Vace is delicious! My husband and I regularly order out on the weekends; we have only tried the pizza, but you won't be sorry if you try that. They carry wines, sodas, snacks, and various ingredients if you are wanting to have a home-cooked authentic Italian meal at home. I know this may be an unpopular view, but if you're placing an order for pick-up, prepare for it to take a longer than expected. We've been told several times that our order would be ready in 30 minutes, and then having to wait 20-30 minutes after arriving at the scheduled time. Another thing that somewhat bothers us, is that the owners/workers are not super polite; they can be curt and do not provide any sort of compensation for mistakes or exceedingly long wait times. However, I did want to include this because I know quality of service is important to many. We still can't give up the pizza, though :) read more

After reading the reviews, I thought that the pizza gods had descended from the heavens to shine on this place and produce a perfect pie. So I stopped in and got a pizza a few weeks ago and well... 'Meh." Yeah, just ok. Sauce was a little weird, crust and price were good, not enough cheese, and overall, kind of bland. Might try again with more/different toppings and see if it grows on me. So why the stars? Heavenly meat and cheese cannoli. Best I've ever had. EVER. Moist, well seasoned, creamy, with homemade pasta. It is SOOOOO GOOD. This review is only for their pizza. I started going to Vace when I was an undergrad at AU almost 10 years ago. I would walk down to Cleveland Park grab a couple of slices and eat them quite unceremoniously on the curb in front of the store. It was heaven. I recently moved back to DC and Vace is still going strong. Their pizza is just as good as I remember it. Sometimes the flavor you want won't be ready for another 10 minutes. I always go with an open mind and get whatever they have available, because all of their pizzas are that good. Enjoy! read more

THE. BEST. PIZZA. PERIOD. I grew up in NY, so when I came down to DC finding good pizza became a top priority. I can safely say that Vace's pizza is the best pizza I have ever had in my entire life. And it's DAMN CHEAP, especially when you consider the quality of ingredients and the size of the pizza itself. The ingredients are always fresh and delicious (try their artichokes. trust me.) Somehow the pizza is never greasy. Maybe it's because the sauce is on top of the cheese instead of in its traditional location... or maybe it's because of some sort of pizza-magic. You can also get imported coffees, pastas, Italian deli meats, wine, and the same dough, sauce, and cheese that they use to make their pizzas. (After all, they are an italian deli.) But, I must admit I only go there for the pizza and sometimes pick up a bottle of wine to go with it, so I can't judge these things. In short: If I was about to die, but could have one final meal before I go, I would have Vace's pizza. No doubt about it. And I would die a very, very happy woman. read more

Vace has the best pizza in the world. You are probably thinking that is a ludicrous statement to make, but let me back it up. I have had the best pizza in Rome, the best pizza in NYC, and the best pizza in Chicago, none as good as Vace. There is nothing like it, the sauce the cheese it is all amazing. My recommendation. The pizza is good. I usually stop in when I'm walking by to get a slice, which is under $2 and very tasty. Considering you can get about three of these slices for the price of one huge POS from Boli's, it's enough to recommend Vace heartily. However, my partner brought home a frozen pre-made dish from Vace yesterday that was downright awful. This eggplant parmesan cost $7.50, took 50 minutes in the oven to cook, was not large enough to feed one person (maybe if you provide your own pasta) and ranged from bland tasting to disgustingly inedible. Many large cities (excluding D.C.) have a plethora of small Italian restaurants where you can walk in with $7 or $8 and get a massive eggplant parmesan dish over spaghetti or in a sandwich served to you. If Vace's had been some kind of cut above I wouldn't have minded the restaurant level price and having to cook it myself, but this was truly bad. I have also tried one of Vace's frozen sauces (something nut and cheese based) which was decent, but cost enough that I probably won't get it again. Sandwiches are pretty good and a pretty good value. But think twice about the frozen dishes. read more

