This is my first yelp review, and I'm reviewing because I have to let everyone know how great this place is. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I sat down the entire staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming. Christy was my stylist today, and before she even did anything she was on her iPad helping me find the perfect look. She walked me through different ways I could wear the same haircut, and when she made certain I was completely comfortable with the look, she led me to get shampooed and treated me to a 5 minute head massage. Feeling completely relaxed at this point, she led me back to begin cutting. The haircut was admittedly long (she admits she is a perfectionist) but I didn't even notice the time going by as we were in conversation the whole time. When she finished I almost didn't even recognize myself as we completely changed my look, which I now love. The atmosphere of the salon is upscale and trendy, with edm music playing in the background. 5/5 stars will definitely return. read more

I am very picky about my haircuts. So much so that I never had a regular hairdresser that I saw to keep a hairstyle. Until I met Tami. I have been seeing Tami here since May of this year. I started seeing her when my hair was rather long and thick and didn't really have a "style". I decided I wanted bangs- for the first time in my life!- so I was a bit nervous. I also wanted her to thin out my hair a bit and add layers to give it some style. She was AMAZING! She really exceeded my expectations and the end result was even better than I expected. I love Tami now and trust her to do whatever she wants when I go in for my trims. And even though I know everyone at Van Michael is qualified, I wont even let anyone else trim by bangs! Lol. I would have given five stars because of her however, she moved to this location from the Buckhead location and when I parked there the first visit, I got a $35 parking ticket because I didnt know you had to pay on the street. :( They did let me know after the fact that if you come here, you can park on the side / neighborhood streets to avoid those bummer tickets when you come out with your beautiful hair :) read more

This was my first time coming to Van Michael to get a haircut, after recently leaving Helmet after a couple below-average haircuts. I was able to call at 11am and get an appointment for 1pm which was ideal. Received a polite welcome and tour of the salon when I arrived, and the receptionist offered a number of beverages and showed me to the waiting area. Charlotte came out early for my appointment, and everything was great. She listened to what I was looking for, offered some good advice, and gave a really great haircut. Well worth the money. I have had more bad experiences with hair salons than I could possibly count. I've had my ear cut, highlights left on too long, rude/snooty stylists, etc. I've tried several in the Atlanta/Virginia Highlands area, and never left happy. However... Van Michael Salon was a wonderful experience. Everyone was nice and an expert with hair. I especially enjoyed the neck and arm massage. I saw Denise for color, and Courtney for a cut. While it was a bit pricey ($250ish for both), it was completely worth it! It was by far the best hair cut and color I've ever had. The highlight color looks AMAZING, and the layered cut was perfect!! Very disappointed and upset this time. I've been going to Van Michael for years and my highlighter colorist usually listens to my requests. This time it was a disaster. My hair is ruined- it's all frizzy and dry and much lighter than I asked for. In fact, at the beginning of the appointment I told her it was too light last time. She didn't listen to me and did the exact same thing as the last time even though that was much lighter than before over the years. I told her over and over, I don't want it as light. Instead, she put more color in than ever before, so angry. And it cost $ 150, for a partial, plus a tip to ruin my hair. I should at least get my money back. read more

Love this place! I have long hair so when I get a hair cut I want to get a nice one because it might be a while till I get it done again. Every hair cut here has been great! Usually I see Jerry (she is fantastic!!!) but I have been to Chanda before also (also fantastic!!!). They do such an amazing job!!! My girlfriend has been going to Rob, the Salon Director at Van Michaels [VA Highlands] for a while and has been raving about him. One day I gave into her plea for me to try it...and haven't looked back! After going to an wonderful independent person for over a year, I step into the place that has became a haven for those and their locks. Upon entering entering the door, the staff here successfully portray themselves- stylish, hip, but very hospitable- offering a drink [tea, coke, coffee] as soon as they get the chance to. My hair was getting really long and boring, but Rob gave me a total make over by giving me a haircut that fit my face and frame. I joke with people when I say this, but it's true- it's like he makes love to my hair every time! Oh- his assistants have been very nice and give you both hand and neck massages. I have jet black hair so on a whim last fall wanted to lighten my hair; I should have listened to his advice not to but they did such a great job! What is so great is that he gives honest advice! Prices are a little bit more steep than the average haircut but we work hard, so why not treat ourselves right? Please be sure to make an appointment though. read more

