I had my hair done at a previous salon and it turned out horrible. My hair was super bleached and brassy. Just not a good look against my skin tone! So based on reviews, I came here, to Utopia. The first hairdresser did a great job. The brassy-ness was gone but it was still a bit too blonde for my taste. So I called the salon the following day and spoke to the owner. She was nice about it and allowed me to come in the next day. And I am glad to say that I am finally happy and content with the color of my hair. Not too blonde, not too dark. I found it difficult to select the rating to give because I received two services and the experience for each were vastly different. I would give three ratings: 1) The service from Amber as I entered and departed was 5-star. She was warm and friendly and demonstrated efforts to make my experience wonderful. Thank you Amber! 2) The facial from Marita (sorry, that may be the wrong name) was fantastic and I would give it 5 stars. My skin feels wonderful and the experience was so relaxing I fell asleep! The accommodations in this area of the spa were beautiful and I felt pampered. 3) My experience with my hair cut was fine (the dreaded F-word) and if I had only come in for a hair cut I would not be coming back to Utopia. After careful reflection, I would give the experience 1 star - hmmm, maybe fine was too nice a word? The salon area does not give the same pampered feeling - that is OK. And my hair looks just fine this morning - it is very easy to cut as I wear it long. However, the service was poor. I will not go into details here or provide the name of the stylist as I believe this type of feedback should go directly to the owner of the salon rather than to a public audience (Utopia may contact me if they would like further information). I will return to Utopia for a facial and look forward to trying their other spa services. My first time here. I called for a same day appointment. The receptionist was so easy to talk to and got me scheduled with Emily. There was no waiting at the salon, by the time I was served a cup of tea, Emily called me back. I had been wearing my hair long and straight, I was ready for a change. Emily took the bulk of my hair off but unfortunately cut herself quite badly and the finishing touches went undone. While attempting to style my hair the next morning I found I needed a bit more shaping done before I would be able to handle the style. According to Yelp, the salon was open on Sunday at 10:00 so I went in. Lisa the owner was the only one there since the actual time to open on Sunday is 12:00. Had a gift certificate given to me for my birthday. I decided to use it on a gel mani and a gel pedi. Both ladies did a fantastic job and were quite friendly. As I was paying, I requested to have the remainder of my gift certificate put toward one of the ladies tip plus some cash for the other. The receptionist was rude and couldn't figure out how to accommodate my request using basic subtraction. She had another girl lean over and explain what I was requesting. Clearly she was embarrassed, therefore made a snarky comment to me about how she was right the first time (even though I never told her she was wrong). I went to Utopia for my haircuts over the span of a few years. Seems to me like stylist turnover is rather high, as I had to choose a new person nearly every time I went (every 6+ months or so). The last time I went there, not only did the stylist give me a very mediocre haircut, she made a comment to a coworker about coming in to work even though she was sick. No thanks. For me, I'm tired of trying out stylists there, I want to find a stylist that does a good job and I can return to that same stylist again. read more

I decided to try this place out because of the ratings it had. Also, because I really wanted to go blonde for the first time, I needed someplace that was highly rated and reliable. I had a lot of faith this place could finally be the place I could always go to get my hair done. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case and I shouldn't have had my hopes up. My hair originally started off as dark brown hair with some old brown hair dye I had. I know going into this, the process would take 2-3 sessions to lighten my hair to be blonde. The first session was basically washing and "removing" away any leftover hair dye in my hair (which I felt did absolutely nothing for $100. My hair looked completely the same as it did coming in). The second session I had was to start the whole blonde process without using bleach (which was a bit confusing but ok?). But the hair stylist that I had gave me false promises saying she could get to the blonde I wanted, done in one session. Which I highly doubted but she believed and told me she could. But obviously she couldn't achieved it in that session, so I had orange hair. Which was fine, I know that's part of the process of going dark to blonde but my problem was her promising all of those things and then shrugging it off like yeah, it is, what is. Like that was very frustrating and annoying. Plus it was very splotchy everywhere. I had like 2-3 different tones of orangey blonde throughout my hair. But knowing that was just temp, and hoping it can be fixed n even for my next and last session when they actually have to bleach my hair blonde, I left it in her capable hands. So I specifically asked for like a pale yellow blonde hair, she gave me ashy sliver with uneven blonde splotches. I tried so hard to