I have used Van Der Bosch on four occasions, and they have exceeded my expectations every time. I do household plumbing projects myself, but I know my limitations. The first project I used Van Der Bosch to install tankless water heater. I had done some research and knew how much the parts cost, and what I wanted. I found it difficult finding anyone who installed them at the time (2004). I got a quote from Roto Router for a tank replacement for 1,500.00. That guy told me that you needed to have a special license to buy the unit (complete BS BTY). I found Van Der Bosch and they quoted me 2,000.00 installed. I knew the parts alone went for 1,000.00, so 1,000.00 for labor seemed a little pricey, but not unreasonable. They didn't set off any BS alarms either, so I went with them. The job was substantial. New gas lines and fresh copper lines needed to be run because tankless heaters are direct vent only. They had a bit of an issue drilling the hole for the exhaust because my house has 5 layers of brick (it was over built 100+ years ago). As I watched them work, I was expecting a bigger and bigger bill than my quote. The work was performed expertly and cleanly. When I got the bill, it was exactly 2,000.00. About 2 years later, I was having issues with the heater and called them back. They came on time and spent about an hour diagnosing the issue and ordering the parts from the manufacturer (and had them shipped straight to my house). It turned out to be a bad mother board. The day after the new mother board arrived, they came out and installed it and gave me a bill for 0.00. I decided after that to use them exclusively. I have also had them install a gate drain and sump pump in my finished basement. They took extra time to save as many tiles as they possibly could, and to cut clean lines to make my retile job easier. My latest experience has cemented them as the only plumber I will ever call. The chimney for my boiler got clogged somehow and almost burned down the house (smoke and CO2 detectors save lives!). The fire also fried my boiler. Hue came out on a Saturday and gave me his recommendation and quote. Monday morning at 7:00 AM they were there installing the new unit. Again the quoted price was the price I paid. A week later on a Saturday night the new boiler wouldn't fire. Hue came out Sunday morning and fixed the problem at no charge. Any plumber that stands behind their work enough to come out on a Sunday morning is at the top of the list of people I want doing work in my house! They are always clean, professional, and timely and trustworthy in every sense of the word. I cannot recommend them enough. read more

We have worked with Van Der Bosch for three or four years now, and they have been beyond fantastic. We lived in a garden (basement) unit condo that had some severe plumbing issues. Now, all garden units have water issues - that's just the nature of the beast of living underground. But our unit had some particularly bad problems: The common piping for the toilets was old and not installed to handle a below-grade unit, so several times during huge rainstorms, sewage from the other people in our condo backed up through our tub. We had VDB come out multiple times for this issue. The reason why it took "multiple times" had nothing to do with shoddy craftsmanship on the part of VDB. Since the problem was in the common pipes, it was an issue for the condo association. The association understandably chose to do some lower cost fixes the first couple times around, but eventually opted for the full pipe replacement when they realized that this was going to continue being an issue. Throughout the process, VDB advocated for us to the condo board, and I think it was their advocacy that eventually led to the association eventually chosing the big-ticket long-term fix. Now that might make you think they push the more expensive stuff for their own benefit. But that's not the case at all - more than once, they urged us NOT to have some expensive work done that they didn't think would actually lead to a long-term benefit for us. (Not to mention they made several visits for free when dealing with minor things.) This honesty was one of the biggest things that we appreciated about them, and we really felt that we could trust them 100%. That eventual big fix was that they had to rip up our floor to get to and replace a big pipe. This was a multi-day job that left us unable to use that particular room in our house. Not only did they get this done in what seemed to us like a pretty short amount of time, but they left the floor looking like nothing had ever happened to it. After they did this, we never had the sewage problem ever again. Also, the plumbers that came to our unit were the nicest guys in the world. I don't know if it's company policy that the service workers be so polite, but I think every time someone came over, they called us "ma'am" and "sir." Anyways, these guys are great. I give them my absolutely highest recommendation, and am really sad that we can't take them with us to West Virginia when we move. read more

