Very disappointed to write this negative review, because my experience here has been pretty good for years and I never wrote anything, but what went down three weeks ago was so lousy, petty and seemingly unprofessional and anti-citzen service, I just had to weigh in. Took a small package to send to a friend of mine in Illinois. I had put a bunch of stamps on it, but I knew it needed more. When I got to the counter, the woman who waited on me started to print out a postage sticker, but I stopped her and said, with a big friendly smile, "Wait, no! Please, I'd rather put stamps on this." Then I pointed to their big poster on the wall, which said "Stamps Add Style." I added, "Stamps add style! If we're going to do this, we might as well have some artsy fun with it, right?" Totally friendly, plus I like seeing different kinds of stamps. She was sour as could be. Let out a huge, exasperated sigh, then moved v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y behind her to get two stamps to put on the small package. "I'll put them on," I offered, but she cast me a glance, said nothing and did it herself. Then she said, "You know, you won't be able to track this without the postage metered sticker," or something along those lines. "That's okay, I trust you," I said. "It's just a couple CDs of good music for a friend of mine." "Uh-huh," she said. I was starting to get a bad vibe, so I said, "Hey, I'll take that and mail it if you like." She responded dismissively, "No, we'll take care of it," then looked past me and said, "Next!" Now, today, it's three weeks later and I've not heard from my friend. I texted him this morning to see if he'd gotten the CDs. He has not. Perhaps they were lost in the mail. Or perhaps they never made it out of Hillcrest. In the last two month some of my mail was stolen from the post office in Hillcrest. They use my checks for San Diego gas and electric and a check for 21st century insurance. they erased them and made them payables to themself then they try to cash them at my bank. But what is even worst is that the Hillcrest post office manager made me wait for an hour and did not show up. What is he scared of. read more

I can't wait until I get all moved into my new apartment so I can go to this post office again. I used to live in Hillcrest and this was my post office. Just like I wish I'd never left Hillcrest, I missed this post office terribly. The employees are polite and do their jobs efficiently and quickly. They don't mind answering questions and helping you mail your letters and packages. In Ocean Beach they weren't nearly as nice. Hands down the most incompetent operation. I essentially handed them money for a PO Box that never worked, never got extra keys I paid for, never got a renewal notice. They never even put my name on the box so I didn't get mail if it ever came in... When I came in for keys, no one told me I was due to pay, so my box got closed and I paid for keys I never got. I've had packages sitting in people's office for about 3 months. Literally every time I come in and use this place it's mind blowing how anything functions. I should be given a full refund for every penny I put into that PO Box and they just offered an apology for the bad service and wouldn't refund me. If you need to have something shipped to you through this post office, I recommend having it sent through FedEx instead. This post office is only four blocks from my home, yet a large portion of the packages shipped to me get lost. Sometimes they are brought over by helpful neighbors from down the street or several blocks away, but many times they are just gone. This past time I was put through the ringer by the post office. My item was marked as delivered, even though it wasn't, so I went to the post office. They told me the item was not deliverable because of a lock on my housing complexes gate. To which I said, you mean the tiny latch that is never locked? I was told I could come to the post office the next day to pick up the item. I came back the next day and was told that the item was out for delivery again. So when I still did not receive the item, I went back and was told that the delivery was successful, but the item must just be stolen now. I was given a phone number to call and told that was the only thing I can do. So many questions. Why did they not hold the item like they said they would if they thought they couldn't deliver it? Why wouldn't they just put it in my locked mailbox to which you have a key? Why of all the items shipped to me by all services is this the one that gets stolen within a three hour period between delivery and when I got to it while there are still other packages in the same mail area unstolen? I understand mistakes happen, but there is no accountability to be found here. read more

