8/15 Update - The owner called my wife and said that between an email she had sent them, and this review on Yelp, he wanted to make us happy. Explained that they were short handed on Saturday, and with their getting ready for the students and everything, our order fell through the cracks. The hasty addition of the order to the schedule caused the mix-ups. My wife said that the way that he phrased things, he wasn't making excuses, but just explaining what had happened, and was excepting responsibility and sounded genuinely concerned, which impresses me as too many people these days don't take responsibility. We did get a nice topper for the bed, which was an additional cost that we hadn't expected, and that helped immensely last night. But that also caused the bed to be ridiculously high. We decided to keep the mattress, and the owner has offered to replace the foundation with a low-profile version, which should be delivered within the hour. If we had gotten this sort of service at from the start, I would have given 5 stars, but as it is, I can only revise it from 1 star up to 4. Original review... With all the great reviews, we just had to try Van Winkle. Sadly, we were disappointed. The service in the showroom is great, and it is low-pressure. My wife and I liked that a lot! However... We ordered our mattress on Saturday (8/11) with a Monday (8/13) AM delivery time set up. They never showed! We called at 12:20, and we were not even on their schedule. They were very nice about it and came over in about 45 minutes...... with the wrong mattress. We had ordered the firm, and they delivered a plush. Called them back once we realized it - Firm and Plush look exactly alike, except for the tag. They came back with the right mattress about 2 hours after we called. Not bad, all things considered. The delivery person left a couple of marks on the wall, which we were not expecting because the first delivery person was so careful. I wonder if that second person was not a normal delivery person, and it was late in the day... We were all set for a good night's sleep - except that the firm that we got was MUCH FIRMER than the one in the showroom. Neither I nor my wife spent a very good night on it. I called them, and they basically said they don't guarantee comfort - try a topper. In my opinion, they need to keep their showroom samples true to what will be delivered. If only we had kept the wrong mattress, but how were we to know? ;-) read more

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not a fan of intrusive sales staff; generally, I like to be left alone to wander or figure things out on my own, but especially when mattress shopping (isn't it awkward, walking around and laying on beds for minutes at a time while someone watches over you like a hawk?). If I have questions, I will go ask. Well, that's why I liked Van Winkle so much. You walk into the store, get a two-minute intro to the store's layout and what is what, and then you're left alone to do what you please in order to figure out what mattress suits you best. Now, don't let this description make it sound like the staff is unhelpful; I did have questions, and when I asked them, I found the guy helping me to be incredibly knowledgeable on pretty much anything mattress-related. Go ahead, ask some questions at Sears or elsewhere and see if you feel the same way! I'm guessing that will be a "no". That was my experience - the whole reason I sought out Van Winkle was to replace a bad mattress I ordered from Sears, where I found the staff to be less-than-stellar. The guy at Van Winkle was very friendly and honest about anything I asked him about. I walked away from Van Winkle that day with a mattress that I'm quite satisfied with (though admittedly I've only used it once so far). They're capable of doing delivery on the same day you order, in most cases, which is great - I was able to coordinate the pickup of my old mattress and delivery of my new one for the same day, and never had to sleep on the couch! Last but certainly not least, prices are great! The guy cautioned me that they don't offer a "comfort guarantee", which helps them keep their prices down, but with his help I left with a mattress I feel confident I wouldn't want to return anyway. They're all about helping you get what you need. My one complaint about Van Winkle, though not significant enough to dock a star from the rating, is this: they leave the heavy-duty mattress plastic on all of their mattresses in the showroom. It's a little unsightly, and can make it a little hard to get an accurate feeling for the mattresses - I don't know if it's just distracting, or if the added layer interferes significantly in other ways, but in any case, I think it'd be better without them. read more

