I've been curious about Vecino since I heard about them, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to try their food while I was in the area. It was such a great experience, from the giant wood front door, to the Palo Santo burning at the hostess table, the wonderful service by the entire team, and of course, the amazing flavors of every dish we had. They thought about every aspect of the dining experience, and I appreciate that so much. Although the menu isn't labeled, our server recommended many options that were gluten free, including their special dessert. Coming to this place is not just about eating--it's about living the experience. My wife and I traveled from Ohio to try this spot based on friends' recommendations. We had a date night planned, and we couldn't have chosen better. The comments we had heard didn't do it justice. Even though the menu is on the smaller side, the culinary offering feels complete, with flavors that are fresh and homemade. I highly recommend making a reservation 24 hours in advance. We didn't, and decided to take the risk of waiting for a table. The host was very kind and accommodating. While we waited on the back patio (which is meant just for drinks), someone came out to check on us. She must have sensed that we had traveled a long way, because she was so kind--she offered us guacamole to take the edge off our hunger, and we ordered two mezcal cocktails. The mango with chile one absolutely blew my mind--delicious! We were also served their salsa flight, which was perfectly balanced. But above all, the service is what stands out the most. They make you feel like a regular guest--almost as if you were part of their everyday circle. At the end, we found out that the woman who came to check on us was actually one of the owners, Adriana. Spectacular in every way. It's a Mexican restaurant but not the usual popular variety. Not a place for cheese-stuffed enchiladas and burritos. It's a place with delicious flavors and herbs. Great restaurant in Midtown. Easy parking without all the hassle of parking downtown. Clean, comfortable ambiance with outdoor patio available, we sat in nice dining room inside. All the staff were awesome and friendly, our waiter Mikhail was especially great!! The food was unique and thankfully Mikhail took the time to explain everything to us. We had a lot of stuff as there were 4 of us and we shared all courses we got, but we enjoyed everything we had!! My personal favorite was the duck enchiladas. Service was good, efficient; they didn't have the wine my husband wanted but tastings were offered so he could make a decision. I'm always a sucker for whole fish and 24 oz red snapper, grilled with 2 sauces, MP$68 - our party of 4 actually decided to order 2 fishes since it was so Unique and I'm glad we did cause there was gonna be no sharing of that! Fish came with house made tortillas and small salad, so we could make tacos - the tortillas were hot, fresh and hearty - so I think we could each only eat 2 of them before just eating the fish itself. Four of us went for dinner. We had cocktails, appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and wine. Here's how we rated: Salsa trio OK, chips very good, guacamole excellent, green salad excellent, cauliflower good, duck enchiladas excellent, tuna tostada not good and very small, hamachi crudo not good and also very small, tres leches excellent, chocolate mousse OK, pescado red snapper OK, Mexican wine good, cocktails OK. Biggest issue for us was pricing for the portion sizing. We ordered the large red snapper at about 1 1/2 lbs - it was $102. The crudo was $26, the salad $23, cauliflower $23. Mexican white wine - $19. Given the portion size, they are overpriced by 20-25% in our opinion. Seemed like they had a lot of staff for their size. Decor was OK, many have commented on dark bathrooms. Noise level is moderately high when filled up, but we could still talk. Given all the rave reviews here, our expectations were higher for this restaurant and we were somewhat disappointed. read more

The vibe is great, decor is beautiful and fresh and the food is tasty but I wasn't blown away. I'm a native Texan so I have high expectations for Latin cuisine. On that note though, the margaritas are excellent! The half chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy -- honestly what pushed this review from 4 stars to 5. I could eat that chicken every day of my life. But the refried beans underwhelmed me, they were mostly just salty and were missing that deep garlic and pork flavor. The duck enchiladas were another highlight of our meal, I would come back for those for sure. The guacamole was good but I've had better and made better at home. It's a good portion size though and at $17 per serving, it should be. Overall, the prices are fine. A little high for Detroit but not as outrageous as other reviews led me to believe. Finally, the