I have lived in many states. The actual workers inside this Post Office are Great. My mail carrier who dies 6th, when I lived there awesome. This male mail carrier who dies 1st/Brookes area SUCKS. Our Apt complex does not have an outgoing drop box, so never takes the mail. I finally have a designated outgoing mail box for us and still nothing. Compared to the Normal Heights Post Office, this place is about as extraordinary as The Getty. For whatever reason, the Normal Heights location closes at 5:00PM. I suppose in 1960, that's when the work day came to an end. However, we're well into the 21st century, and I don't know anyone who clocks out any earlier than 6:00PM these days. The good news is, this Hillcrest location "gets it." They close at 6:00PM to give folks a real chance to take care of business after they leave work and battle a commute. Every time I'm there, I swear there's only 1 or 2 people in line. I've never had to wait over 5 minutes to get in and out of that joint, and I've had nothing but stellar service. Not sure if some of these other reviewers caught folks on a bad day... but apparently I've been pretty fortunate. Parking sucks ass, so be careful of the residual road rage in the lot. It happens quite often and I've seen some serious near-misses. read more

I just had the best experience here! The staff was so friendly and despite long lines during holidays/ lunch rush got through very quickly. The woman at the counter was kind and offered solutions for my questions. There was the nicest guy from corporate in for extra help- even offering to help put stamps on my wedding invitations! Uy-uy-uy customer service here is lacking! From the moment you pull into the parking lot, you can sense the negative energy of this place, people behind their wheel are moving aimlessly, you walk in and there's a long line and if you fail to immediately step up when it moves people will skin you alive with their gaze. Finally approach the counter and the mail clerk is passive aggressive. You work at the post office, man, you got it made! If I had your job, I'd be the nicest person ever! Sorry for not knowing which form to fill out, you don't have to be a dick about it. I highly recommend the Automated Postal Center contraption, you could avoid the line, avoid the rude clerks, and take care of your mailing needs. read more

The worst! The absolute worst ever! And they wonder why they are broke! Because you suck!!!! I have ordered from eBay several times in the past couple of years and every time I do, the local USPS worker throws the package over our gate as we live in a gated complex. Obviously too lazy or just maybe too stupid to open the gate and place in the correct mailbox. Instead either myself or a neighbor might find it in the bushes or down the street at the wrong address. I have been lucky a few times to have a neighbor find it in the bushes and place it on my doorstep but other times not so fortunate. This has happened a handful of times and it just goes to show you that the USPS is completely inadequate at delivering mail. Shame on you local Hillcrest postal worker! read more

This Post Office has the Worst Customer Service. Several years back (2004-2007) I used this postal service center (3911 Cleveland Ave. San Diego, CA 92103) as a P.O. Box to receive mail. I always noticed the customer service staff treated people, but disregarded it. On April, 6, 2010, I went there to try to get my passport renewed. Numerous websites and the board inside the postal service indicate they do passports (and renewals). I was informed after I waited in line 20 minutes by one of the 2 employees working the counter they do not do passport services. While in line, I observed the customer service of 2 employees at this postal service center. The manner in which the 2 employees working at the counter treating other staff and customers was appalling and unprofessional. I realize this location has always been understaffed, but the communication, attitude and customer service is very low. While I was in line, I observed one of the (male) employee talk town to his (female) supervisor in front of customers; I found this to be inappropriate. The lack of professionalism at this location should not be tolerated. I will never revisit this postal service. read more

"Going Postal?" That term must have been coined here. The crown jewel is the Asian lady. I think she wakes up crabby and it goes down hill from there. I ordered something from Indonesia that they couldnt deliver. I was left a slip and was directed to them to pick up. Unfortunately, it flew out of my pocket while riding my scooter on the way there so I wasnt able to present it to them. In a clearly defiant manner after asking her if she could check for me without it, the Asian woman went to the back room for a split second, said she coudnt find my parcel and told me they would deliver another slip - she NEEDED that to find it. I would have a new slip within a week. The next day, I get a call (strange, huh?) from a woman who identifies herself as a manager saying they noticed I recently moved and they want to confirm my move prior to delivering my mail. Huh? My move was like 3 weeks earlier. Im getting mail. OK? I didnt return the call. Eight days pass and no slip. I return and get the Asian lady again. I reexplain the situation. She doesnt believe that someone called me because they dont have a female supervisor. Fortunately, I saved the message and played it for her. By some work of magic, luck or actual customer service, she was able to find it without the slip this time. WOW. I ruled out luck after immediately purchasing a lottery ticket and I didnt win anything. Magic or customer service, you be the judge. read more

