Harry and guys over at Van Nuys Autoworks are top notch. I have a car that I enjoy taking to the race track. A week prior to a track day I had the car serviced at the dealership so that all was in order for the beating it was going to take on the track. As I started to get ready to leave for the track, I noticed a few drops of oil on my drive way. Not good...my car has a known issue that the oil filter will backoff if not torqued properly. I called a few places close to me, as I needed to lift the car to have the filter torqued down. This was on a Friday afternoon. After a few shops said they couldn't do it I found Van Nuys Autoworks...Harry told me to be at the shop in about an hour. Upon arrival, he came out, greeted me, lifted the car and handled the filter issue (it was very loose). His crew even checked a few other loose ends as they understood I was headed to the track and are car enthusiasts themselves. Beware of these Scammers, first of all I have a lot of experience working on vehicles, i brought in my vehicle for timing belt kit to be installed, waterpump and tensioner and idler pulleys included, i just needed labor done because of the difficult and stubborn crankshaft bolt, I know my parts i inspect them when they arrive, making sure its the right ones and for any defects that may be present, and i know what they look like after a few hundred miles....i was planning to do my valve adjustment and discovered, they have NOT replaced the timing belt that i expected then to use, what else did they not replace, the water pump? Idler pulleys? Coolant? All of which were supplied by me, and claimed that "they do not do that in their shop!!!" Basically I gave them $300 in parts and $400 to keep them..... read more

I came in with my 2004 Acura MDX with a laundry list of things I thought was wrong since I haven't had it serviced in a year and a half because of Covid. I am SHOCKED this team doesn't have more reviews! They deserve it! Not only do we take our fleet vehicles here but I took a personal vehicle for repairs too! Shop is tucked in but look for the building street side with the address and pull into the open gate; there a couple of shop in the lot. Appears they take all common forms of payment. Common lobby area for a shop. Multiple bays and mechanics. 03' Toyota Tundra that has had A LOT of upgrades but of course along the way original parts have reached their max. A bunch of issues such as leaking rack and pinion, ABS wiring & break master cylinder etc, AC, control arms, bushing, ball joint etc etc, just a bunch. After working to fit my drop off schedule the team evaluated and provided feedback with a reasonable cost as I was being given just far out estimates and time frames; I get all shops/mechanics are different. They respected that I was worried on timing as a big trip for vacation was upcoming and it was my preference to have the Tundra ready in time for trailer towing and it was! I'm so impressed with how kind Chris & Harry are...even though I keep mixing their voices up hahaha! I am so appreciative they help not just my crew's fleet vehicles but mine too. I came in on Tuesday because my engine feels like it's been dragging when I accelerate and doesn't have as much power as usual. The guys who work here are so humble and helpful - def seem like genuinely honest mechanics. They spent about an hour trying to diagnose what is wrong with my car because none of the sensors are activating and everything else seems fine. They could have lied and told me to change the spark plugs or catalytic converter and I might have been like, "I have no idea what you're talking about but sure let's do it!" However, Aram and his brother both agreed that I should wait a bit. They said my transmission is fine, the exhaust is in good condition.... everything seems cool except I can't get my car up to 90 mph in 5 seconds like I'd prefer. C'est la vie, I guess. Thank god I probably won't get a speeding ticket any time soon. If something ever goes wrong with my car, I will bring it back here for sure. I feel like I can trust these guys. I spent 95% of my day in tears after missing work because of car trouble. Every shop I called was either too expensive or couldn't offer immediate help, which I needed. Eventually, I bought a new battery from autozone after being told they'd help me replace the old one for free. Jokes on me. Apparently that is not true for my style of Cadillac. I was told it would be too difficult. A few more tears and a few more phone calls later I called Van Nuys Autoworks and spoke with a kind gentleman named Harry. It was about 12 minutes until they closed but he insisted I come by then and not wait until morning. I was in and out of the shop in less than 20 minutes and paid literally 1/4 of the price that every single other shop I called quoted me. Harry and his team are absolute