We recently were in vail and came here and rented 2 ski doos with a guided tour with our 9 and 12 year old girls, and it was absolutely breath taking! Formerly called "Piney River Adventures," this guide-led adventure company produced an AMAZING day aboard a snowmobile. After struggling with poor ski-conditions across the valley, we decided to give snowmobiling a shot (for the first time ever). Vail Valley Tours picked us up from our hotel and delivered us to the take-off point for an adventure we won't soon forget. Patrons can elect to elect to drive your own snowmobile or ride on the backseat (as my spouse did). Within moments of arrival we were speeding off towards a beautiful, wide-open alpine meadow (snow-covered of course). We spent several hours exploring hill and dale with Bo, our guide, leading the way. While holding safety paramount, he fueled our enthusiasm for adventure and, after getting more comfortable, we were really zipping along quite briskly. This was our first experience with snowmobiles and we had a blast. We were picked up at our hotel and enjoyed every minute. The staff was efficient and friendly. Our tour guide Beau was an absolute class act. He provided excellent instructions which made us comfortable. We took the 3 hour tour with lunch. Great place. Only issue I had was the tip. When I paid, I was not asked if I wanted to leave a tip. I HAD to leave a tip. The lady at the front desk holds the screen and gives the option to leave a 20% or 25% tip and clicks it for you. I am a generous tipper especially if it is well deserved, but all of this is done before you even touch the snowmobile or interact with the guide. How are you supposed to know how much to tip without receiving any services? I've never tipped at a restaurant while being seated by the hostess. It just seems like a shady practice that I dont like. All places hand YOU the ipad for YOU to pick whether or not you want to tip and how much. Not here. Its very uncomfortable. Be aware of that if you decide to visit this place. I ended up giving a $100 tip for 2 snowmobiles; 2 drivers and 2 passengers. So if you dont want to give 20% of your total, I suggest you decline the tip on the ipad and just tip how ever much you really want to give to the guide in cash after the tour (Not sure if she'd deny that but I was NEVER told the 20% tip was mandatory to be treated that way). Who knows where those $100 really go anyway so you're better off giving it personally to your guide. I saw on here other people had the same issue, including a friend I recommended the place to a few weeks later. I wish I wouldve known prior to going. Other than that, the scenery was beautiful and the machines worked nice. Great experience. read more

Backcountry tours took a group of us out for an incredibly fun day! The trails we went on were beautiful and exclusive and Chuck was the perfect guide. We had very tasty lunch/snacks at the yurt which was a wonderful experience in a cozy ambience for all of us to gather and enjoy the views. Booked an afternoon trip with these folks a couple days ago, and our group had a fantastic time. They were so nice and accommodating. Beautiful back country scenery. Half way through the ride they have a yurt for warming up by the fire. I didn't catch her name, but there was a super friendly young lady at the yurt that served snacks and warm drinks. She really seemed to enjoy her job, and treated us like we were VIP guests. I highly recommend the half coffee, half hot chocolate. Our tour guide, Bo did a top notch job as well. He's been giving these guided tours for many years and really new his stuff. My wife was apprehensive at first, but Bo did a great job of making her feel at ease. Plenty of opportunity for beautiful picture taking, and an all around great family experience. Can't recommend this company enough. Do yourself and your family a favor and book a trip with them next time you're in the Vail area. read more

First snowmobile experience = great! Took a group of dudes for a bachelor party to Vail Valley Tours for a 2 hour snowmobile excursion with Gregg. Everybody loved it. They picked us up on time at our apartment and took us to get fully equipped. After that, Gregg took us through trails, meadows, and an open area where us guys just booked it around a pseud-type race track. It was a great time and also includes a warming up session with hot chocolate and cookies in a yurt. Great time. Great guide. No complaints all around. read more

Legit snowmobiling place. Located very close to Vail, just across the highway- they picked us up in their van. We did the 3-hour tour with lunch- highly recommend. Nice groomed trails, beautiful views of the Gore Range and the front side of Vail. Lunch was good...vegetable lasagna and salad/garlic bread with hot chocolate. My only complaint was that the snow was so deep in this field, where the guide let us freestyle, that my sled got stuck lol. The biggest things I liked was the off-trail riding opportunities, and the groomed racetrack play area next to the lunch/warming hut. The guide had no problem with my speed and shenanigans after I jammed on the brakes to intentionally fishtail the sled which resulted in me getting tossed off...sled was OK, no issues- very cool guide. Wife loved it too. Definitely recommend! read more