be as clear as possible of what I wanted and occasionally check in with my hair stylist throughout the whole process (which should've been her job) of what the plan was. But I felt like I was completely disregarded, and although the result was ok, it was not what I wanted and this whole time she had her own version of what she thought I wanted. Smh, overall, it was just a huge waste of money for (splotchy) hair I didn't even ask for. Every appointment I had, I left not being happy in my experience. They are very nice people and my hair stylist was very sweet but the lack of communication between her n I was very frustrating. I will not be returning. I also had a similar problem that other people had mentioned in their reviews like the 20% discount off retail service (which they almost didn't give to me because it was meant for "new customers" but I was one) but they only took off $6 off my total bill that was over $100. This place came as a recommendation from one of my friends, so I decided to give them a try. I scheduled an appointment with Alina to do a blonde balayage. I came in having a rough picture in my mind about what I wanted, and Alina gave me suggestions based off of that. I told her I wanted more of a white blonde rather than a yellow blonde and she did exactly that. This my first time having my hair colored, so I was kind of nervous and anxious but when she showed me the finished product I loved it! My hair was blended very well, it wasn't streaky and it was the exact color I wanted! Alina was super friendly and kind, and finished my hair in 1 1/2 hours. It was my first time ever Brazilian waxing, the person who was waxing me (Maureen) was very nice the entire time but when I came home I was really bummed out to see she left so much hair on me :/ honestly she did a terrible job this was my first time here and definitely my last! UPDATE: I just washed my hair 2 days after getting it done and now it's coming off in orange splotches. Definitely not professional. They also told me that they don't recommend bleaching and dying hair which is why they never offered it to begin with even though PLENTY of their staff and clients had horrible bleach jobs or colorful hair, really Utopia? They also made my Mom and I sign a release from as if belittling me because of my age and trying to mooch money from my Mom. I have never heard of a salon using contracts against minors/parents, one word: SCAM. Please beware when coming here, I did see a couple ladies when I were there who's results were actually very pretty. So it's going to be hit or miss here if you're doing corrective color. ALSO I've paid about 110 in the past for a bleach job and a creative color. 150 dollars is ridiculous for the color I have, stop over pricing.. It's not like your a Pearl District salon. I came in here yesterday for a cut and color and I left very disappointed. My stylist Carli did NOT do what I asked. I gave her compliments on the color and cut, but honestly I knew I was going to have to leave a bad review here on Yelp. I brought in a picture of the color I wanted on my phone and my hair is like 5x darker than the picture. She could have at least bleached my hair and then had me come back into to get the EXACT color instead of just bullshitting with me by saying it will look almost exactly like that. So now I'm only content with my hair which is how I felt before I even got my hair done. The color is pretty and all but NOT what I asked for. This whole thing cost $150 and it seemed like I was only paying for what she wanted to do to my hair, not what I wanted to do. I'll just stick with D-Side Studio and never come back here. At first glace the salon looks like any other storefront salon. When I stepped inside all previous opinions were gone. The receptionist Courtney was very personable and has a great attitude, as are the rest of the staff. Overall i had a great time and if I'm ever in the area again I would like to try their other services. Manicure: Rachel was friendly and fun. She had a great attitude and had an awesome conversation. She did a great job on my hands and made the whole experience fun and relaxed. Didn't make me feel out of place. Her being a traveller helped and afforded the opportunity to swap stories. Massage: Viviana did a great job working out the damage my uncomfortable bed had done to me. Like the rest of the staff Viviana was a complete professional. I have been searching for more than a decade for a hair stylist who knows curly hair. Curly hair requires a different approach to cutting, care, and styling. If my experience speaks of anything, it is that most hair stylists are not curly hair friendly or knowledgeable. I found out about Utopia thanks to the Columbian newspapers daily deals. I called up and asked about anyone who specializes in curly hair and came in for an appt. with Chris. She took the time to explain the pricing, the hair colors, and the style she felt would work for me. I have struggled with what style works for my curly hair with my face at my shoulder length. Chris took the time to look at my hair and my face. I felt confident in her knowledge and ability and went with her recommendation on hair hue and style and I have never been so happy with my hair. She even gave me a tip as to how to part my hair so that my smaller eye (the one we all have) is effectively hidden by giving the illusion of raising and opening that eye and evening out my face. I was amazed when she flipped my hair one way and