This place is totally awesome. We recently got a Sealy mattress. The price was right, the ordering process went smoothly, it arrived at his store when Ken said it would, and they delivered exactly when they said they would, which, if you've ever had to wait for deliveries on large-ticket items, well, let's just say that that four-hour window is "flexible" for them while you've had to rearrange your entire life for those four hours only to have to rearrange it again when they fail to show up. Nuff said, but VanWinke's is definitely true to their word, and I would definitely recommend this to family and friends. We shopped around for a long, long time to find a mattress, falling subject to all kinds of gimmicks and tricks of the product trade--exorbitant, inflated prices offered as "50% off prices" at some big boxes (places that rhyme with Jeers, for example [and no, it's not beers]) that were more than the price points at VanWinke's. Working with this store, I felt none of that snookering, fleecing and gaming going on in the mattress world. Even with our Consumer Reports info in mind when we shopped the other stores, we were overwhelmed and wound up stalling out on the purchasing process--until we got to VanWinkle's, which says volumes for the store. There was no one else in the store when Ken directed me to the type of product I wanted, and he left me be to test the mattress out for as long as needed--no pressure, but helpful with questions I had. If you ever need a mattress in the Ann Arbor area, Van Winkle is the place for you. We bought two mattresses on two different occasions from Van Winkle, and in both cases we were extremely satisfied, to say the least. This place is all about the service. The owner, Ken, and his children who also work at the store, are the nicest people we have met. They are professionals and they provide all the information you need. They will help you choose the mattress which is best for you, even if it means selling you a cheaper one. Unlike many businesses around, they are genuinely interested that their customers be happy and satisfied, and they will go out of their ways to make that happen. For example, when we had a problem with our Sealy mattress a year after we had bought it, all it took was a quick phone call to Van Winkle, and the very next day (a day before Christmas!) Ken paid us a house visit to check the mattress and see what the problem was. Not only that, he also took upon himself (although he absolutely had no obligation to do so) to talk to the manufacturer and try to help us with the situation we had. Needless to say that a few days later we received a phone call from Ken and the problem was solved to our utmost satisfaction. Bottom line - this is a great place, with great people, who provide great service, and sell great products. If we ever need another mattress, Van Winkle will defiantly be our first and only stop. read more

I have been here twice and had two very successful shopping trips, despite having problems show up with both my orders. The first time I was here, I had just moved to Ann Arbor and needed a mattress and boxspring. I came to Van Winkle, got great service in selecting them (at an awesome price!), and had it delivered the same day. When the delivery truck showed up, however, my apartment decided to be a problem. Apparently it is impossible to get queen boxsprings down to basement apartments in Kerrytown. However, the team at Van Winkle suggested two possible alternatives to a boxspring, went back to the warehouse, and delivered the new bedboard the same day. Not only did I not get charged for the extra delivery work, but the bedboard was cheaper than the boxspring, resulting in a discount from Van Winkle. The second time I went to Van Winkle was about two weeks ago, when I needed a new futon. I picked one out and paid for it in about 15 minutes, and told the salesman I needed it by a week later, when friends were staying over. A few days later, I got a call saying the futon I ordered would not be available in the time frame I needed it, but that Van Winkle would instead upgrade me to a model that cost about $100 more, for free. Even better, they delivered it on a Sunday. And the futon is great quality. Fabulous service, great shopping experience, quality products. Would definitely go back. read more

Amazing service, and quality! Prices are wonderful as well! Van Winkle is the perfect model of a well run, well designed family business. The owner assisted me with a quick tour of the store when I entered and invited me to make myself at home. I did not feel pressured at all to make a purchase nor did I feel rushed, there were a few other guests in the store when I was browsing but Ken and his kids made sure everyone was helped and doing okay. I comfortably was able to try out the beds I was interested in without being disturbed as I wanted to try laying there for a while texting and laying in different positions as I would in bed at home. I compared what I paid for mattress, box spring, and mattress cover online for a similar mattress and the deal at Van Winkle was the same if not better. I've had bad experiences buying furniture before but this was easy and I did not feel swindled nor regret my purchase later. Ken and who I believe was his son delivered the mattress a few hours after my purchase, they even adjusted the bed frame I already own to fit the larger king size mattress and put everything together for me. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and will recommend Van Winkle to anyone looking to purchase a mattress! It's good to know businesses like this still exist! read more

