On first impression, it was hard to tell what was being served (the waiter was hard to hear and we hadn't dedicate some of the plate's names to memory) and the food itself took some time to come to the table. At least I didn't have to ask about whether a menu item had meat in it! The food was okay. I ordered the eggless vegetable omelet and basmati rice. The omelet was a little difficult to eat because I wasn't given a fork, and the vegetables were peas, chopped up baby carrots, and slivers of onion. But the overall agreement of my group was that the spice blend was well-concocted, and I take part in that consensus. This might be the best service I ever had in the Devon area, with the exception of my family restaurant in the early 70s-80s. They are very welcoming and they do a great job explaining and recommending dishes if you never tried indian dishes before. What is even better is that it is all vegetarian and the food is just excellent. Samosa are good but the mini meal are perfect and cheap!!! I love chana marsala. And there Dosa are huge and good too. My favorite Indian that I've found in Chicago thus far. Located in the heart Little India on Devon Street (aka further north than most Chicagoans are willing to travel), this casual, BYOB restaurant is serving up some standard, yet delicious Indian food! My go-to orders are always Paneer Makhani and Malai Kofta, which I stuck with here and was completely satisfied. Creamy, filling, delicious, it was a perfect, classic Indian meal. Came in on a Friday.. the place was empty.. we were seated quickly. They can upgrade the seats, they are all peeling and look terrible. My husband and I are carnivores but when on Devon street we always eat here. We start with either the samosa chaat. The samosa chaat is like an Indian nacho. It has samosas and a bunch of other ingredients piled on-top of it. Some of the ingredient are warm and others are cold. It's s very unique flavor profile. For our main course we get the pav bhaji and malai kofta. The pav bhaji is like an Indian mashed potato. It's potatoes with other veggies blended and the lightly fried to enhance the flavor. You eat it with pav(bread). It not too oily or spicy and it has all the warm Indian spices I crave. Malai kofta is like Indian meatball. It's got a very soft consistency. They are cooked in a spicy creamy sauce. We usually get garlic naan with it. Overall the food here is the best Indian vegetarian food I've ever had. You can't beat the prices either. You can get a full meal with plenty of left overs for less than $30. The only downside to the whole experience is the service. The service is okay but whenever we go they are usually beyond packed and extra busy. They could benefit from a few more servers but we still go back so it's not a dealbreaker. Being a non-veg, we were skeptical at first on if we'd like this place. But oh boy! What a delicious find (Thanks groupon!) I'm a frequent visitor of Devon, but never tried this place before. With the groupon, we got the Paper Masala Dosa along with other dishes (which tells you that the dosa was a hit!). It was a perfect combination of potatoes, spices and dipped into the sambar..man oh man was it good. I've returned to this place 3 times since then just for the dosa, and haven't been disappointed. Live in neighborhood and decided to try their food. When i went in, the place was empty. I ordered garlic naan and samosas to go. After 5 minutes an Indian woman and a young man came in went up to the counter and then sat at the front of the restaurant. A young waiter took their order and in about 5 minutes comes out with rice and a order of samosas. I ask him if those are my samosas and he told me 2 more minutes for my naan cooking fresh. 5 minutes pass and i ask where my order is he says 11/2 minute it will be perfect. 5 more minutes pass and i finally get my order. It does not take 20 minutes for the naan. When i open it they must have put pats of unmelted butter on it because you could see it on the top of the naan when it was unwrapped the soaked melted butter on the top of it. The samosas are frozen not fresh. Terrible service and food. Would not go back. read more

TL; DR: If you want good Indian food, avoid this place. For south Indian, give a shot to Annapurna or Mysore Woodlands which are right across the street. The only way to not be disappointed with this place I think is to go in with no expectations. I say this because if you walk in with the remotest expectations of good Indian food that tastes what its supposed to taste like you will be massively disappointed. I have no freaking clue as to what the other reviewers are on about but my guess is that mosts of these individuals don't know what the food they order and get is supposed to taste like as opposed to Uru Swati's take on it. I was there for lunch with my family on a Sunday. We ordered the following: 1. Pav Bhaji 2. Sev puri 3. Idli Vada Combo 4. Mysore Sada Dosa 5. Bhel (Jain) All of these were like the equivalent of the paintings of exotic animals made by people who heard descriptions from travellers travelling to these lands. I'll start of with the Pav Bhaji. Pav Bhaji literally means Dinner Roll with Vegetable curry. ***Technically***, the Pav Bhaji at Uru Swati was exactly that: we were served dinner rolls with a vegetable curry. However, the vegetable curry was all wrong! I like spicy food, so I have no qualms about hotness of food, but all I could taste in the curry was the taste of powdered chilli. It's not bothersome, but its not what Pav Bhaji is supposed to taste like. Period. Sev Puri is an Indian snack that is supposed to look like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevpuri#/media/File:Sev_Puri.jpg It also usually has gracious helpings of Onion, Potato, sweet and sour sauces, cilantro, mint chutney etc. Consequently, it has some heft to it (see wikipedia picture for reference). What we got was a sorry mess devoid of half the ingredients with tiny, TINY portions. which they charge you $5.95 for. The Idli Vada Combo is served with Sambar and Coconut chutney. The Idlis are steamed rice cakes made from a fermented batter. The idlis were probably not allowed to ferment for long enough or had less rice and more peas in the batter, but they tasted off and lacked salt. The Vada on the other hand had slightly more salt than needed. The most offensive element was the Sambar. The Sambar needs to be at least mildly tangy, in addition to having other vegetables (shallots, okra, drumstick, eggplant, pumpkin, tomatoes etc.) and cooked split-pigeon peas as well as black gram lentils. Uru swati's sambar was neither tangy, nor did it have any veggies at all! This was basically a regular dal that was served in place of Sambar. Shameful! The Mysore Sada Dosa is a dosa which is cooked with a red, dry chutney applied on one side while it's being cooked. Uru Swati's version was made with some random chutney which was essentially flavorless. This too was served with that travesty Uru swati passes of for Sambar. I did not taste the Bhel myself but my mom-in-law had it and wasn't particularly impressed either. To me, this was ~$36 I spent for a pile of disappointment. Feel free to visit this place if you like bland, flavorless, unauthentic slop. Their slogan is "Healing through food"; if there food is meant to heal, then homeopathy will cure cancer and AIDS. If you however want to eat decent food, try any of the other restaurants in the area (and there are a lot!). I was looking for south indian food and I regret not going to Mysore Woodlands which was juste across the street and only a block away. :( read more