it was clear the eye was minutely lower than the other and then parted it where she recommended and instantly my eyes appeared to be evened out. She also gave me the tip of sleeping on a satin pillow cover to minimize breakage. The color Chris recommended for my hair is the perfect balance of red and brown. I have since had several compliments from strangers on the color and style. I am thrilled with it and the kicker is that this is the first haircut and color I have ever come home with that my husband even liked. I have already set up my next appointment with Chris. She is a wonderful hair stylist and very knowledgeable about how hair can affect the face structure and how to work with curly hair. They have a private parking lot in front of their office and kids cut prices. They also allow walk-ins. Moni and Sierra are awesome! We are never disappointed. My daughter and I come in for nails and hair. Moni is so creative with her nail art. She can think outside the box and even remembered my daughter talking about Minecraft nails the last time we were in, so she was ready for her this time! Sierra always does what I ask, and when I don't know what to do, she always knows what will look different, but fabulous (I like to change things up on a regular basis). I have had my hair and eyebrows done here twice with mixed results. The gal who cuts my hair is very friendly and chatty, and she follows directions well. I wasn't too crazy about my first hair cut (cowlick issues) but when I was more specific about what I wanted the second time, she did a great job! The front desk is NOT organized or friendly, and they have a very annoying system where you have to pay for your hair cut and brow wax (and I assume any other services) separately. I believe that the salon should be able to figure out a better way to handle this without inconveniencing their patrons. Also, the last time I went, the eyebrow lady gave me too much change, and then called me up after I had left and told me that I had not actually paid and that I needed to return to the salon and pay. How annoying. Would have been avoided if I had been able to pay for ONE visit with ONE payment. They also changed my appointment time without asking me and left me a confirmation message as if the new time they had chosen for me was the one I had scheduled. Sloppy. I received a spa finder gift card and used this for a gel manicure. My appointment was 30 minutes late and then the nail technician did a terrible job. My nails weren't even covers with polish on the sides of my nails. They were jagged on the ends like they were never filed. Very disappointed given the ratings that this salon had. read more

This review is for Mo. I've only had waxing services at this salon and after my experience with Mo, I wont go anywhere else. Going to a new esthetician and exposing your girly parts is never is never a comfortable experience, but right when I got into the room with her I relaxed. She is friendly, out-going, talkative and open. She made going through this painful and personal experience so much easier. I look forward to going and seeing her every 2 months. Also want to note that she uses a wax that hardens on your skin and then is ripped off. This was surprisingly much less painful and resulted in almost no redness in the days to come. Four hours isn't enough! I could live at this place if they would let me. I felt blissful and beautiful when I left and have told everyone who will listen about THE best massage ever and my glowing skin and nails speak for themselves. Friendly staff who don't push products on you and prices that make the spas in PDX look outrageous (because they are!) make this my new favorite place in the entire world. The only thing I would like to see added at this place would be better sound proofing (I could hear staff laughing and talking during my massage and facial) and some lunch or snack options for those who can't spend a four hour stretch without eating. I was forced, because of a move to Vancouver, to say goodbye to the salon I'd frequented for about 10 years. I chose Utopia simply because it's close to my home. Since I am new to the area, and to the salon, I didn't request any particular stylist, which is always a bit scary. Fortunately, I lucked out when I was paired with Mercie. I've been to her twice in the past two months and I can vouch for her skill cutting hair. I appreciated her input on what changes I might make in my layered bob hairstyle, and she was eager to make sure that I was pleased with the results. She takes her time, both at the shampoo bowl and the styling station, and is also a pleasant person to chat with. The receptionist and manager of the salon also are very hospitable. I have been here a few times over the last couple of years for massages and facials and I plan to return. I have had very positive experiences here. I have had three different massage therapists and each were great. I have had Mo (Maureen) on different occasions and her facials are 5 stars. She includes a hand/foot rub while your mask works its magic. And she plays Enya....which I really enjoy. Reminds me of the 90's I guess. Just can't beat a facial to Enya. Anyway, I usually plan to book a bit in advance if it is for multiple services or with multiple people but I have had massages booked with some late notice which is nice and not easy to do around town (I know, I have tried). One time when I went there with my sister for massages and facials there was a