I've been a patron of Vazquez for about 36 years. My only criticism is they moved from their old location closer to downtown. That's it. Unlike the Karen's the will criticize everything that is different compared to somewhere else. Do want "authentic Mexican cuisine?" Go to Mexico where EVERYTHING is "authentic." I do like the fact you can order a Taco Bowl and have the option for a full or half size- it also gives you a good selection of protein to choose from. I grew up here and fell in love with the pork burrito. When I graduated from college, I moved to Southern California. Nowadays I only visit every few years. I was there this weekend and ordered the same thing as usual. The flour tortillas are still thick and delicious and the pork is piping hot and super flavorful. I've been in there several times when people come in and say we used to live here but moved out of state and every time we come back for a visit this is the first place we go. Mixed feelings on this one. I visited recently for the first time in decades, and don't recall my prior experience in detail, but this visit was pretty tasty. As well as a little odd. I was craving a carnitas super burrito and hoped to find one here. I ran up to the counter (so hungry) and asked for one. They patiently explained that they didn't use that terminology but that I could build a burrito with whatever I wanted. So I asked for a carnitas burrito. They explained that it came with meat, beans and salsa, which seemed a little odd. so I added rice, more salsa, sour cream and guac. Then they pointed to a sign that was posted on the register that explained that avocados were so expensive that they don't offer guac. Ok, I've heard this before though I thought that this was resolved. Anyway, I got the burrito sans guac and added on an horchata. Good news, the horchata was really excellent! Bad news, the burrito was ready in 2-3 min and when I opened it up I was a bit shocked. It was rolled in foil as you might expect, but it had an incredibly weird feel, which I soon realized was due to the way they filled and rolled it. The roll was super loose and the fillings were 90% liquid (I had assumed whole beans but got refried). So as I opened it from the top to eat it all of the fillings drained to the bottom of the burrito. The loose roll (both the tortilla and the foil) allowed everything to start coming out the bottom. I "cinched" the bottom of the burrito enough to keep it from pouring out onto the plate and then started eating madly to try and avoid a huge mess. That's when I discovered that the tortilla (flour) was very tasty, fresh and seemingly freshly made. It was also super thick, sort of like the fresh tortillas you might get at Chevy's, just burrito size. It was a little weird but it tasted great. All of the fillings tasted good, so they get big points for that. However the experience was stressful and a bit unpleasant to eat due to the unusual roll approach. Wasn't sure if I was an outlier or what, but I see some other reviews refer to this sort of issue. I am really tempted to revisit this place and try other things on the menu, people in Vacaville rave about this place and I am hoping to discover all of the great things. Burrito may not be the right thing I'm thinking. read more

I came in and ordered the breakfast burrito. I sat down and one minute later they called me up to the counter and I was surprised how fast it was ready. I took a couple bits and noticed it was cold in the middle. Cheese was not melted and the thick tortilla was cold and not flexible. I am only giving 2 stars because the hot sauce was the only good thing about this burrito. I was surprised with all the good reviews! I went back to the counter and let them know. They apologized and said they would make me a new one. So as I was waiting I could see them putting food in a microwave. So my food is ready in 4 mins verses 1 min and when I hit an over cooked piece of bacon I was done. Burritos need to be made fresh for 8 bucks. Customers won't mind the waiting if it is cooked fresh on a flat top. read more

My husband and I stopped in for lunch today. He had soft street tacos and a pork tamale with rice and beans. His tacos were good, but his tamale was outstanding. The rice was ok but the beans were excellent. I had crispy tacos (carnitas) and chips and salsa. My taco shells were so stale that I couldn't eat them. So, I emptied my shells and ate my tacos, sans shells and they were pretty good. Also, the lettuce was treated with a preservative-yuck. Chips were good- nice and fresh and crispy. Salsa was kinda bland, but the flavor was good. However, the salsa was beginning to turn bad, because it had that slight "zing" brought on by fermentation. Staff were super friendly and efficient. Our food arrived exactly as ordered and surprisingly quickly. Restaurant and restrooms were both very sparkling clean. read more

I guess they are trying to make up for what they llost during the covid .We got a catered dinner for 9 people and didn't get any salsa or chips!!!!! The only thing that makes this place special is the tortillas. I live in San Diego, I know my Mexican food, and I am just not wowed. The tortillas are super thick and a meal in themselves, and when I eat here I always regret not just eating it by itself than getting it filled with mediocre ingredients. My boyfriend is a Vacaville native, and him and all of his friends swear by this place. I actually think I am going to get a bunch of crap for this review, but I don't care. Unless you grew up here and it holds nostalgia value for you, its really not that impressive I have a pet peeve with Mexican places that don't offer at least 2 vegetarian options, and Vasquez fails in this department. Throw me a bone and offer a veggie burrito filled with goodies. Or would it kill you to offer a potato taco? Its not bad, its just nothing super exciting. And super limited for someone like me with diet restrictions. read more

So I decided to try this place today and it was good. I had a chix taco and a fajita steak burrito and some of their nachos. The chix taco was good added some of their hot sauce(not to spicy) to it. To my the chix was seasoned well and juicy. The burrito was steak strips with peppers and onions and beans. The homemade tortilla got a little bit soggy from the meat and it all needed a tad more salt(they do offer salt and pepper packets by the soda fountain) the nachos come with a thick light colored nacho cheese and jalapeno peppers they were good but again needed some salt on the chips. I enjoyed all of it.. Just a little more seasoning and we would be good!! read more

My first time there was today Just ate a chile verde burrito with salsa. It was only $4.99 and was so tasty. The tortilla was so thick and yummy. The salsa was hot, but good. Loved it. Gotta go back for more. Update: I never posted this back when I wrote it in April. I eat here weekly and always get the same burrito. I have tried other things, the tamales are good, breakfast burrito and bean burritos are great. I am stuck on the pork burrito. The salsa is hot, but it hurts so good. I have eaten here off and on since they first opened their doors. They are a long ways away from where they started. The tacos taste of old grease and soggy chicken, and their burritos are bland and tired. You would think they would improve as time goes by instead of sticking with out dated and tired recipes. SO DELICIOUS!!! My husband and I were both born and raised in southern CA and are always looking for a good taco shop like we have down south. Boy oh boy did this place exceed our expectations!! It was absolutely terrible the burrito had a horrible smell like it was old I could smell it as soon as I opened the bag . I would describe the smell as old sauce or meat ... it delivered within 5 minutes so I know they barely attempted to cook it correctly . I've read other reviews and other people have said it smelled old . It's ridiculous why sell old food or food not properly cooked to customers ? ! The meat had absolutely no flavor at all I didn't even know it was steak in there ... it was cold .
