Never again. Went on a Saturday night and waited over an hour for a table then bad service and a slow kitchen. We had 4 people on our party and we watched 5 groups move ahead of us as they had made reservations for 5 people only to tell the hostess that their fifth had just canceled. Those dishonest people are given preference because they had reservations. What a bunch of crap! Change your rules to allow reservations for 4 or 6 people. I have 2 choices: 1. Become a liar myself 2. Not give my hard earned money to a restaurant that rewards the liars I am going with #2. read more

When you drive by the Valley Lodge, you can't help but do a double take. It looks so much like log cabin, but it's off...Waukegan...in Glenview...right by a Ford dealership. Ummm... Okay moving on. I met a friend here for an early dinner. Excited to try a place new. Then, I looked at the menu. So sad for the vegetarian. I thought we were beyond salads, ordered with out the bacon bits, as the vegetarian option. Not here. I didn't have a lot to choose from so it didn't take long. Chopped salad, no bacon bits, no added meat. Mmmmmeeeehhhhhhh. That about wraps it up folks. Trust me, I am an EATER. I am not one of those who nibble. I love my food. Sadly, I couldn't enjoy much here. The place is quite dark inside, maybe they are setting the mood. The service was quite slow lots of "looks" to and around for our service. When we had service, they were friendly and kind. Potential. For the quality of food I was shocked the price was SO high. Grrrr. Parking lot available and even a little side lot for overflow. Like the flavor of their food and some of the choices. Don't like when you have to pick up carry out here. It's the worst...have to pass thru the bar to the "carry out" sign by the kitchen. If they're busy which is typical it's like pulling teeth to get their attention to get your order. Sometimes friendly, sometimes so so. Loud and I'm not comfortable picking up there. I drive by here all the time but never stopped in before even though its so close by. But today for the first time ever I had dinner with my father here. The burgers were so tasty and the onion rings were huge. And they sell sweet potatoe fries. Not the dinky one you get elsewhere. Thick yummy fries. And the staff was so nice. Came here for dinner, I am from out of town and visiting my dad in hospice. Took a high top to avoid the wait. Just wanted to relax a little and eat dinner. Got sat next to 4 people who were mostly standing and also hovering over our table (umm hello covid??) nothing worse than 50 year olds who are drunk and think they are funny. One of the guys was standing on the chair next to me.. wobbling. I'm pregnant and was worried for my safety. And then they started shoving eachother and bumped into me and knocked over stuff on our table. No workers came over, restaurant didn't care of this obnoxious and not covid friendly behavior. Not to mention the food is over priced for what it is and mediocre at best. Our waiter was mostly never to be seen so my boyfriend had to get refills from the bar. I play in orchestra with the manager so on our way back from Ryerson woods as a day trip, we thought we should stop in and pay tribute, I had heard great things about the place, which has been around a long time By good luck our server was also another person we knew! Maybe we got special treatment but everyone else seemed to be having a good time as well, it wasn't too crowded on a Sunday evening. The food portions were massive and of the comfort-food variety, all of it was excellent, I had the Greek style half chicken, very garlicy mashed potato, and green beans, all double portion. A prelude of saganaki cheese prepared the gullet for the deluge. Great way to close out the weekend, I wish I lived nearby to check it out more frequently read more

We ordered through Door Dash and got a skirt steak and southwest chopped salad. My husband ordered the skirt steak rare but it was cooked medium. He said it hardly had any flavor. He also ordered mashed potatoes but received green beans, which wasn't even an option on Door Dash! My salad was small, not chopped like it was supposed to be, and it hardly had any tomatoes or peppers in it. Definitely not worth the $16 I paid for it! The BBQ sauce tasted like it was bought from the store. We were disappointed with our food and the fact that instructions weren't followed. Have been driving by this place for 20+ years and have always wanted to try it. Finally got the opportunity and man do I wish I would have gotten here sooner! On a weekend night I suggest go early or late because if you try to get there between 6-7 while the wait is not terrible, the parking is. Once parked (after casing the place for 15 minutes) and inside and seated I was quite impressed with the service (every employee was friendly and seems like they have worked here for years). This seems like a popular local gathering place. Food was perfect- great salads, hamburgers, ribs (ribs: where have you been all my life?!), fries, chips, libations... Will definitely come back but will think about Carpooling or Ubering so I don't have to stress about parking. Can't wait for more ribs- definitely getting a full slab, they are that great. read more