One of the reasons I miss DC and the Mid-Atlantic during my foreign sojourns is simply because of the sandwich. Nowhere in the world except here will you come across the plethora and diversity of mouthwatering bread, cheese and meat combos, hot or cold, fried or baked. In this cozy patch of Cleveland Park, the Italian sub is king. (The redline Metro, one more stop north from the national zoo.) This Italian market called Vace's is an unassuming but friendly and inviting spot- They've got it all too. Fresh made pastas, cheese raviolis, tortellini, ground beef lasagnas, eggplant parmigiana, gelatos, and tiramisu, all ready for take away and or an authentic italian evening at home. Just take a gander at the lines to be found there sometime, it'll make you want to know what all the buzz is about. When I look at all those fresh deli meats that are sliced fresh per order, all of those staple provolones and creamy mozzarellas, all of those savory salted anchovies, and all of those brine-cured black and green olives and I confess that I am impatient with long-lines. I order an Italian sub and for just around 8 dollars I get one of the best. Eat here and you'll have a taste of ambrosia in the form of great bread stuffed with special cured meats, imported cheeses, cherry peppers, thinly sliced onions, shredded lettuce and a sprinkling of olive oil and vinegar. PS-Love you all but seriously- get rid of all that old, dusty, meat hanging from the ceiling it does your business a bad image. Solid pizza. We just moved to the area and have ordered pizza from here twice so far in the past month. It's definitely our go-to carryout for the neighborhood. First we had the pepperoni and sopressata pizza - it was very good except the grease made the crust a little soggy. But...that's what we get for wanting all that meaty goodness on our pizza. And, the meat was sooo good, totally worth a few spots of soggy crust. The next time we got pizzas for a group - pepperoni pizza and a spinach/mushroom/onion pizza. Both really good. Like I said, a solid pizza place. I agree with the confusing wait times people have commented on previously. The older woman apparently likes telling people 15 minutes when there is no way it will take less than 30 minutes at 7pm on a Friday night. Like this place a lot. Went first to use it as a deli, picking up pasta and sauce, all home made and excellent. Next time i went back, two slices of pepperoni, which were delicious No problems with the service, friendly and quick. Quality of produce is high!!! read more

What a disappointment. I went to Vace in DC after reading all the great reviews. Sparsely packed shelves of Italian items and very few selections of Italian meats. They have only two types of Prosciutto, domestic and imported. The same is true for Provolone. What?! I was really looking forward to getting a pound of San Daniele and super Sharp Provolone - no way will you find it in this place. These guys should check out Claudio's in Philadelphia and consider re-branding. The pizza is ok - a little greasy. Thin crust is not really very thin if compare to Brooklyn pizza. The sauce has nice flavor, but overall nothing to cheer about. read more

Not known for its customer service --- kind of reminiscent of the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode, but maybe not quite that bad. But it's a good pie. Not the best in the world but pretty darn good and for the price you can't beat it. You can buy a whole pizza at this place for the price of two slices at other places in the District. They've got other goodies like homemade pasta, mozzarella made daily on site, and lasagnas and the like that are pretty good too. read more

SEVERLY underrated pizza here. The white onion is one that I seriously recommend. The crust (which is always an important part of my pizza) is light, not overwhelming, and does the job. Its a family favorite. Honestly I have not tried many other things in the store because I walk in and smell the pizza and well...its a wrap. There is a bit of a wait, not a lot of space, and there is no place to sit down with your pizza AND no delivery - thus the missing star. Otherwise, a real gem of the 'ol Connecticut Ave. There is also a credit card minimum for those slender days when you only want something small. So just make sure to have some cash if you are just stopping by for a slice. read more

Last night, my sister and I ordered a large plain pizza. It had 8 slices and was enough for 4 people. The pizza was good, and even better after being in the fridge. I'm used to NJ pizza, so it was different, and the sauce was placed on top of the cheese, but still tasted good. The cheese was a bit stringy, so be careful. Just remember that you have to pick it up at the store, and they don't do delivery. As for customer service, they were friendly, fast, and my pizza was done when I arrived 25 minutes after the order. Little hidden gem in DC. Great pizza and general italian food and we all know its hard to find good pizza in DC.

Obsessed with this place. I used to live in Philly and miss all the hoagies and sandwich places the city had to offer. Luckily, this place kinda hits the spot. They have the best subs and baklava in the Woodley/Cleveland Park area. Fresh Italian bread, generous on the toppings and meat...and only $6! Such a great deal. Just beware of the rude older ladies...they "helped" me out the first time I visited this place, and I was close to not returning because of their attitude. If possible, try to get the younger guy to make your sub sandwich. He's super friendly, and he makes the perfect sub each time. I've also tried the baklava and their empanadas. Delicious! Those sell out immediately on the weekends so try to get their early in the morning. read more