This place was the ABSOLUTE WORST!!! We stayed at the Sebastian in Vail. We were to be picked up at 2:15. We waited in the hotel lobby, checking in with the concierge to ask what the van, car or whatever was coming to pick us up looked like cause it was already 2:30. They said they hadn't come yet. They apparently pulled in and left calling the hotel that they "couldn't wait any longer" which was a complete lie. The hotel had to drive us to their location because the person never showed... things happen and since the hotel was so great to take us we weren't bothered. We went on the tour which was very ok. However when we arrived back the man checked out machine and said we had "hit something". The steering cable was sliced... we could have driven off a cliff!!! He was shocked we came back ALIVE. To make it worse he tried calling the SHERIFF!!!! If we didn't pay for the machine on the credit card which I have yet to check. It was a disaster!!!! Fighting, yelling... I simply said if anyone on the tour saw or said we hit something I would gladly pay. We were in the front of the group and I Know on all things good and holy nothing was struck with the machine. It was nearly impossible cause it's all open... so we get back and the guide says he's gonna take the machine up the mountain to see how it rides... he comes back and scratched up the machine, I told him to his face that he scratched it up and he simply said I must have not seen the scratches... I had taken pictures before he took it up the mountain, it was so sad... it was horrible what these people tried to do... I'll check my credit card but all their threats as of now went unfulfilled!!! The Sebastian thought this place was ridiculous as well and what they tried threatening calling the sheriff and throwing me in jail if I didn't pay for the machine was sad... luckily I have a in house attorney who set them straight and backed them off... NEVER EVER GO HERE!!!j read more

We had a fantastic time with Greg! He took his job seriously, but injected a little humor too. The price was well worth it and a bit less expensive than other options I looked into. We saw some of the most amazing views of areas we'll probably never get to see again! The stop at the yurt was pretty cool too and the warm cookies were a nice touch. :) Also, we didn't have all the warm gear we needed for the trip and the staff graciously let us borrow pants, boots, gloves and goggles - some of which were their own personal items. I wanted my husband to experience the real Colorado and I crammed as much into our 4-day trip as possible. The highlight of the whole trip was snowmobiling with Vail Valley Tours. We had such a great time on the 2-hour snowmobile tour! They picked us up at our hotel, provided us with everything we were lacking to stay warm (snowsuit, helmet, boots, goggles) - we bought neck scarves, which I highly recommend! They were a lifesaver for our cheeks & lips. You can bring your own or purchase one there. The snowmobiles are new & include heated seats & hand grips. They are comfortable and easy to drive. My husband and I shared one and it was very comfortable for us both. On the back meadow we had time to take a few spins around the "track" so we took turns driving, but I was content to ride on the back most of the tour and take pictures. There is a stop halfway through for a hot drink, snacks, and a restroom break (porta-potty). The scenery is beautiful and the guides were always willing to take photos of you. Great tour - we'd definitely do it again. read more

Just got home from Vail and was enjoying the video of the BEST snowmobile tour ! ! Vail Valley tours exceeded our expectations. We were picked up at Marriott and delivered to pick up point. Our guide Greg took us on a awesome VARIETY of trails that you do not get on other tours, I have taken 2 others in Rocky Mtns. We also were taken to a Yurt with hot chocolates and warm peach cobler. At the Yurt there was a large oval race track we could open them up on and race each other.... it was a blast. Then taken on trails that took in some amazing views. Greg was very cool and provided some area knowledge and names of all the peaks in view. I will do this tour again next visit. read more

On 03/07/17 we had a wonderful snowmobiling 2 hour adventure with Vail Backcountry Tours. The staff was very kind and helpful with all aspects of this trip. The new machines were an ease to operate, with a very comfortable ride. We were able to see some beautiful mountain country as the weather was perfect this day. They were in a new operation sight, the facilities were very nice. The stop at their yurt was great, some snacks, a hot beverage, and a warm fire. We went on a 2 hour snowmobile trip last week and it was great! Gregg Haggen was our guide. He took us on lots of different terrain. We got comfortable riding on snow covered roads, went through small trails and by the end we were able to ride around fields. My wife and i shared one snowmobile and took turns driving. Both seats were very comfortable and warm. Gregg would stop occasionally to check on the group so it left plenty of opportunities for us to switch. You stop at the half way point to warm up by a wood burning stove in their cabin.... and they provide snacks and hot chocolate. We had a great time and got to see some amazing views of the local terrain and Vail Mountain from the other side of 70. Worth the money and we were really glad we did it. I recently celebrated my 50th birthday out in Vail with 30 of my closests friends and family!! The highlight of our trip was our Vail Valley snow mobile tour!!! OMG, talk about fun. fun, fun!! Beautiful scenery, great guide, delicious lunch, we are from Wisconsin and had several seasoned snowmobiles in our group and they were blown away by the experience! Safety was thrown out the window with our adventure with this company which resulted in two major problems for riders in the group we were with. In our opinion they did not choose safe trails and their guidance consisted of going fast, period. The worn trails they chose did not reflect the melting snow. One couple fell into a collasped hole about 3 feet deep created in the middle of the trail and it took over 20 minutes for the guide to dig them out. Our guide (only 1) stayed out in front and left everyone behind to fend for themselves. One of the riders crashed into a tree (the last rider) when the trail collasped between two trees. It took them over 10 minutes to start to retrieve this rider. Going at super speed between two trees just wider than the snowmobile created conditions for all riders that was just plain dangerous. This 2 and 1/2 hour long ride was well over 3 hours with a lot of time waiting for the "guide" to correct problems in our opinion they created. We have never seen such disregard for safety and lack of concern for customers. To even get to their trailhead riding the machines we had to endure them taking us over raw rocks, ice, mud, and huge puddles of open water. My wife was that last rider and it took them over 10 minutes to get back to see if she was OK. This is the first and last time my wife said she would ride a snowmobile. With more care this could have been avoided. read more