Went here with 4 co-workers during lunch. None of us were impressed. First of, it felt like we were walking into happy hour at the old folks home. But whatever. Old folks do like good food and good deals you can decide if that's good or bad. The service was decent and the staff was nice. But the food and prices were very disappointing. Me and a co-worker got the sandwich and soup special with the clam chowder. It was actually worse that what we get at work. It had more onion than clam and neither of us could finish it. The beef melt was ok at best and mostly bland. For $10 this was a pretty bad deal of sub par soup and a very average sandwich. My co-worker had a burger which he said was "ok-ish". My other co-worker had a gyro place and he seemed to enjoy it. But he ponied up a good $12 for a gyro plate that should be around $8 for a reasonable lunch price. While the food is average, its nothing special. The waitstaff is slow and no one really seems to care. If you go on a weekend or a Big Sports nite, there will be the loud and obnoxious "regulars" spewing all kinds of inane nonsense so loud that you can't even remember why you came to this establishment in the first place. To top it off, the Owner, Nick, condones and encourages this behavior much to the chagrin of other patrons. We were referred to this place by one of the regulars, went several times and really tried to like it. So, we gave it one last shot. The restaurant was virutally empty so we sat at the bar had drinks and an appetizer. Now there were less than 6 people in the whole place! While we were chatting and enjoying our drinks, we discovered, rather abruptly, that last call had come and gone, our bill was placed in front of us and we were asked to "close it out"! Now, I realize that the North Shore implodes on itself at midnight, but this was 11pm on a Thursday! We had not had our water refilled in 15 minutes, no offer of last call and basically told to politely "get out". But here's the rub: one of the "regulars" sitting chatting with Nick, the owner, had a fresh full beer, an ice-cold water glass and NO ONE ASKING HIM TO LEAVE! We keep trying to like this place because we live so close, but it disappoints every time we go. The best thing I can say is they make a good stiff drink. I mean, how can you screw up a wedge salad? I'll tell you how. Bring it to the table room temperature when it should be ice cold, with ranch dressing instead of blue cheese on it. Yuck. Warm iceberg lettuce. I can do better at home. Went here for a work lunch last week. The place has a nice atmosphere and is kept up really well. The service was probably 4 out of 5 stars. Food came out pretty slowly despite it not being very busy and over half of the table ordering salads. The menu is pretty extensive with a wide variety of choices. There was also a specials menu which included corned beef and cabbage as St. Patrick's Day was the previous day. I decided to have the Valley Lodge burger with house chips. The food was just ok. The burger came topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese. I ordered it medium rare. It was pretty well done when it was served to me. The chips were very oily and half undercooked. Nothing was bad, but the place had been over-hyped to me. I will probably go back, but I will keep my expectations in check next time. read more

Was in town from Fort Worth, TX. as my dad was in hospice for more than two weeks. Found the Lodge on YELP and the reviews were positive. They were right. I ate there with family or ordered take out six times. The service is great, the menu offers many choices, and the food is delicious. Pretty nice bar and Lodge ambience too. Loved the medium rare burger and home made chips, the pork ribs fell off the bone with nice BBQ sauce, and the shrimp cocktail was as good as four star restaurants. Even their house dressing was unique and tasty. Pretty sure everything they offer is excellent. This is a diamond in the rough. I will go there next time I'm in Chicago. read more

My new pet peeve is when places lock down their wifi... It doesn't cost them anything to share. Knock off half a star for being stingy. Knock off a half star for being around this long yet making a dull burger. Hand form the burger people.... really, smashing it together removes all the texture a good burger should offer. Although , the cajun seasoning and blue cheese and the light weight pretzel bun were all good... that's why I only knocked off half a star. Our party had a chopped salad... good size, tasty, enjoyed by 2 of our party of 3. Our guest ordered the corned beef and cabbage and he was very happy. The best part of this place is the ambiance. If it had a little sound absorption going on it would be perfect but it's old and quaint and a little rustic and that's pretty nice. This is as 'neighborhood' as it can get in the burbs..Tons of regulars, all shapes and sizes gathering at various times of the day. I always enjoying sitting at the bar and striking up conversations with the bar flies, sometimes arguments, but always walking away with a great story and most of the times a new acquaintance. The place is spotless, wait staff is excellent.. owner is typically there listening to the tune of the greek piano..3-4 TV's with games on, but the volume is not.. The pours are honest, food is great, portions are generous. Medium size joint..Seating is a bit tight, so wait time can be an issue for larger parties, weekends more so.. although this place is always busy.. make reservations..great food, great people = good business! read more