It's a female , she always look like she has an attitude , 3 times my mail was delivered to the wrong people and it was timely mail I needed.. it's not hard to pay attention to detail when that's your job!!! This post office is terrible through and through. I have had consistent problems with mail delivery - all coming to a head now where mysteriously 4 different collection notices never made it to my mailbox. Obviously I didn't know the debt existed, so now it's on my credit report. Heaven forbid you try to get in touch with a supervisor. They permanently keep their phone off the hook - I've called about 30 times during all parts of the day, and it is CONSTANTLY busy. During a mail delivery issue, I got the runaround for DAYS saying I needed to contact a certain person - when I finally tracked them down (by leaving work early to physically go into the office since they don't answer the phone) I would be told that I actually need to speak with someone else. Nightmare. If you have the unfortunate need to go the the location to mail a package, make sure you do some deep breathing exercises before walking in. The people who work here are ALWAYS rude and seem to have no interest in working quickly or efficiently. The post office should be privatized and these cozy government jobs taken away from people who have no motivation to do their jobs well. USPS is a great idea - but if it's constantly this unreliable, I'd prefer to not have the service at all. I'd be happy to pay 5 times more for a service that is worth a damn. I tried for years not to hate this post office, because I know their job is really hard, and they have to deal with a lot of headaches. But I've had enough. Worst customer service of any post office I've ever been in. The best you can hope for here is bored indifference. And this one guy, mustache, constantly annoyed...I'm in there all the time and this guy knows me, so he can be somewhat pleasant when he recognizes me. But today I was asking about insuring a small package to the UK, and he just gets instantly annoyed with me. Says it's not worth it to spend all the money to insure something that small. Tons of attitude. In any other business in the city if you wanted to give them MORE money they'd help you do it, they WANT your money. But I guess he didn't want to deal with the paperwork, or thought I was just an idiot. And now I'm kicking myself for letting him talk to me like that. I've had it. Let's get real. No one likes waiting in long lines in a small stuffy place. This is one of those places you always have to encounter that. I went twice this week and the first time I was second in line, but realized I forget to write some things and didn't want to hold up the line so I stepped aside. By the time I finished, there were at least 15 more people in line and only two employees. I decided to leave and bought my postage at home instead and went to drop it off the next day. I wanted to make sure everything was ok so I waited in line to drop it off with an employee. He was such a snob! He questioned how I even got the postage I got (ShipNow with PayPal) and said that my package wasn't going to be sent because it was more than a pound so I asked him to weigh it so I could pay the difference. It ended up being .13oz off. I know it's almost a pound more, but in my defense, It felt like air. It was a mere .45 cent difference so he made me buy a stamp. I quickly ran out to my car and he took the next customer which was fine, but when the next line opened he said that they couldn't help me and I had to wait for him. I ended up being late for work that day. Thanks a lot! Oh and the small parking lot is always full. Boo. read more

Went today to get our new company post office box. Already filled out the forms online, and paid, so should be a breeze, right? No. Not really. And the box itself is so full of dirt and dust that I can only presume someone broke an urn in it and just cleared the porcelain chips. But, I digress. Back to me review about the service. No line at all. Went to clerk and discovered she needed to see a copy of my insurance as a second ID. Okay, fine. I go to my car, get the card, and dash back in. Line is now 5 folks deep and the three clerks are grumbling. The guy is bitching about having to work all day Saturday, the center clerk is ready for her break, and the clerk on the end is clamoring for her lunch. (And it's all of 10:15.) By the time I left, the line was 15 deep and looking none too happy about it. And the kicker? The post office was out of stamps. Seriously. Out. Of. Stamps. read more

