I absolutely love this Vallarta Supermarket in Whittier! Whenever I go, I find everything I need, and I always come across great deals, too. The produce is super fresh and has a huge variety, just like the meat, cheese, and chicken--all top quality. I love that they have a special section with a wide selection of Mexican sweets, and the bakery is amazing with a huge assortment of sweet bread, bolillos, and cakes for any event. Plus, they prepare ready-to-eat food like rice, carne con chili, various dishes, hot tamales, and a variety of aguas frescas. You can find most of the products you'd find in Mexico in the aisles, making it a great store if you're looking to feel at home. They even have a seating area with tables if you'd like to eat there. Stopped by Vallarta Supermarket during my lunch break to pick up an asada burrito I ordered, and honestly the service was way too slow. Lunchtime is obviously one of their busiest times, so you would expect the food area to move much faster -- especially when most of the food already looks premade and ready to go. There was only one person helping customers while several other employees were standing behind the counter. Management really needs to improve efficiency and customer service during rush hours. People come here on limited lunch breaks expecting fast and convenient service, but unfortunately that wasn't the experience today. I am extremely disappointed and upset by what I witnessed at this market. While I was there, I saw a new cashier employee doing a good job, but he needed help with one thing. No one was around to help him, and when he called the manager, Raquel, over for help, she seemed mad and bothered instead of being patient or supportive. Raquel asked him how he was doing with the produce codes, and he honestly said he was getting better but still needed to look at the sheet by the register for help. Instead of encouraging him, she got upset and told him he needed to memorize all the codes and not look at the book. She then compared him to herself, saying that when she first started, she memorized the codes fast and never needed help. As a customer, this was very uncomfortable and upsetting to witness. The employee was clearly trying his best, and there was no reason to embarrass him in front of customers. A new employee should be trained with patience and respect, not made to feel bad for asking for help. After seeing how management treats their employees, I do not feel comfortable supporting this market anymore. I will not be returning, and I hope the owners take this seriously because employees deserve respect, patience, and basic kindness at work. read more

1) rotisserie chicken in the box not the bag is salty as heck. 2) tortilla masa (one time) was so soft the tortillas wouldn't keep their shape and was incredibly hard to press 3) pineapple pieces in the raw al pastor was rancid. It's obvious they add the pineapple later but it was already bad because the meat was fine 4) guacamole has zero flavor. No salt and no lime. Seems like they use bagged avocados and not fresh. 5) salsa taquera, zero flavor. For "hot" it was not spicy at all. This review is for the Deli side. I don't know how to rate them anymore. So I gave them a 3 stars. Today the cockles I like were gone the empanadas I like gone. But I'm getting used to that. So I decided to have Menudo and a Mamey drink. You have to order it first then you pick it up. You can look at the food but you have to get in line to order. Then you can't go to show them what you want. Do I did that. I ordered my menudo and my drink. Went to pick it up and got my menudo. But then I had to go back to where I started to get my drink. The girl looked at me shaking my hands in a drink gesture. And remembered she didn't make my drink. I had to let her know what size and what I ordered. She then frantically made it. Only perfect if I was in the desert in the middle of summer. It was 70% ice. A couple of swings and was empty. And all I've got left was ice. The menudo was good and it comes with warm tortillas and extra side toppings. Like onions cilantro and lime. That's why I gave it a 3 stars. read more

DO NOT shop here, they apparently do not check their inventory very well. I was shopping in this store and decided to buy a couple of Lean Body protein shakes. I got out to my car, after shaking the first drink up I opened it and took a swallow and felt a couple of small lumps go down my throat. I immediately started looking for the expiration date on the bottle and found that it expired Jun 22, 2025. Today is Sep 7, 2025. How does a product that expired months ago go unnoticed? I recently ordered a two-tiered wedding cake, a separate deluxe red velvet cake, and chocolate covered strawberries and marshmallows for our 40th wedding anniversary party. Marisol took her time to answer all my questions and take all my specific requests so that I was 100% pleased with the entire order. We ordered a custom cake from the bakery two days before the day we needed it which was on 7/15. We requested it have "Happy Birthday Jackson" on it. Instead, they wrote "Happy birthday JACKON." Our pick up time was at 4:30 and the party was at 7pm. It was a horrifying discovery and an embarrassment. I know it is also our fault for not throughly checking before leaving. But seriously. I love tamales, but the tamales at Vallarta are a rip off unless of course you like eating masa. The worst I ever had.