service was impeccable! Everyone on the staff was very kind. They noted our table's allergens and were very careful not to contaminate plates. Amazing experience!!! We came here for a special occasion and I was worried that it wouldn't hold up to the hype. There is nothing more disappointing than having high hopes and great anticipation for a restaurant and being let down. Well this was not the case. I made reservations for bar seating at 6. We got there a little early and we're able to be seated. I definitely recommend reservations because this place got filled up very quickly! The outside of the building is beautiful. The inside is very minimalist but also well done and beautiful. We had amazing service! Alexa was a total delight! She took great care of us and despite being very busy, we felt like the most important customers there! The menu was a little intimidating for me. It is sort of hard to understand what you're ordering. She took plenty of time explaining it to us and giving us recommendations. We started with Sikik Pak. This is a pumpkin and Chile hummus type serves with three types of salsa and tortilla chips. These were packed with flavor. They may even start selling it. For dinner, we opted for Wagyu beef (I couldn't tell you what it is called on the menu). I believe it is Asada del dia... but don't quote me. It's served with warm flour tortillas. This is a shared meal, meant for two. It was quite expensive but worth the price. We finished most of it but still took some home. Alexa was able to recommend several drinks and they were all fantastic! We ordered churros with ice cream for dessert and they served it with a candle. A great night all around!! Quickly, this is one of Detroit's very best restaurants. Loved our dinner here, from the service to the dishes to the ambiance. The menu is a bit intimidating, but our server Marisol was terrific at explaining everything. To our surprise, the dishes are intended to be served family style, so our table of four ordered a bunch of entrees. As a starter, we ordered the guacamole and salsas. Great flavor in each for them. The guacamole was easily the best I've ever had. The tuna tostada was a revelation. I'd go back just for that. The tlayuda (sirloin, beans, chorizo, quesillo on a toasted tortilla) was delicious along with the duck confit enchiladas. The quesadilla was very good, stuffed with the creamiest cheese I've ever eaten, but could have used a protein. The classic margarita was easily among the best I've ever had. Update: previous review still applies. However, I'm happy to report that the pacing issue seems resolved and the agua de Jamaica was far less sweet at my last visit. Always great to see a new business hitting its stride. I will say that the mole verde and broccolini I had at my most recent visit was a totally different experience than the one I had the first time even though they were described quite similarly on the menu. I asked our server and she was unaware of a change to the sauce recipe. So I guess try to be open to variations of preparation? Hopefully as they confirm some permanent dishes for the rotation they'll find some consistency. read more

Vecino was very good. One issue - charging for ice in a restaurant where our bill with tax and tip for 2 was $240. My wife ordered 2 tequilas, which were about $20 each, and asked for a large ice cube in the glass. We were surprised to see a $4 charge for ice on the bill. It's not all that it makes up to be. The duck enchiladas were good but it's not amazing as people make it out to be. Steak was too charred. They charged us for flour tortillas instead of corn, which was fine. My husband got a tequila shot, waitress asked if he wanted it on ice to sip on it and he said sure. We get our receipt and they charged us $3 for the ice, which we laughed about because it's quite literally water. So head up this is the kinda place that charges you for every little thing. We had been meaning to try Vecino for months, and finally were able to accomplish it this weekend. Parking in Midtown is not always easy, but we were lucky enough to get a spot right out front on the street, the intentional heavy velvet curtain to black out the cold air from the restaurant greeted us at the host stand. We were greeted kindly and seated promptly by whom we thought was a very kind hostess, but ended up being the owner! The vibe...a 10!!! Perfect lighting, intentional decor, and the smell of santel! Our server was amazing! Violet took care attention to every detail on the menu and answered all of our questions and even was able to explain with care and ease any dishes my gluten-free boyfriend should stay away from. We enjoyed the chips and the trio of salsa. The one salsa made with peanut butter was unbelievable! Violet was so sweet to give us a small ramekin to go because she saw how much we enjoyed it. I learned that they will be bottling