Sigh...keep giving this place a 2nd chance; NO MORE... Friends over for B-ball game who wanted Hackney's. I told them they haven't lived until the VL Patty-melt... Ordered 2 Med-rare---they gave me 15 minutes (the place wasnt even busy). I got there 2 minutes early, then waited for 10 min till they brought my food. My family has been going to Valley Lodge since around 1986. We've always dined-in, but due to the current worldwide virus situation, dine-in is not available until further notice. So my family took advantage of Valley Lodge's offer of curbside orders yesterday. So glad we did! We phoned our order in, and then they brought our order to our car next to the side entrance door. We ordered 2 Corned Beef & Cabbage dinners (which also included potato and carrots) and opted for French Onion Soup as our side for both. We also ordered a Rueben with Broccoli as a side. Everything was exactly the same as if we had dined-in. They even included the complimentary 2 chunks of bread and butter! So, the same excellent and gracious service, and the same delicious food! Thank you, Valley Lodge, for adapting to this unusual situation so smoothly and quickly, so that us customers are still well fed! Fellow patrons, please tip as if you were dining-in, if you have the financial means to do so. Love Valley Lodge, can honestly say I've have not had a bad meal here. Problem is we love so many of the apps, we get full on those. For apps, saganaki, shrimp, french onion soup, gyros and pretzel bites are our favorites. I know that's half the menu already! For entrees, we like the mini filet sandwiches on pretzel buns, the chicken kabob with rice is great - so moist! Don't even like rice a lot and the rice it comes with is outstanding with the lemon butter sauce. So many options you can't go wrong, great cozy family atmosphere and even if there is a wait they do their best to get you in as quick as they can. read more

When the fireplace is lit it gives the dining room a cozy atmosphere and makes it feel like a lodge. I really like the service here. So far it has been welcoming and attentive even though we came in pretty late one time and another time we stayed a long time chatting with our friends when the place was packed. We were never pressured by the staff and were made to feel our business was appreciated. The bar looks like the regulars enjoy it and I'd like to go back for drinks, apps and music sometime. They offer a wide variety of American and Greek dishes. I had a very good shrimp scampi special once and good chicken kabobs. Good wines, salads, our friends enjoyed a steak special. White tablecloths make it feel special yet it still feels comfortable/casual. read more

My wife and I got acquainted with Valley Lodge through some friends. We began going for their Ribs Specials! They have good fall off the bone ribs that are second to none in this area and we went there recently just for them. We can't eat a full slab, but get one and pack what we can't eat home for another meal. We think of the extra cost as groceries, so a full slab really isn't that expensive. It's a friendly atmosphere and the wait staff seems to be nice. Lots of people in one room gets a bit loud at times, so we correspondingly tend to speak up a bit louder. I am very sorry to give this 1 star. We have been patrons for years and loved it prior. Recently we dined here and the food was not good, the prices are too expensive especially when I've compared it to fine dining restaurants, and the service was sub par. Been living in Glenview for 21 years and never thought to try this place. Then friends from Glencoe went there and raved about it. So we went with them last night. Its a happy bustling old school cozy place with attentive service. The bar is well stocked with top shelf libations and rendered most excellent Manhattans. We had the greek style skirt steak specials and started with salads. Both were fine. The fries that came with the steaks were a little soggy but that may have been our fault for gabbing over our salads. Given these turbulent times, going to Valley Lodge last night was refreshing. The menu is old school but there is something for everyone. We shall return. read more

Food was delicious. Husband had the salad with half-pound cheeseburger on it & he said it was a perfect medium rare. I had turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing & pea pods. An unusual vegetable but delicious. Everything was seasoned perfectly - not just salt & pepper! Best stuffing I've ever had, including my own! My only criticism is that the restaurant is so NOISY. We tried to sit outside but told it was full, waiting for reservations to arrive. With food that delicious we may carry out next time to avoid that noise! read more