I love this place. They make fresh thin-crust pizza with just the right amount of sauce (sparse), cheese (little) and toppings (for the taste). The toppings are on top of the cheese which is on top of the sauce. The crust is crunchy. Besides the best pizza in town, Vace also sells fresh pasta, fresh pizza dough, sausages and cold cuts, frozen dishes like lasagne and canelloni, and sauces including not so common varieties like walnut sauce; all are amazing. read more

We LOVE Vace pizza!!! This is by far the best carry out pizza in town. We're moving out of the neighborhood and all we can think of is how much we'll miss our $9 hot circle of awesome!! Well done Vace!! They also serve some interesting wines, Leffe beer (my current beer love) AND a ton of other homemade goodies. If driving I recommend a 2 man operation for picking up Vace. As much as it pains me to do it, Vace is getting docked a star. I am inclined to agree with Basie B, the food is awesome but their service sucks. Last week I went in to get a turkey sub and asked for some salt and pepper on it. The guy tells me "yeah we don't have that". You don't have salt and pepper?? Are you sure? Pissed me off to be honest. But what really "grinds my gears" to quote Peter Griffin was my experience last night. I called in an order at 7:50 pm. I was told it would take about 20 minutes. No problem really. I walk over from my girlfriends' apartment which is about 5 minutes away. Stop for a beer at Cleveland Park Bar and Grill, then traipse into Vace around 8:05. They are closed! Lights on, people closing up shop, etc. I ask "Hey, I'm the guy who placed order #93, I have cash can I just pay? Was told rudely, "nope, we are closed". Obvious question- if you close @ 8, why even take the order? Or just tell me "ok, but we are closing in 10 minutes." I would have driven and made it! Pissed me off. I will be back (Vace is that good) but the experience is going to make me give it a month or two. read more

Sure the staff is rude sometimes, but that's all part of the charm of this little place. I don't understand why every single American I meet acts as though people who serve them must grovel about like some sort of indentured servant. cleveland park - i must try all the restaurants here before i leave dc. vace came up in the convo with my roommate one night and we took a stab at it. ordered ahead of time and got there to pick up our pizza. definitely can't be shy about your order and make sure you pay attention for your pizza order! usually at dinner time, everyone is picking up their order so they all get excited to see if the pizza box is their pizza box. what is nice is that the lady will open up the box so you can double check it is the right one. i usually smile and grab it before anyone else tries to claim it. great experience and great pizza. love the crust. I've lived in DC for almost 10 years, and am originally from the NJ/NY area. Have had many, many different kinds of pizza in my life, including in the DC-metro area. This is, hands down, my favorite "traditional" pizza (e.g. not gourmet, 2 Amy's style). Consistently great pizza. Good bite on the crust, sauce is flavorful but not overpowering. Free to go wild on the topping selection, soppressata is crispy, not too greasy. Recommend calling in order ahead to pick up, parking can be a little challenging but worth the effort. Vace screwed up my last three uncomplicated orders. Most recently I ordered one white and one plain cheese pizza and they gave me two pepperoni pizzas and then refused to make me a plain cheese pizza, claiming they were out of pizzas! While waiting to pay the woman behind the counter reduced another customer to tears! She was viciously mean to this poor customer while the rest of us stared. I first started going to Vace about 1992, so I know the place well, but the quality has run down so fast that I'm never going back. read more

Probably the closest thing to an old fashioned Italian deli in DC. The pizza works better as a slice than as a pie, and the white pizzas are better than the tomato based. The sandwiches are good & very reasonable. The frozen pastas are good but not exceptional--the sauce tends to be a bit on the bland side. Perfect place to get a snack after visiting the Zoo! Vace's has been my favorite slice for decades. No seating but easy to grab and go especially when you're hungry and looking for a quick bite. Now I also swing by to get one of their gigantic sandwiches (Italian Cold Cut is my favorite) or to buy some fresh pasta or pizza dough for dinners at home. Always a great deal and quality product. I will call in and ask for a Focaccia sandwich with Prosciutto and Fresh Mozz with everything on it, LTO, hot peppers and Oil & Vin, eat it soon or it will get soggy, but it can't be beat. All pizzas are good, extra cheese pie is awesome, white pizza with onions and spinach is top notch. You can get creative with the toppings, if they sell it you can pretty much get it. Prosciutto, Goat cheese, and artichokes is my choice. And check out the frozen raviolis for a tasty quick meal. read more