and selling that stuff and I will be the first to buy two bottles!!!! I started with the Picosa Verde, a perfectly crafted spin on a spicy margarita! Delish!!!! We enjoyed the octopus appetizer which I would probably rate a 20 on a one to 10 scale. Portion size was huge, taste and presentation was perfection! Had the pleasure of visiting Vecino last night after dinner nearby. I have reservations for later this week but wanted to do a scouting mission and I'm so glad I did because I can't wait to do full on dinner there. The space is beautifully decorated, it feels sultry and intimate but also casual and fun. The music was fantastic, mostly cumbia, I even heard a cumbia cover of Hotline Bling, I didn't think anyone else realized but I appreciated it greatly. Even though it was crowded it was not as loud as most new restaurants in Detroit so I assume some care was taken in sound dampening, I could easily hear the music, the staff, and my fellow diners which I think is crucial. My drinks were fantastic, I got the July to Me and the Xochimilco. And then got the July to Me as my dessert because they were out of desserts. They used Citadele as their house gin which is my favorite and typically use fee foam but were out so they used egg white, which is my preference anyway, but for vegans or those allergic to eggs, this is a great option. What I noticed about the drinks is they had all the tastes represented (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami) which results in a very balanced cocktail (and one with more ingredients and effort than I would want to do at home). They were truly fantastic. I will try one of their more tequila or mezcal based drinks next time but July to Me is probably my favorite cocktail at the moment. They also have Spanish wines which I might drive into next time too. For a snack I got the Tuna Tostada. Now, that dish was a work of art. Beautiful strips of tuna (not the maserated bits you often find in tuna appetizers), the fried onions and other toppings were delicious, but I think my favorite parts were the actual tostada and the sauce that was the base. Vecino's specialty is their masa and you can really tell, there's a huge difference between what I was served last night vs whatever masa-based foods you may have had in your life before. Even as a native Texan who frequently went to Mexico, I didn't think I've ever had a tostada that good. A few things: I think they only have one bathroom for the whole restaurant, maybe that's soon to be remedied but go before you go and go before you need to cause the line was 5 or 6 deep when I was leaving so decided to just hold it until I got home. The stools are ok but I hope they are able to upgrade soon because they are hard to slide in and out and feel precarious with their spindley legs. Lastly, they didn't have the prices posted on the menu online and I think this could be a deterrent for many but this is common for fine dining. That is part of the reason I did a test run, just to make sure the prices and quality were matched before committing to full on dinner with a friend in tow and I would say they are. It's about what Grey Ghost is in price of that gives you an idea and I would say the quality, inventiveness, and vibe all make that very reasonable. Salud! read more

We got to try Vecino fairly soon after they opened, which can be a bit of a gamble; it's so new, it may not be running like a well-oiled machine yet, but this one paid off. We really enjoyed our dinner here. Our server was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. We started out with the Paloma and the Xochimilco drinks. I got mine minus the foam, and it was fantastic, truly right up my alley. We ordered a variety of dishes, from the quesadillas which were good, but I would have ordered it with the additional mushrooms next time, but the spicy red sauce it came with we put on everything we had after! The tlayuda with sirloin was very tasty, if a bit hard to cut into; tearing into it with your fingers was much more effective, but not at all fine dining manners. But it was so good, you just want to eat it, any way you can. We ordered the grilled half chicken, which was quite succulent! We made little tacos out of with the tortillas they make in house, and the salsas and guacamole we ordered. They were quite good. The dessert was also excellent, we had a Maria cookie ice cream that was great, and a corn cake with mezcal ice cream and cajeta which I loved. The only thing I didn't like was the hard sort of unpopped corn kernel things they had as garnish on both desserts. They didn't add much flavor to the dish, and shattered in your mouth like glass, in the most unpleasant way possible. So we just ate around them. They definitely have the right idea with the ambient music they play, which sets the mood for the restaurant perfectly. No BS awful club remixes here, but actual Latin