I am the pickiest about haircuts. I never go to a salon for more than one or two haircuts because they always seem to mess up or not understand what I mean when I say "TRIM". I have long fine hair and I am more than particular about how my bangs look. After a good haircut at another Highlands salon but a bad experience (where I was basically shoved out the door when her next client arrived/not even shampooed) I was a little nervous to go to ANOTHER new salon. Well, yesterday I saw Mekaylah at Van Michael. I told her about my experience and she went out of her way to make me comfortable there and did a great job. First, they massage your head with oil. That was a first for me. After the shampoo and cut, she offered to style it however I liked (curl, straighten, etc.) which is also new to me, considering the last cut basically blow-dried and sent me out. Mekaylah charges $55 which I think is really reasonable for how great of a job she did. She told me exactly how she was going to cut my hair and asked permission before doing anything drastic since I explained what a hair-cut-phobic I am. I really appreciated all that she did, and I will definitely be going back to her next time. read more

Nilan is the best! I've been going to see her since she worked at the Van Michael in Buckhead and I followed her to the Highland salon because she always cuts my hair perfectly! I have baby fine hair and any little miscut really shows - she takes extra time to make sure I get a very precise haircut and I leave feeling like a million bucks! I've been going to Nilan since she was at New Talents in Buckhead with a slight hiatus when she moved to the Highlands location. When I started a new job in Midtown, one thing I was most happy about was that I could start going to see her again. She really cares about the health of my hair and takes the time to discuss what I want from my cut and ultimately what I want from my hairstyle in the future. She's great at progressing your cut to where you want to be. She gives great tips and instructions on how to care for your hair in-between cuts. read more

I have had long hair for 31 years and decided to go short this week. SEAN BRUNO cut my hair and I absolutely LOVE it. I brought pics of what I wanted and he cut my hair exactly, to a T, like the photo. He took his time and really made it perfect. I am so glad I cut my hair, and now I've decided no one will touch my hair but him. I've had too many blah haircuts from other hairdressers. His was very artistic and absolutely perfect. I had some media/press events that week and I was confident and not at all worried about my hair. I used to stress over it all the time. He also showed me how to easily style my hair. Edited review 4 stars: I'm a regular here for hair cuts and have always had a great experience. Until I decided to go in for hair coloring with a colorist I haven't worked with before. After finishing the job, she mentioned that the color wasn't noticeable enough, and she offered to re-do it on the spot. Indeed with the lighting I really couldn't see a difference at all, so I really appreciated her offer to fix it that same evening. An hour and a half later, the color was much lighter than I initially wanted. Some pieces look great, while others are incredibly too heavy and uneven. Plus I had to pay for an extra 1.5 hours of parking at the meter. I'm left wanting to go to a drug store tomorrow to dye it back to a solid color. With all that said, I have to take away a star from this rating and I can't recommend anyone come here for a color. Previous review at 5 stars: I had long hair for a very long time, and first came to Van Michael to go for a super short look. Mekaylah was great about understanding exactly what kind of cut I was looking for, even if my description of it was pretty vague. I have to say, I've always heard Van Michaels' was snooty and overrated. But after trying multiple salons in the area, I decided to give it a go. I first went for a haircut and saw Mekaylah (Not sure if I spelled that right). She was FANTASTIC. I had gotten a cut at another salon before and the guy somewhat ruined my cut. Mekaylah fixed it right up and I loved it! The next time I wanted some color and Mekaylah had recommended Cassidy. I LOVED her. She gave me a consultation that showed me she knew exactly what I was looking for. Messy highlights that had little upkeep and some ombre to it. She really knows what she's doing! It's been a month since I saw both of them last and I still wake up every morning and love my hair. This is my new salon! read more

