Overpriced, but very clean and a HUGE selection. Any East Asian food you could possibly think of, they have. Very convenient to get to as well if you don't have a car since it's right next to the International District Light Rail station. I've bought sashimi grade sushi from Uwajimaya a couple times as well, and I highly recommend their king salmon and their toro. Some cuts have far better marbling than others though, so it might take a bit of time to pick out a good piece. read more

Uwajimaya is a great Japanese based Asian supermarket...and I'm gonna let y'all in on a little secret. In the back of the supermarket next to where they sell fish, there is a great poke selection! The poke bowls here are some of the BEST I've had. The market cut out the middle man and makes some of the best Poke Bowls, there is a 90% chance that the poke here is better than your local poke joint. Five stars for nostalgia. Gather 'round, children, and I'll tell you the story of little Maria, whose grandmother would shop at Uwajimaya in the late 70s and early 80s. On lazy summer days, Maria would climb the rickety stairs of the old location to the second floor and scout for anything related to Hello Kitty. Every visit ended with a box of Botan rice paper candy, white rabbit candy, Pocky sticks, or Haw flakes. My love affair with Uwajimaya has never ended, even though Old School Maria scoffed at the closing of the first Seattle store, subsequent move, and each addition thereafter. A recent visit revealed a completely revamped store with wider aisles, a spacious, clean, vibe, and an updated aesthetic. Even though I'm an old school purist who misses what the ID once was, I have to admit that I dig the new renovation and look forward to spending more time there. Every time I'm close to the ID I just *have* to stop in for a snack, a pantry staple, a food court fix, or a pen (or 7) from Kinokuniya. Some prices are comparable to the Asian stores closer to home, and others are more expensive. Currently because of the pandemic you must enter the store through the middle entrance and exit on the right (if you're looking at the storefront... which is where you'd normally enter in the past). Don't forget to bring your parking ticket in to get it validated at checkout! And don't sleep on the pre-made meals in the deli section. We recently brought home soba noodles, shu mai, and humbao--all of which required some cooking and everything was delicious. Here's to many more Uwajimaya memories! read more

5 stars for making it feel like I was home (the location of home doesn't matter this is a feeling thing) once you walk thru those automatic sliding doors and into the food court (idk if there are other entrances) i felt a sense of peace. Sure it was organized chaos with Black Friday or whateva but it was so calming and peaceful to me The home feeling kicked in when I seen poke for sale, they had Hawaiian BBQ and mochi donuts. There was a Thai spot, other noodle shops and of course a tea and smoothie spot I was at home The thing I liked the most was finding spam musubi and some beef bowls ready to go. I was so hungry I got a little something from all those things mentioned above. I was so full and so happy and so tired cuz a lot of food does that to you This was our first time to Chinatown in Seattle and we're already planning our next trip based off our experience here. I think 3.5 stars would be more accurate. I do get most of Japanese groceries here, but there are a couple of things I am not completely happy with about Uwajimaya. First and foremost, despite the size of the store, their selections of Japanese groceries are not great. Uwajimaya started out as a Japanese grocery store (http://www.uwajimaya.com/about/history), but it is now an Asian grocery store. So, they sell a lot of non-Japanese Asian items. I believe in inclusiveness, but, as a Japanese person living in Washington, I want Uwajimaya to offer more authentic Japanese items just like H-Mart does with Korean items and 99 Ranch Mart does with Chinese items. Also, some items, such as Kibun oden ingredients, are ridiculously overpriced. In the food court, there really isn't a Japanese meal option either unless you buy a bento or deli items from the store. I do realize that there's a taiyaki/takoyaki place and a cream puff place, but those are not meals. Another issue with the Uwajimaya food court is that they close it one hour before the store. Once the food court is closed, their bathrooms are also closed for customers! When I visit Los Angeles, I go to Mitsuwa Marketplace. Their Santa Monica location is not very big. I would say the grocery section is almost like a half of that of Seattle Uwajimaya, but they carry pretty much anything Japanese I want. Humongous international supermarket with focus on Asian/Japanese goods, seafood, produce, snacks, and home goods. They have just about anything you could think of at an Asian grocery. Everything is at a premium price for the wide imported selection, clean organized store, and quality items. Got some sashimi (frozen and thawed varieties) to snack on. They also have an impressive selection of sake, alcohol, Japanese snacks, toys, and souvenirs. Don't miss the kinokuniya, huge store but expensive as usual. Uwajimaya needs to improve customer experience at self checkout. I had a terrible experience as I was approached by the customer service person for the self checkout area as I was scanning my purchases. The woman started digging into my bag of oranges and asking me if I had mixed different types of oranges together. I asked her why I would do that and she said that it looked like some of them did not look the same. I proceeded to ask her if she would like to check each one as I did no such thing. After I started to pull each orange out to show her the sticker and told her to check each one, she backed away and said that was not necessary. Obviously it was and she thought I was hard up and wanted to "cheat when paying for 5 oranges." I am so offended and upset that I was approached and questioned in such a rude and offensive manner. Uwajimaya should close the self checkout if customers need to be policed and grilled as they are scanning purchases. read more

