Looking from the front row of the center towards the front door
    William K.

While I am not in the military, nor a civilian contractor any longer, I have been to various USO centers over the years. This is by far is one of the best I've been to, its why I feel its worth five stars, and why I volunteer my spare time here on a very regular basis. There are two USO's at O'Hare Airport, both deserve the five star rating, There is another center open from 6am til 10:30pm at night, in Terminal 3, in the upper level rotunda. But this review is for the 24 hour USO center, in front of security, above Delta ticketing, on the Mezzanine level of Terminal 2. The charter states, the center is open to active duty, reserve, (basically anyone in the Uniformed Services), retired military, and their dependants. To the occasional civilian who thinks their tax dollars pays for all of this, it doesn't. USO's operations are funded solely on donations by private individuals. When I first started volunteering here, the director explained it this way, run the center like it was your home, just ID everyone as they come in. (Anyone that knows me, knows ID everyone that comes to my door.) After signing in, and showing your ID, you can place your bags in our gear room, grab a bite to eat from one of our two refrigerators, one stocked with all sorts of Pepsi products. The other with peanut-butter and jelly, ham and cheese, and turkey and cheese sandwiches, quite often the airport restaurants drop off all sorts of healthy snacks, salads and sandwiches. There is enough sugary junk food here to put the healthiest service member into a diabetic coma, various volunteers source local supermarkets, pastry shops for pies and cakes, and there's a regular supply of fresh flowers in the center. There are three computers on the back wall, but only one works with the printer, there is Wi-Fi, the SSID is a widely held secret amongst non-military O'Hare regulars, just ask the volunteer at the desk how our 'IT manager' is hiding the network this year and how to get on the network, One of the kind but curmudgeonly volunteers (a retired Marine Captain) graciously donated the leather recliners up front. they are by far the most comfortable seats in the center, I want one for my home office! We have a kids room with every imaginable kids DVD's there is for even the most jaded toddler. All in all, probably the best USO you will ever visit, its definitely a favorite of those travelers stranded at O'Hare and considerably better than sleeping on the floor in baggage claim with the homeless populations rifling through your bags..

Wow, all I can saw is WOW! It's very different from the last time I checked into the O'Hare USO. There has been some major upgrades to this place. New computers, couches and privacy rooms. It always amazes me that the USO's across the country are volunteer operated and donation funded. It's amazing what an organization can do when their focus is not making a profit. As always, the USO services, food, books and amenities are free to all traveling service members. If you are in the services which guard our way of life and is stranded at O'Hare (and one day you will be...) you should head towards the L concourse and check out the USO. It's quiet and comfy and they computers in there that will allow you to check your FB or write Yelp reviews (as you can see). If you also need a snack they also have donated food for traveling service members. They used to do some very unhealthy stuff like homemade buttery cookies, cakes, candy of all kinds, but now I see salads and wraps and bottled water. I guess the USO is more conscious about our weigh ins. *Happy Dance* I know I choose to live this crazy, unstable and tough military lifestyle, but it's always nice to come across an organization like the USO in my travels that provide a little bit of comfort.

When you get past the security, you enter a good sized lounge with plenty of food and drinks. Interestingly, every food item is labeled and the labels let you know about any allergens in that item. They also have a stocked bar with various liquors as well as beer and wine. Everything was good. I tried everything I could so the list is long and, frankly, I don't remember everything I ate. All I can tell you is the food was very good. There is plenty of seating, so unless they have a lot of flights going on, you can find a seat. The seating was comfortable and we took a table by the food which we frequented... The wine selection was much better than I expected and I enjoyed some Pinot Noir. This was a great experience - one we don't take advantage of often. So, what I can tell you is it is much, much better than sitting at the gate. :)