scheduling mix up and they were really great about it and gave me a give certificate for a massage! I received a Brazilian from the esthetician Mo and I have to say she is by far the best I have been to! She is fast but still thorough and goes as far as to tweeze any little strays left behind (which is usually only one or two). I always feel like a million bucks climbing off of her table. Molly does my hair and she is a true artist. She listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that. VERY satisfied. Mani the nail tech does beautiful designs in her nail art and is always on trends with current styles, holidays and new techniques. My gel manicure lasts the expected two weeks no problem and she always remembers who I am and what I like. Megan did my hair awhile back and she was absolutely amazing! I was going from a really dark purple to a light "ginger" orange, and she pulled it off perfectly. I had called around to other salons and they insisted it would not be possible to accomplish that drastic of a color change in one day. When I received my bill after my appointment I was in SHOCK to find out it was even MORE than I normally pay, I told the receptionist what I had been told yesterday and she said she did not know anything about it since she was not there yesterday. She did not even try to find out what I was told and she could not even tell me the break down of the prices I was charge. I am very upset about this situation. I was in sticker shock and I hope this is not a new tactic they are using to make more money. I just got a much needed hair cut here. I called at around 12:45p and luckily there was a cancellation, so they got me in at 1:15p. The atmosphere is nice and peaceful and the service is great. I used the restroom down the hall and passed multiple spa rooms for nail services, massages, etc. on the way. I haven't purchased any of these services here, but the ambiance seemed very fitting. Niki cut my hair, and like I said, I was in dire need of a trim. It's been about two years since I've had a hair cut, and the last time my hair was cut, it was by yours truly. Needless to say, I wore my hair up for a couple of weeks, but it eventually grew out and looked okay (lol!!!). My hair feels so much better now. Niki and I talked the whole time, about life and all of its ups and downs. She made me laugh and worked quickly and efficiently, and the end result was great! The haircut was VERY inexpensive because I didn't request a styling. In fact, I was actually surprised when the front desk associate quoted me a price. Other than that, I did browse the website for different services, and they seem reasonably priced for what you get: good quality products and services! There is ample parking for this venue and it seems conveniently located (I'm not from this area), as there are many stores and a freeway entrance nearby. I started going to Utopia and was booked with Nikki. She seemed really nice. She did my hair a couple times, I had her do full platinum weave so I could accomplish light silver hair with a couple blue strands. On mother's day I had an appointment to achieve it because my hair was finally light enough.I did have about an inch or two of grow out but, that was included in the look I was going for. I brought a picture to confirm what I was trying to achieve. Nikki seemed confident in the process. When she was mixing the batches she said she made too much because she couldn't get the calculation right and was glad her boss wasn't here. I didn't think anything of it at the time. When we were done, I knew something didn't look right. My hair was brown, towards my ends was more of a dark silver or purple with some blue strands. I told her it didn't look right. She mentioned the lighting and that it would also lighten up. She also said if I didn't like it, let her know and she would fix it. I got home and my husband right away asked me if that's what I was going for. I knew that this wasn't going to settle and lighten up. I called the next day and left a message for Nikki. Another girl called back and asked if she could help. I told her what had happened. She said she would talk to Nikki and call me back. After several back and forth calls, pictures, etc. Utopia would not fix my hair 100% they said the best they could do is put 12 foils in my hair. That's after they consistently denied that my hair wasn't messed up and I told them I went to 3 other stylists,who I told my story and showed them the picture of before my hair was touched, a picture of what I wanted, and had them look at my hair. All 3 confirmed that what I wanted and paid for was achievable and that Nikki did not complete that. I usually don't write reviews, I just don't want someone else going through this. I feel this company is very unprofessional, will not admit their mistakes, and will not make it right. It cost me $265 for a color correction with another stylist all for a mistake by utopia. read more

I did really like my hair cut & Colour with Megan but was misrepresented with the eyebrows. I paid $425 for Eye Brows & Eye Lashes and when they could not do my Lashes they gave me $125 credit. I tried to make an appointment for the followup appointment because my brow had faded and they told me it would be another $70. for the followup. I have since talked to many salons Portland to Seattle and they are $250-$300 with followup included, every one of them. Make sure you get it in writing because they just add more charges $$$ read more