Great outdoor space in back however two of us ordered prime rib French dip and requested on the leaner side. It was at least 50% fatty and tough. I have driven by Valley Lodge Restaurant hundreds of times for many years and this is the first time that I've finally decided to try it. I took my daughter out to dinner for a pre-start of school treat on a Sunday evening around 8:30pm. The place has a big parking lot behind(and on the side) of the restaurant so no problem with that. When we got inside, a staff greeted us right away and we were seated in a booth near the bar. It is dark inside but the TV screens in the bar sort of light up the place a little. There were a couple of booths occupied and the bar area was almost filled with regular customers who clearly knew each other and the bartender. My daughter ordered the LODGE BURGER with regular fries and it was huge and thick. I had a bite of her burger and it was actually delicious...with pieces of bacon, mushrooms and onions and melted cheese on top of the juicy patty. I had the CAJUN SHRIMP OVER LINGUINE which came with Creamy Chicken & Rice Soup(my choice). The soup itself was enough to fill me up. It was rich, with big chunks of chicken and it was good. My dish was good as well although I was expecting it to be a little more spicy. The sauce was not too heavy and the serving size is definitely big enough to share. Eating the complimentary delicious raisin bread that they serve on each table, I had to take half of my pasta home for my son and my daughter took half of her burger home as well. Overall, the food was good with big portions and the service was friendly, efficient and wonderful. It's just really dark and I guess they want to keep the old, "taverny" style interior so the place looks and feels outdated but at least the furnitures and fixtures are not run down or neglected:) read more

Proceed with caution around dinner times especially on Friday and Saturday because this joint gets crazy busy. We were there early enough to snatch a table in the bar area. We were greeted by a friendly server who took our drink order and seemed to be our new best friend :) (it wasn't crazy busy yet) Drinks are fairly priced and the bottles of beer are cold, not just kinda cold, but cold. Daily specials are offered. That was a mistake on my part because the $22 grouper I ordered was very small and had no flavor. They ruined a wonderful piece of fish. Stick with the burgers, they are pretty good and that's my usual order. Burgers and beer, right on! Back to the server. After our dinner was brought to the table the server came back one more time to remove our plates and then did a vanishing act on us. We even gave up our table to some folks waiting for a seat. I asked the hostess to find the server so he could give us a bill. Nothing. Then I notice the server greeting the folks at the table we gave up. Where the hell is my bill! If you like being in a super crowded environment where the tables are very close together and getting bumped around by the masses then this is the place for you. If not don't come at prime dining times. Also if you get a server who wants to be you're new BFF...run away and avoid the aggravation. I'm giving this place a break for a while. read more

We had family in from out of town and wanted a dining room experience--just not my dining room. This place has tall, wooded ceilings. Very comfortable place to sit, have a drink and eat a good meal. The food was satisfying. Decent portions, flavored well. Wouldn't say exceptional, but I'd go back. The chicken kabobs are fairly large, so only order two if you've got quite the appetite, especially if you're getting soup or rice with it. My only complaint was the noise level. It's really a 3.5, but I am going to round up because there is something intangible--some combination of the service, the aesthetic, and the menu--that makes this place really comfortable, especially in the cold-weather months. The fireplace doesn't hurt. I visited a couple of times a few years ago and remember a good impression, but for whatever reason it fell off my radar. Recently I returned for a lunch with colleagues. Service was as sweet as pie and sharp as a tack. I ordered the fried chicken dinner and ended up with a ton of food. First, an unexpectedly excellent bread plate for the table--thick-crusted country baguette-style loaf and a dark brown number with dried fruits and nuts. Then, soup--a bowl, not a cup--in which instance my choice was unfortunate, because the clam chowder was bland and gelatinous. The skin-on fries were solid, and the fried chicken was very good. The coating was slightly sweet and very crispy, which I liked because it held in the moistness of the meat. I give this chicken a B+. So, everything was great except for the soup, and I left stuffed. Put on your flannel shirt, your boots and red winter coat. You're coming to the north woods and getting some food. That's the Lodge--the dark wood paneling has absorbed years and years of woodsmen and woodsgirls enjoying their meals. At least that's the way it feels. We were stragglers, coming in near closing time on Saturday evening. The server was very cordial, making sure that we had what we wanted. The menu is retro (lots of beef)--it's a lodge. While other restaurants were shutting down, the parking lot here was still full (good sign). Navigation through the restaurant is tight, but we managed to find a cozy little table next to the fireplace. Atmosphere, check. Customer service and general friendliness - check. House mixed drinks are $7.50. We both decided on burgers, they were great. Onion rings were good, dill pickle was good, cole slaw was a bust. My asparagus were good, but in my opinion were thicker than desired, and could have used some olive oil and salt. The date bread to start was warm and yummy. Eyeballed the carrot cake on the dessert menu but ultimately passed at $8. We will keep this one because the experience was positive, atmosphere good and it is close and reasonably priced.