These pods are quiet and have charging capability (1 USB-C and 1 115V). Overhead lighting is fully adjustable along with the front facing lighting for video conference calls. There is also an adjustment for the ventilation fan however I have found that, even on the highest setting, they can get warm. There are most of the same food options as the F9 location but on a smaller scale. There are self-serve options for soft drinks and coffee. In lieu of a tended bar, there is a self-serve bar with an assortment of juices, wines and beers. Like most United Clubs, there isn't a whole lot of interaction with the staff. That said, they all seem friendly enough and this location is clean and well maintained. Would I go back? I've actually been to this location a few times now and like it. The reason this lounge was designed as such a large space is due to the fact that there's a lot of people in here. That's just something to keep in mind as a basis for your understanding. In terms of design, this lounge has various types of seating. They have the more comfortable chairs located throughout the various rooms at this lounge. They also have numerous seats that are associated with tables. This is probably best for people like myself, who enjoyed grabbing a quick snack, and having a drink, before it's time to board the aircraft. They also have long desks with charging ports set up for those who want to get some work done. Plus, there are some self-standing seats spread out throughout the lounge area. In terms of food offerings, they have food buffets on two ends of the lounge. Both of these buffets offer a unique blending of Quick-Food, as I like to call it. Is pretty good. I will say, that I've never been disappointed in what they offer. You can always find something to suit your pallet. In terms of drinks, they have drink offerings at both ends of the lounge, as well, in association with the food buffets. There, you can get your expected soft drinks, coffee, and water. If you want alcoholic beverages, you have to go down to the one end of the lounge, where they have a bar. There, they generally have two bartenders. Each of which is happy to give you whatever you want. They often mix drinks, beers, wine, and all that kind of stuff. Many of the drinks are all free. But, if they are, be sure to throw the bartenders a tip. I think that's an important gesture. Some people decide to sit along the bar while they enjoy their drinks. I guess they are just type of people who enjoying hanging out at bars. I don't find out all that comfortable, or appealing, as you're basically elbow-to-elbow with somebody, you don't really know. But, that's just my personal opinion. If I have one complaint about this lounge, it's the fact that it's not really set up for the first class domestic passengers on United. Whereas, is you are flying internationally on United, they use the Star Alliance lounges that are specifically designed for its first and business class passengers. In terms of this lounge, pretty much anybody can get into it, simply by paying a sixty dollar fee. Thus, you get a whole lot of people, Just overwhelming space, without a lot of decorum. Overall, I've been in much better lounges, and I've been in a lot worse lounges around the globe. There's not much to complain about this place, you just have to expect that there's gonna be a lot of people. I have seen it at times midday, when people can't even find a single seat to sit in. So, just keep this in mind.

The food, drink, and service were good -- generally consistent with my experiences at other Sky Clubs in recent years. My favorite feature of this particular Sky Club is the Chicago-style hot dog cart. During our visit, it was tucked away near the secondary bar. Our Chicago dogs were authentic and delicious. If I recall correctly, the hot dog guy said the cart was only meant for the lounge's opening; however, it was so popular that it became a permanent fixture in the lounge. This is my first experience with an airport lounge, and frankly, I could get used to this! That said, while markedly nicer than waiting by the gate, the experience wasn't perfect. There is free food, coffee, and Coke products available. The food involved a hot entree, a couple sandwiches, soups, salads, snacks, nibbles, and desserts. There is also coffee, espresso beverages, and a Coke machine. The quality of the items was adequate. Since airports aren't usually gourmet destinations, I happily devoured everything on my plate. Happy that one is not relegated to McDonald's and can opt for something healthier.a Speaking of which, while you are free to go up as many times as you wish, the plates and cups are very small, needing several visits for those like myself, who have a black hole within their stomachs. Perhaps this is to encourage people to keep their goodies in the lounge, rather than take 16oz coffee cups onto planes. It would still be nice to have larger plates, so I save my steps for the terminals rather than making repeated trips to the buffet... especially since I don't want to leave my property unattended. In terms of the lounge itself, everything was very clean. There is ample seating, and there should be a spot available, but expect to share the lounge with many others. While both the armchairs and [high] chairs are firmer than I'd like, they do beat out terminal seating overall. Also, while not needed by me, I respect that they have "phone rooms" for those who may need to take a private phone call or attend a work meeting. A private room is more for you, though, as the lounge is more chill, without the hustle and bustle of the terminal. Finally, there are plenty of outlets throughout, and the WiFi is faster by miles. All the staffers in the lounge, from those who check you in, to the bartender, to those keeping everything bussed and clean were fantastic! I was about to dust my hands off and leave four stars... that was until I realized that they have an open bar! There's nothing like starting a trip with a drink to get in the mood. Sure, it isn't really free being included with the ticket price, but if I'm already paying for airfare, not having to pay $20 for a small and weak drink is a phenomenal bonus. Last but certainly not least are the restrooms: These were much cleaner and nicer than the rest of the airport. Think of a nicer mall as opposed to "airport." Final verdict: I can now see why lounge access is such a wonderful perk of either non-economy seats or certain credit cards. I love airports because of my love for travel and airplanes, not so much everything else. The United Club is great for making that which stands between TSA and being in the air more pleasant.