My thoughts: Food - decent... had a burger, it was cooked as ordered, about a 1/2 lb for $10 with an order of fries and a "solo cup" of nondescript cole claw. Service - good, prompt. Kept refilling my soda which was appreciated. It took an ordinary amount of time for my burger to come out, so that was fine. Ambiance - better than expected... was anticipating more of a "neighborhood place" inside, but it was casual/classy. Bike broke down right next door from here. I have lived in or fairly close to Glenview for most of my life and have passed this by a bunch but never stopped in. Glad we decided to grab a bit here. The food was good and very filling. Prices are slightly above average but not horrible. I paid 13.10 for the lodge burger which came with fries and a little bit of coleslaw. The also serve you some fairly decent bread right when you sit down. Much of the menu sounds delicious so i may be back to try something else. I'm definitely a fan and I go here regularly for dinner with friends. The place has a nice homey feel with a fireplace. It is often crowded at popular times like Friday nights, which can mean long wait times (30-40 minutes or more). It would be best to call in advance and make a reservation if you're coming at one of those times. Despite having a full house, there always seems to be enough parking, which is another plus. The food is good and there is plenty of it. I usually take half my meal home for later. Their dark home baked bread is served warm, and it is delicious! Ribs are one of their specialties, and although I'm not particularly fond of them, my friends insist that the ribs at the Lodge are the best anywhere. I like their salads, especially the Greek salad, and their chicken and fish. Sandwiches come with cole slaw and fries. I recommend the sweet potato fries. For dessert, if you have room you should try their carrot cake. It is very good and the serving size is enormous! I usually share mine with a friend. The bar has a nice selection of craft and dark beers. Service is friendly and attentive, although you should be prepared for some delays at busy times. In my opinion the prices are quite modest. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. Everyone I brought here from out of town has liked this place and will often ask to come back the next time they are visiting the area. read more

I came here for the first time during the lunch hour. The set up is pretty cute- kind of split level and open. There was a fireplace with a fire going which makes for a nice touch considering it's a 'lodge'. Our server was very friendly and presented us with warm bread- my weakness at any restaurant. I ordered the beef tenderloin on the pretzel buns with homemade potato chips. Can't resist saying Yum! out loud as I remember how delicious it was. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've been coming to this little piece of Americana for about 15 years now. And have become great friends with many patrons, servers and even the owners. I realize that at this point many will consider my review bias, but read on, please! As I've read the few mediocre reviews on this place I see a theme! I see a lot of posts that say that they feel "unwelcome", or even "in a club they don't belong to". Well guess what! Every single person that packs this place every single night came in here for the first time once too! When it's packed , they still make time to say hello. They know most people by name. Came here with my dad for a late lunch, and was so surprised and delighted at the wide selection and huge portions. This place is really a hidden gem. The interior is super comfortable and has a vintage look to it(which is appropriate considering it's one of the earliest restaurants still operating in Glenview. We ordered the fried green beans and the spanakopita, which were way bigger than we anticipated, and super delicious. My crispy shrimp wrap was AMAZING. I wish I could have another one right now. There were plenty of shrimp, the perfect ratio to the lettuce and sauce. The sauce was a bit spicy, which I usually don't like, but the flavor was balanced so well that it tasted fantastic. The service was extraordinary, and the food came out super quickly. The fries it came with were great, and we had two completely full leftover boxes that we brought home with us. When a restaurant has Gyros appetizers as well as an entree item on their menu reads "Homemade" and it is like lunch meat, that should be the first indication. My wife and the other couple liked the Soganaki. The rest of the meal was Meidocer. My Shrimp was good (large), good breading. The Perch was good. The service was also mediocer. I guess the table near ours must have been regulars. Our waitress kept saying "I'll be back" when we were asking for a bill. Finally when we got up and looked like we were leaving, she readily came. She did not ask if we wanted more drinks or water throughout the meal. Not Bad, small seating area A lot of tables close to one another. Mediocer. Stella on tap was a plus. read more