I love getting groceries here, and they have a great selection to choose from! However, I got a sushi roll from their prepared food section and there was a gnat flying around inside the sushi container which really grossed me out :( the cashier was equally grossed out, and let me go in and pick out something different. You can never go wrong with Uwajimaya! I like all of the locations, but this one is my favourite. They have an abundance of foods that you can't get in a regular grocery store plus a bunch of adorable home decor and trinkets. I really appreciate that pretty much everything is clearly labeled in English. If the original package doesn't have English on it there's almost always a sticker on there to help me out! They also have a sizable food court area where you can get all sorts of fresh made goodies for lunch. Prices are hit and miss. There are some things I can find at the regular grocery store for less while other times Uwajimaya really takes the cake and provides a higher quality item for much less. Love this supermarket. Reminds me of the Mitsuwa in San Jose. This market is huge and carries everything. There is a deli that sells hot food, and sushi, seafood market. All the Japanese products that you can think of. They have a houseware section that sells chopsticks, ceramic wares. They had a lot of Xmas cookies gift for sale at this time too. Very easily accessible via the light rail train located in Chinatown/ international district. I wish I could stay here in the store forever!! read more

I was a victim of assault and battery there yesterday. The store hired Iron and Oak Security to do their security. I paid for coconut water. My bank can confirm the transaction and their video footage can also attest my purchase. So, can one of their cashiers. I was in a rush to leave the store, because I trying to catch a bus. Three of Iron and Oak Security guards grabbed and tackled me against my will. I didn't have any weapons nor was I a threat to anyone. Those three security guards may have injured my shoulders. I was traumatized. When I showed those guards my receipt, they didn't even have the integrity nor decency to apologize and ask if I was ok. This is the 2nd time they have been overzealous with me. I have discovered many other people have been rubbed the wrong way by Iron and Oak Security. I went back later that day to the store to let the store management improve the situation. I was outraged and appalled at their response. I talked to a pudgy woman manager and an Asian manager. I was given a very canned "we're sorry" response. The Asian manager didn't want to hold Iron and Oak accountable. He wanted to talk to their supervisor "so they can be retrained". This wasn't a minor mistake. What the security guards did to me was completely unacceptable! I guess that Asian manager values the relationship with Iron and Oak rather than their customers. That Asian manager didn't want to hold those security officers accountable. That response shows a lack of integrity. Iron and Oak Security has made this store a police state. If you bring a tote bag that you bought at another store, then Iron and Oak security will immediately assume you are a shoplifter. If you are a fast walker, then they will think you're suspicious. If Uwajimaya lets Iron and Oak Security officers physically hurt their customers, then their store is truly not safe. Don't go to Uwajimaya until they get their integrity back and kick Iron and Oak Security out of their store! read more

