I was in town for work, ended up getting a free day and needed a hair cut. Looked up a couple of places in Yelp and Van Michael was the only one open on Sunday. Turned out to be very lucky! Wonderful hair cut! I'm picky about my hair and always concerned with getting a bad cut, but as soon as I stepped into the salon my concerns disappeared! I got my hair cut by Clay in the New Talents section which concerned me at first but that was quickly proven silly! Clay was great! Started with a quick neck and shoulder massage and finished with a warm towel, couldn't have been better! O yeah and did I mention the hair cut was GREAT! I hope I need a hair cut in Atlanta again! I really like this place. People are decent, do their job well and are efficient. I know "efficient" isn't the sexy word people want to associate with a hair salon but when time, quality and respect are valuable to you in all aspects of life - you can relate to the efficiency that goes along with a beautiful hair highlight and style. I understand that sometimes appointments run overtime and there is really nothing you can do about it, but if they are going to insist that you respect their time by arriving within the fifteen minute window (as they should), they should also be respectful of your time if an appointment runs ridiculously over time. I had only had the allotted 45 minutes available for a cut, and when I realized there was no way I was getting out of there in less than 1.5 hours, I had to leave. The only thing I was asked was whether or not I wanted to reschedule. Not a discount next time, not an inexpensive complimentary service? Nothing? Really? Makes it seem as if they think they are doing you a favor by letting you come to their salon. There are hundreds of salons in Atlanta. Glad they don't care where I get my hair cut, Bc I won't ever go there again. Two stars because the front desk guy was nice. I recently stated going to Issac at Van Michael in June, which I fly from Seattle, Wa JUST to make sure my hair color is PERFECT! And let me tell you, it is SO WORTH THE FLIGHT! Be forewarned: do NOT go to this salon if you are seeking any kind of "color correction". They will make you sign a waiver that basically lets them off the hook if they do any damage to your hair or if they screw up the color (which is what happened in my case). After returning home from my visit, I was very unhappy with two toned, greenish tint to my hair (I showed my stylist a picture of honey blonde, that is NOT what I got). I called the next day to see if they could fix it at no additional cost and they told me of couse and scheduled my next appointment right away. That should have been the end of the story....but it's not. Once I arrived they told me that my hair color was what the stylist was going for (not even a blind person would agree that it was an acceptable color for hair) and that since I signed this waiver, that they were not responsible for fixing for free. I pulled out the picture I brought in the night before and told them this was the hair color I asked for and compared it to the icky color that was on my head. They assured me that the stylist could not have done anything differently to make it a better color. After 45 minutes of arguing with 2 managers and 2 hair stylists (and creating quite the scene) I left with tears in my eyes, no refund, and ugly hair. Some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced at a hair salon. Just to let you know, I visited another salon in the area (Barron's London Salon) and in one visit and in about 1 1/2 hours less time, they got my hair color to the EXACT color that I wanted it without even flinching. The people at this salon could not understand why the people at Van Michael let me leave with my hair looking so terrible before and how they even got it to that color in the first place. The inexperienced "New Talent" hair stylists at Van Michael need about 5 more years of work before I let them touch my head or anyone else i know. read more

When I moved to Atlanta I had trouble finding a salon. I visited a couple places in Midtown and was miserable with the experiences. Then I found Van Michael and I haven't even thought about going anywhere else in the last 6 years. This place is heaven and the stylist and colourist I have now are the most talented I've ever had the pleasure to visit. They're so good I don't want to tell people who I go to because it's already hard to book appointments they're so popular- but they're both such great people that I have to brag about them whenever I'm asked. Ashley might actually be a wizard. The things she can do with colour are unreal and I trust her implicitly. I can say things like 'I dunno, I'd like to do something different but not too different, maybe a little darker or something' and she will know exactly what that means and what I need (even when I don't really know what I want). That may not mean a lot to everyone, but anyone who colours their hair regularly understands how important it is to have a colourist that understands what your inspiration is and how to turn that into a color that suits you. And Ashley never delivers anything less than perfection. Of course, perfection costs a little more, but $95 for my single process feels like I'm getting one over on them given the results. If she doubled her prices tomorrow I would still pay them. I might not be able to pay the cable bill but I would still get my colour done. My cut is just as important as the color, and when my regular stylist moved across the country I was pretty bummed. But as much as I miss her I am so glad that I now have Andrew in my life because I don't know how anyone else ever cut my hair. I have lost track of the number of strangers who have stopped me to compliment my bangs. I know what you're thinking, how hard can it be to cut bangs? As someone who has had some really crappy cuts, I can tell you that it's pretty damn hard. The best part is that he's still in New Talents, so you have time to get on his schedule regularly before he moves across the salon and his prices go up. These days visiting New Talents will set you back only $35 to $45 depending on who you see. read more