I had an appointment at Van Michael Virginia Highlands on the Saturday before my wedding weekend, which had been booked for months. I happened to call the salon to confirm the Friday before my appointment and they told me my stylist actually didn't work at the salon anymore. I received NO call from anyone at Van Michael letting me know that not only my stylist didn't work there anymore, but also that my appointment was cancelled. I am extremely disappointed in the salon and how they handled the situation. I had been going to the salon for the past 7 years with regular appointments and was a great customer. I had been in a rut of the same long layered haircut for years... Nilan convinced me to get bangs and that totally transformed my look for the better. I got so many compliments from friends and acquaintances that I'll never go back!! She and I have the same long shaped face and she was keen enough to recognize that bangs would suit me. I moved away to Colorado for 12 years and when I moved back home the first place I took my hair was Van Michael's in Virginia Highlands! David is no longer there but I consistenly get fabulous cut and color and have always been made welcome, it is a bit expensive but really - my hair is worth it! read more

I love almost everything about this place. I've moved from California to Texas and now to Atlanta and have had great luck with Aveda salons. The products are outstanding, if pricey, and the stylists are very well-trained. I like that you can opt for a stylist with less experience whose fee is lower. The service at Van Michael is always courteous and friendly and my stylist Jolie does an awesome bob. I love that they start with a head massage! I've had my brows waxed a few times by different stylists and I'm always pleased with the result. The reasons I didn't give five stars are first, this place is tiny and cramped, which makes me feel a wee bit claustrophobic. The second reason is that on my last visit someone had a screaming, wailing toddler with them. IMHO, this is not an appropriate place for children and I wish they would ask people to leave the kiddos at home! The third reason is parking. You either have to park in a lot two blocks away or pay for street parking, if you can get it. But none of these things will keep me away, they are just minor inconveniences. read more

Today I realized why I have been seeing Mark Riley for over 14 years. He is the only man in my life that understands me and my hair! I have to confess that I cheated on Mark with someone in Nashville and I regret ever doing so. I came in today so that Mark could fix my botched up haircut. He new exactly what to do. He worked his magic and in no time I was back to feeling beautiful! Mark is very laid back and listens to what you want. He takes into account your face shape, hair type, your hair vision, and gives you the cut of a lifetime each time. Yes, it is a bit pricey but my hair is worth it and paying for someone who knows what they are doing is priceless. I recently moved to Atlanta, and after hearing so many glowing reviews about Van Michael, I thought I couldn't go wrong. Unfortunately, it was all wrong. The colorist (Kellie) was extremely nice and was trying, but just didn't get what I meant when I said "natural". I have to commend her for trying to fix the color and again, really listening, but even after she fixed it, it still isn't right. While not a hair disaster, my color is certainly not worth the high price Van Michael charges. It looks chunky, overprocessed, and unnatural. I would never go back to her to do my hair. The biggest offense, however, was my blowout by Doug. I kept thinking he was going to finish somehow, but he sent me out looking like a homeless person. When I left, my hair looked worse than when I walked in. In fact, it looked worse than when I have 5 minutes to dry my hair so I turn my head upside-down and blast my hair on high. I got home and my roommate immediately said "I thought you were going to get your hair done?" So all in all, I would stay far far away unless you know exactly who you want to do your hair and can trust that person. Otherwise, save your money. read more

Nilan is unbelievable. I hesitate to write this review because I don't want the world to know how great Nilan really is. However, I can't keep a good thing to myself. Nilan has transformed my hair. I went in based on a recommendation I had received for her. Within 8 months, we had transformed my nest into a healthy, shiny head of hair. Her knowledge of Aveda products and eye for style makes her a perfect 10 in my book. She truly cares about her clients, even outside of making you look beautiful. I would recommend Nilan to anyone looking for a great cut, but more-so for the entire experience she brings. Came in after having an awful experience at another local salon. They completely fixed my hair and then some!

I was very disappointed.The stylist was nice enough but didn't listen to what I wanted. I asked for a trim ONLY, but they went ahead cut off 3 inches. Now my hair is way too short. The stylist seemed to be on autopilot and just gave me one of the styles they've been cutting for the last decade, as the cut I got was very dated, lopsided and just not well executed. And it looks awful. I was hoping for something simple, modern and fresh but got an old, dated train wreck of a haircut instead. Will be growing this one out for a while. :( read more

Moldy towels! If you ever smell anything at all nasty about a towel in a hair place (probably anywhere else) run screaming! You don't need that cut today that bad! This place gave me some kind of disease on my neck, boils which took forever to figure what was going on and how to get rid of it.