Wow, are there two Van Der Bosch plumbers? I can't imagine the bad reviews...these guys are great! Of course, both negative reviews just had estimates, and didn't have any work done. We did, and I can tell you that I highly recommend them. We originally called them out to give us an estimate on a tankless hot water heater. Hugh was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. He seemed to understand all the intricacies of how tankless heaters work, and what the pitfalls were. While we were discussing hot water heaters, my husband offhandedly mentioned that we were having severe and ongoing problems with a relatively new (5 year old) heating system in our home. We had had literally a dozen "experts" come out to look at the system, and each time it would work for a while and then quit, usually the coldest day of the year. Hugh took one look at it and found some obvious problems that no one had ever mentioned, bottom line it was simply the wrong system for our sized home. Very long story short, we ended up buying a brand new gas condensing boiler and hot water system from Van Der Bosch. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny! Our gas bills have plummeted, our house is cleaner (other system left fine dust), and the system is steady and reliable, not to mention more environmentally friendly. If I had back all the money I spent installing the first (bad) heating sytem, and paying the procession of heating guys who tried to make it work later, I could easily have paid off the new system and had money left over. No, these guys aren't cheap, but you'll save money and aggravation having it done right in the first place. I only wish I'd known about them 6 years ago, when I spent 5K on a boiler system that's now in the garbage. read more

Racine, Chicago - (773) 523-1967 and the following web site: www.vanderbosch.com We took 12 inches of sewer back up into our basement after the rain storms of 9/13/2008. Hugh from Van Der Bosch came out and proposed a completely different type of flood control valve than any of our other quotes. It was not a flipper valve but a JR Smith Flood Gate back water valve, guaranteed not to get hung up like some flipper valves do. Also this solution does not require a pump and ejector pit like some of the other quotes said we needed. Hugh and his team were extremely professional, they scheduled the work quickly and got a lot of work done in about 4 days total. They also did some additional interior work continuing a cast iron waste stack into the ground where the previous owner of our house had tied cast iron into PVC. Hugh has a keen eye for spotting shotty work and I believe he is a perfectionist when it comes to do things the right way. The price from Van Der Bosch was more than our other quotes but the work was solid and professional and I have no doubt that we got our moneys worth with the work the performed for us. read more

5 years ago I have taken on the post of handling maintenance for our association. I first started using VDB 4 years ago after we had to get a new water heater after a spring flood in our basement. After dealing with several companies I eventually got to meet Hugh Hodur, the owner of VanDerBosch, who defused the entire situation with a no-nonsense approach and a speedy, budget fitting solution to our problem, something his competitors were not able to provide in that measure. I have since used VDB for all our association plumbing issues which include 50 year old boilers and an infrastructure that comes with 2 buildings aged over 100 years. I prefer value to cheap and VanDerBosch's prices are very much in line with the value provided. Hugh and his company score extremely high on my satisfaction scale based on my experiences over the last 4 years. VanDerBosch has been our contractor of choice for the heating and plumbing needs for our 30 unit, 80+ yr. old condominium building for several reasons: 1) They are professional. Hugh and all their employees are polite, friendly, respectful. Never had a bad interaction with them ever. 2) They are knowledgeable. They have and are currently guiding us through several major transitions to our heating and plumbing systems. We have had VanDerBosch on 2 occasions router out our main sewer line from the back of the house to the street, we have a giant elm on the street and this is preventative work. The work was done professionally on both occasions. This fall we also had the company track the plumbing under our basement floor for future work, they did this with electronic equipment, both a scope in the plumbing and a tracker on the floor surface. This was a piece of mind issue as we now know where plumbing is for an emergency. All of the work was done in a timely manner and came in as the estimate stated. Hugh came over to inspect the recurrence, after many years, of a leak from an upstairs bathroom. He was friendly, professional, patient and very knowledgeable. After a good examination of the problem he satisfactorily figured out the cause and recommended the only solution. He also recommended a short-term fix which I could implement.