We splurged and got a lot of treats, especially drinks, because why not?! The one thing that I bought mostly as a joke was canned banana bubble tea, and it's somehow DELICIOUS. Located in Seattle's relatively small Chinatown/International District stands the MASSIVE Uwajimaya Asian Market. Like any good Asian market, the produce is abundant, with a huge assortment (including the usual suspects like Unoki mushroom and Dorian; as well as all the American staples such as tomatoes, etc.), all at incredible low prices - produce inspection is really a good way to judge what to expect from the rest of the store. Amazing meats (love me some ox tails), fresh including live fish, and marinated meats. Aisles and aisles and aisles of dried goods! Japanese, Korean, Chinese - a variety of products imported from all parts of Asia/Southwest Asia regions; albeit Uwajimaya houses many more Japanese items than most comparable markets - which is great because so many can be hard to find - some items I've only seen in Japan before. Fantastic selection all around! There is one full section in the market that is dedicated to selling non-food items such as toys, cookware, etc., including some imported summer yukatas - sadly very cheaply constructed and WAY overpriced. Also, they do not carry and obis, and the only "geta" they had were these fake foam ones. :/ In fact, everything in the non-food market was priced uber high! If you're just looking for some Japanese or Chinese Import items, or just like to spend some time perusing fun and interesting items such as disposable underwear, save your money and walk across the street to Daiso (like a 150 Yen store). Didn't try the food court, as I had dinner plans at a nearby restaurant, but there are many stalls to choose from and the food looked and smelled pretty good. :) Overall: if you live in the area, THIS is your place to shop for to get what you need to make some wonderful Asian dishes...but skip the other stuff and find a place to buy somewhere else. My cousin introduced me to to Uwajimaya back when he used to live in Seattle. I love this Asian grocery store! I can always find all my favorite items at this place. Unlike other Asian markets, this place does not smell like fish! This is the only place where I can find those travel size mini soy milk. Whole Foods sometimes have them, but they are more expensive and slightly bigger. The ones that I buy here are perfect, TSA approved, and only cost .79 Cents. I love a fantastic find. They also have a wide variety of dishes at the food court, and I can always find something vegetarian here. I love their tofu dishes! The bookstore that is attached to the grocery store is also a fun shop. The only reason we stopped in here because I am Asian and I need my scrubby cloth! And if you are Asian, you know what the heck I am talking about. I thought I packed the Almighty Nylon scrubby that keeps Asian skin glowing like a nuclear radioactive reactor but unfortunately I forgot to pack it for our trip out to Washington from Hawaii - and a regular wash cloth will not do! This store totally reminds me of a place in Hawaii called "Marukai" - an Asian bulk warehouse with retail prices. If I knew there was a location in Renton we would have went there, but instead, went here (we also wanted to hit up Ikea). It appeared after hours as the "Chinatown" this was located was a bit empty and bare. Confusing as to where to park and street signs were even more confusing. Do you have to pay for street parking or not? I went to college, and I STILL couldn't figure it out so we just left the car on the side of the street and went shopping. Come to find out, you still need to pay for street parking after hours. Because of the uncertainty of whether I had to pay for parking or not coupled with the fact that I had to pee really speeded things up in the store. Even taking the pics of Uwajimaya was an act in concentration! Speaking of bathrooms, the nearest stall was a long ways off in the cafe area. WAIT what!! Get the Code! You can't use it without the CODE. Oh geeze. Walking around and around trying to find someone who knows the CODE. Sheesh. I did end up buying The Scrubby Cloth. I also bought some Japanese yogurt drink for my son and looked at my credit card charge online after the fact...a little over $13...hmmm. Guess we pay for convenience. Incredible grocery store with an incredible food court! The prices and selection are unmatched anywhere and definitely worth a stop over in the international district. I definitely want to highlight the food court here. There is such a huge selection from sushi, to Chinese, to Vietnamese, thai and Filipino, (sorry if I missed some!) And the take away style Chinese food I had was superb! Inexpensive, filling, and very delicious with MANY options. My partner had sushi and it was also incredible for take away style. Whether you are walking through the aisles finding food & snacks imported from oversea's, or checking the import store connected to Uwajimaya for hidden gems you normally can't find in the US, it is always a delight finding something here. One of the things you might have encountered but did not think to get is there ready-to-go hot meals. I was curious to try their spam nigiri, so I grabbed a few. Spam nigiri is easy to make while requiring minimal ingredients. However, if done correctly it can be one of the best thing you can eat. Cooking the spam with teriyaki sauce & rice vinegar, caressed on top of a portion of rice, & bonded together with seaweed, Uwajimaya pulls this off flawlessly. The spam was well-done which made the flavor of the other ingredients flourish. This is definitely a quick on-the-go meal I will get again in the future, & can recommend to others. read more

I love this little Asian market!!! It's conveniently located right downtown Seattle next to the stadiums and also is right next to where the bolt bus picks up/drops off! The flagship Uwajimaya store is great. It is conveniently located in the I-District and is large and clean. Something that can not be said for some I-District grocers. It definitely has helped to destigmatized Asian foods. There are several vendors in the same building like Daiso, Samurai Noodle, Kinokuniya, Chase Bank and the food court which makes it a super one-stop place to go. The produce selection is excellent and I like they have a meat counter which carried marinated meats. They also have an extensive seafood selection and deli. The Bellevue location is closer, but I go to this location for a better selection. Yes, prices here can be a little high. But I think the ambiance here is good and I usually look at the weekly flyer to see if there is anything worth making the trip to Seattle for before going. In closing, it is not a real trip to the I-District without a visit to Uwajimaya. read more

Y'all I can't. I couldn't take pictures cause I was to busy taking it all in. This store is amazing, everything we lack in the city of San Antonio. Produce, freezer, sundries, beauty supplies, wine & saki, candy, a small food court and an amazing book store. I was even able to purchase a Maneki-neko and a few Daruma as I've never seen them around SA either. The book store had a 30 minute shop time to allow for social distancing, and that made for a very quick shopping experience that likely had us missing a lot. Uwajimaya is THE SPOT. Even though I don't live in Seattle, every time I come through, I stop by. I absolutely love the selection of food, drinks, and gifts here. Also, there are other vendors surrounding the grocery section that are awesome as well. For example, Kinokuniya which not only has legit Japanese crafts, but also the upstairs section for anime goods. If you go here, you should definitely get the Uwajimaya grocery bags. They're only $5, but have awesome patterns created by local artists, and they are quite sturdy and well-made...I wish I would have purchased more while I was there. read more

The mother of all Japanese supermarkets, this Uwajimaya location is impressive, extensive, and massive. The prices have slowly crept up and the parking has become almost impossible on the weekends, but people are still coming to check this place out. Similar to its smaller sister in Portland, there is an incredible amount of variety here for Asian groceries and its a delight for all of those who are looking for something not found in traditional western supermarkets and are too intimidated (read: disgusted) by the little shops that sell the same thing at cheaper prices. Beyond the groceries there is also a clothing section and restaurant within the store now. It seems like its becoming an mini mall as Its already in its own little village where there are noodle shops, barber shops / stylists, and tailors surrounding the store.