angels. I don't know much about cars and I don't have family or anyone here who does either. I was feeling so hopeless and they saved my day. They took great care of my 1985 jeep. I was happy with the work, until I noticed there were some chemical burns on the inside of my hood. Chris the owner said he would take care of it and the whole engine well and inside of the hood looks better than it did before. Like new. Heaven Sent. Thank God I found this place. Honest Mechanic!!! I moved here from Florida about 2 years ago and always had the privilege of running things by my Dad and brothers with car issues because they're car guys and most mechanics flat out lie - especially when you're a female..ugh, the stories I could tell you! Well I found this place when I briefly lived in the Valley while looking for a place to get my oil changed on my then 2003 Ford Explorer. The guys were super friendly and got me in and out right away. Went back for several oil changes afterwards and never had an issues. They would always tell me what things I needed to keep an eye out on and I got a few minor repairs here and there - just like my Dad. After nearly a year, my A/C went out (after having the air compressor replaced less than a year ago) so I was upset. God has jokes because it went out on the hottest day in Cali in 2015...smh. Took it in and they took everything apart, checked out all my stuff under the hood and diagnosed it as the compressor being bad. If I were still in Florida I could have gotten it replaced for free but couldn't since I was in Cali. I decided against it and they didn't charge me anything for checking it all out - forever grateful for that. Since I had an old truck, I actually decided to go out and buy a new Ford Edge and even though I don't live in the Valley anymore, I still always come here for my oil changes (as I did again today) and will see these guys first for any repairs I may need in the future. RUDE AS FUCK... AND LOW KEY RACIST! I came here earlier today because the saga continues with my car... (face palm). My mechanic recommended this place with a reference to see a man named Chris for my state inspection and repair. Ok. I pull in... there are cars parked both diagonally AND vertically, making it VERY hard to know which way is right... so I just pull up behind the cars that are facing my same direction. This place is 3 garages in one.. but there is only 1 state inspection side (smog, brake and light, and other things). A man comes out from another garage and makes a face at me, gesturing me to move up with a sarcastic wave and gesture. Ok. Stevie Wonder could fucking see that there are cars EVERYWHERE... with no rhyme or reason. Making a shitty face and gesturing me like I'm stupid is just going to make me leave... but since I'm here to see someone highly recommended, I keep it moving. Just then, a dodge charger comes roaring up behind me and quickly swerved around (he had PLENTY of room, he was just showing off) then pulls up bedside me to give me a dirty look. Ok... what the fuck? I wasn't blocking the driveway, and you had plenty of room... maybe you wanted to park where I was? If so, I'm obviously a customer so what's your problem? I don't know what it is with most mechanics, but when they see a female customer alone, they tend to act sooo extra macho and assholish. I almost left, but I went into the office. Another black customer was coming in as I did, and he immediatly took a seat. I went and stood at the desk. The man who just came up beside me and gave me the stink face in the dodge charger walks in, and starts talking to the gentleman who just sat down. He tells him he's going to get him a rental car, and that his car is going to take more time.... blah blah. Meanwhile, I'm just standing there. He NEVER acknowledges me, then when he's done with the man, proceeds to walk away. The man says "Hey, I think she's waiting for you...." then he looks at me and says "Oh. I thought you were together." With this smirk and condescending tone. Umm... what the fuck? What would make you "think" that? Because we're both black? First of all... you're lying. You just saw me outside and gave me a dirty look while I WAS IN MY CAR! It's obviously NOT the car that this man you've been dealing with to the point that you know he needs a rental car is driving, and you've certainly never seen me before, so what would make you think we're "together"? Fuck right off. I say, "Is Chris here? I'm here on a recommendation" "No. He's not here." "Ok. Do you know when he'll be back?" He just stares at me, then says "he could come in... he could not come in. I work for him so... anything you want you'll have to go through me. What's your problem?