Food: I ordered chili verde, which came with rice, beans, chips, salsa, and a side of tortillas (you can get either flour or corn). The food was amazing; lots of flavor! From 1997 to 2000 I lived on T Street and went to this place often. Some days I would ride my bicycle over there. Their food has always been good and they serve you a lot of it. Corina's chili rellenos were huge and served on a platter that was the largest plate I have ever seen in a restaurant. We ask what they had on draft and sadly they don't have draft beer. Every place needs to pour draft beer in this day and age. Maybe it's time for a little bar remodel to accommodate kegs? This is the first reason I can't give a full 5 stars As I said she ordered the rellenos and I ordered the 2 taco combination plate, Beef tacos in fried tortillas. They brought out a bowl of free chips and green salsa. The salsa was good in spite of not being spicy enough. The chips were also good and there were a ton of them. I ask if they had a spicier salsa and he said yes the red sauce and he would bring us some. The red was marginally spicier, but not by much. It did have good flavor as did the green. But, I want my salsa to kick my ass and this was weak sauce for sure. This is another reason I can't leave a full 5 stars for Vallejo's. Meals came out and they were humongous! Corina's platter was giant and would have dwarfed the largest turkey on T Day. My huge tacos were packed with shredded beef that was nicely seasoned. A salad and the standard rice and refried beans. The beans looked good, but were a little short on flavor. Some cumin, garlic, and salt would have made them muy bueno. Three strikes and you are out of my 5 star range. Sorry In addition to the serving being large another good feature is there are BOGO coupons available in all the discount books. Bought the groupon and used it last night. It was 9:15 and they close at 10pm I felt rushed to order and when the lady took my order, after telling her what my son wanted she reached for the menu. I told her I have a groupon and I'm going to order more food. I got some tacos and continued to point to another dish since there's $30 worth of Groupon but she reached out again. So I just felt rushed. I asked for horchata and they said they don't have any. I asked for a spicier salsa and they only had the green salsa. I'm not sure I've ever been to a taqueria with only a green salsa. :( 1 salsa for a taqueria? And its watered down. The tacos were greasy and awful. The burrito came out within 2 min so it looked like they just threw a bunch of rice and beans together and wrapped it. Nothing is fresh. The carnitas was ok. I asked to separate the guacamole, pico, sour cream since my son is 5 and he doesn't like it touching his food. It came all together so had to pick it out. Irony Is... SITREP ..having lived next door to this location of Vallejo's for 9 years and never reviewed it. THE SETUP Okay oKay. It's not like I *forgot* to review it when I was living next door to Vallejo's because that was from 1996 through 2005 - or basically, before Yelp existed...for the most part. At least Yelp was not really up here in Sacramento (no community manager then) since it had BARELY gotten out of SF and made it's way to L.A., Seattle or even NYC by 2005. In fact, I actually didn't become a Yelp-user til 2010 when the smartphone app first appeared on iTunes. So..... THE MENU ...I've enjoyed 20 years of this Vallejo's now, because even though I moved in 2005 and it's no longer next door, it IS still only 7 blocks away from work by power-walk. [That's not to say I haven't been a huge fan of the Vallejo's-family of restaurants: our work-team is always at the Vallejo's on 11th & O a couple of times a month. My daughter and I went there after seeing one of their post on IG. The Macho Jumbo Burrito was mouth watering and so delicious to the taste. So the post lived up to the picture. Melissa ordered the Chimichanga and that girl loved it. Service was great and seating I noticed was every other table. Loved it and felt comfortable. I've been to this restaurant several times over the year's. the food is very good, and reasonably priced. My kids always order the nachos. The plate is good size and there's enough to share. It was a Friday night and I was craving a Big Dave's Mulita. We arrived at Vallejo's around 7:00pm so they were still super busy. We got seated right away but the tables were so crammed in the dining room we were basically sitting with our chests at the table. There was little room to get up or move around. Despite the squeeze we decided to stay. Since they were busy, service was a little slow but understandable. I ordered the Big Dave's Mulita while my husband had the enchilada special. I really enjoyed the chips and green salsa while we waited for our entrees. The chips are warm, thick and crunchy. My mulita was filled with a layer of steak, pull pork, fresh vegetables, cheese and guacamole. This is the only thing I get here since you can get everything else on the menu at any other local Mexican restaurant. Service was alright. Food was good. The dining room was crowded yet there was still a guy playing his guitar around for entertainment. My advice, come early or during not peak hours. This is the only Vallejo's location with the Mulita on the menu. read more

The meal was delicious. There was something for everyone's different taste. The staff were very friendly. Restaurant was easy to locate.

Not only is this place better than their 3-star average, they have a limited amount of outdoor seating, under cover and with the biggest infrared heater that I have ever seen. We were very comfortable on a chilly day. Plenty of free street parking nearby. But let's get to the food. On the lunch special, our food arrived piping hot on HUGE platters that are as large as I have seen anywhere. Great food, well prepared, generous portions. This is truly a family-run place with a long history in Sacramento, and they know all about hospitality. A little slow during C-19 , but that means it was a great time for us to go. read more