I have a PO Box here, which is fine, as long as I don't need to interact with anyone. If I need to ship anything I either spend more money at the UPS store on Washington or drive out of my way to the Post Office down on Midway, just because I have had sooo many really bad customer service experiences at this location. Every once in a while I think to myself that I've over-dramatized past occurrences in my head, or perhaps things have changed since my last visit, and every time I think either of those things I regret it. There are one gentleman in particular who I dread having to interact with. He is an older mustachioed man who reminds me of friends of mine from New York. I'll stand in line and hope, "Please don't let me get him, please don't let me get him," which is totally ridiculous. One time this man wasn't even helping me, -I was still in line, and he kind of shouted at me something like,"You have a problem waiting?," which I didn't. Gosh, I don't think I've been in there since that happened... To USPS: I'm sure you're aware of the poor customer service you're providing, and I think it's reasonably likely that you don't care, but in the event you do, and things change, I will happily write a new review. read more

Nightmare post office - do yourself a favor and avoid it like the plague, if at all possible. Unfortunately for me, I live in this post office's delivery area, so if I get a delivery notice, I have absolutely no choice but to come here. Coming into this place makes going to the dentist for a double root canal seem like a trip to Disneyland. There's *always* a 30-to-40 minute wait and *always* a sneering, nasty attitude waiting for you when you finally get up to the counter. One *delightful* recurring scenario I've experienced several many times here has been to wait for 40 minutes in line with a package slip only to find out they don't know where the package is and/or it's being delivered to my home at the exact same time that I've been standing in line waiting like an idiot. If I have a package to ship or have any other post office "needs," I will *always* go to another - *any other* - post office in the entire greater San Diego area rather than set foot in this guaranteed-to-ruin-your-entire-day-and-fill-your-heart-with-seething-hatred-for-your-fellow-mankind place. read more

The only reason they get 2 stars is the nice female worker at the counter who used to work at the OB Post Office. Aside from her and one or two others, it is a bunch of miserable, condescending gov't workers who could care less whether your letter gets there or not. Other reviews speak of Mr. Mustache, who may be the biggest douchebag in the world. I was once scorned in front of the whole line for trying to pay with a $20 or a $50 bill, I forget which one. When I was given attitude and asked to pay some other way, I told him "I am a Manager. Every morning at 9am I go to the bank to insure I have proper change in my drawers for the entire day." Is that so hard? To have proper change in your cash register? Oh heaven forbid you pay with a $20 or a $50 bill. Anyway, I only go here when i absolutely have to. Long lines happen because the whole postal system needs an overhaul, but even if you doubled the quantity of management and staff here it would not improve the quality of it. I simply have nothing good to say about my interactions with any employee or system there and would avoid the place like the plague even if I lived within walking distance. Specifics? I had a stamp that had been misplaced on a package so the adhesive on the back needed to be reapplied with a pinch of tape or drop of glue, the solution any sane person would have chosen. The end result was the staff and MANAGER treating me like the plague, the MANAGER eventually *yelling at me* and refusing to take my business because I put them on the spot for refusing to accept a letter with a stamp that had a 5% chance of coming off with glue and a .05% chance of coming off with tape. Again, avoid the place like the plague even if you live within walking distance. read more

A post office that's open until 6PM!!!! For that alone, this post office stands out from most other post offices in the area that go on strike at 5PM. Be warned, just because this place is open one hour later, does not mean you should wait until the last minute to get here. THE LINES ARE LONG! COME EARLY! Fortunately, the workers and people in line are usually chill and willing to accommodate special needs, for example, when I was here, a working class mother had to ship something really quick and was late picking up her kids so everyone was chill with letting her go first. Awesome! There's also usually a line at the automated stamp-selling machine, but it moves quickly until someone with a billion thing lands on it - then it's backed up for miles. Parking is a pain - the parking lot is way awkward and you literally have to make a 180 degree turn to get into it from Richmond. This is within walking distance from me and I come here occasionally when I have to pick up or drop off packages. Nothing extraordinary about this post office but one of the workers here is good. He is god at his job gets people in and out pretty quickly and knows exactly what to do for most situations. He also throws in some jokes and funny remarks here and there so makes the wait inline a little more bareable. read more