music to enhance the dining experience. Finally a restaurant in Detroit that gets it! We were surprised to be able to grab a next day reservation at Vecino for a Friday night. So glad we did as Vecino exceeded my expectations! We entered through their beautiful front door to an airy room with a great mix of industrial and natural elements reminiscent of some of the restaurants I visited on my travels to Mexico. I loved the open kitchen and bar full of mezcal and tequila. We were quickly seated and our servers were on it with making sure our water cups were filled and our orders were taken promptly. I ordered their Negroni Blanco which featured Mezcal. It was a perfect blend of bitter, sweet and smokey. My husband enjoyed two margaritas that included an avocado truffle tequila. It was surprisingly delicious!Let's get to the food...The menu is organized by Aguachiles, Masa, Hearth Fired Dishes, sides, and Desserts. We tried a little from each section (minus dessert). The Rojo Fluke Aguachile was one of the prettiest plates I've had in awhile. Super bright and a fun start to the meal. I could have used a pinch more salt...but that's just me. For the Masa - we did both the Pork Belly Sope and Duck Enchiladas. Both were great and you could tell the tortillas/Sope were made with quality ingredients and care. My favorite was the duck enchilada. Would've loved a little more duck inside but I could eat the green salsa from that dish on anything. The soft shell crab was on special and I couldn't say no. I appreciate them splitting it in half so you can easily share. The crab was crispy, succulent and sauce it came with was made for good dipping or putting in their house made tortillas. We went on to enjoy the Snapper which had two different sauces brushed on and charred. This was definitely a winner! It is served with warm house made tortillas in case you want to make fish tacos...not necessary but fun! We paired this with sides of the guacamole and the 3 salsas. Like others, I did find $16 for guacamole to be a bit pricy but it was a great addition to our fish taco situation along with the 3 salsas. The Salsa macha was the BEST. They should bottle and sell it. The chips they serve are called Totopos and the best way I can describe them are like a cross between a toritilla and a Frito. It may not be what some are used to but I loved them! We were too full to enjoy dessert so will have to return. I've been here with my wife probably 5-ish times at this point. I'm ready to firmly entrench this spot in the Selden, oak and reel, Freya, etc crowd of Detroit restaurants. The service and food are both top tier and worth it. The vibe is fine dining but super approachable and more laid back which makes it's a an easy-going fun time. I see lots of people complaining about the price. If you don't understand why these prices are actually reasonable for what you get - then that's on you. But if you look forward to a night at a place like Selden or Oak and Reel then you will 1000% love this place and not bat an eye at the price. read more

We had a great time trying new flavors here! We started with the 3 salsas and chips. The red and green salsas were pretty standard, but the peanut one was unique and delicious. All 3 are quite spicy. Then we had the veggies in mole appetizer. The squash has a really interesting texture, and the mole was nice and smoky. Then we finished with tlayuda and enchiladas. The tlayuda is like a tortilla pizza, and I loved the fresh greens on top. The enchiladas are very popular and rightly so. The sauce is SO good. Chips and tortillas featured their specialty, the masa. Definitely worth trying, even if you're not a big fan of corn (both my husband and I are not). My husband also got the vaquero drink and said it's the strongest drink he's had in a long time. Our server Alexey was super helpful, and we appreciated him being upfront about prices and portion sizes. We always love trying new places Downtown and I had been reading about this place and the unique process they used to make the tortillas and thought it was worth a try and we were so happy we did. I don't remember the whole deal about the different types of tortillas and what they were for but trust me when I say everything was really fresh and very good. With their being so much to choose from we decided to split some things so we could try different things. We started with some small plates with guacamole being the first and wow! The guacamole was one of the best I've had and I've tried a lot of them. You can tell by the pictures how fresh the avocados were. For the main course we got the branzino that was cooked 2 different ways. Although I liked one way better it was so cool how they did it 2 separate ways. Also had the sangria which was amazing! Very nice look and feel and would love to go back when they open the wall to the outside (at least that's what it looked like).