The food at this location was just mediocre to me. My coworkers and I ordered lunch takeout today. I got the two taco combination plate for $11.99 before tax, which is a bit pricey for the quality of food received. Also FYI, the lunch menu prices on their website didn't even match what it was in person! (It was more expensive in person - they need to update their online lunch menu.) My chicken tacos were watery - how does that even happen? I've never had that happen at other Mexican restaurants. I needed to use two separate plates for my two tacos before my flour tortillas got too soggy from the liquid dripping out of it. The refried beans and rice were ok. My coworker got a veggie quesadilla, but it had zero cheese in it! We called the restaurant afterward to follow up, and the guy who answered said it was "impossible" that it didn't have cheese in it. After reassuring him three separate times that there was absolutely no cheese in it, he offered to remake it for us. The only positives I can think of from my experience here were that we used a Groupon, and the ladies who rang up our order were really sweet. Simply the lady said she understood me so when I got my plate it was in Styrofoam in a bag to go so I said no problem I'm still gonna eat it here, so after that, I asked the lady for chips and salsa she said we have to charge you because you got your order to go. I said I asked you to make my plate for here after I ordered to go and you said OK so I waited on my chips and salsa. She said we can't give it to you, so after that a couple walked in when I was getting ready to leave and they sit them down and I seen them bring them chips and salsa so after that walking out the door I asked him so the chips and salsa is free when you eat here they said yeah after I finish my food, they said do you want chips and salsa? I said no only reason they've said that is because we was in front of the couple and they didn't want to look bad but there's a guy in here name, Jose, he's a great guy. Came around noon and ordered a small nacho, I didnt want onion so I got nothing but canned beans and a small amount of shredded chicken on chips. Total was $12.50 and it took about 10 minutes for me to rush home to the TOILET! I paid to much to have to sit here barely making it to the pot just to flush my 12.50 down the toilet. Ladies stare as they walk by like your crazy for not having a huge group with you, gave 1 green salsa (yuck) and a bowl of burnt chips. This place USE to be good, now your paying to sit on the toilet as you write your review. Taco bell doesnt even do this! Will NEVER come here again. Decided to go for dinner with my family, there was a total of 7 of us. Upon arriving we got directed to sit at a dirty table we had to ask them to please clean it. Afterwards they dropped off complimentary chips and salsa. However the older gentleman kept asking if we wanted guac we declined politely a few times but he kept asking and it almost seemed like he was pressuring us to say yes so eventually one person in the party said okay, he then proceeded to being out two cups of guac. I didn't think anything of it at the moment because we were all so into the conversation. Its took quiet a while to get the waitress to take our order and when she finally came to the table there was almost an sense of attitude in her voice when she was taking our orders. Again we just let it go because we know working in the customer service industry things can be difficult. Once we were about done with our meal the check gets dropped off we asked if we can split it up because people in our party wanted to pay for certain groups of food. When asking if it was possible they said no at first and asked to take everyones card to the back which i was not going to do because they didn't even ask who needed what amount charged to what cards. After having this discussion for 10 min one of the members of the party just decided to put the whole bill on their card and figure it out afterwards. After getting charged for the meal we were able to take a good look the receipt and seen the guac they were pressuring us about was $10 each and they had gave us two of them. Not only that but there was an additional $30 charge for gratuity that pertains to having a party of 8 or more mind you we a party of 7. When asked about the additional $50 they had no explanation of why it was done. I have no problem with paying for things i have ordered but i felt like the entire night we were pressured to order certain things other than what we wanted. Almost makes it seem like your pressuring you guest to spend more money than what they were expecting. Not happy with what happened here and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else! read more

What a dismal experience. This place used to be great for a quick Mexican lunch when you're downtown. It has definitely gone downhill. The food was mediocre at best, the house-made ? salsa tasted like it came out of a can, and the service was sluggish. I ordered a Carnitas tostada and probably never had a more bland carnita. The pork seemed to have absolutely no seasoning, although the fresh produce pico de gallo garnish was okay. My daughter ordered a pork tamale and same problem with under seasoning. The Gloppy tomato and cheese sauce that they drowned it in was just off tasting. If you had your eyes closed you would barely know you were at a Mexican place. Both the rice and beans were a major disappointment. I can make them better and I'm not even Mexican. Where is the seasoning? And the rice was mushy. Prices were too high for what you're getting. Also, the final nail in the coffin, their chips were like cardboard. Definitely not going back. On the plus side, we ordered a shrimp taco salad to go which my daughter liked, and she is picky about her shrimp. However, as you can see in the photo, the presentation and packaging of the to-go order was laughably bad. It crushed the taco shell. So sad to see this place has gone downhill, it was Never As Good As the main place on 11th and O but now it's not even visitable. Save your money for a top notch place like Carmelitas in old fair oaks, or for a quick bite, dash thru Adalbertos drive thru on Greenback. read more

I haven't tried anything else, but I can tell you this...Any true Chicano can tell a good Mexican restaurant simply by there menudo and if they serve home made tortillas. This place has neither. In fact the menudo seemed as if it was under cooked and not cleaned. There was no flavor to it and it tasted as if I was eating tripe in water. Sorry to report the tortillas are store bought (gross)! They messed up our order and then got angry at us for asking for what we actually ordered from them. Worst customer service I've experienced in Sacramento. Don't go here. We ordered from Vallejos online for delivery. They have a confusing menu that defaults to a la crate and charges extra if you want to get rice and beans, but we paid the extra for rice and beans with both orders. Nevertheless, the orders did not come with rice and beans. What was really the problem though is when we called to ask them to rectify the mistake they told us we were wrong, and when we showed that we had paid the extra the woman literally pretended not to speak English and then started to yell at me on the phone. It was the worst customer service I can imagine. This place is clearly mismanaged. Do not waste your money supporting badly run business. Tres Hermanas is right down the street. read more
