two and walk around Devon when the sun is out. Thanks to Google search I was able to select from the menu without being disappointed.... I love this place. It is one of my go-to restaurants for fast and delicious delivery. I have several favorites depending on what I feel like eating that day, and everything I've tried is tasty and carefully packaged. I love the samosa chaat - the samosa is still crisp and wonderful when it arrives. I also get paratha meals depending on my mood - the dal is so flavorful. Pav bhaji and puri bhaji are both so good. Clearly I like little combos - I haven't ordered an entree from here in a while but it's because I looove bread! read more

Love that the restaurant is all vegetarian however I feel that the food lacked quality and quantity. I have had better quality Indian food in other non veg restaurants and for the same price or cheaper. Plus the drive to Devon is very long and the restaurant itself is ok but not that nice. It's more like a fast food joint. I would say that the onion naan was great but the paneer and chana were mediocre. We also had the masala dosa which was interesting but just a lot of bread with a little filling. Will probably not be coming back here and will try Mysore next time if I'm in the area. read more

This was my first time eating Indian food, and let me say I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK! Took my boyfriend here to celebrate his birthday here's what we had Appetizer:Combination plate of various fritters. I forget was included exactly but they were delish. Even though they were fried, oil wasn't leaking off of them. They come with two dipping sauces, a red which was sweet and had a bbq-ness to it and then a green that tasted like herbs. Entree: I had the vegetable dumplings in a special curry sauce and the bf had the mixed vegetables in a cury sauce. Each came with rice, a dipping sauce that tasted like sour cream and lemon grass. We shared our food and there are three words I would use to describe it, sweet, spicy, and savory. Best part was we paid under $35. Cannot wait to go back. read more

In fact, I have stopped eating India food on Devon because I think there is better quality food available in downtown at India House or Gaylord! Stopped by on a late Saturday afternoon on Devon, not excited about any of the regular spots like Sabri or Tiffin. Pulled out the yelp app and this place had some good reviews so we decided to try it out. Here is what we ordered and my review Mysore masala dosa - excellent dosa and coconut chutney. Pass Poorui/Bhaji - Both poori and bhaji came out cold, salt was lacking in the bhaji. Fail Mooli paratha - Not stuffed well with mooli. Came with daal makhani, not a true north indian combination. My honest recommendation is to get a million things, with 6-8 people present and chow down. Some seriously tasty dishes. Also: love the music videos playing. Let's count the ways this was a bad experience: 1. Hair in my appetizer and clinging to the serving dishes. For some reason we decided to overlook and continue with the meal. 2. We were served coffee in a glass with lipstick smeared on it. Sent it back and instead of giving us clean glasses we were served drinks in to-go cups. 3. The food was not fresh. This was some of the mushiest cauliflower I've ever had and the spinach was so overcooked it was no longer green. 4. After the horrible meal, the waitress didn't say we needed to pay at the counter, so we just sat at the table waiting for her to bring the check. 5. The owner wanted to argue the terms and conditions of the Groupon that we used, even though it was clearly printed on the Groupon. Did I mention this was my first time at this restaurant? yesterday was my second time eating at Uru. I must say all the dishes are really flavorful. We ordered a feast for four people and everyone was full. We couldn't even order dessert. I highly recommend the veg uttapam and masala dosa and veg makhani. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu really. Yes, 5 stars. Everything here is fantastic. Also, not a huge restaurant, but great for kids and ability to push a couple of tables together for large groups. For those that are strictly vegetarian - Indian food is the only food I would eat. This place is great and BYOB as well. read more

Went to this place on a cold Chicago Monday night. The place was not crowded and the service was prompt and friendly. The food was really tasty with options even for people that can not take spice as much as Indians. The yogurt side dish was delicious! The blue lighting needs to change but the fun tv shows were a great distraction. read more

Devon has many South Indian and Gujarati restaurants but we always feel that there are no good north Indian restaurants. But this one is so good especially the starters. Food was not fresh. Had mysore masala dosa, sev puri ($6 for 8 puris!!!!), samosa and chai. Samosa was the worst -- it seemed like it was just taken off after being deep fried - close to being burnt. The filling in the samosa was not fresh at all. The sambar with the dosa was terrible. The dosa itself was passable. Will never eat here again - it left me burping all through the day. This was the first Indian place I've tried in Chicago on my trip from L.A. and I have to say I'm so disappointed in the quality of the food. The samosa chat had an old looking green chutney added to it and it was just lack luster and tasteless. It did have a lot of salt in it and that's about it. The dosa stuffing was dry and bland. The sambar by far was the most disappointing. Also when we entered the owner was sitting there gawking at us without as much as a hello. Rule one of customer service please greet your customers. I've eaten at Uru Swati over a dozen times and they never disappoint me. The Chana masala, Baigani Bhartha (slow smoked eggplant), Tadka Dal are my FAVORITES. I go out of my way to dine in or when I am in a hurry carry out an AMAZING meal. Have dined-in a few times and ordered-in many more. While their food does taste better when dining-in - it's a great delivery option and we've never been sorry. The restaurant is clean and kinda cute in a more contemporary, funky - stark kind-of-way - definitely not like the other places in the area. Service is friendly and efficient but pretty basic. Of note, they have demonstrated great customer service and hospitality on the rare occasion something was not as expected or missed, etc. Completely above and beyond. The prices are reasonable, the food consistent, and we're always happy with our experience. We're not vegetarians - just like the quality of the food and haven't missed the meat, yet. I love Ayurveda healing food and have been to other restaurants in the area, but this place is just the right one- from the friendly customer service to the tasty dishes.