(nodding to my car)" I stare back at him then said... " Oh..I'm good". Then I walked right out. His tone was so nasty! Fuck these assholes. They have waaaay tooo much macho attitude an rude tone. I LITERALLY went next door to a place called AYA Auto Repair and Smog. I hope Chris sees this review. I was looking to renew registration on one of my vehicles and was told by DMV I had to first get a lamp and brake check done from an authorized shop. I immediately googled it, went to the first shop that came up since I was very limited in time, It was a friday and I had to have it done that same day as the registration expired the next day. The first place I found said they didnt do that type of work but recommended another place which I wont mention, went there right away and although the guy at that shop seemed very nice he said he could not do the check until the next day though I went in still early around 11 AM, he also said it was very complex and would take at least 2 hrs. the cost was $125 just to check bit it could require other fees if there were additional work needed. It started to sound really fishy and It was a good thing I didnt have that kind of money cuz If I did I probably would have done it either way since I was in a hurry to get it done. Soon as I came home I jumped on Yelp and found some very good reviews about this place, called up and was told by the guy over the phone he would do it for almost have the price I was quoted and he would take care of me if I brought it in within 30-40 mins, I rushed over there and though it was a bit far out it was well worth it, i was literraly in and out in less than 25 minutes, they replaced a couple of extra bulbs I needed one on the license plate and didnt charge me anything extra although they could have, they were very reasonable and honored the price I was given over the phone. I got out of there still in time to go to DMV and take care of the registration that same day! I would highly recommend this shop and will be going back for additional work and maintanance on my car from now on. I took my car in to have a very obvious click sound addressed when I push on the drivers/brake pedal, and I needed major service and oil change. I first called them and let them know my situation and I was trusting them bc of the Yelp reviews. They said come on in we'll take care of you...I was hopeful they'd deal w me honestly. I was seriously wrong. They assessed that my engine mounts need to be replaced. Quoted me 850 out the door no tax. Three hours later I get a call that two of the five mounts were not for my make and its cost me an additional 250. 1100 out the door. I did ask why they replaced them at all before asking me. He said that they could put two of the old ones back on if I didn't want to pay the 250. WTF?!?! Shady ass shit. Gave me no option to do it later I had to eat shit and now pay 1100. I show up the next day and they charge me the 1100 and tax! Now I'm paying 1140. The best part is when they said they'd take $50 off the labor bc of what happened to the mounts. It was Not much more but after being hosed I was pissed. Then I realize they never even did the oil change. So I'll have to spend an additional $75 somewhere too. Ugh. Gets better.As I drive off- guess what THE SAME NOISE HAPPENS AS I DRIVE!! They pull some fkn dog and pony show showing me the parts replaced like I fkn know what that is. They said I could bring it back in when I returned from out of town. Since I returned I've had ppl in my car and everyone heard it. It's so obvious it infuriating. I've been advised to report them to the BBB. Make no mistake about it. They have no clue what they are doing. They take advantage of customers. This is a Nightmare. Update 6/16: I took it back in to them and I was told the clicking noise was actually a 'loose part' in my muffler that did not need repair and is 'safe' for me to drive. Not sure if that's true so getting a second opinion and I'm filing with the BBB as I write this. In essence they milked me of nearly $1100+ that I did not need to spend. Thieves. Liars. I called ahead to see if they could install the serpentine belt I had already purchased, not only did they give me the most reasonable quote, but they were able to fit me the same day. When I pulled up I was greeted and attended to immediately. And not only did they install my belt, but they put on new windshield whipers I had in the trunk of my car and had been to lazy to out on myself. The manager, Chris, often saves me money at the expense of his own profit margin by allowing me to use off-brand parts, or indicating what must be fixed and what can wait. Also, they are very good about diagnosing specifically what is wrong and fixing that (unlike other places, that seemed to take a hit or miss approach and have me spending lots of unnecessary money before the issue was fixed). They are always polite and it amazes me how they so obviously care about their customers. I can't say enough good things. So lucky to have found this place.