I just moved to Ann Arbor to start grad school in the fall, and Van Winkle made the process easy and delightful! First of all, as many other reviews mention, the salespeople are pleasant and never pushy -- I was given an introduction to the different mattresses in my price range (and never even encouraged to spend more than I wanted!) and then left alone to test the mattresses. I asked for and was given a quote that included my mattress set, a headboard, bed frame and delivery. In the course of the day, I was able to find a headboard, footboard, and bed frame at Treasure Mart for a fraction of the cost of a new headboard. Although I was nervous to call Van Winkle and tell them I'd be making a smaller order than originally planned, the owner actually congratulated me on my find! What other business owner would be so kind? I ordered the mattress too late in the day for same-day delivery (I actually placed my order fifteen minutes before the store closed), but the mattress was delivered right at 10:30 the next morning, as I requested. The young man who delivered the mattress was happy to place it on the bed frame and to make any adjustments as needed. I would recommend Van Winkle to anyone. Buyer beware, you maybe surprised, these fokes actually care. First to be fair, the people were nice, no high pressure bull. The only issue, we brought, the wrong bed, we picked it, they did not steer us to it. Now my wife and I choose it, a better than average Sealy Parasol Plush Euro Top. For us this is one crappy bed. Bed movement keep waking each other up along with back aches. When Van winkle heard about this, they call us and said let us fix the problem. We picked out the wrong bed and they want to help us out, unbelievable! The first line on there bill of sale, "All sales are final. Van Wikle Mattress Co. does not offer a mattress comfort guarantee. My wife and I stopping by today to see how we can correct a bad choise on our part. They may sell good, comfortable beds. Hopefully in a few days, We own one. We stoped back explained what was wrong with the first bed, tried several different ones,and setteled on one. They gave us full credit for it and since we paid to have the first one delivered, they delivered the second one for no additional charge. The important point here is we are sleeping well again, no bed jiggle or sore backs. They truly want all there customers to be satisfied. read more

Today was my first visit to Van Winkle, and I'm already recommending them to family and friends. The store isn't fancy, but things are clean and laid out well. The prices seem to be lower than most others, but admittedly this is based on internet searching and one quick visit to Mattress and Futon store as my only comparison. The best part is the staff. There was absolutely no pressure, no "hovering" while I looked around, and no attempts to push a more expensive product, even after I mentioned that I was back and forth between two beds. He pointed out the differences in the models, answered all of my questions, and then left me alone to make a decision. I arrived late in the afternoon, but they have scheduled delivery for tomorrow and were willing to work around my schedule. Overall, they made shopping a very nice experience, and as a bonus I always feel great supporting a local small business. read more

Sleeping on my old mattress had become uncomfortable, but when I began researching new mattresses online I felt like I needed to lie down. I felt both over and under-whelmed by the options offered by "big box" retailers. Fortunately, I happened upon the glowing reviews for Van Winkle, a locally-owned family business. I stopped by the store yesterday morning, and the owner himself gave me a ten-minute tour of the showroom, encouraging me to try lying on the less expensive mattresses before moving on to the more expensive ones. This turned out to be an excellent strategy. I chose the mattress that felt best and it was delivered that evening. I slept better last night than I have in years, thanks both to my new mattress and the stress-free process of identifying and purchasing it. I decided I wanted a new mattress set on January 25th. I'm impulsive that way. I called Van Winkle and spoke to Ken, the owner. He told me 'Come in any time before 6. If you find a mattress you like I'll see that it's delivered today'. I came in with my wife that afternoon. We picked out a mattress set and completed the paperwork at 2:23 pm (I checked my receipt). The new set was in my bedroom and my old set was gone by 5. I should mention I live in Chelsea! Service is a valuable commodity to me. The buying experience was a delight. Low key, knowledgeable Ken answered our questions then said 'I'll be up front if you need me' and left us alone to try every mattress in the house. We finally found one that suited us both. It's been two weeks and we both love it. This is a nice little family owned business. I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. read more

We had an excellent experience working with the staff at Van Winkle - the owner's daughter has amazing customer service skills; is extremely knowledgeable about their inventory; and doesn't engage in any pressuring tactics, answering customers' questions, then leaving while they test out the mattresses. The owner delivered our mattresses the next day within the 2-hour delivery time frame (carrying them by himself!) and was extremely professional and helpful. Someone greeted me at the door, showed me what was available for the size mattress I was shopping for, then let me decide what I wanted on my own instead of being pushy about the more expensive options. After I decided on one that I liked, I mentioned I had recently moved and had been sleeping in a chair so I was glad to be getting a mattress! I wanted it delivered as soon as possible and ended up with the mattress at my house less than two hours later! I would definitely recommend this place. Loved that I shopped and supported a local business but also feel like I got the best price around. After leaving the store, I didn't feel ripped off like I do so often with furniture stores. Got a great price for a bunk bed and felt like Ken really understood where I was coming from and worked with me on getting the best bunk bed for my daughter for the best price. My daughter was without a mattress due to a roommate mixup, we live in California and she was distressed about not having a bed. I called, and due to the time zones, it was after hours in Michigan. Yet, Ken forwarded his calls to his cell and answered my call. My daughter received a wonderful mattress within hours and was able to get a good nights sleep. This place is supper helpful. I went there to pick up a mattress and since they did not have the one I ordered in the store they said they would deliver it for free that same day. When the still did not have the mattress in the storage facility they gave me the next best mattress for the same price I paid for the cheaper mattress.