First and only place my husband and I go to in Devon. We first came across it with a groupon (so check If they have a good deal on there). We usually get food to indulge in while there and more to take home for the next day cuz its so delicious!! Our go to is a couple chat items (sev puri, dahi puri), pav bhaji (this is a must...esp if you like spicy food!! probably the best pav bhaji i've had), dosa (paper or mysore), and a north indian curry with naan to take home Ambiance is like a typical casual indian restaurant, they have some decent art on the walls and usually have some bollywood videos playing on their TV. Service: I've had a mixture of waiter experiences here. There is one older guy who is mostly always there, he is super slow, very casual and a little awkward, however the delicious food makes this forgiving. The younger waiters on the other hand are super polite and quick, so it just depends on your luck! read more

Arguably the best Indian Food I've had in the US. Their Vada pav is amazing and tastes almost as good as Mumbai street vada pav. Aloo paratha and Chole bhature are the other favorites. Also, don't leave the place without trying their kulfi falooda. read more

Ok. So, my first visit would have definitely been a 4/4.5 star experience. The decor was pretty basic, the interior wasn't posh, but neither was it shabby. I went with a friend and we shared the Samosa Chaat to start, then several other items for our meal. Now, when I tell you that the chaat was so good that I wanted to come back every day that week, I need you to believe me! The biriyani was good, the dosa was pretty tasty, many of the mixed pakoras were dry, and the rice pudding was delicious. But that chaat, though; I nearly wrote a sonnet while sitting at the table! I couldn't seem to get back to Uru Swati for the chaat I was craving (they are closed on Tuesday, I was too late on Wednesday, had other plans for Thursday, etc.), so I went to my old standby Spinzer and tried theirs. It was good; a larger portion, even--but it did not compare to the foodgasm I remembered from Uru Swati! Fast forward a few months. I'd been bragging to my lifelong-vegetarian coworker about how good this place is, so I took her for her birthday. It was an excessively hot day and we were ready to soak up some A/C. Before we enter the establishment, we notice a rather foul odor. It changes somewhat for the better upon entry, but there was still something rotten in Denmark! The interior seemed a bit dim this time and the table we were shown to had tape on the chairs. Our initial server was pleasant and sufficiently attentive. We ordered drinks and a samosa chaat for each; I was NOT going to share this time! The spiced, sweetened almond milk beverage (Bhadam Thandai?) was delightful, and my friend enjoyed her mango lassi. I ordered the puri and paneer-stuffed naan for the table, my entree was Dal Makhani (black lentils and beans in a creamy sauce), while my coworker opted for the Baigan Bhartha (smoked eggplant curry). Now, sometime during the course of our food preparation, there was a changing of the guards. We were served by a few different people, but we never saw our pleasant and attentive original server again. The breads arrived, and the puri was fine, but the naan had no filling. My entree may as well have been fish tank rocks, soaked split yellow peas and dry navy beans. My coworker's eggplant dish seemed to be to her liking, other than a bit more spicy than she would've liked. When I was able to get someone's attention, I mentioned that my naan lacked the cheese and cilantro it was supposed to be stuffed with. There seemed to be some uncertainty amongst the staff about whether or not that was the case, but someone later brought me out some hot, fresh paneer naan. Only, this paneer was like freeze-dried large curd cottage cheese, and there was still no cilantro. I was determined for this lunch to end on a good note, so I ordered rice pudding because my friend loves it. Because it was so good last time, I ordered myself one, too. Someone brought two spoons to our table, then, shortly, someone else brought out a small dish of sweetened hot milk with rice. If I'd had a chance to engage whomever brought the dish out, I would have requested the second dessert, but my friend took a look at it and said "Nevermind. I don't need any rice pudding." The taste wasn't bad, but the consistency, flavor, and presentation were all off. The rice pudding I had on my first visit was a cold one, lightly spiced with cardamom and saffron, plenty viscous, and garnished with crushed pistachios. What this miscarriage of porridge was I don't know, but I'm rather glad I only had to deal with one! I'm not going to write Uru Swati off because that chaat was so good, so I'm hoping that it was just an off day. Next time, I think I might just stick with the samosa chaat. Love this place and love the food - fresh and meat free. We usually order a bread that is very long (can't recall the name but it is about two feet). Anything you order would be fine. We went there without a reservation on a Saturday night at around 6:00. There was no wait. I noticed people came after us had to wait a bit. Though I couldn't remember all of the names of the dishes we ordered, I managed to remember how many dishes we ordered. My entree never made to our table.