Eve is the absolute BEST i have platinum blonde hair and you BLONDES out there probably have been thru the same BS looking for a stylist who actually knows what they're doing i saw Juan Carlos twice the first time it looked great and the second it was a disaster my dad was stunned Juan let me walk out of the salon like that...It got worse over night my hair was purple grey and looked dull and extremely fried,yellowish & orange roots. Sam the manager who is very nice and very accommodating got me in the next day...She said EVE will be doing your hair i have never met her so i was a little nervous. I have been a customer for just over a year and have nothing but good things to say. Eve is so talented at color and her shadow Jade is so engaging that I love going to get my hair done. I always had problems with my scalp after bleach at my old salon, and they take great care with the products they use. The front desk is great at customer care and no one pushes products on you, which is refreshing. The training that each of the stylists and colorists receive is top notch. ..... So many of you yelpers recommended a girl that works there for my platinum blond hair. I made the appointment, show up, am greeted by rude receptionists, and then asked by the customer beside of me if my bag was real! hahaha AWESOME. I was trying not to walk out the door with my favorite fingers in the air in order to get to this awesome Ashley that I had heard so much about. Can you guess what happens next?? They sit me down and introduce me to a male who I thought was the assistant because I made an appointment with a female.. DUH. Nope .. they put me with the wrong person and my girl was already working on someone and I was stuck with Ron Rock. I smiled politely and prayed he would be just as good. HE WAS!! I walked out of there so thrilled with my hair that he made beautiful, shiny, and no yellow anywhere. WOOHOOOO! I tipped him 45 percent out of happiness. Good thing I didn't write the review that day .... My next appointment Ron just didn't try as hard. There was a little yellow in my hair and he wasn't as friendly. I shrugged it off and believed that he must be having a bad day and next time it will be like the first. I tipped him the same to keep my hopes that ..*he is the one *alive. Oh boy is the third time a chaaaarm ....... Not only did Ron feel feisty enough to tell me what stylists he thought were fat and ugly, but somehow talked me in to doing highlights this time. I wanted to believe that he had my best interest at heart but I walked out completely heart broken with brassy sunshine yellow toned darker hair. The beautiful white hair that I had worked on for years was destroyed. Gone like that. For two days I tried to cope and find ways to love it. I hated it. My husband hated it. $300 later and a $100 tip .. I just knew he would fix it for me. I call ... OH are you ready for the killer!!!????? He actually says NO he will not fix it for free, he will put in more low lights for a high price and that I need to say goodbye to platinum blond "honey". He called me honey. Van Michael was the first place I tried after my recent move to Atlanta. I had heard about their reputation, and being someone with high hair expectations, I figured they were a safe bet. Without a doubt, the haircut was top notch. Better than great. I even went back for a second round, which was just as great as the first. Unfortunately, I didn't really connect with my stylist, and I found the melee when entering and moving through the salon a bit off-putting. There were a million people milling around, and the staff all seemed to be making a thorough assessment of me before speaking. No one I met was overly personable. If your only concern is getting fabulous hair, I say, "Hey, go for it," but there are lots of places in town that offer that. For me, that's not enough. I have to say I am a bit surprised at all of the glowing reviews. Yes, it is a beautiful salon and the people are very nice and it's run in a very high-end way but the haircut I got was one of the worst I have ever received. I looked positively frumpy. I went in for a layered bob. I have fine hair but I have a lot of it, so it needs to be shaped. For some reason she decided to layer my hair from underneath which makes no sense except that it thins the ends which just makes it look kind of weird and thin. So despite the nice decor, expensive products and very very nice customer service I have to say this is a terrible salon because my purpose in going to salon is to walk out looking great. I did not. I've tried to give this place a chance on multiple occasions but have ended up so many times with someone who's just not that great. I used to go to the Van Michael in Miami and everyone there was amazing. I've been to maybe 4 different people to keep giving this place a chance(outside of New Talent) and none of them layer properly! I feel like their cuts are Southern style lol. so yeah, won't be going here anymore!! I have been a customer at Van Michael Salon for eight years and have repeatedly referred friends and family. During this time, I had experienced through trial and error three great stylists who left the salon due