This post office has not been painted or remodeled since 1960. At least it appears that way. I think only the William Taft Station over in Clairemont Mesa could look older on the outside. Parking is getting better here but still can be tight. Counter staff was SLOW at my last visit. read more

The attitudes of some employees at this particular office could use help. (And, no I don't buy the whole federal government worker line -- from very personal experience, that is no excuse for being cranky with the very public that a federal government employee is charged to serve.) For example, I recently needed to send a box to my niece for her sixth birthday. I did the shipping form online and just needed to drop the box off. But, as there was no line that morning, I made the mistake of wanting to confirm that I paid the sufficient postage (unless its flat rate shipping, the postage price is based on the weight of the box). The exchange: Me: Hi, I did the click-and-ship form online and wanted to confirm that I paid the right amount of postage for this box. Postal Worker stares disinterestedly at me and says nothing. Me: Is it possible to make sure that I paid the right amount of postage? I had to weigh the box at home. Postal Worker stares disinterestedly at me and says nothing. Me: Can you please weight the box? Postal Worker (annoyed): That should have been your first question. Ummm, seriously? I'm not saying people have to bend over backwards, but why the rudeness? Ugh, this place always makes me frustrated in some way. There's one guy in particular that I always hope hope hope I won't get when I'm waiting in line. I always do a little happy dance in my head when someone besides him calls "next please" and I don't have to go to him--he's the grumpiest person I've ever met!! Not all the employees here are bad, but they don't always seem to know what they're doing. The manager kicks ass, though: she's smart, competent and friendly. And she dressed up and put candy out for Halloween. Always a plus in my book. Worst service ever. This location REFUSES to scan packages. Even though tracking is a service they offer. I own a company that only gets paid of my packages are trackable. They USPS has already lost or delivered packages of mine that were never scanned at any point and I didn't get paid for it. They have been very rude. When I complained to the manager she said it's not her problem. Then we (my CEO and I) were kicked out and escorted out for voicing out complaints. We did not once cuss at them or call them names and they escorted us out because they didn't appreciate our attitude! WTF?! Disgusting representation of government employees. I realize it's the holiday season and the post offices will be extra busy. But I stood in line for 30 minutes, with maybe 20 people in front of me. At one point, there were 4 employees working the front. That wouldn't have been so bad, had the machine where you can weigh your own package and print the label not been out of service. Really, you can't have someone fix such an important machine at this time of year? Then, my two (fairly small) packages cost $31 to ship across the country and only one is going to make it before Christmas. Inflation for the holiday season, I suppose. I have nothing bad to say about this post office - not being biased just because I work for USPS myself. As long as customer service is on point, then 4.5-5 stars you will receive! There's always a full staff at the windows and they're super friendly! This one clerk helped me and I found out he was from Guam (I'm from a smaller island next to it)! Big ups to Chamorros! And he was so nice. Good looking too, in an islander sort of way. Haha. Anyways, I like this location. Parking sucks big time, but hey, parking is not great in a lot of places so I'm not complaining. If you wonder why the USPS has financial trouble, visit here. Why are people without people skills put in customer service positions? As other reviewers note, you hope you don't get stuck with the black guy. I haven't had any incidents myself, but I've seen a couple of customers really get into it with him. I guess it livens up the wait in line, but it's not a pleasant experience & management should have dealt with the problem by now. Reboot: So I was in the Lemon Grove branch, and I'll tell you what... they were friendly and courteous as they efficiently moved from customer to customer.