I was disappointed in the the action or practice of overcharging customers for something by sharply increasing its price, especially in order to take advantage of sudden high demand of eggs. I was charged 11.99 for one dozen eggs, my husband picked up a few items that totaled $68.65. I didn't make a scene at the register regarding the price of the eggs and what I noticed overcharging of the other items to avoid embarrassing my husband. In addition 15 cent for plastic bags when it's customary 10 cent. It's the principle of the matter not the 5 cents. I take the time to record my experience with the community to help the public to make better choices and not to allow price gouging. I understand a business has to make a profit but please don't take advantage of the community. I will not patronize Vallarta Market again. read more

AVOID THIS PLEACE AT ALL COST! What a huge let down. We are from out of state and came here hoping for good service. We ordered chicken and carne asada party trays for 200 for our daughters wedding on a Thursday September 7. The wedding was Saturday September 9th. When we asked how many a trays served the ladies at the counter had no idea and were condescending with their answers. However, they assured us it would be ready by 6:00pm Saturday. We arrived at 5:45 to pick up the food. By 6:00pm nothing was ready and they proceeded to tell us were out of the chicken we ordered TWO DAYS PRIOR. Are you kidding me!!!! After 50 minutes late we got whatever they had which was pork and carne asada. This was a huge miss for the wedding! Our guests started to leave out of hunger. We spent $1400 for food not ready and not what we ordered. WE WILL NEVER EVER RETURN TO THIS PLACE AGAIN THEY RUINED THE WEDDING !! Word to the wise do NOT order food here!!! I guess it had been awhile since I'd been inside a Vallarta, so I was pleasantly surprised after seeing how clean and nice it was inside. My favorite thing about this store are the grab and to go items available. It comes in handy when I'm having family over and we need a lot of food on short notice or for events. I also love their tortilla bar, ready to go ceviche, jugs of agua frescas and their food bar. I've been recommending my family and friends here. I would expect great service though for such a nice facility, and unfortunately you get ignored at times when waiting on the deli side. The prices also tend to run high here. I ordered rice and beans for the family (a few containers) came out to $50. I love it for the convenience. read more

I had previously reviewed the tamales here (one-star), though I do enjoy most of the services (4 star!) and the variety of products at this store, I come here when I want a good selection of items at a relatively low price, especially items I cannot get at other markets. I went to Vallarta for some chili, hojas, lard, and Maseca Corn Flour to start making my XMas tamales. I make my own masa, but I have bought prepared masa here, which is okay, I just usually end up 'tweaking' it to my liking (subjective folks, I know) if I buy it, as well as adding some of the chili sauce I make, for flavor and color. While walking by the prepared masa, I happened to notice that there was a red-looking masa preparada next to the regular masa, the package said it contained guajillo chili, which I'd never seen before. I thought maybe this would save me some time so I bought 10lbs ($25) of this masa and went home to start making tamales. When removing the masa from the package, it seemed particularly dry and cake-ey, but I was sure I could tweak it to my liking. It also had a particular smell to it, like too much lime, except the ingredients didn't contain lime, so I attributed it to the vinegar in the masa, and the texture was 'weird' (I've been making tamales for 45 years, so I sort of know what store-bought textures there are out there, which I buy when I get lazy haha). Long story short, got home, made the tamales, cooked up a batch and the masa was terrible. Only way my family could describe the taste is 'bitter'. My chili/meat/green olive filling is very flavorful, but the flavors were sort of masked by the awful taste of the masa. Rather than throw 6 dozen tamales away, we just poured on some Tapatio and finished our dinner. I usually make some for neighbors and relatives, who look forward to them each year, but there is no way I can feed these to anyone else...I have my 'reputation' to uphold haha. I've already started boiling some more pork so I can go back to work, kind of upset with myself for being lazy, but also for buying so much masa before doing a 'trial run' of a dozen tamales or so. Had I done that I would have saved myself hours and hours of prep and assembly and cooking. read more

I don't frequently come to Vallarta. But after a bit of shopping I was famished and decided I needed to eat. There are very few quality options for food at The Quad so I opted for Vallarta. I want to start off by commending the cashier. In one short interaction, I got a person who was professional, polite and had impeccable manners. Thank you, Ray, for your quality service. The environment reminds me of when car washes used to have small restaurants attached. It's not fancy but there is character. I love the bright primary colors, the music blaring overhead and if you sit, you get to watch people people make tortillas and other traditional food. I had a chili relleno burrito with side salsa. Both items were flavorful and tasted as they should. I also had a watermelon agua. Again, it tasted as it should. The food is traditional. Vallarta is not experimenting or coming up with new cuisine. If you are looking for basic, good food then this is the place for you. read more

Compared to most other hispanic markets in the area, the one thing that stiod out to me the most was that this store is VERY clean. There's no foul odors when you go near the meat section, and everything is organized very well. We rarely do come to Vallarta, but would rather do so even if it's further just for the simple fact that it's again, much more cleaner than other similar markets and you don't have to worry about having to pick through rotten produce or having to throw up whatever you ate earlier because of any stench. Kudos to the employees for taking pride in their work and ensuring a pleasant experience for the customers, and for having great prices and sales on food items. We came here for cherries, not expecting tobfind a good selection, and we were kind of right, since there were only about 8 bags left, BUT we bought three of those bags because they still looked great. I know the last time i went to another market to get cherries, they had a huge amount of them, but everything was molded, mushy, or outright rotten. I expected to find the same here and this is one of those times I'm glad i was proven wrong. read more

This review is solely based on the bakery. I purchased a container of empanadas with Bavarian cream with the date sell before May 4th. I brought it home and opened it and all the bread was furry and moldy. Nothing was noticeable because of how the empanadas were laying in the container. Sadly, this store is about an hour drive from my home. I had gone to Whittier for 2 reasons. Vallarta was one of them. Pet peeve is trusting that something being sold is consumable and ends up gabbing to be thrown away. Wasted food AND wasted money. read more