to notorious management issues. As a response, the salon offered me a voucher for free haircuts, but after my most recent visit I don't plant to return. After specifically asking for a stylist who had experience with curls, I was sent to Catherine who has stick straight hair. When I asked her to follow the previous cut (a long v-cut with some layers) I ended up with a u-shaped, shaggy lob. For any girls with curly hair, you know how unflattering and outdated this looks. My hair was also needlessly damaged by running over the same strands six times with a flat iron... I could feel the heat from my hair through three layers of clothing. I was rushed out and told to come back later if I wanted it fixed because "she didn't know what I wanted" and "it was our very first session" although I constantly went out of my way to describe my desired cut. I can't imagine how someone who damaged and cut my hair incorrectly in the first place could fix it? I understand that bad haircuts and poor service are sometimes inevitable before finding a stylist you can mesh with. What frustrates me is that Van Michael's does have great talent but can't hold onto it. It's also upsetting that, as a loyal customer for the longest time, my haircuts have been turned into an in-and-out session focused more on efficiency than quality. If you value the brand name of your salon, then Van Michael's is for you. If you want a quality haircut and good service, look elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend booked a haircut with the new talents. When he returned home I wasn't expecting much because you know...new talent, right? Well this was the BEST haircut he has ever gotten in the 5+ years we've been together. His hair looks incredible styled, but better than that it looks incredible whether he's just woken up or jumped out of the water. Ironically, this haircut was super important because we had a wedding/honeymoon (pictures galore). He looked very handsome and put together in all of the photos. I'm a total fan of this salon especially its right next to Whole Foods. I would stop by Whole Foods and grab a bite to eat while getting my color done. I have enjoyed every service I received from the top hairstylists to new talents, they all do such great work. They would offer you complimentary drinks, hand massage and scalp and shoulder massage. I have been going to Van Michaels since the last several years and usually schedule an appointment with whoever is available in the new talent section. Never had any complaint or issue - always experienced a great hair treatment (cut or color) until this last time. I wish I could go back in time and undo scheduling an appointment with Lucy. I requested for a two inch trim and she took the liberty of taking off more than 4 inches off my hair length. I don't know what part of layers she didn't understand and gave me a bob cut style. Almost 7! years later and I am still 100% loyal to Ashley as my phenomenal colorist. She is fun, engaging, thoughtful and exceptionally talented at helping clients discern just the right hue for you. I generally just do a single process color treatment and I am in and out of the salon in 60-75 minutes and that is with a full blow out of my long and thick wavy locks. Both the salon and New Talents have quality stylists. I've had a few different stylists when I've needed to schedule an appt. immediately and have been impressed by all. When I'm not being last minute, I prefer to see Shannon Loveless - who is by far the best stylist I've had at any salon. I have ridiculously thick hair that laughs in the face of puny scissors and often requires me to schedule longer appointments for even a trim. She's done an amazing job of transforming my nightmare hair into something gorgeous. read more

I've been going here for 2 years now, ever since I asked a friend for her stylist. I use Stephanie for cutting my hair and Ashley for color. Both are amazing and so fantastic at their jobs. The full experience here is all about pampering. From a neck and head massage from the beginning, the massage chairs while you get your hair washed, and a hand massage while getting your hair cut or waiting for your color to set. This place may seem priced high, but it is seriously worth it! Also, they offer late hours on Thursday which is perfect for me. read more

The girls they have staffing the front desk seemed very immature, and a bit incompetent when I inquired on other services and products. This is hard to write because I saw two different people. I went to Khia for my color and she was able to give me exactly what I wanted the very first time. I would definitely go back to her. If I were just rating color, I'd give a MUCH higher rating. Unfortunately, I came back a few days later for a cut with Paul (one of the new talents) and while he was SO nice and chatty, he gave me what was probably the worst cut I've ever had. I had been growing my hair out and needed it freshened up for my engagement pictures. I don't know if he got caught up talking and wasn't paying attention, but my hair was totally different lengths on either side of my face and there were pieces that just looked like when a small child takes scissors to their hair. He was finishing up and I asked if he could try to even it out a bit and he got really quiet for the first time the whole night. I sort of regretted asking him to touch it up because I felt like he just kept snipping away at that point, with no real plan or technique. I ended up with most of my hair long and cut plainly, straight across (even though I asked for a style to give it a little body/movement) and the awkward, not-really bangs that I definitely didn't ask for.
